T

HE Cagayan de Oro Chamber of C ommerce and Industr y Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) invites businessmen, entrepreneurs, and other interested parties to join the digital event "2nd Northern Mindanao Business Conference (NMBC)", to be held today, July 15, 2022 from 2pm to 5pm (Philippine Standard Time).

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) Region 10 is set to dispose of the five containers of smuggled agricultural products that had been seized at Mindanao International Container Terminal Services Inc. (MICTSI) yard in the PHIVIDEC Compound in Tagoloan town, Misamis Oriental on Thursday, July 7. Cris Angelo Andrade, BOC10 Information Officer, said that the P15 million worth of smuggled agricultural products are still at the container yard while waiting for the Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) to be issued by the bureau. “Last Friday [July 8, 2022] the issuance for WSD has already been recommended by our District Collector and it is already for approval by the Commissioner,” Andrade said in vernacular.

Scarce corn supply DAVAO City – The low supply of corn in the Davao Region has caused a plunge in chicken meat supply in the market as corn grains are considered a vital ingredient in poultry production, an official said Wednesday. “It is still due to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia as these two countries are among the biggest suppliers of corn in the world trade. With a low supply of corn, our poultry feed manufacturers also find it hard to meet the necessary production level,” said Alex Sibuan, market specialist of the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11). DA-11 records showed that the inflation rate for corn here has increased to 17.9 percent in June 2022 compared to the 4.8 percent inflation rate of the food item in the same month last year.

New Zambo airport NEGOTIATIONS are underway for some of the private lots that will have to be acquired for the planned new Zamboanga International Airport, according to the Zamboanga City government. Representatives of the City Planning and Development Office and City Assessor’s Office informed Mayor John M. Dalipe in a meeting on Tuesday that state-owned Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) has so far appraised 44 properties. “Out of 44 lots appraised by the Land Bank of the Philippines, 10 lots amounting to P152M are now subjects of negotiation,” the local government said.

Davao’s cacao industry lags behind global demand for chocolates By ANTONIO L. COLINA IV, MindaNews

DAVAO C it y – C a c a o production in the Davao Region has stagnated despite massive efforts to revitalize the industry amid the growing global demand for chocolates. Dante Muyco, chair of Davao Region Cacao Council, said during “Wednesdays Media Forum” at Habi at Kape in Abreeza Corporate Center that the region’s annual estimated production

level remains at 12,000 metric tons after years of attempts to double the yield. He said the region fell short of hitting its target due to various factors, including poor planting materials and failure to put in place a good monitoring system. “There have been massive plantings done in the past and the only problem was DEMAND/PAGE 11

Sabotage ruled out in ammo dump blaze: Army official

T

HE Army’s 4th Infantry Division (ID) has ruled out sabotage behind the explosion that destroyed the ammunition dump depot inside its headquarters, Camp Edilberto Evangelista, on Tuesday midnight.

Lt. Col. Vladimir Sta. Maria, the 4ID’s 10th Forward Service Support Unit commander, said the locks securing the depot’s metal doors were still intact, suggesting there was no forced entry. Sta. Maria noted that the facility has an updated safety inspection certificate as of March 22, 2022, from the Bureau of Fire Protection. The 4ID's own board of

inquiry, he said, will begin this week an investigation on the facility's soaking and cooling mechanism, which acts to prevent remaining unexploded ordnance to explode. Maj. Gen. Wilbur Mamawag, 4ID commander, said the BOI will be composed of Army officials and other civilian stakeholders. “We will also invite officials from Barangay Patag and representatives from the local government of Cagayan de Oro City,” Mamawag said, adding that the 4ID is expected to finish its report by July 17. Other than the BOI, personnel of the police's Scene of the Crime Operation and the Bureau

of Fire Protection are also conducting their own probes. From July 14 to 17, the Explosives and Ordnance Division team will conduct clearing operations and handle possible ordnance still present in the place of the incident.

Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner, the Philippine Army’s commanding general, said the 4ID incident should be a good reference for upgrading the various facilities inside Army headquarters nationwide. “We will transfer the ammo dumps into a safer place. There is already a stringent protocol and strict policies in place (for the management of ammo dump facilities),

Inter-Connectedness and Oneness of Life

KIM'S DREAM

Inter-connectedness of life is nature’s foremost principle as all life forms emanate from One Source of Life. We may be separated in form but we are more than form, we consciousness and when that consciousness prevails over unconsciousness, one can feel the oneness of all of God’s creation Such truism can be well understood if we read the holiest of books written by God Himself. The holiest of books is one not written by evangelists or well known prophets but authored by God Himself, evolving through billions of years, manifested in the all life forms in the universe, emanating from one Source of Life, the Great Consciousness. Neither it is written in words nor in any language and is opened 24 hours a day, has no literacy requirement and can be well understood using not one but five senses.

T h i s t r u i s m s h ou l d be foremost in the mind of a human being. Yes, as human, you have a form (body) but you are a being (consciousness) who is beyond form, that emanated from one Source of Life. With that mindfulness, we must understand that that holiest of books is said to be the manifestation of the Unseen, using the great void, the vast spaciousness as the pages and the four elements of the universe as the its alphabets, namely, fire, water, earth and wind. It is called the book of nature written through the ages that contains all the mysteries of life and the laws that must be obeyed irrespective of race, color, belief, gender and class. Our understanding of this truism will be a liberating force against the fallacies of life and of the fallacies of religions. I could not surmise then why my late grandmother would wake me up every early morning when I was a boy to accompany her to go to the Cathedral where she would kneel walking from the gate to the altar to worship God. She was that religious. She would reprimand me when I told her that these statutes and pictures that she was worshiping were just the imagination of the painter

Leonardo da Vinci and that the Unseen Supreme Force in the Universe is manifested through nature. Thus, we must listen to the cry of Mother Earth. Well, my beloved Grandmother had since leaped to the Great Beyond, now connected to the Ocean of Consciousness, the Unseen Being, the Source of all life. Yes, the 250 million stars in the cosmos can well speak of that element called fire that touches us through the glorious sun. Every time the sun proclaims a new day, that bursting of the light in the horizon shows that darkness can only be had in the absence of light and no way can the darkness defeat the light. In the same breath that truth always prevails over lies, righteousness over diabolic acts, love over hate, the just over the unjust, and life over death. But we also read in that book that even the darkness has some good in it as it shows us the stars. From the element called water we have learned that flowing is the essence of life as to stagnate means diseases, sorrows and death. For it to flow, it must seek a lowly path as it gains more power by falling down. In the 70s during the height of the First Quarter Storm, we always

heard the adage, “Let not a single drop of rain go out to the sea without serving the people.” There is also the cleansing and healing power of water. It has been said that sometimes the passions of the heart emit so much heat which only dies down through the cooling effing of water we drink. From the lowly earth grows the mighty tree and the beautiful flower. It may contain all that rot but even the wise, the powerful and the beautiful have to return to the eartyh as their final destiny. The message is resoundingly clear: man has to continuously move on to seek his destiny but only by being humble can he be exalted. Once he flaunts his arrogance in utter disregard to the book of nature, he dictates his own death sentence. He cannot continuously arrogate upon himself that false belief that he has been bestowed dominion over God’s creation. On the contrary, there is now the increasing consciousness of bio-equality, recognizing the right to life of all of God’s creation. Often disregarded, even the unseen wind has its own story to tell as its fundamental role is only recognized in its absence. How can one live LIFE/PAGE 11

If the sky is dark and it pours cats and dogs like yesterday and some days earlier, I try my very best to beat the blues. The taxi drivers tried to make detours, the flights were delayed or cancelled due bad weather conditions - yes, it seems the whole world is against us! I am pretty sure, each one of us experienced similar times. I was born on a Sunday a so-called "Sunday Child". There are sayings that those people will live a life of great success without problems, worries, and trials. Many years ago, someone told me, those born on Sunday are truly shining stars like the sun. They are never satisfied with anything ordinar y. They want to shine with a distinguished brilliance amidst other people. These are highly creative individuals who wish to place themselves in the first pale in every

domain of life Well, is that really so? I remember very difficult, problematic and questionable times in my life. A cheating taxi driver or cancelled flight have been just peanuts if I compare. In those difficult times I almost lost all my strength to get down to work on all problems. Life's path became narrow. Fears grew: it's enough. Really enough! I started becoming aw k w a r d a n d j e r k y. I struggled against almost everybody around me. I was reluctant to go against other's good ideas. I felt driven into a corner. People with indifference, arrogance and unqualified comments passed my way. Yes, also here in the Philippines... . Suddenly everything can become a problem and our voices bellow and our groans are getting louder and louder too.

B u t h e y, I l e a r n e d something. Admittedly groans can lighten our burden! For even a short moment only, I did feel how my inner life - and inside pressure eased off. A short moment only... Suddenly more trials and problems overwhelmed us and our families and friends: illnesses, death, bankruptcy, "war at the working place", efforts giving us a bad name, destroying the reputation, intrigues... . "You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me", (Psalm 23:5). Really? Amazing! We don't know about more and new spitefulness through my next "enemy on duty" in future. Actually I also don't want to know it, because negativism blocks life and its future plans. But I know Psalm 23. I read it, every time, if I am having a problem. Not if I meet again a detouring taxi

HAVE MY SAY

Yes, indeed! It always pays to be simple and humble. And the reason is because such qualities can only attract God to us. Take note of what Christ once said: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” (Mt 11,25) And St. James in his letter reiterates the same point: “God opposes the proud and shows favor to the humble.” (4,6) One of the beatitudes highlights the importance of

meekness: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Mt 5,5) We should do everything to keep ourselves in the loop of these virtues of simplicity, humility, meekness and the like. More than that, we should always find ways of how we can continually grow in them, given the fact that we tend to get contented at achieving a certain level of these virtues. We should not forget that since the world never stops evolving with all its good and bad forces, we also need to continue

developing these virtues to cope with the varying challenges being posed on us. Let’s remember that Christ said it clearly. “Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.” Christ, our “way, truth and life,” points to us the crucial qualities we ought to develop in this life that is so full of challenges, with the view of tackling them properly. It’s meekness and humility. They effectively resemble us with Christ. And with Christ in his meekness and

Marriage medicine (Pt.2) T h i n k a m i nu t e . . . Someone said: “Love is a fantasy that is cured by marriage.” But marriage is not the problem. It is people’s wrong understanding and expectation of marriage that is the problem. Yesterday we talked about the epidemic disease that is destroying many marriages. Today we will finish with another unhealthy condition, and then prescribe some medicine to heal and rebuild our relationship and life together. A third sign of sickness in marriage is a communication breakdown. As a comedian said: “My wife and I sleep in s eparate ro oms. We have dinner apart. We take separate holidays. We’re doing everything we can to keep our marriage together!” Many husbands and wives drift apart gradually over time—until finally they’re like two strangers sitting at the same table with nothing to talk about. They become “married singles” living separate lives under the same roof. Their daily attention to each other slowly fades away into their busyness and interest in other friends and

JHAN TIAFAU HURST fun. So what marriage medicines can help us with these different marriage illnesses? First, accept your wife or husband the way they are. Remember, everybody has some weaknesses— including you! “The wife who criticizes her husband’s faults needs to remember they may have kept him from getting a better wife.” You cannot pick and choose which parts of your spouse’s personality you will love and accept, and which parts you will not. Real love accepts your mate’s weaknesses and also admits your own. This includes “I’m sorry” when you are wrong. Second, never forget what MEDICINE/PAGE 11

PLDT's new 'Jupiter' cable system to boost PH int'l data capacity

T

HE new ‘Jupiter’ cable system is seen to boost the international data transfer capacity of the Philippines and is now the fastest cable system between the Philippines and the United States. In a statement on Tuesday, PLDT-Smart FVP and head of Enterprise Group Jojo

Gendrano said the new cable system “significantly advances” not only the companies’ digital infrastructure but the “overall digital readiness” of the country. “The Jupiter Cable system serves as an international highway for global data traffic to reach the Philippines. The Argentinian dinosaur By GRACE C. ABAN Master Teacher I Baliwagan National High School

FOSSILS found in Argentina of a ferocious dinosaur with a huge head covered in bumps and crests reminiscent of a gargoyle are providing insight into the evolution of some of Earth’s biggest predatory dinosaurs including a curious trend toward puny arms. Scientists said they discovered in northern Patagonia extensive skeletal remains of a previously unknown species called Meraxes gigas, including one of the most complete skulls of a large meat-eating dinosaur ever unearthed. Meraxes, which lived about 90 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, was roughly 36 to 39 feet long and weighed about 9,000 pounds. All meat-eating dinosaurs belonged to a bipedal assemblage

called theropods. Meraxes was a member of a theropod lineage called carcharodontosaurs that included the even larger gigantosaurus als o f rom Patagonia and carcharodontosaurus from Africa. The Meraxes skull measured more than four feet long, according to paleontologist Juan Ignacio Canale of the Argentine research agency CONICET at the Ernesto Bachmann Paleontological Museum, lead author of the study published in the journal Current Biology. “Many of the bones of the face and skull roof were covered with bumps, ridges and furrows, giving it a gnarly appearance like a medieval gargolyle,” said study co-author Pete Makovicky from the University of Minnesota.

Financial literacy of non-teaching personnel By MARIA WIVINA R. TANCOGO Administrative Officer I Tangub City National High School

AC QU I SI T ION of ne e d s and wants which includes sufficing financial obligations requires financial freedom. Financial freedom necessitates that financial resources are sufficiently enough to answer personal and family needs and emergent financial obligations. Some non-teaching personnel who are remunerated by the government is expected to have the monetary resources for the acquisition of needs and wants and for financial serving. The needs of nonteaching personnel can either be predetermined or undetermined which in effect requires the ready availability of financial resources. By being financially ready for any financial obligation, transactions or untoward events and emergencies constitute

the whole gamut of financial freedom. Financial freedom is seen as a function of financial resources’ availability. It means absence of restraint. It refers to the financial capability of a person in meeting his financial obligations. The fact that non-teaching personnel receive regular remuneration, financial benefits and can enjoy to the opportunity to source out monetary resources, it is assumed that they are able to freely acquire and enjoy with their day-to-day predetermined and undetermined needs and wants. Empirical data however revealed that non-teaching personnel receive a monthly net take home pay which is lower than the poverty threshold for a Filipino family of five members which is P7,890.

Why students don’t love reading By JENIE LOU DIEZ ALVIAR School Librarian Tangub City National High School

WHY don’t students read more? Digital distractions? No books at home? Too much testing? Kim Kardashian? It depends on the student. It depends on illiteracy vs. aliteracy. It depends on how you define reading. They haven’t found the right book or type of book. How do you feel when your principal drops a book in your lap – something wellintentioned but not even a little naturally interesting to you. Do you hate to read because you don’t want to read it? No one hates to read. Some of us are just pickier readers than others. They need general reading

strategies they can turn to from time to time. Market reading to them. Take pictures of them reading. Start a Caught Reading class Instagram feed or #caughtreading. Treat it with the same creativity and passion that marketing agencies successfully market Nike shoes as a lifestyle choice. They need specific reading strategies they can self-select based on context. Identify their strengths and areas for growth as a reader. Help them selfassess in the same way, then work together with them and their parents to create a set of four to six reading strategies for them to use flexibly depending on what they’re reading.

boost the country’s international capacity to the USA and Japan, further encourage the global trade of digital services, and as a result, propelling the country’s digital economy,” Gendrano said. Its new landing station in Daet, Camarines Norte was inaugurated Tuesday. The cable system is the latest of PLDT’s 16 international cables that route critical data traffic going in and out of the

country. The cable traverses the Pacific Ocean from North America going directly to Maruyama and Shima in Japan and to its new landing station in the Philippines. Once fully operational, Jupiter is seen to increase PLDT’s international capacity of 20 Terabits per second to about 60 Terabits per second. “PLDT’s growing investments in undersea fiber links reinforces

the company’s strong commitment to building data capacity and network resiliency to help fortify the digital competitiveness of the Philippines and serve the massive demand of hyperscalers,” he said. Jupiter, he said, is the first international submarine cable system in the Philippines to use an “open cable model” that allows PLDT to deliver hyperscale bandwidth “more quickly” to

enterprises across the world. “PLDT commits to boosting the hyperscale readiness of the country by investing in digital infrastructure that enables the digital adoption and automation of industries and businesses across all economic sectors, helping accelerate growth, demand, and consumption of digital services, ultimately helping uplift the quality of life of Filipinos,” he said. Digitalization improves gov't efficiency, boosts economy THE government's overall efficiency would get a boost with the digitalization of its processes, eventually reinvigorating the country’s economy, a Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) executive said Tuesday. Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu welcomed the proposed e-governance bill, a new attempt to pass

an earlier Senate bill on government digitalization that was stuck at the committee level in the 18th Congress. “We welcome the move towards digital tools and processes in government. This will help speed up transactions with government agencies, from getting necessary documents for school or employment to securing

business permits and registration,” Cu said. He said the measure, filed by Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, would help reinvigorate the economy and added that the Covid-19 pandemic made government digitalization an urgent need. “Digitalization offers convenience and ease of doing routine transactions. It saves time and effort

that would be spent in interminable queues which is very unproductive,” he said. He cited the report made by the Department of Finance on how the opening of electronic payment channels boosted collections for the Bureau of Internal Revenue at P2.07 trillion and the Bureau of Customs at IMPROVES/PAGE 9

Flexibility in Educational System JANICE E. RAMOS Teacher 1 Kibungsod National High School

The provision of educational options and the modification of courses to meet the requirements of individual students are examples of flexibility. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, school closures have affected kids around the world. Consequently, adjustments were made to class scheduling, course content, instructional technique, learning resources and location, technological application, and communication medium. Consequently, teachers must be adaptable enough to adopt this new standard educational system in order to meet the needs of their students. There are numerous ways I can introduce flexibility in my classroom as a teacher. For instance, if I find that my teaching activity is not effective, I will modify it, alter the tempo, or elaborate on it. In addition, when I receive criticism and comments from my head teacher regarding my instructional delivery, I will incorporate this feedback into my teaching tactics so that my students have the best possible learning experience in my teaching-learning process. Flexible learning was employed during the pandemic of Covid 19 virus. Schools have turned to online instruction and printed modules to assure students' continuation of education. During the epidemic, however, the quality of schooling was in crisis. Students were not attentive to their modules,

and the veracity of their responses is a significant issue. Consequently, our administrator has opted to extensively monitor our pupils via texting, calling, and social media use. The Facebook group discussion appeared to be a technique for monitoring the youngsters. Ad d i t i o n a l l y, e d u c at o r s ' professional development must continue. Therefore, authorities decided to provide teachers with virtual training and workshops. T h e a d m i n i s t r at i o n a n d monitoring of the educational system witnessed the rise of technology. As administrators and supervisors within the educational system, we immersed ourselves in the use of technology as an intrinsic component of the teachinglearning process. Moreover, modern technology is essential to the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of students' learning outcomes. As a teacher in the twenty-first century, I must accept the changes brought about by the epidemic and adopt the new teaching approach and learning mode to ensure that my students get a successful learning outcome. Flexibility is crucial in the educational system. It allows teachers to respond to the unique abilities and interests of their students. Effective instructors excel at being adaptable, which enables them to perform multiple tasks while allowing pupils to learn, smile, and feel appreciated.

focused. They want to learn in ways that are more interactive—both in class and in the tools they use to learn. To be impactful, teachers cannot teach the way teachers in 20 years ago and expect to keep them involved and engaged in their studies, because the students today do not learn the same way. Students love modern technologies, and it's easier to engage them in learning if the teacher use online learning techniques. Some key benefits of using technologies in teaching: interest students in the educational process; keep in touch with students; develop creative thinking; teach innovative things; and gain new learning experience. Students are becoming

digitally literate, and it affects their self-development. Most significantly now in the new normal teaching ang learning set-up, as a teacher, it is of significant thrust that I would be able to indulge with this technological savvy strategies and scheme. This lobby knows no age, that is why both the young and the old teachers must be updated. However, I see this as an opportunity to harness more my teaching skills, and that this is not a hindrance to just sit still and relax. For all you know, it is not an easy job as a teacher, it is not an easy profession. Yet, with all mighty and integrity, I vow to always do my best in every endeavor I will undertake.

“AIMING FOR RELEVANT LEARNING SPACES” :Competence Dedication Optimism By: VAICAR G. MAYAKE

“Education is the most powerful weapon that can change the world” by Nelson Mandela former African President, indeed, it is truly a great liberation in the history of humanity. It has been the goal and aspiration of the Upper Ti g n ap ol o an E l e m e nt ar y School to have relevant learning spaces for the children in order to deliver the quality basic education services as a whole. Thus, COVID 19 strikes all over the world and significantly shifted the emergent needs and prioritization of plans, programs, activities and projects of the government. The City Local School Board of Cagayan de Oro and Tignapoloan Barangay Council headed by Chairman Nancy L. Aban has been our constant partner in collaboration with School Governing Council (SGC) and School Parent – Teachers Association (SPTA) and with the approved innovation feasibility proposal by t he S cho ols D iv is i on Superintendent in pursuing the expansion of learning spaces for

the school to improve specific disciplines. However, it was not easy to immediately address the urgent need but a percentage of hope is a life blood. According to Rachel Ngom “Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader, they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role - always about the goal”. The department order no. 55 s. 2013 known as the guidelines on the Child – friendly learning environment wherein the learners shall inherit the program that aims to develop Filipino children for effective literacy skills, numeracy skills and attitudes which will contribute to life long learning skills. Eventually this initiative is a good start of the community to improve and revitalize its beginnings for the bright future of every school children. According to Victor Hugo a philanthropist, “initiative is doing the right thing without being told.” Hence, it is more definite to meet the goals when it is a product of scientific and innovative action.

DSWD-10 validates 4Ps beneficiaries

C

AGAYAN DE ORO CITY-Workers of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)10 continue to validate beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in northern Mindanao to determine whether more than 34,000 beneficiaries are still eligible for the program after 4Ps found out they were not enumerated in the Listahanan 3. 4Ps Regional Project Coordinator Kenneth Haze Sanchez Lustre said the activity complies with Section 5 of the Republic Act 11310 or the 4Ps Act that states, "DSWD shall select qualified household beneficiaries of 4Ps using a standardized targeting system," which is the Listahanan Program. Section 5 further states that DSWD shall conduct a regular validation of beneficiary targeting every three years.

"If we found out they are no longer eligible for the program, we will put them in the exit process," said Sanchez. Based on the approved transition plan, exiting beneficiaries will be formally turned over to the local government unit. Under Section 6 of the 4Ps Act, it provides that eligible 4Ps beneficiaries are those classified as poor and near-poor of the Listahanan program with members who are aged 0-18 years old or have members who are pregnant during the registration and are willing to comply with the conditions specified by the law. It further stated that those classified as poor and near-poor should be farmers, fisherfolks, homeless families, indigenous peoples, those in the informal sectors, and those in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, including those in areas without electricity.

first attracted you to each other. Make the time and effort to keep your romance alive with thoughtful, tender words, kindnesses, and special surprises. Say and do those things you know your mate appreciates—even if it is not your own favorite thing. That is what mature, adult love for your “other half ” is and does. A famous actress said sadly : “Marriage is the miracle that transforms the kiss from a pleasure to a duty.” But she is wrong! Marriage does not do that, husbands and wives do that when they do not choose to keep their love fresh and alive each day. Remember, our children deserve to have a father and mother who show them what a close, happy marriage looks like. Then they will know how to have and enjoy a happy marriage themselves when they grow up. Today, if your marriage could use some healing and help, sincerely ask the original Maker of marriage to take full charge and start changing your heart with His real love. Jesus will help you change day by day, so you and your spouse can begin enjoying the satisfying love and life together He planned for you. Just think a minute.

The b o ok of nature presents laws which are very easy to understand but have been violated all these years. It says that everything is inter-connected but have been violated all these years. When forests are denuded, silts which are carried by the rivers to the sea, destroying coralr3eefs which are the habitats of fish and other

marine life. This scenario gives credence to that saying that what evil deeds man does in the uplands are felt by those in the coastal communities. The worsening ecological disasters are the concrete evidence of why it has become imperative for us to now give high reverence to that book as indeed, there is no such thing as free meal in nature. Just reflect for a while on the laws of nature that we have wantonly violated and in effect, have mocked the book God Himself has written. Every page in that holy book has been torn and burned by Homo Sapiens with utter disregard to its sanctity as creation is a reflection of the Creator. Now, let us well understand that there is no free meal in nature, all boomerang to our own destruction in terms of ecological disasters and in our inability to sustain life on earth. Oh! Unseen Supreme Being, have mercy on us Homo Sapiens for desecrating the holiest of books. Now we feel the oneness of all of God’s creation which is indeed true love. In one voice, that love should now reverberate: WE LOVE YOU GAIA (Mother Earth).

C hr ist re assures us. “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” We should not worry too much about life’s vagaries. Precisely when we feel pressured and weighed down, he tells us, “Come to me…and I will give you rest.” Let us pay attention more to these words than to our human standards and estimation of things that will always consider these qualities as softness or meaningless passivity and defeatism, devoid of fighting spirit. In fact, these words require a lot of strength and forcefulness, for they have to be reconciled also with these words of Christ: “The Kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.” (Mt 11,13) In this regard, we have to learn how to master our emotions and passions. They are notorious in exploding in their own reckless ways when not disciplined by our reason and most especially by our faith, hope and charity. We need to train ourselves to feel at home with this divine indication that is meant for our redemption. We have to lose the fear of suffering. We have to assume the mind of

the sacrificial lamb whose life-offering actually gives all of us eternal life. All of this would require first of all the grace of God which God himself gives to us abundantly. But we have to learn to correspond to that grace as best that we could. We can start by reining in our emotions and passions, disciplining and purifying them so that they conform to the will and ways of God rather than to ours. We have to learn to welcome whatever suffering, trial or challenges would come our way, reacting to them in a supernatural way, viewing them from the angle of faith, and tackling them with the spiritual and supernatural means that are made available to us.

that the planting materials sometimes are not of good quality such that hindi tumutubo ng maayos (not growing properly). Learning

from that lesson, we really have to make sure that our planting materials are really of good quality,” he said. Good practices in the propagation of cacao seedlings must also be employed, he added. “This means, when we do more expansions, we have to make sure that the system of monitoring is also done. The system of quality control from seedlings up to production areas should also be enforced,” he said. He expressed optimism that the region would be able to double production of cacao in the next five years with a good system in place, particularly the protocols on farm practices and production. Muyco said the Philippine Cacao Industry Council is working on a book containing protocols on production that should be adopted by the cacao growers to increase not only the area planted to cacao but also the yield. He s a i d t h e g l o b a l demand for cacao is currently estimated at 5 million metric tons annually, and a shortage is expected in the next 10 years owing to the increasing demand worldwide. Under Republic Act 11547 of 2021, the entire Davao Region has been declared as the cacao capital and Davao City as the chocolate capital of the country. T h e l aw re c o g n i z e s “importance of cacao as a driver of rural development not only because of its singular potential as a raw material that can increase the country’s export earnings tremendously, and put the name of the country in the map for producing the finest chocolate beans, but for having provided livelihood to many small farmers in the countryside.” Out of the 15,000 metric tons of annual cacao production in the Philippines, Muyco s aid t he region’s share accounts for at least 12,000 MT. For her part, Charita Puentespina, founder of Puentespina Farms, said farmers can expand cacao through intercropping with coconut plantations. But she added that she believed the production has positively grown, only that current data do not reflect the correct annual growth. “We have

been trying to revive the industry since early 2000 and we’re trying our best to really come up with more production and more areas and still our figures are still in to that 12,000 metric tons since several years back. The very reason is that our efforts to come up with a very good monitoring of our products has not been in pace,” she said. She said farmers need assistance in terms of fertilizers and training to improve quality, particularly the fermentation and drying process. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)

Nasserudin Dunding was quoted as saying. Dunding said the BYC is committed to the Bangsamoro government’s call for moral governance, including the advocacy to end child labor. A Philippine Statistics Authority report has estimated child laborers aged 5 years to 17 years in the country at 2.1 million. As of 2020, BARMM ranks third in terms of child labor predicament with about 54,200 child laborers, compared to Northern Mindanao and Bicol region’s 78,400 and 55,100, respectively. MOLE-BARMM Minister Muslimin Sema defined child labor as work that deprives children of their childhood and their potential to have a bright future ahead of them. “We can be united in our campaign against child labor, and we can do a lot,” Sema said.

ILO Country Director Khalid Hassan said about 116 million boys and girls remain in child labor worldwide, with half of them engaged in hazardous work. “(Here in the BARMM}, with a collaborative effort to end child labor, we will achieve a child labor-free Bangsamoro region,” he said in a separate statement. The BYC and MOLE said they would urge the 80-member Bangsamoro Transition Authority, the BARMM’s provisional lawmaking body, to come up with more laws and systems that would promote and protect children’s rights in the region. BARMM Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim assured that the regional government would take the lead in the campaign against child labor. (PNA)
