THE love of money has been said to be the root of all evil; however, the lack of it causes so many evil. In a country where a few have much too much money and the many who are poor have almost nothing, we have fears of consequences hor rible even to contemplate, like that of a “social volcano” ready to erupt. For a society to continu ously have such a highly stratified economic set-up, rectifying social wrongs has been the battle-cry to advance social justice, equity and a kind of development that puts the people at the center of progress. In a highly skewed societal setup, there is that imperative need to launch a collectiv ist counter culture against the lethal combination of powerlessness, apathy and greed. The people’s collec tive struggle emanating from the strength of the human spirit will bring forth, in the long term, a society that is more humane and just. In 1966, a few good men and women led by Atty. Mordino Cua trail-blazed a progressive path to serve the people by organizing a cooperative named after its place of birth, the Oro Integrated Cooperative Drawing the Poor into Development Processes

PHIL-CHINA WATCH

AS the dust and din from the Pelosi-Tsai caper and the US-China test-of-wills set tles, we can now see clearly who the winners and los ers are from the one-week geopolitical drama. The standout winner is with out any doubt the People’s Republic of China (PROC) scoring a knockdown of all its opponents in just Round 1, and the biggest loser is clearly Tsai Ing-wen, the Democratic Progres sive Party (DPP) and the Taiwanese independence movement as well as the Taiwanese people as a whole. The United States of American was the emperor that lost its clothes in the im broglio, suddenly stripped of all its hubris and brag gadocio as its warships and aircraft carriers scampered off to safe distances just watching and waiting for what else the People’s Lib eration Army Navy, air force and rocket force would do, unlike its actions in 19951996 3rd Taiwan Strait Crisis where two US carrier groups sailed through and around the Taiwan Strait taunting the PROC 27-years ago. Now the US cannot con front the PROC head-on with the demonstration of its massive force to confront and subdue any challenge to its control of the Taiwan Strait and ability to over come any defense of the Taiwan Island to thwart the eventual and peaceful re-unification of the mo mentarily alienated island of the coast of Fujian province. This message reverberates too among the Taiwanese people and methinks this will give the Taiwanese vot ers some added degree of wisdom. There is a forthcoming November Taiwan local election, where PROC’s message in the 4th Taiwan Strait Crisis, the current one with its demonstration of total control of the secu rity situation of the Taiwan Strait and island, and its sampling of 2,000 Taiwan exports to China with a punitive ban, may provide a pedagogical moment to the young Taiwanese voters who have been giving the DPP its margins of victory in the national elections of 2016 and 2020. The DPP had been, how ever, weak in the Novem ber 2018 local elections and lost 15 out of 22 local chiefs’ election to the Chinafriendly Kuomintang. This year may be no different, for aside from the appar ently successful KMT local government chiefs is this ad ditional campaign platform of “a friendly China is better than an angry China” which is a message that would likely echo until the 2024 National Elections. China’s economic sanctions may improve their voting IQ. China and Hong Kong combined is still Taiwan’s largest export market. Ship ments totaled more than USD16 billion in July 2022, compared with nearly USD7 billion in total exports to the US. How can US help at all in that respect, there is simply no alternative for Taiwan but the Chinese mainland market. Even ex porting to the rest of the world won’t work for that would be such a segmented market that cannot equal the economic viability of the China market. The China Customs Ad ministration has suspended imports of more than 2,000

ORO INTEGRATED COOPERATIVE, PEOPLE’S LEADING EDGE otherwise known as the OIC. With a measly P88 as its starting capital but firmly relying on the organizers’ strong abiding faith on the time-honored and universally-accepted co operative principles and values, the OIC, after 54 years, has grown by leaps andToday, bounds.OIC serves its members financially with a capital of 8.9 billion pesos , money that they themselves own and manage to liberate them from the clutches of economic difficulties. Today, OIC stands as a formidable ally of the poor – the farmers, the fisherfolk, women, workers, vendors, drivers, lowly government employees – constituting a development force of some 193,000 strong members being served in 20 branches in Cagayan de Oro and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and Tagbilaran City who are now engaged in medium, small and micro enterprises. In its own right, OIC has equalized financial opportu nities for the marginalized sectors through its twelve fi nancial windows front-lined by its twelve branches that provide regular and privilege loans. While commercial banks have considered the poor non-bankable, here is a cooperative that thinks otherwise. Indeed, when the poor harness their col lective potentials and pool their resources together, it is just magical and wondrous! OIC has provided the empowering path to the helpless, the downtrodden and the oppressed as it hits the crux of the problem. Studies have shown that poverty is rooted in the disempowerment and the social exclusion of the people. As such, the only remedial mea sure is to empower the poor to craft their own destiny. They must put their future into their own hands – not to the politicians, not through grants, not to development agencies be government or non-government organiza tions – but through their own efforts. In truth, it is only they who can liberate themselves from the vicious ness of poverty because un less they act for their own welfare, all the outpourings of development assistance will be for naught. By: LAURO C. NADAYAG Teacher III Laguindingan National High School Covid-19 has brought so much disaster to the entire world. It not only affects the individual life and works of the people, but it also disturbs the educational process. Yet, the Department of Education never allowed the health crisis to bug them down. The of ficials looked for certain and possible ways to continually provide quality education to the learners which gave birth to the Distance Learning Mo dality. With the application of the mentioned modality, learners were able to continue their educational journey. More than anything else, learners are very excited for their comeback in school. With the fast approach ing face to face classes as approved by the Department of Education with the bless ing from the President, the schools are preparing their classrooms and environment to be safe, child-friendly and conducive for learning. In lieu with that, all public schools are oblige to con duct the Brigada Eskwela from August 01 to 22, 2022. School classrooms are sanitize and disinfected, health kits are readily available in school, health protocols as man dated by the Department of Health and IATF are strongly observed and mandated in the school vicinity. Parents, private organizations and lo cal government units’ dwell and devoted their extra time, effort and donated things which can be of great help to the schools that can be used to repair facilities that needs repair. These days, technology is embedded into our culture and our everyday lives—from smart phones to smart homes. Today’s learners expect the same kind of technological innovations to enhance their educational experience. For instance, learners say technol ogy helps their professors to be more efficient and effective in teaching classes, and they feel that technology helps them to be more efficient and effective learners. As learners’ digital lit eracy grows, teachers must match or surpass the level of technology learners’ use outside of the classroom. Learners are coming to us with much different demands than they did even five years ago. They are tech-savvy and tech-focused. They want to learn in ways that are more interactive—both in class and in the tools they use to learn. To be impactful, teachers cannot teach the way teachers in 20 years ago and expect to keep them involved and engaged in their studies, because the learners today do not learn the same way. Learners love modern technologies, and it’s easier to engage them in learning if the teacher use online learn ing techniques. Some key benefits of using technologies in teaching: interest learners in the educational process; keep in touch with learners; develop creative thinking; teach innovative things; and gain new learning experi ence. Learners are becoming digitally literate, and it affects theirMostself-development.significantlynow in the new normal teach ing ang learning set-up, as a teacher, it is of significant thrust that I would be able to indulge with this techno logical savvy strategies and scheme. This lobby knows no age, that is why both the young and the old teachers must be updated. However, I see this as an opportunity to harness more my teaching skills, and that this is not a hindrance to just sit still and relax. For all you know, it is not an easy job as a teacher, it is not an easy profession. Yet, with all mighty and in tegrity, I vow to always do my best in every endeavor I will undertake.

percent.Taiwan’s adversities now is the Philippines’ opportu nity, our government and its Cabinet secretaries should be alert to this and quick to take advantage by maintain ing and cultivating even better relations with the People’s Republic of China that President Bongbong Marcos has clearly directed to be treated as the “stron gest partner” of the Philip pines, instead what do some Cabinet members do? They alienate the PROC by poorly conceived public posturing. Take the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo in his meeting virtual meet ing last Aug. 6, 2022 where Manalo “welcomes possible WPS joint patrols with the US” (obviously targeted at China) followed by Depart ment of National Defense (DND) official last Aug. 12, 2022 said that such joint sea patrol can be “explored”. Can they just on their own reverse the decision of Presi dent Rodrigo R. Duterte in 2016 to shelve the idea of US-PH joint patrols in the SCS without PBBM’s direction?Sec.Manalo whom our think tank group admires for his professionalism seems to have been mindless in allow ing the Amboy (American boys) elements in media focus on this sensitiveness issue of US-PH joint sea patrols issue both to our ASEAN partners and to our major trading partner and now ODA provider China. Did he allow himself to be click-baited by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken into this totally irrelevant and anathema topic today? What about this highschool boy looking DND official, did he think that he could and should step into the realm of foreign policy now commenting on the joint patrol issue which a Philippine president had already shelved and the new president has not given any new direction on yet? These super-talkative but out-ofline officials are the bane of our national sovereignty, dismissing it every time they face an American and causing the Philippines to lose ground and face with our Asian partners. Editor’s note: The opin ions expressed in the fore going article are solely the author’s and do not reflect the opinions and beliefs of the Philippine News Agency (PNA) or any other office under the Office of the Press Secretary people through their own empowerment. While it banks on the grassroots initiatives of mobilizing resources for the poor, yet OIC could not be left behind technologically being the first cooperative to use an Automated Teller Machine dubbed the Pinoy Coop ATM.Ithas exemplified con cern for the communities and the environment in so many ways as it is the beacon of light amidst the darkness of poverty. When a cooperative bank was in distress as in the case of the Cooperative Bank of Misamis Occidental which had been put into receiver ship, OIC readily offered a helping hand in coordina tion with other cooperatives, as together they worked for its rehabilitation, the first of its kind in the whole country. Indeed, OIC is a kindred spirit to those in need.OIC has showcased what cooperativism should be, which is, a vehicle of social transformation. It has be come a feather in the cap of the cooperative movement not only locally but also nationally.TotheBoard of Direc tors chaired by Mr. Raul Pregon, management and staff headed by its amaz ing Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rene Hilot and all the hundreds of thousands of members of OIC, our firm salute for excellently draw ing the marginalized sec tors into the mainstream of development processes.
