Caraga mining production up THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) said the Caraga mining industry, which extracts much of the country’s nickel, posted growth of 8.93% by value in 2021 due to higher metal prices. Gross sales of Caraga shipments of mining products increased to P78.86 billion in 2021 from P72.39 billion a year earlier, the MGB said in a statement. “The increase of the mineral sales for 2021 was mainly due to the increase of metal prices in the world market. The nickel producing mines in the region have been consistent in gaining considerable earnings even in the previous years,” the MGB said.

M

ARAWI City -With significant changes now reflected in the progressing rehabilitation of the war-torn city, Mayor Majul Gandamra underscored that such symbolizes optimism to achieve recovery for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) here. During the launching of the inter-regional route operating in the Bangsamoro region Wednesday, February 23, Gandamra showcased the Rizal Park as part of the comprehensive restoration and reconstruction of the most affected area (MAA)

the government has been carrying out through the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) and its 56 implementing agencies after the siege more than four years ago. “This infrastructure is a manifestation of the commitment of the national government to provide the constituents of the city with various facilities that will help us stand on our feet again after having experienced the darkest moment of our lives,” he said. Gandamra stated that initiatives pursued under the restoration process will serve as a witness to

the rise of the people in Marawi from the ashes and bitterness of the past, and the painting of hope for a better tomorrow for everyone. Such was affirmed by TFBM Field Office Manager Asec. Felix Castro Jr. who also highlighted more of the rehabilitation effort like the Grand Padian Market and Sports Complex, among others. He stressed that the government is doing its best to beat its timeline with the monthly turnover of completed projects. Accordingly, additional infrastructures are seen to

be inaugurated during the visit of TFBM Chairperson Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario in March which include one integrated school building, Masjid

Macaorao, a traffic command center, and some barangay complexes. The TFBM assured that by June, the rehabilitation will be almost complete.

Now, the city welcomed another development with the operation of public transportation in the inter-regional routes SYMBOL/PAGE 7

SMC saves 27 billion liters of water in five years, boosts efforts to reduce water use by 50% by 2025 Importance of teachers’ physical activity during the pandemic By JAMES MICHAEL C. GABE Macabagla Elementary School

Teaching is a remarkably rewarding pursuit if one is able to enable and empower learners. However, it is also about being a confident and committed teacher with a sound balance of a healthy mind and a healthy body. Nowadays, the importance of physical and mental wellbeing of teachers and learners needs to be stressed more than ever. Education or any activity that involves an exchange of knowledge should involve a consistent focus on mental and physical wellness. Let us look at some of the crucial aspects that can guide us about focusing on the overall well-being of our teachers and learners. The COVID-19 pandemic has led teachers to an unpredictable scenario where the lockdown situation has accelerated the shift from traditional to online educational methods, and relationships have been altered by the avoidance of direct contact with the others, with implications for

their mental health. Physical activity seemed to be a factor that could prevent mental disorders such as anxiety or depression in this peculiar situation. Therefore, the aims of this study were to explore how teachers have been affected by the lockdown with respect to their mental health and their relationships in three main fields: work, family, and social relationships, and to know which is the role of physical activity in the mentioned variables. Te achers and st af f members are on the frontlines of daily school life. From creating lesson plans, to grading papers, to attending to learners' social-emotional needs, the caring adults in our classrooms are juggling immense workloads. The teaching profession can be equal parts rewarding and stressful. Thus, it should be of significance that we shall employ physical activities among ourselves so that we are always active and healthy in serving the learners.

MID pandemic disruptions, San Miguel Corporation is accelerating efforts to reduce its group-wide

water consumption by 50% by 2025 even as it reported saving a total of 27.4 billion liters of water to date since its water stewardship initiative "Water For All” was launched in 2017. “Water is a valuable resource not just for San Miguel, but for all of us. We have not stopped working on improving water use efficiency across all our businesses as we all continue to face water scarcity challenges,” SMC

President and CEO Ramon S. Ang said. Ang added that the 2021 reduction of 4.54 billion liters represented an 18.40% cut in the company’s water use against 2016 baseline, slightly better than the 18.09% it recorded in 2019, and significantly higher than the 13% reduction it registered in 2020. Savings, however, dropped in 2020 due largely to the

shutdown of most of the company's facilities amid the pandemic. Plant shutdowns and intermittent production are inefficient, resulting in more frequent startups and draining of water tanks in between, so more water is used as opposed to having the facilities continuously running. However, 2021 saw a return to pre-pandemic water savings with a slight improvement, as there WATER/PAGE 7

Staying positive amidst challenges during the pandemic By SHEENA MAY A. CABANILLA

Hard times always come. But there are things we can do to make them a little more bearable. Whether you see life as a roller coaster or a box of chocolates, we can all agree that while it has its beautiful moments, there are times when hope seems far away. It is during those challenging moments when we should be open to more opportunities for change and refinement. And yes, life can be very unpredictable. We run into obstacles in life that make it difficult to stay afloat. Whether it is the loss of

a loved one or financial problems, everyone has gone through hardships. It may be difficult to stay positive when there is a never-ending depressing news cycle in today’s society. In addition to that, the stress of daily tasks and work may make it challenging for one to stay hopeful. Thus, being happy is good for you and your brain. Happiness comes with many benefits that often go unrecognized. A few of the many benefits include better relationships with people, more focus and concentration, more

confidence, ability to combat stress more effectively, stronger immune system, overall healthier lifestyle, can help reduce pain, and increased life longevity. And a ls o let us b e reminded that having an understanding of your emotions and how you react to certain stressors is very important when trying to remain positive. The abi lity to pre dic t when you are becoming overwhelmed or anxious is the first step. By being aware of your emotions, you will be better able to

prevent certain emotions from heavily impacting your life and essentially, remaining positive. By learning how to manage stress and respond with a positive attitude to each challenge, you’ll grow as a person and start moving forward in life. In fact, without those setbacks, you could not have learned what you needed to know and developed the qualities of your character to where they are today. And yes, much of your ability to succeed comes from the way you deal with life and manage stress.

ORLAN R. RAVANERA All of the candidates are telling us that when elected, they will end corruption but are not telling us how. Don’t you know that corruption can never be stopped in a k i n d o f g o v e r n m e nt that is immersed in Bureaucratic Capitalism, w here e conomic p ower begets political power and vice versa? If is so full of nausea to know that money which could have been used to liberate our people from the shackle of poverty and hunger, has all these years allegedly pocketed by a cabal of vested interest as exemplified before by the Priority Development Assistance Program (PDAP) and the most recent, by the Pharmally deal. Funds by the billions which could have been used to make life b etter for the p o or have instead increased the wealth of those in power as exemplified before by PDA P i f t he name d legislators then had indeed plundered their respective pork barrels at the expense of those they have sworn to ser ve – the poor and

the vulnerable. Such g arg antu an a l l o c at i ons could have gone a long way in making life better for our people in a country that has been consigned all these years in dire poverty while all other countries in Asia have left us behind. Still, the stark realities of poverty prevail over the lives of 3 of 4 Filipinos in the rural areas where malnutrition is rampant. Pity the increasing number of pupils going to dilapidated classrooms without the benefit of books and educational materials. G ov e r n m e nt He a l t h Centers are without ade quate me dicine and the much-needed farm-tomarket roads remain the culprit why our farmers are under the merc y of t h e l o c a l c o mp r a d o r s , insufficient farming capital that ties up the farmers to the oppressive usury system and the alarming ecological disasters hanging like the “Sword of Damocles,” in a count r y t hat has lost its ecological integr ity. Indeed, the rural people are the number one victims of c l i m at e c h a n g e a n d the on-going protracted war. These are some of the problems which could have been addressed if only democracy has been used to advance the interest of the people and not of the privileged few who cannot moderate their greed. Outrageous! Like vultures feeding upon the flesh of the poor who are

prisoners of hunger and poverty all these years. Poverty dehumanizes as it strips a human person of his/her dignity. If the sacred act of regaining back the lost dignity has been trampled upon, replaced by diabolic and horrible greed, then such dastardly act should be a subject of our freedom of speech to decr y, or worthy of our freedom of spit upon their faces. Many I heard would opt for the second option as such outrageous misdeed oozes with nausea. Student activists during those golden days of the “First Quarter Storm” in the ‘70s had been condemning “Bureaucratic Capitalism” as one of the basic economic power to amass political p owe r and v i ce ve rs a; that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts a b s o l u t e l y. We l l , t h i s rhetorical statement might have been interpreted as very radical during those days but beyond the rhetoric lies some truism that has been concretized by the Napoles scandal or by the Pharmally deal, leaving us some lessons especially the political candidates to ponder. First is the question on what is a government for? Isn’t one to serve the people based on the dictum that reverberated during those days, “Let not a single drop of rain go out to the sea without ser ving the people.”? To m a k e s u r e t h a t

“Bureaucratic Capitalism” w i l l n ot ju st s e r ve t h e privileged few, i.e., cartels, monopolies, oligarchs and conglomerates, then t h e re mu st b e p e opl e’s participation in all phases of national life. This is because without people’s participation, all the outpourings of government programs and assistance w i l l ju s t b e p a l l i at ive s and cannot bring about the imperatives of social transformation and genuine pro-people development. People’s participation is the best guarantee of justice and sustainability. But people’s participation c an on ly b e ha d i f t he people are well informed an d c ons c i e nt i c i z e d to collectively advance their interest. Only then can we s ay t hat inde e d t he Philippines is a republican and democratic state and that “sovereignty resides with the people and a l l gove r n me nt p owe rs emanate from them.” Wa k e - u p a l l o f y o u prisoners of hunger and p ov e r t y. L e t n ot i c e b e served that resources are for everyone! Let us therefore harness our collective p ower and w it h a f ir m collective intent, transform a highly skewed societal order where corruption is rampant. Stand and claim our destiny because the people united, can never be defeated! It is only then can we really stop corruption feeding upon the flesh of the poor!

Made for love Think a minute...A medical school examined 260 different studies of young adults to learn what they essentially need in life to be healthy, happy human beings. After studying all the results, they renamed the entire study, Hardwired to Connect. Just like an electronic machine is wired to work only with the right connections, we humans must have the right connections of love with each other. From the moment we are born, we need love from other people. It is basic biology. The results of another study by Columbia University showed that a father’s love for his children, or lack of it, has a powerful and permanent impact on his kids for good or for bad. When a father did not have an involved, close relationship with his children, those kids were 68% more likely to get into trouble with drugs, alcohol, and violence. But when children did have a close, caring father, less than 6% of those kids were likely to get into trouble. Even though he is gone, Michael Jackson is still famous as the King of

Our globe and its population bear innumerable strange f a c t s . Fo l l ow i n g m a ny people's opinion, this world shows mostly worried characteristics and symptoms nowadays. No wonder. Just try to consume and digest today's headlines and news from all around the globe. It is a world with quickly bridged distances - our Mother earth is becoming smaller and smaller. Any tourist, even with little time and with only a small budget, can again travel to other faraway cultures after Covid-19 resitrictions. He may be a migrant, a restless hiker or the expatriate in our neighbourhood. The foreigner beside you and me can become a provocation or a challenge. Strangeness can become exoticism. Maybe that's why my family and I decided to move to the Philippines already in 1999. On the other hand - going abroad can open other and even better horizons. We must not feel as "a stranger in paradise". By the way, I never did since I have been touring around the globe many times. The Philippines has a very unique culture due to the influences of colonization and the sur rounding count r ies. Filipino people are ver y hardworking and strive to make life better for the next generation of their family. However, a migrant bears a juxtaposition of optimism

Fostering healthy multi-stakeholders engagement By JULIETA C. GABE Lubilan Integrated School

Stakeholder Engagement touches every aspect of school life and its presence, either through conscious application or as a happy consequence of good management, is a vital factor in ensuring that your school is capable of helping every individual pupil achieve their potential. It has never been more important than it is today. Your stakeholders are people who are affected by your school or who have an effect on you. They will include obvious groups such as those who make up your school community: parents, staff and critically - your pupils. It will also include your local community and perhaps the business

community. Moreover, stakeholder engagement is ess ential for s cho ol le aders confronting change and uncertainty. And yet there are better and worse ways for school leaders to engage stakeholders in their decision-making processes: It’s far too easy to neglect important groups, spend too much time with some groups and not enough with others, or fail to take into account how past decisions and community context may affect the perception of leadership decisions. Stakeholders may also be collective entities, such as organizations, initiatives, committees, media outlets,

and cultural institutions. They have a stake in the school and its learners, which means they have personal, professional, civic, financial interest or concern in the school. And yes, definitely, stakeholder engagement is considered vital to the success and improvement of a school. The involvement of the broader community of the school with it can improve communication and public understanding and allows for the incorporation of the perspectives, experiences and expertise of participating community members to improve reform proposals, strategies, or processes.

Modular Mathematics Learning by: KEVIN GIL C. MAHINO Teacher Dr. Gerardo Sabal Memorial National High School

It has been almost two years since the closure of the schools due to the COVID-19. The learning delivery shifted from face-to-face classes to different alternative ways. For those with available gadgets and strong internet connection, students attend to online classes. Others can learn more while watching and listening to TVand Radio-based instruction. In the hinterland, the most common learning delivery is through the printed modules. Mathematics learning is mostly viewed by students as difficult. This is even said before the time of pandemic. In the cancellation of the faceto-face classes, teacher’s onthe-spot support and students’ collaborative learning are now unavailable. Hence, students are facing more challenges while learning at home nowadays. Whatever the situation is, the teaching and learning processes should continue. Educational leaders, teachers, parents and other stakeholders are enjoined to ensure and support students’ learning in this new normal setup. With the teacher’s viewpoint, let me share some general tips for those who are learning through printed modular distance learning. First, read and follow the Home Learning Plan that is packaged together with your module booklet. The plan contains very important directions from your teacher on

what activities to answer and the expected outputs to pass. You can read the topic and the learning competencies to be developed. It also contains the ways on how to communicate with the subject teacher should you need more clarification. Second, read the math modules many times. Take note of the important terms and definitions in the discussion. Look at the examples very carefully. As you re-read the modules, the discussion would become clearer to you. Then, answer the activities that would serve as practice exercises before looking at the key answers found at the end part of your module. Spend more precious time with analytical reading. Third, perform the required activities and projects to be passed to the teacher. Remember, that you may not be required to answer all activities found in your modules. Some are there for practice purposes only. Usually, the teacher prepares a separate Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) for you to write on. You can write a draft of your solution and answers on your math notebook before transferring on the LAS. This is to keep your final work neat and clean. See to it also that you have followed the directions for making good projects. Lastly, ask help from the More Knowledgeable Ones

(MKOs). Acknowledge the possibility that there are people who are very supportive to make your learning successful. E ns u re t h at you h ave learned something from the mathematics topic. Remember that being able to explain the process of solving a problem is very much important. Your skills learned during the pandemic will surely make you a better student when schools are reopened soon. Military airstrike hits lair of DI terrorists in Lanao Sur Z AMBOANGA City – Military officials said Tuesday their troops are relentlessly pursuing members of the Dawlah Islamiya - Maute Group (DI-MG) in the periphery of Maguing, Lanao del Sur after the reported massing up of extremists in the area. The pursuit operation came after combat aircraft bombarded a lair of the Islamic State-inspired DI-MG

terrorists led by Abu Zacharia, in Barangay Ilalag of Maguing town at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Maj. Andrew Linao, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, disclosed that the combat aircraft unleashed a dozen bombs, sending the terrorists scampering in various directions as state ground forces

pursued them. “The offensive was launched after it was confirmed that Abu Zacharia’s group is massing up forces in Barangay Ilalag,” Linao said. The 103rd Infantry Brigade (103IBde), headed by Brig. Gen. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, said in a statement that the joint military and police law enforcement operation was against the DI-MG in the

hinterlands of Maguing. “Upon reaching on site of the target, close air support was given to protect troops from enemy anti-personnel mines. Troops are still in the area engaging the terrorists in running gun battles,” the 103IBde said in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday. It assured locals who were alarmed by the close air support early this morning that the

Teaching is a selfless profession. Although many of us find great satisfaction in our work, most educators would probably say they are driven by the desire to help and inspire learners. Too often, educators sacrifice their own well-being to support learners’ social, emotional, and academic needs. We have experienced this ourselves and seen it among educators we have supported. Because environmental wellness establishes the physical and mental foundation that grounds an educator’s work, administrators and systems must

create and maintain environments that minimize stress for teachers and students and support overall wellness. School districts and school administrators need an environmental climate policy that supports teachers’ environmental wellness by providing maintained and controlled climates, including lighting, temperature, cleanliness, and access to immediate room. More so, spiritual wellness allows educators to find their purpose and passion within the profession, enabling them to serve students equitably. Spiritual wellness is unique to each

were lesser lockdowns and facilities were able to run more efficiently. “From a water savings perspective, we seem to have recovered from the pandemic, but we’re st i l l ch a l l e nge d by l ow production volumes and continuing inefficiencies. The good thing is the majority of our businesses still showed improvement in 2021, particularly Nor t h e r n C e m e nt , S a n Miguel Foods, SMC Infrastructure and SMC G l o b a l Powe r. But this is not yet their former peak performance,” Ang said. To reduce drawing from scare water sources, SMC utilizes several methods, including the use of sea w ate r, w ate r re c ycl i ng , and rainwater harvesting, for cooling machines, cleaning, and other utility, non-product water usage. SMC has mandated that

all its newly-built facilities be fitted with rainwater collection systems. A number of older facilities are also being retro-fitted to increase rainwater harvesting and to replace leaking underground pipes with above-ground, easy to monitor installations. Given the disruptions and changes brought on by the pandemic these last two years, Ang said the company is continuously evaluating how it can best reach its 2025 goal. Apart from reducing its own use of water, the company has also become a champion for cleaning up major rivers and coastal areas and ridding them of solid waste pollution. Its P3-billion cleanup of the Tullahan-Tinajeros River system and the Pasig River, are unprecedented. Since June 2020, SMC has removed a total of 986, 641 metric tons of silt and solid wastes from both rivers, or 740,841 tons from the Tullahan River since June 2020, and 227,800 tons from the Pasig River since July 2021. The clean-up is seen as critical to alleviating flooding all over Metro Manila and paving the way towards improving water quality and biodiversity of both rivers, considered as the top plastic-emitting rivers responsible for the world’s ocean plastics.

Employing the culture of teamwork By BABY MAE C. PALAPAR

Cultures are created with the intention of solving probl e ms and m a k i ng life easier. Some cultures focus on taking control, and others on not taking control. Creating a culture of teamwork is about taking control and helping others gain cont rol. When it comes to team building, there are various opinions around the world today. S ome say that it is an indispensable means to achieve a more productive and successful company, while others think it is merely superfluous. It is important to note that teamwork is not about team building in the literal sense

but in the sense of creating a culture of teamwork. T h e r e ’s m o r e t o empowering people than just giving them more power. Empowering people also involves creating an environment where team members feel comfortable asking questions, expressing concerns, and sharing their ideas. This is something that is often overlooked but is so important. At the core, empowering team members involves treating each of them as individuals. Teamwork is a sense of unity. A diverse group of people each brings a variety of skills, experiences, and viewpoints to any group

or te am . T h i s v ar i e t y of dif ferent skills and experiences come together in cooperation between those who are working together on a common task to achieve similar goals. Teamwork is possible when the work blends each individual’s strengths to complement each other, while also bringing about a sense of camaraderie and shared vision among a group of people. Teamwork relies on these individuals to cooperate, using their viewpoints and experiences while also providing constructive feedback to work towards a common goal.
