In the words of Les Brown, one of the speakers at the National Achievers Congress in Singapore, “In order to make dreams reality, you need to have an achievement mindset: ‘Number one, look at average people and don’t do what they do. And number two, look at people who are independently wealthy and do everything they do.’” His speech resonated throughout the three-day Congress, a multi-speaker event that featured a panel of International speakers around the world and industry-leading local personalities. Les shared his insights with delegates on what the speakers did to be successful, the lessons they learned, and as Les Brown said, so we can model and apply their strategies to one’s life and business.

“You’re different. You’re here because there is something that’s in you that says I can do more. There’s something that’s in you that you want to express,” Les Brown declared to over 2,000 delegates at the end of the second day of the Congress. As one of the world’s most renowned speakers, his tenacity, belief in his ability, and choice to take action created opportunities for him to rise from the position of sanitation

worker to broadcast station manager, political commentator and multi-term state representative in Ohio. He has spoken to audiences as large as 80,000 from Denmark to Dubai, Canada to the Caribbean, earning accolades such as the National Speakers Association prestigious Golden Gavel Award for achievement and leadership in communication and one of Toastmasters International’s Top Five Outstanding Speakers Worldwide, and now appearing “live” on stage at the Singapore Expo.

Les Brown knows the path to achieving your dream is never clearly marked out and the road is never smooth. He shared his life experiences of being abandoned at birth and adopted by a domestic worker, about school and how he was labelled “educable, mentally retarded.” He spoke about how he pursued his dreams of becoming a radio disk jockey, of being able to take care of his adoptive mother and having achieved all that and more; in his words, “not to impress you, but to impress upon you the importance of having an achievement mindset.” And Les Brown did impress upon the audience that there were dreams and abilities and talents that everyone has in them. That if one is not willing to settle, not willing to allow oneself not to pursue it and put some effort towards making that dream become real. He added, “If information can make your dreams a reality, everybody would be skinny rich and happy.”

His advice to the audience? “If you’re serious about success; you need to start taking action today. If you’re waiting for things to be perfect, you’ll wait forever and nothing will ever get done.

“The way to achieve is to do what you can, where you are, with what you have. It’s easy to think up excuses for not taking action. ‘If only I had more hours in the day. If only I had a better job. If only I could meet the right person.’ But excuses won’t bring you anything of value. You’ve got to change your ‘if only’ into an ‘I will.’ ‘I will make better use of my time. I will work on improving my career. I will create and nurture my relationships.’ “If you need help, get help. If you need advice, find the people who will guide you to your dreams.”
