Dear guest, Welcome to Kyiv, a city that is more than 15 centuries old, yet remains remarkably young in every facet of its life. The first words you are likely to hear about the capital of Ukraine will probably sound familiar – there is hardly a city in the world that does not boast of its age-old traditions, its treasures of cultural heritage and its tales of glory – but Kyiv does have a lot of impressive sights and will leave you with lasting memories. Kyiv is certainly rich in unique architecture, historic locations and monuments, and masterpieces of art on display at its numerous museums, art galleries and exhibitions. The religious side of the Ukrainian capital is distinctively shaped by renowned historic sights and monuments, such as Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra, St. Sophia’s, St. Volodymyr’s and St. Michael’s Cathedrals and dozens of other landmarks that glorify the Lord and celebrate the creative powers of those who designed and built them. During sightseeing, you will fall in love with Andriyivskyi Descent, old streets of Podil district, lushly green slopes of the Dnipro river, exquisite city parks, old downtown districts that are sometimes called “The Montmartre of Kyiv”, and a multitude of other popular tourist places. There is another side of Kyiv that we would like to show you and that will help you see the city in its full splendor – the modernity of the capital city in the nation looking forward to the future. Kyiv has changed and developed greatly in recent years, today reaching the highest level of social, economic and cultural development among the cities of Ukraine. Besides being the national administrative and political, industrial and business, research and cultural centre, Kyiv is now also one of the most attractive and thriving focal points of international business and cooperation and an important connection hub right in the centre of Eastern Europe that links East and West. Kyiv is actively modernizing and expanding to keep up the thriving phase of its development. Both more than four million citizens of Kyiv and visitors benefit from new architectural solutions, more developed transportation system, recreational and tourism infrastructure, improved air and rail connections, better access to culture, science and education. The municipal government does its best to capitalise on new possibilities by carefully adding the new dimension, the 21st century look, to the age-old roots of the “cradle of Slavic civilization”. Simultaneously, we continue to take care of cultural heritage of the city, constantly enriching and restoring it. In just under three months Kyiv will be one of the cities hosting UEFA’s EURO 2012 Football Championship. We are really excited about the chance to host the culminating matches of the Championship and to show how hospitable and warm our city can be to anyone with an open heart, who is willing to know it better.

Kyiv Cossack Cossacks shaved their heads, leaving only a lock of hair on the top, called “oseledets” (herring). When it grew out to be long enough, Cossacks would tuck it behind their ear. They would never cut their moustaches, instead letting them grow out, often smearing them with something that could help hold shape and curling them upwards. Cossacks regarded it as a particular symbol of their glory and honour. A braid on the head signified that the Cossack warrior is in the state of holy war and ready to die at any moment for his land and family. A Cossack who took another Cossack’s life, had to lie down on top of the casket of the one he killed and be buried alive. This was a demonstration of the fraternal principle, according to which all Cossacks were brethren and promised to live together in harmony without harming one another. If the killer happened to be a brave Cossack, beloved by his fellows, he had a chance to evade death either by way of common accord of his brothers-in-arms or by serving another punishment. Cossack’s boats were double-hulled, with ballast attached between the hulls, partially submerging the vessels. As Cossacks approached their enemy, the ballast was released and the boats full of Cossacks resurfaced, as if appearing from the bottom of the sea.

Kyiv Slavic In 2012 Kyiv will celebrate 1530th anniversary of its astonishing history. The whole story began in the legendary time of Kyi, Polan Prince and the founder of Kyiv’s rule. He himself, his brothers Shchek and the sister Lybid liked the location on the Dnipro hills. It was here, on the steep right bank, that they had founded the city that, in honour of their oldest brother Kyi received the name of Kyiv. There is a custom regarding the monument to the founders of Kyiv (that in itself is the symbol of Kyiv) among Kyivites: newlyweds arrive to the monument on their wedding day to literally heap it with flowers as the token of long and happy family life. Importantly, the honeymooners must stand with their backs to the monument and toss the bridal bouquet right into the boat. If they do make it, then their wedlock will be blessed. The Great Bell Tower of Lavra is tilted by 62 cm to south-east; however, unlike the famous Tower of Piza, the Great Bell Tower of Lavra does not fall. According to recent researches, the oldest human appeared on the territory of the modern Ukraine around 700 to 800 thousand years ago. The layers with artifacts recently discovered by archeologists attest to the fact that ancient dwellers already mastered fire and knew hunting.

Kyiv Spiritual
Researchers maintain that St. Sophia Cathedral is the oldest structure in Kyiv. Its ensemble of unique wall paintings is the oldest exhibit of Ukrainian monumental painting. These fresco paintings are almost one millennium old. Their total area is 3,000 sq m. Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra is one of the most important sacred sites of Orthodox Christianity. Its central entrance to the monastery opens under the arch of St. Trinity, one of the many Lavra’s churches. A popular belief exists that by going through the Holy Gates twice (going in and coming out is sufficient), one is purged from all sins. Two chapels in the lower part of Lavra stand over the wells dug by Venerable Anthony and Theodosius Pecherskyi. Though the two wells are close to one another, each has differently tasting water. According to the legend, the tastes match the different personalities of the church elders, one milder and mellower, the other – more severe and stricter toward the monks.

«Romantic Kyiv» (for groups of 15 persons + 1)
(for couples) The tour is dedicated to rather special feelings – love in a big city and love of the city itself. These feelings can inspire and add a new sense to life, help create masterpieces - or sometimes push one to extremes. We would like to acquaint you with Kyiv and reveal some of its secrets… and to do this in a way that will inevitably leave you forever in love with this wonderful city and wishing to come back here time and again. Day 1 Arrival to Kyiv and meeting at the railway station. We invite you to start your acquaintance with the city from the “Love Stories of Kyiv” tour. Many such stories have occurred throughout the existence of this old city. The tour will start from St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral with wall paintings by Vrubel and Vasnetsov, who enshrined the image of his beloved wife with a child in the icon of Our Lady. The tourists will see the Museum of Eastern and Western art, the Kyiv Opera House, the Sofia Square with St. Sophia Cathedral and all its splendor and refinement of Ukrainian baroque, and St. Andrew’s church. Then the group will continue to what is probably the most romantic street in Kyiv – the Andriyivskyi Descent – and further on to the neighborhood of Podil (as the popular song goes, “there is no Kyiv without Podil”). Podil will reveal its unique spirit, its narrow streets waiting for a chance to tell lots of interesting stories. A special magic event - a workshop in pottery - will await our guests at noon; everyone willing will have an opportunity to sit at the wheel and make something unique and exclusive as a keepsake. Day 2 A big city attracts great people and inspires them to outstanding deeds. Many well-known citizens of Kyiv left a significant mark in history and, in some case, on the architectural face of

their favorite city. The tour “Extraordinary Houses of Unusual Kyivites” will show guests some of the most interesting architectural masterpieces. Right next to the Golden Gates the towers with a distinct medieval castle look catch our eye - right, it is the House of Knight! Wait, is it a real dragon hiding up there on top? Or is it Zmey Gorynych from Slavic tales? You will discover a fantastic gargoyle on the wall of one building behind the «House of Doctor». Next stop is Dytynetz where prince Volodymyr’s palaces once stood and before his time, as legend has it, three brothers-founders of Kyiv - Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv - had settled. After a little stop the guests will have a chance to walk into the «fifth dimension» slipping through the wall to peek into the peephole of Master’s door... Welcome to the Museum of the famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov! Day 3 Pechersk has always been the place for aristocracy. That’s why the district boasts a great number of delicate architecture and expansive parks - you will see them during the tour “Parks and Palaces of Pechersk”. You will be stunned by Kyiv’s most amazing building, the House of Chimeras. Actually, you will see many marvelous buildings, each with a history and an architectural ginger of its own: the Chocolate House, the House of the Weeping Widow, the House of National Bank, the Poets’ House, Klovskyi and Mariyinskyi Palaces. Stop at the observation deck to admire a fantastic view of the city. After that, walk through through ex-Imperial Garden to the Bridge of Love. The tour ends with a return to the Khreshchatyk Street, the focus of vibrant life in the downtown where all locals and visitors flock and where time passes almost unnoticed. Accommodation in double rooms, breakfast, entrance tickets and excursions, railway station-hotel transfer, group support, medical insurance, free place for group organizer. * The tour operator reserves for himself the right to change the tour price in the event of substantial change of market situation, e.g, due to the holding of EURO 2012 events in the city, changes of current legislation or currency exchange rates.

An interesting fact: As early as the 19th century, a custom existed in Ukraine for a young girl to come to the house of a young man that she liked, to tell him and his parents about her wish to marry their son. In 99% of the cases, things went the young lady’s way, because a refusal from a man would mean deep disgrace to him and his family. The Museum of Miniatures in Kyiv Pechery Lavra displays the world’s smallest electric motor, designed by Mykola Siadrystyi, the master of microminiatures. The motor is 1/20 mm3 in volume, almost 20 times smaller than a poppy seed. Or would you rather prefer to see a rose inside a human hair? Or a shod louse? The oldest sculpture ever found in Ukraine is a stone woman idol: it dates back to 5th-4th century B.C.

Kyiv on the Dnipro The Dnipro River is one of the longest (2,201 km) in Europe and, at the same time, the largest river in Ukraine. It runs for 981 km along the territory of our country. In ancient times the Dnipro River was known under various names. For example, the ancient Greek historian Herodotus referred to it in his treatises under the name of Borisphen (that is, «a river that runs from the North»). Roman historians would call it the Danapris – the name that with time transformed into Dnipro. In the times of Kyivan Rus, it was called Slavutych (the river of Slavs) and was a part of the great trade route (historically known as “the Route from the Varangians to the Greeks”) that connected the Baltic region to the Greater Black Sea region. Kyiv is located on seven hills around the Dnipro River. The city extends for more than 20 km along the river and has more than 40 river islands within its limits. The Trukhaniv Island and the Hydropark are by far city’s most known riverside recreational areas: sandy beaches, water and sports amusements, discotheques – really, not many European capitals can boast of something similar within arm’s reach from the city center.

«Landscape and Historic Parks of Ukraine» (for a group of ten minimum)
Ukraine is extremely rich in wonderful parks and gardens that make truly national historical, cultural, scientific, and aesthetic heritage of our people. Kyiv is listed among the greenest cities in the world, perfectly suited for outdoor recreation; in 19th and 20th centuries Kyiv was called «the Garden City». As Rockwell Kent, a distinguished American artist, said once, «I’ve seen many city parks but this is the only time I saw a city in the park - it’s Kyiv». Famous Kyiv chestnut trees that spring to lush blossom in May, sometimes even twice a year, have become the symbol of the city. The park belt of Kyiv makes one of the most popular sightseeing routes and is beautifully suited for recreation and contemplation when the Eternity itself comes out of the green to share with you secrets of serenity and freedom. Day 1 Arrival to Kyiv. Check into the hotel. An overall sigthseeing tour of the city with a visit to St. Sophia Cathedral, one of the main Christian sacred places in Eastern Europe. Day 2 A whole-day trip to Uman, to Sofiyivka Dendrological Park, one of the most exquisite creations of the world gardening art laid out by rich Polish magnate Count Pototsky for his wife Sofia. The park resembles a piece of Ancient Hellas which fact is no wonder in itself since Sofia was of Greek origin.
Day 3 A tour of Kachanivka, one of the biggest landscape gardens in Ukraine and whole Europe. The site is unique not because of its area but because it has accumulated some of the best in the international gardening art and Ukrainian nature. The Palace and Park Complex in Kachanivka is listed in the National Register of Cultural Heritage. Day 4 A walking tour of Kyiv Parks on the banks of Dnipro. A leisurely walk in one of Kyiv’s parks is, without a doubt, one of the best types of recreation in Kyiv. Enjoy the nature, indulge in the serenity and quiet, breathe the clear air, and all this in the very heart of the capital! The route includes: Mariyinskyi Park, a panorama of Dnipro banks, the City Garden, the Dinamo Stadium and Le Chateau de Fleur, Khreshchatyi Park, St. Volodymyr’s Hill. Mariyinskyi Park was laid out in a landscape, the so-called English, style. The park is famous for the Mariyinskyi Palace located in its midst. The Mariyinskyi Palace was erected long ago by the Empress Yelizaveta charmed with serenity and perennial beauty of the site. The tour ends at the opposite hill, the St. Volodymyr’s Hill from where the guests will discover for themselves another viewpoint of Kyiv and get a chance to think over how it could be that the very downtown of a megapolis like Kyiv can coexist with hills covered in woods. The end of the stay in Kyiv; transfer to the airport.
Hotel accomodation as per the rating; transfers with touring guide. Sightseeing and touring services as per the itinerary. Entry tickets, breakfasts and dinners every day. The group leader or tour coordinator will be serviced free of charge. * The tour operator reserves for himself the right to change the tour price in the event of substantial change of market situation, e.g, due to the holding of EURO 2012 events in the city, changes of current legislation or currency exchange rates.

«The Uman Marvel and Parks of Kyiv»
The Sofiyivskyi Park in Uman is justly regarded as the most exceptional one in Ukraine. Count Stanislav Pototskyi laid out this park in 1796 and gave it the name of Sofiyivka in honour of his spouse Sophia. It was conceived by the creators as a vivid illustration to Homer’s «Iliad» with each composition or molding hiding a certain intention, reflecting idea of a myth or event. This is, without any exaggeration, one of the best man-made creations that fully matches many popular ancient parks of Europe.
Day 1 Meeting the group at the railway station. A bus sightseeing tour during which the guests will visit the most prominent sites of Kyiv: the Starokyivska mountain, the St. Sophia Square, St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral, the European Square, the Independence Square, the Poshtova Square, embankments of the Dnipro river, the Askold’s Grave, and the monument to the founders of Kyiv. A walking tour of the Ancient Capital of Kyiv Rus with guided tours of St. Sophia Cathedral, St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral and St. Andrew’s Church, the landmarks that cannot be overlooked.
Day 2 An out of city guided tour to the Land of Uman Marvel. During the tour of the park, the guests will become acquainted with its history and life story of the Pototskiy family, the collection of greenery, park sculptures and mysterious corners. Day 3 A bus tour of Kyiv’s most attractive and exquisite parks and gardens, among them: the Mariyinskyi Park, the Ascold’s Grave and Dnipro’s Steeps Parks.

«The Battle of Kyiv» Military tour
(20+1 groups minimum)
«Kyiv was bombed, and we were told of the war that suddenly broke...». For the Soviet people that song stood as a symbol of the beginning of WWII. In July-September, 1941 an immense battle for Kyiv between the Red Army and Wehrmacht began; the battle was a part of the bigger offensive Plan Barbarossa. Heroic defence of the city on the banks of Dnipro lasted for more than two months. That fight for the ancient Slavic city made it into the roster of WWII’s biggest defense campaigns. Having had lost hundreds of thousands in killed and captured, the Soviet troops had to leave Kyiv. After a devastating defeat under Stalingrad and the Kursk Salient, the Nazi command made Kyiv its key stronghold on the Dnipro river turning it into the so-called impregnable «Eastern Wall». Nevertheless, after heavy all-out battles of Bukrin and Liutezh beachheads, troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front did cross Dnipro, overwhelmed enemy’s defences and liberated Kyiv in November, 1943. Day 1 Arrival. Welcoming dinner with a folk music show in a traditional Ukrainian restaurant. Day 2 Sightseeing tour with a visit to St. Sophia Cathedral, one of the most renowned fresco and mosaic art monuments included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. An overview of the Golden Gates, the main entrance to the medieval city of Kyiv; St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery; monuments to Princess Olha and Prince Volodymyr, the Baptizer of Kyivan Rus; the remains of Desiatynna Church (the Church of the Tithes), the first stone church in Rus; St. Andrew’s Church, Italian architect Rasterlli’s masterpiece.
