AVAO City – A business-tobusiness (B2B) matching session will be conducted to link local Halal producers with prospective national and international buyers during the three-day 7th Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Exposition on May 27 to 29 at the Abreeza Mall of Davao.

THE provincial government of Misamis Oriental has allowed the entry of cooked poultry products in the province from the areas that have been affected by the Avian Influenza virus (Bird flu), the Provincial Veterinary Office (ProVet) announced on Monday, April 11. Dr. Benjamin Resma, the provincial veterinarian, during the flag raising in the provincial capitol, said the changes were implemented in accordance to the new executive order issued by provincial Governor Yevgeny Vicente Emano recently. “Right now, we allow cooked, processed cooked poultry and by poultry products. Again, for those cooked only. But fresh, live, especially eggs and fertilized duck eggs (balut), we still prohibit them from entering the province,” Resma said.

New threat to Philippine eagle DAVAO City– Animal keepers at the Philippine Eagle Center have set up traps to catch a reticulated python that’s preying on animals inside their enclosure in Barangay Malagos, Baguio District in Davao City. This is after a juvenile Philippine eagle named ‘Espoir’ was found dead inside its enclosure at around 12:13 a.m. last April 5. Espoir, a French word for “Hope,” was an offspring of eagle parents Ariela and MVP Matatag. Last month, a Philippine subsidiary of global animal health company, Ceva Santé Animale, adopted the chick. The Philippine Eagle Foundation and Ceva signed a Memorandum of Agreement on the adoption of Espoir where the company pledged to provide an annual support of P200,000 to cover the eaglet’s food, keeper care, veterinary care, and shelter maintenance.

Rebel leader nabbed GOVERNMENT forces arrested a leader of the New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) allegedly involved in extortion in a joint operation here Tuesday evening. In a statement Wednesday, the Army's 4th Infantry Division (4ID) said Aldeem Yañez, of Barangay Iponan, works for the NPA's underground movement and does "ideological, political and organizational" works in parts of Bukidnon province. Yañez also facilitated the NPA's extortion activities in the urban areas of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon, 4ID said.

Filipino values among young learners in the new normal By MARIA FE S. BALANCAR

Seriously, learners of today have gone a major change. Their values have pronouncedly changed that you cannot almost see in most of them the Filipino values that the elders have treasured through the years. Indeed, it takes a village to raise children.

But how can the teachers help keep the Filipino values in the minds, hearts and in the actions of today’s learners? T h e v a lu e s of t o d ay ’s youth differ very much from those of the older generation. Nowadays, a lot of youngsters are affected by peer pressure,

is guidance of parents, and family crises, leading to their inappropriate behavior. The youth of older generations were diligent and family- oriented; now, a lot of the old values have been destroyed. Many of today’s problematic youths point to family problems, like families broken due to early marriage, teenage pregnancies, and, sometimes, “home wreckers.” However a lot of these can be prevented if, and only if, we are aware of what’s happening in our society. Their values are slowly sinking in the mud. Information in their generation is rapidly transmitted, unlike during our time. Nowadays, you have to b e stric ter in e ver ything. The youth of today are more aggressive and their morals are much lower because most parents find it easier to submit to their whims than to stand firm and teach values. How we teachers can help the parents? What can we offer in our Values Education classes in particular to help address the issue? When most persons talk about a school curriculum, they think about math, science, social studies, and language courses. Seldom do I hear or read about moral values as being part of the curriculum. The problem is that the neglect of teaching moral values in schools is hurting our students and c au s i ng probl e ms i n society. If a person has never learned any moral values, how is she or he able to discern the difference between right and wrong? That is basically the essence of moral values education.

Parental involvement in the learners’ early education By MARIA FE S. BALANCAR

Parent involvement typically involves parents’ behaviors in home and school settings meant to support their children's educational progress. Measures of parent involvement commonly include the quality and frequency of communication with teachers as well as participation in school functions and activities. According to Dearing et. al. (2004), parent involvement also characterizes parents’ values and attitudes regarding education and the aspirations they hold for their children. Although values and attitudes may not directly influence academic outcomes, they may enhance academic achievement indirectly by promoting children's motivation and persistence in challenging educational tasks. Parent involvement bridges two key contexts in children's early development, namely the home and school settings. Within an ecological framework, the home and school contexts are characterized as autonomous microsystems

and parent involvement is conceptualized as a mesosystem, which is made up of interactions between key microsystems. Although each setting can independently influence a child, together the home and school contexts interact to offer a unique influence. In this study parent involvement is conceptualized as a product of the interaction between the influences of school and home settings by providing continuity between the two environments. For example, if parents are aware of a teacher's instructional goals, they may provide resources and support for those learning aims at home. Similarly, in terms of social development, parent involvement may facilitate the development of consistent disciplinary approaches across home and school. Accumulating evidence suggests that these parenting practices are associated with higher academic success in the early grades, although links to socio-emotional outcomes remain less clear.

Life with people (Pt. 1) Think a minute… Have you ever thought how easy life would be if you did not have to deal with people? But it would also be very empty! In spite of our problems with people, they are what make our life worth living. Think about it. With no people, we have no love...and what is life without love? It is so true that at the end of our life, all that really matters are the people we shared it with. The sooner we learn how to live happily and successfully with people, the sooner we will have our best life possible. But the first step in learning is to unlearn our unhealthy, bad habits and ways of relating to others. We need to open our mind to new and better attitudes in getting along with people. If we ourselves are not willing to change, we cannot change our life. Fortunately, it’s never too late. I have seen people 80-years-old “turn and learn” how to better love and live with people. One of our bad habits of dealing with people is playing the “blame game”— whether it is a husband and wife blaming each other, a

Wealth of 8 Families Equal Combined Assets of 3.6 Billion People

ORLAN R. RAVANERA An Oxfam Study has concluded “that humanity has been buried in unbridled consumerism and materialism as there is so much veneration to the profit motive that has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and all religions while there is so much denigration of spirituality.” This is because the contemporaneous d e vel opme nt p ar a d i g m called neo-liberal capitalism also known as corporate g lob a lizat ion has b e en anchored on the “moneym u s t - g r o w p r i n c i p l e ,” and “growth-at-all-cost development strategy,” that has sacrificed the people and the environment to the altar of greed and profit under the regime of one percent as the wealth of one percent is greater than the combined assets of the ninety-nine percent of the world’s population. In fact, the combined wealth of eight richest families in the world equal the combined assets of 3.6 billion people. Such gross inequities have been justified by the rich and powerful as the offshoot of the principle of the “survival-of-the-fittest.” They are stronger, more powerful, more aggressive -thus, they have more, more, more wealth, more money, more power. But the survivalof-the-fittest principle works

only in a jungle-like existence where a stronger lion eats a cornered prey but not in a civilized society. Let notice be served to one and all that each one of us will be judged not on wealth, fame or power but on how we have served the “least of our brethren.” Development that is based on individual pursuit for self- aggrandizement and wealth, where money is used not to enhance life and the well-being of the people but to make more money is not anymore economically viable and ecologically sustainable. That kind of development (which is really mal-development) makes a few elites have much too much and the many who are poor much too little. In this country, you call that block capitalism where cartels and the oligarchs run the country, owned by only 50 families. To perpetuate their economic control, they must have a hold to political power including that of the media and continuing financial support to the churches. Look at Mindanao, so rich yet so poor where 70% of the land (the choicest) is under the control of big agri-business corporations (based on a study by the Development Academy of the Philippines). Where are the farmers, the so-called backbone of the nation? They are tilling lands not their own, of if they do, they are tiedup to mode of production and marketing that they have no control. They are in marginalized areas, in slopes where their carabaos will roll-over downhill even with a little push. Our country has also become a dumping ground of finished products and source of cheap raw materials which are processed abroad then sold back to us at

a high price. What a tragedy knowing that a country that is consuming what it is not producing will always be poor. The highly iniquitous development paradigm can be likened to the workings of an auto-immune disease syndrome (AIDS), there no less than the body’s defense mechanisms are attacking vital organs. In the absence of a major change, the global system will collapse in less than one hundred years. The unimaginable is becoming imaginable: the end of life on earth. Why is this so? Glaring is unsustainability in ecology manifested by climate change, melting of the iceberg (one thousand hectares of the 386-meter high iceberg in the Arctic and Antarctic melting every day), It is scientifically established that for every one degree Celsius increase in global temperature, there will be a corresponding ten percent reduction in food production. As climate change intensifies, insects’ bites will become fatal and can reach up to higher altitude. It is predicted that there will be at least one billion global refugees in the next 100 years. In the Philippines, 15 years from now, there will be some 35 million homeless Filipinos as it is scientifically established that in the next 15 years, the sea level will increase by 16 meters high (the height of 3-storey building) and the 7,100 islands will just be reduced to 300 islands. The second bitter reality is the unsustainability in the economy as only a few elites are in control of the resources. Who decides? Who controls? Who benefits? These oligarchs are using “trickle-down” approach to the masses as an

alibi. No Sir! No such thing. In so-called trickle-down approach, we just allow all those which have already passed the digestive system of cattle to be eaten by the poor. Today, as election day is fast approaching, let the Filipino people decide to elect those who will not follow elitist rule but to ef fect a paradigm shift from unsustainability to s u s t a i n a bi l it y. Mon e y should not be used to make more money but to improve the quality of life of the people. Enough is enough of economic development that benefits only a few. No less than a national leader of Myanmar by the name of Aung San Suu Kye, leader of the national league for democracy who had been imprisoned as a freedom fighter, had stressed the truism in her speech that “human development must now b e the fo cus and not consumerism and materialism.” Yes, HIGHT SA LAHAT, TAO. Let us now be awakened to liberate humanity, especially the Filipino people from the quagmire of so much u n b r i d l e d m at e r i a l i s m and consumerism and to br i ng b a ck spi r itu a l it y amidst morale collapse and religious apathy. Let the biblical line reverberate: “What would profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his soul.” Indeed, each one of us is consciousness (spirit) prior to becoming a form (body) and that cons ciousness should be connected to the Unseen Being, the Ocean of C onsciousness to be well-rooted with the Being who is Eternal. Feel that Consciousness Presence. Can you not feel that?

God is our all in all “He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag.” (Jn 12,6) These words were said of Judas Iscariot when he complained that the precious ointment that a woman used to anoint Christ’s feet could have been sold and the money given to the poor. That’s when Christ told him to “leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” (Jn 12,7-8) We have to be wary of our tendency to do some virtue signaling that is actually meant to hide some anomaly that we commit. Nowadays, this tendency is getting not only more common in private life, but more so in our public life. It looks like it has become a fixed feature in our world culture. One source defines virtue signaling as “the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate

one’s good character or the moral correctness of one’s position on a particular issue.” This is meant, of course, to undercut others who differ or contradict their views. Another source puts it as “a pejorative neologism for the conspicuous and disingenuous expression of moral values with the intent to enhance one’s own image.” Still another source describes it as taking “a conspicuous but essentially useless action ostensibly to support a good cause but actually to show off how much more moral one is than everybody else.” We should try our best to stay away from virtue signaling. But even more important than avoiding the vice of virtue signaling is the duty to be most honest in our temporal affairs, especially those involving money and other sources of powers. We have to practice a certain kind of detachment to see to it that our heart is not corrupted by them but is

made pure and whole for loving God and everybody else. This virtue of detachment would definitely require us to have purity of intention and to be most transparent in our transactions and eager to practice total accountability before God and also before everybody else. Without this virtue of detachment, there is no way we can keep ourselves uncorrupted, and that’s when we can be pressured to fall into all forms of cheating, hypocrisy, deception, virtue signaling, etc. Yes, we need to see to it that our intentions in all our earthly affairs are pure. And that means that we are only driven by love of God and neighbor, that what really and would only interest us is to give glory to God and to contribute to the common good. We need to convince ourselves that only by doing so can we attain what is truly good for us. We should avoid falling into the trap of

HINTS AND TRACES

ROY CIMAGALA the devil who would always tempt us to work only for our own personal interest, suggesting that that is where our true happiness would lie. And nowad ays, t hat kind of mentality has sadly become common. There is now a great need to dismantle that kind of attitude which definitely would require some self-sacrifice. But again, we have to remember that that is what Christ has told us --that we need to deny ourselves, carry the cross in order to follow him who is our all in all. (cfr. Mt 16,24; 1 Cor 15,28)

Family Resilience in Time of COVID 19 ALGINA B. CABANA Teacher I Medina Central School Medina North District

The Covid-19 crisis is a time when you should gauge your family’s resilience and bond more of it as possible. The Covid-19 pandemic is a disruptive event that is severely destroying and challenging the whole wide world. People in the society got affected. Many works disrupted and even worst come to an end. Every level of many governments and other sectors was devastated. Even the Education system was affected, business and our economies were all shattered. Families as well were upset. If you do not build resilience within your self you will be found broken pieces and a crisis or prolonged adversity can more likely divide family members, derail family functional and decision making and destroy value. How resilient is your family? How does your family deal with prolonged adversity, setbacks or crisis? What are you doing to help your family learn from this period and grow in capability? Your family’s goal should be not to just cope with the adversity it faces, but to grow stronger as a result of it most especially this pandemic we’ve been through. Early childhood education: Its significance By MARIA FE S. BALANCAR

Most childhood education specialists claim that young children learn best when they're not pushed too hard, they have an opportunity to interact with their peers, and their parents and instructors treat them kindly. Likewise, children learn best when instruction and educational activities are only a small portion of their days. This is especially true of children enrolled in pre-school programs since it's not good for young children to be separated from their parents for extended periods of time. Children usually

do not benefit in programs with inexperienced teachers and large classroom sizes. Children taught at an early age usually benefit in the following ways: improved social skills, less or no need for special education instruction during subsequent school years, better grades, and enhanced attention spans. Likewise, some researchers have concluded that young children enrolled in pre-school programs usually graduate from high school, attend college, have fewer behavioral problems, and do not

become involved with crime in their adolescent and young adult years. No matter the differences in opinion about formal prekindergarten education, children benefit from receiving some type of education during their early developmental years. However, there is not one-size fits all instruction best suited for all children. While some children benefit immensely from pre-school, it may not be the best educational setting for other children. In most cases, children benefit most by receiving educational instruction from their parents. Parents must evaluate a child's unique personality before determining which program is best suited for a child since not all programs benefit children the same way. people just because they are a little different than us, and we do not have to do any real thinking or care enough to truly get to know that person. Even though we hate it when someone labels and judges us like that! Remember, “The soft skills are the hard skills.” Precisely cutting and polishing diamonds takes far greater skill than smashing rocks with a hammer. It takes a bigger heart and mind to truly understand and love people as they really are and need. It takes more wisdom, strength, and social skill to see both the good and bad qualities of people, yet accept them and love them in such a way that they want to change and improve. After all, that is what we need them to do with us! Won’t you ask Jesus to start changing you? He wants to help you grow a bigger, more compassionate heart toward other people? He will also broaden and deepen your mind to start understanding and wisely loving each person, just as He does you. Just think a minute.

Revitalizing education in the 21st century By MARIA FE S. BALANCAR

Education used to be a oneshot game, now it has to be a lifelong game. You don’t just get educated once. You need to go in-between learning and work. You have to bring professionals into the classroom to teach. You have to work on projects for real organizations from the beginning, and you have to go out into the environment, into communities. You have to understand the real problems that people are facing so you can shape your learning around those problems rather than EXTRAJUDICIAL SETTLEMENT OF ESTATE

just look at a textbook. We need to completely reimagine education. Instead of learning to memorize facts and figures, students need to “learn how to learn” and how to solve problems. And they should be allowed to learn independently. Changes are needed at every level. You have to infuse things like entrepreneurship into the curriculum because with the disruption that’s going on, many people are going to have to create their own jobs. Moreover, texts regarding this pandemic’s consequences are appearing at an accelerating pace, with constant coverage

by news outlets, as well as philosophical, historical, and sociological reflections by public intellectuals worldwide. R ipples f rom t he c ur rent emergency have spread into t he p e rs ona l, s o c i a l, and economic spheres. But are there continuities as well? Is the pandemic creating a “new normal” in education or simply accenting what has already b ecome normal— an a c c el e r at i ng te nd e nc y toward technologization? This tendency presents an important c h a l l e n g e f o r e d u c at i o n , requiring a critical vision of post-Covid-19 curriculum.

Andanar backs wife’s bid for Congress party-list seat S URIGAO CITY – Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, also acting presidential spokesperson, on Monday announced his support for his wife’s bid for a seat in Congress through party-list. Alelee Aguilar-Andanar is now vying for a seat as the first nominee of the neophyte Bisaya Gyud (BG) Party-list, whose main thrusts are food security, education, shelter, and security. Aguilar-Andanar works as a fulltime entrepreneur in Las Piñas City, while heading a foundation that his father, former Las Piñas mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar, initiated. She is also supporting other affiliated non-government organizations, including the Philippine Cancer Society. “Saksi ako kung paano magmahal ng Bisaya si Alelee. Mula nang ikinasal kami, nakatali na rin ang puso niya sa mga Bisaya (I witnessed how Alelee loved Bisayans. Ever since we got married, her heart has been tied to

the Bisayans),” Andanar said as he recalled the pioneer advocacy that his wife has organized for youth in Siargao Islands in early 2000s. The PCOO chief shared that Alelee’s persistence helped build mini-libraries in barrios where there was little to no access to information and books for young Bisayans to learn from. “Dito ko nakita ang kanyang malasakit at pagmamahal sa mga kababayan nating Bisaya. Kaya nang magdesisyon siyang tumakbo, hindi na ako nagdalawang isip na suportahan si Alelee (I saw her concern and love for our fellow Bisayans. So when she decided to run, I did not hesitate to support Alelee),” he said. “Tiwala ako na ang kanyang pagmamahal sa Bisaya ay tutumbasan niya ng de kalidad na paglilingkod sa bayan. Naniniwala ako na may sapat siyang kakayahan at karanasan para iangat ang buhay ng mga Bisaya at disadvantaged sectors sa ating bansa (I am confident that his love for Bisayans

will be matched by quality service to the people. I believe that he has enough skills and experience to uplift the lives of the Bisayans and disadvantaged sectors in our country),” he added. Andanar is likewise urging the voting population, especially those coming from the Visayas and Mindanao regions, to support Alelee and the BG Party-list this coming May 9. “Suportahan po natin si Alelee. Hindi po masasayang ang boto nating mga Bisaya dahil siya ay may pusong Bisaya na kumakalinga sa lahat, higit pa sa isang Bisaya (Let's support Alelee. Our Bisayan vote will not be wasted because he has a Bisayan heart that cares for everyone, more than one Bisayan,” he said. It can be recalled that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Senator Christopher “Bong'' Go also expressed their support for the group. This was the only party-list of which the chief executive has openly given his support. (PR)
