By Al Stephen R. Lagumen Teacher III – DepEd Division of Cagayan de Oro City Are today’s teachers still worth emulating just like in the bygone years? The old adage claims that teaching is the noblest profession. Is this still applicable today? Or is teaching becoming less noble along with the passage of time? Filipino teachers have been given a manual as to how to carry themselves in the school, at home, or anywhere they are. The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers provides a clear guide that will protect and uphold the dignity of teachers in the Philippines. It clarifies the duty of teachers to the state, the community, the students, and their parents. As professionals, teachers are expected to possess good leadership skills because people in the society are looking up to them. They must actively involve in the community programs. Teachers are advised to refrain from gambling, smoking, drunkenness, and other excesses. They are also expected not to engage in any illicit affairs. However, it is sad to note that many among the teachers nowadays are guilty of violating this stipulation. Teachers should also be effective facilitators of the learning. As such, they need to religiously do their duties and responsibilities. For example, in giving grades, teachers must be willing to go through the rigor of the computing grades rather than just look up, hoping to see the grades of children in the sky. Whenever parents have a concern, the teacher should entertain them in the most respectful and polite manner.Professionalism can also be seen in the way a person dresses. As teachers, we must be dress decently. This is probably why DepEd teachers have been given four sets of uniform. I know how important it is for teachers to dress appropriately in front of the kids. When I was still in high school, my male classmates got everybody intrigued when they said that our beautiful science teacher is again wearing that uniform with a very short skirt. They said that we needed to watch closely when she discusses in front sitting down as we would surely see her panty. True enough, she would sometimes sit down while presenting the lesson, and I have seen the exact thing that my male classmates were talking about. Instead of focusing on the lesson, most of us males have a unified focus----the color of her panty! This was surely a distraction to our concentration. So, as teachers, it is important that we dress appropriately in front of the students. Prior to the crafting of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, the Philippine government already viewed the teachers with utmost respect. Such is the reflection of the Commonwealth Act 578, which declared the teachers as persons of authority just like the uniformed personnel. It connotes that we as teachers are to be respected in the discharge of our duties and responsibilities. With that being said, are we doing enough to convince people to treat us with high regard? The truth is, when people see professionalism in us all the time, they will respect us even without being told.

ILIGAN City Mayor Frederick Siao reassured residents Thursday that coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) booster shots are not mandatory but still "encouraged." Siao issued the clarification following the furor created by his Executive Order (EO) No. 12A, which contained language that appears to make the booster shots compulsory for government employees and workers assigned in public places. Part of the OE's title reads: "Enjoining City of Iligan Contractors, Operators, Employees in the Local and National Offices..." "Enjoining only means 'encouraging' that we should get booster shots, as what was instructed by the national IATF (InterAgency Task Force) to all local government units," he said. Siao underscored the importance of those in the public and private sectors who are constantly in contact with the public to be fully vaccinated, including booster doses. The EO also covers individuals in the academe and barangay officials. The clarification came after the EO also drew criticisms online when a local mall reportedly required those entering its premises to be boosted with Covid-19 vaccines. (PNA)

In an interview Friday, Emmylou Presilda, Department of Agriculture in Caraga Region (DA-13) information chief, said the activity aims to challenge the young generation in the region to contribute to the overall efforts in food security and sufficiency. “The five youth organizations started to develop their vegetable gardens in June this year, and after three months, we will evaluate the progress of these endeavors,” Presilda said. The groups are applying various gardening strategies and farming techniques to ensure high vegetable production from their projects. The clusters include the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Butuan City; the SK of Bayugan City in Agusan del Sur; the 4H Club of Bislig City; and 4H Club of Tandag City, all in Surigao del Sur, and also the SK of Surigao City in Surigao del Norte. “This will be concluded by the second or third week of September, where winners of the contest will be announced,” Presilda said. The projects of the participants will be showcased in their respective localities to encourage more youth groups to engage in urban farming. Presilda said the activity has gained the support of the local government units, seeing it as a potential development project for the different youth organizations in their respective areas. (PNA)

BANKS left the rediscount facility of the central bank untouched in July as there was ample liquidity in the financial system. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said in a statement on Monday that its peso rediscount window was untapped anew last month following the P7.52billion loan taken out by a universal bank in June that put borrowings for the first six months at P11.6 billion. The Exporters’ Dollar and Yen Rediscount Facility (EDYRF) was also untouched in July. The last time an availment was made under the EDYRF was a dollar rediscounting loan in 2016. In 2021, banks only borrowed from the facility in June, July, and September. These peso rediscount loans amounted to P6.12 million. The BSP’s rediscount window gives banks access to additional money supply by posting their collectibles from clients as collateral. In turn, banks may use the cash — denominated in peso, dollar or yen — to extend more loans to their corporate or retail clients and service unexpected withdrawals.“Excessliquidity in the financial system picked up in July 2022 and continued, thereby reducing the need for banks to tap the BSP rediscounting facility,” Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in a Viber message. “Banks also have other options to get funding, such as through the interbank market as well as through the capital markets, instead of BSP rediscounting facilities,” Mr. Ricafort said. M3, which is considered as the broadest measure of liquidity in an economy, grew by 6.9% to P15.4 trillion in June year on year.Meanwhile, preliminary data from central bank showed outstanding loans of big banks expanded by 12% to P9.9 trillion in June from P8.8 trillion in the same month of 2021. This was the fastest loan growth seen in more than three years or since the 12.4% in April 2019. The easing of nonperforming loans (NPL) of banks also reduced the need for lenders to tap the BSP rediscounting facility, Mr. Ricafort added. “The FIST (Financial Institutions Strategic Transfer) Law also gives banks greater flexibility to dispose nonperforming loans and nonperforming assets (NPAs) that also lessens the demand for BSP rediscounting,” he said. The banking industry’s gross NPL ratio went down to 3.75% of their total loan portfolio in May from 4.49% a year ago. It is also lower than the 3.93% seen in April. The May NPL ratio is the lowest since 3.72% in January 2021.

Kung hindi dumating si Dr. Guiab, patay na sana si Sul tan Mamaco who was already wounded. The good doctor saved his life.” The death of the “Father of Wao” could have triggered an all-out war between the Christians and Moslems with the partici pation of the “Blackshirts” where hundreds if not thou sands could have died. Dr. Guiab’s courageous act was that pre-emptive move. Wow, so amazing. The book has showcased several narratives manifesting miraculous in stances when one puts his life in God’s Hands. The couple’s amazing life of service that has somehow touched-base with tran scendental spiritual dimen sion has catapulted Wao to greater heights. When Atty. Remedios Galutera-Guiab served as the Municipal Mayor from 1988 to 1998, her outstanding leadership had transformed troubled Wao into a developmental show window where local officials would visit and then to emulate. Her 10-year transformative mayorship had harnessed the collec tive power of the people to advance transformative co operative for people, planet, prosperity and peace. The outstanding Mayor had left a legacy manifesting the truism that foremost is the human capital and that the development of human po tentials must be the priority so that “that celestial fire” in one’s heart must throb in consonance with God’s will that must exemplify the inter-connectedness and oneness of life which is indeed true love. Amidst the contempo raneous morale collapse, religious apathy and deni gration of spirituality, it has become imperative to read this book that will somehow unfetter humanity from the mundane to go to the sub lime. Indeed, we are more than form (body) as we are consciousness (spirit). When one puts his/her life in the Hands of God, it is in consonance with the biblical line, “What would profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his soul.” Putting our lives in the Hands of God will be an exemplification of Consciousness that is now pervading in the universe to unfetter humanity from collective insanity brought about by an egoic mindset and compulsive thinking. The collective insanity of humanity that has sacrificed the people and the earth to the alter of greed and profit should now be countered otherwise the unimaginable will become imaginable, the end of life on earth. No way will the Supreme Being allows that! Thus, it has become urgent and imperative to put one’s life in the Hands of God. How? Please read Dr. Guiab’s book, “Lives in the Hands of God.”

veneration to the profit mo tive that has already cap tured the mindset of all gov ernments, all institutions, all universities and even or religious groups, there is no greater grandeur sight on earth than a compassionate couple, fired with a great purpose, dominated by one unwavering aim- to serve the people especially the poor, to protect their health and the environment and to be transformative for people, planet, prosperity and peace. What happens when one’s life is put in the Hands of God? Then, the Will of God looms where the univer sal intelligence governs as what happened on Febru ary 12,1975 when a group of Christians came to the Guiab’s house to report that there was an on-going ex change of gunshots between Christians and Moslems. Upon being informed and without hesitancy in his pajamas, Dr. Guiab drove his jeep to the place where the shooting was – in the house of no less than Sul tan Mamaco Salipada, the Maranaos’ over-all chieftain known as the “Father” of Wao who allowed the entry of thousands of settlers to Wao from the 50s to the 60s, it was then the height of the ILAGA offensive led by Kumander Kidlat. As narrated by those present, “Dr. Guiab walked into the melee and asked everyone to stop shooting. “From time to time, there appear on the face of the earth, men and women of consummate excellence who dazzle us by their virtue, and whose outstanding qualities shed a stupendous light. Like those extraordinary stars whose origins we are igno rant and whose fate, once havethey vanished we know even less, such men and women have neither forebears nor descendants, they are the ofwholetheir race.”

“The feast is ready, but those who were invit ed were not worthy to come.” (Mt 22,8) With these words in the par able about a king who invited guests to a feast, we are reminded that we have to be ready to face God in judgment, because he can call us anytime.Weknow that death can come to us anytime. Without developing a gloomy outlook in life but simply to be realistic, we should somehow consider each day as our last day of our life here on earth. That way, we would be more motivated to prepare ourselves to meet God and to be very dis cerning about what truly counts in life, knowing that we can easily get confused and lost, tossed to and from and carried away by the changing conditions of our daily life.Just the same, know ing that we can never be sufficiently prepared for death, we should not be afraid to face God in judgment, since God is always willing to offer us mercy, just as Christ offered mercy to those who crucified him. We should just at least show some signs of repentance at the moment of death. In other words, we have to be eternity-ready all the time, because we are meant for eternal life in heaven, and not just temporal life here on earth. Our life here on earth is just a testing ground to see if what God wants us to be, that is, to be his image and likeness, children of his, sharers of his life and nature, is also what we want ourselves to be.We therefore have to be constantly aware that in every event and con dition in our life here on earth, that ultimate purpose of our life is always considered and acted upon. We should try to avoid simply get ting lost in our temporal affairs.Inthis regard, it would be helpful to realize that since God is the creator of the universe, know ing him would lead us to know ourselves and everything else properly. And loving him would enable us to love ourselves and everything else prop erly as well. God, as fully revealed to us by Christ in the Holy Spirit, should always be the be-all and end-all of our life. Everyday, we should try to settle accounts with God. In fact, saints and the Church herself have recommended that we make a daily examina tion of conscience just before going to bed. This is to see if the day went as it should, that is, if love for God and neighbor is really the motive of all our actions, and so that we at least can be reconciled with God no matter how the day went. We should at least say sorry to God, even if we still have to do things to make up for our mistakes and sins. This is an important task, because more than just resting physically, mentally or emotionally, we need to be at peace with God at the end of the day. God is everything to us. Regardless of our status at the moment, whether good or bad, moral or immoral, God not only will tell us what to do but also will give us what we need at that time.God is always avail able, and what he gives us is also what we actu ally and ultimately need. What he gives us is at least the actual grace that we need to be able to act good. If corresponded to properly, the actual grace can bring back the state of grace to us.*

The Shakey’s group has five brands to date: Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar, Project Pie, R&B Tea, and Potato Corner.Potato Corner, which it agreed to acquire late last year, opened 101 new outlets in the first semester, bringing its outlet network count to 1,265 excluding those in Indonesia. “We are ready to scale up the business even more and we want to strengthen the roster of our brands to fuel growth for 2022,” Mr. Gregorio said. Despite being present in more than 38 countries, Potato Corner remains to be “under-penetrated” locally. More establishments in the country can be tapped for outlets of the food kiosk chain, Mr. Gregorio noted. Mr. Gregorio said: “In international, the floodgate has been opened, there have been a lot of inquiries and we just want to fine-tune our international program making sure it’s gonna be ‘wow-ing’ and profitable for all our franchise partners.”

In the age of information, where we are constantly looking to learn and explore new things, many people have become interested in de-emphasizing religion. As a result, some of society’s most cherished beliefs have been downgraded or ignored altogether. Humanism has played a prominent role in this effort. While the term may not be as well-known as “religion” or “Christianity”, it is just as important. This article explains what humanism is, its benefits and why we should focus on teaching it rather than discouragingHumanismit.is a philosophy of life that denies the existence of any gods and believes that people are capable of living fulfilling lives without relying on supernatural forces for guidance. It is the belief in man’s capacity for good, and also the philosophy or set of ideas that focuses on improving one’s character and principles with the aim of achieving happiness and fulfillment. It is about learning and teaching other people how to live their lives better. Some reasons why it should be taught in school instead of religion is that for students to learn, they have to use their thinking skills. Hence, humanism is ideal in improving this skill rather than religion. Humanists don't feel uneasy discussing humanistic ideas in areas where they are afraid to. They are prepared to explore any topic, challenge any idea, question any theory, and even disagree with some of them. They wish to be responsible for their decisions and conclusions and having control over them is a Humanismprerequisite.also prioritizes human significance and seeks to promote human values to further human interests. It regards humanity as the center of concern and encourages human wisdom rather than divine power or worship. It encourages people to respect their diverse religious experiences and encourages them to interact with those who might differ. It does not consider religion obsolete, but it embraces alternative beliefs that do not stem from a deity. Furthermore, humanism is a philosophy that places importance on the individual and human potential. When humanism is taught instead of religion, it can help develop a more compassionate world in which individuals are encouraged to learn, feel, and understand each other. There are many ways to be religious, but being human seems like something most people would rather not think about. So many people are taught from a young age that their beliefs are legitimate if they believe in God; and even though most of us have questions about our own faiths when we get older, we tend to avoid asking them because it makes us appear foolish. We should instead be focusing on teaching people how to think – and secular thought is one of the strongest ways to do that. In an increasingly heated culture war, we should be calling for less division and more collaboration between different groups of people. the government is finding ways to address the current issues in the local sugar industry. On the sidelines of an economic forum organized by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines and the San Miguel Corp. on Wednesday at the Ayuntamiento de Manila, Balisacan said the biggest challenge for the country’s sugar sector is the insufficient volume in the domestic market.Balisacan said the cause of the rising sugar prices in the country is the insufficiency of the supply as the economy expands.“There’s an ongoing exercise right now because we are preparing some papers —some strategic paper(s) for addressing this kind of issue,” he told reporters. Balisacan, who is also the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) director general, said the government needs to sit down with sugar planters and industry players to have a “clear picture” of the gap on supply and demand of sugar.“We need to see what the production potential of our sugar industry vis-à-vis the demand. Obviously, the demand for sugar is quite elastic, meaning it grows with the economy. So total requirements, total volume is likely to rise. So the question is: Can the production catch up with the demand?” he added.Balisacan said stakeholders should look into the capability of sugar producers if they are still able to expand their farming land and if they are using high-yield plant varieties “to give confidence that productivity is going to rise” as farming land has not increased much because of other demands for land.

SHAKEY’S Pizza Asia Ventures, Inc. said that it will be fully exhausting the remaining P362 million from its capital expenditure budget this year on store expansions of its five brands in the second half.“The team will be busy with expanding these brands and that is the priority but we’ll be on the lookout for any ‘wow-ing’ or fantastic opportunity that may come. If it comes, it comes, but what we’ll be focusing on is growing organically with the brands that we have now,” Shakey’s President and Chief Executive Officer Vicente L. Gregorio said during the Philippine Stock Exchange’s Star Investor Day on Wednesday. In the first half, the company spent P288 million from its largest capital expenditure budget to date — P650 million — for store network expansion. “We had the highest allocated budget for this year compared to anytime in Shakey’s history,” Mr. Gregorio said.As of June this year, the company’s existing brands opened 10 new stores from 316 last year: seven companyowned and three franchiseeowned.

“The brands that we have — Shakey’s, Peri-Peri, and Potato Corner — have the potential to grow domestic and international,” he added.

He said the island city-state is “seriously looking now to Mindanao” as potential sources of food supplies. Milan said he is optimistic the local supplier would create a good impression on the quality of the products, and hoped the local market of Singapore would favorably accept the fresh fruits as it would determine the viability of succeeding shipments. “This is a trial shipment. That’s why, we are hoping against hope that the initial shipment will turn out good so that we will have a repeat (shipment) and a wider product line,” he said. He said they are hoping they could ship to Singapore via a direct sea linkage from Mindanao. “This is just for us to be able to enter, but the longterm plan is to ship it directly via ships going to Singapore,” he said.

Hiding with their families in the mountains between Agusan del Sur and Bukidnon during his time with the NPA, 63 members of their clan died in the encounters with the military, Man-anohog recalled. Juaneza vowed to continue pursuing the rural electrification program with a goal of totally covering all the villages and communities in the country. He noted that the program already reached 87 percent of Mindanao.

MAKING FINE BEVERAGES CORP. 213 Banawe Street, Brgy. Manresa, Quezon City, Philippines residences would be directly affected by the proposed railway line,” Duterte said. The P81.6billion MRP is one of the flagship projects under the past Duterte administration. Its TagumDavao-Digos segment of the 100-kilometer line is expected to reduce travel time from Tagum City, Davao del Norte to Digos City, Davao del Sur Over... from page 1 from 2.5 hours to 1.3 hours. The three-phase MRP covers 1,530 kilometers of circumferential rail lines that will connect several areas in Mindanao, such as the Davao provinces and the cities of Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, and Zamboanga. But Duterte noted that the MRP rail line would pass through densely populated areas in Davao City, “without the appropriate geological surveys or proper public consultations with the affected communities”. Duterte said there were also reports that some politicians bought a vast parcel of land where the rail line will be constructed at a cheap price and are now selling it to the government 10 times or more than the original price. Barangay Catalunan Grande in Davao City has earlier passed a resolution opposing the MRP as it would affect several residences in their area, and "result to undue safety and health hazard, as well as noise pollution, to name a few." “There is a need to properly determine the correct and appropriate manner of identifying the areas where the MRP will traverse to ensure public safety and welfare while still being able to pursue the MRP for sustained growth and development in the region,” the lawmakers said. Still, Duterte and Yap acknowledged in the resolution that the MRP “will not only make travel faster but also safer, more convenient and comfortable for passengers in the said corridor”. The lawmakers said the probe will “ensure transparency and accountability on the use of public funds, while always keeping in mind the safety and welfare of the general populace in the delivery of public services”. (PNA) between the agricultural firm and Singaporean buyers highlighted the trade mission, which also generated interest for the island’s local crops including mango, cavendish bananas, coffee, and cacao. The mission, initiated by the Mindanao Development Authority, was participated in by 25 delegates from 18 companies, six national government agencies, and one local government unit from all six regions of Mindanao. Milan said the cargo Firm... from page 1 would be shipped via Singapore Airlines. One container van is estimated to contain around 1,500 boxes of fresh fruits at 12 kilos per box, he said. This will be the first time that export quality pineapples and papayas from Mindanao will penetrate Singapore, a potential market for local exporters, according to Milan. He added that about 96% of the food requirements of Singapore, a nation of 5.68 million people, are imported from other countries, particularly from its neighbors within the Association of Southeast Asian Countries. He said Singapore is very much concerned about food security amid the threats posed by international conflicts, particularly the Russian-Ukraine War, which could affect the global food supply.
