Flat agri growth

GROWTH IN the Philippine agriculture sector is estimated to have been flat to lower in the second quarter in the absence of major events that may have dampened production. Roehlano M. Briones, a senior research fellow at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, said in a mobile phone interview with BusinessWorld that he is not aware of any largescale issues that affected the farm sector during the quarter. “I am not expecting much of a negative result. But neither do we see a very positive outlook for agriculture. I am seeing tempered growth for the sector,” Mr. Briones said.

Driver for growth T R A N S P O R T infrastructure is expected as the key driver for the Philippine construction sector growth, Fitch Solutions said Thursday. In a commentary, the research unit of the Fitch Group said the Philippine construction industry is expected to grow by 24.2 percent year-on-year this year, and by 16.1 percent in 2022. “We expect transport infrastructure, particularly rail and road development, to be the key driver of infrastructure and construction growth in the Philippines over the coming years,” it said.

HREE transmission projects in Mindanao have been stalled due to the continued threats of the global pandemic, the Department of Energy said.

Filinvest rolls out its vax programs for employees GOTIANUM-led Filinvest Development Corporation (FDC) has initiated its free employee vaccination program in Northern Mindanao and CARAGA on August 2427 at the power plant site of subsidiary FDC Misamis Power Corporation (FDC Misamis) in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. The Filinvest Vaccination Program (FilVax) aims to fully vaccinate around 15,000 employees within the Filinvest group all over the country, including drivers, messengers, utility workers, and security guards. "FilVax is the Filinvest conglomerate's effort to support the National Government's vaccination program as we continue working towards a COVID-free Philippines. DAVAO City – Department of Health (DOH)-Davao region has noted a clustering of cases of variants of concern of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including the dreaded Delta, among close contacts within the households. During a virtual press briefer via Zoom on Monday, Dr. Rachel Joy Pasion, head of the DOH-Davao’s Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit, told reporters that the clustering of mutated viruses

of SARS-CoV-2 was expected because they could spread the infection faster than the original virus. Pasion said majority of the variant cases reported in the region were still Beta but expressed concern that the genome sequencing results from University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center in Diliman are showing that the cases of the more infectious Delta are picking up gradually. Local 2 BARMM upland farmers urged to plant new crops Advertising and Editorial E-mail : businessweekmindanao@gmail.com Contact nos. : 0917-7121424 • 0947-8935776

OTABATO City – A lawmaker called on farmers in the upland areas of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Mindanao (BARMM) to try planting new crop varieties, including bananas, to improve their earnings amid the pandemic. Starting in Maguindanao province, Bangsamoro Transition Authority – BARMM Member of Parliament (MP) Suharto M. Ambolodto, in collaboration with the regional Bangsamoro Board of Investments (BBOI), said Thursday they have gathered over a dozen upland farming group leaders in the area to present new business opportunities to boost the farmers’ income. “This initiative aims to look for fair and inclusive investment opportunities to all farmers regardless of religion, groups, or tribes in the region,” Ambolodto said. He said farmer leaders, mostly from Teduray farming communities in

the tri-municipalities of South Upi, North Upi, and Datu Odin Sinsuat, all in Maguindanao, attended the forum held Wednesday here. BBOI Board of Governor Mohammad Pasigan said their targets this time are farmers residing in the uplands of the region, to guide them in finding markets for their crops. “We would also link them on the programs and services of both government and non-government agencies to decide on either to start-up their new farm investments or to level-up their routine farming crops to generate more income,” he said in a statement. Highland farmers in Maguindanao rely mainly on corn, upland rice, and vegetable plantations as well as fruit-bearing plants including durian, coffee, and coconuts. Meanwhile, Felino V. Samar, executive secretary of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs (MIPA), expressed gratitude to the conveners

for providing the forum for the highland farmers. In a separate statement, he encouraged the farmers to plant Cardava bananas aside for their routine crops in the farmlands. “Cardava banana might give us the opportunity to increase our farm yield and income since we learned that it is a lifetime investment with a low maintenance cost,” Samar said. Farming group leaders Manuel Lalison of Barangay Labungan, Datu Odin Sinsuat; and Guiamel Campong of North Upi, also encouraged their fellow farmers to avail of the opportunities to shift their current low-producing farmlands into promising technology of Cardava banana plantation. "We tilled our farmlands for so long now in our traditional ways of cropping but our income remains less progressive,” Lalison said. To address this, BBOI Chairman Ishak Mastura has reiterated their full cooperation with Ambolodto

as a partner in sharing the investment opportunities in the localities to meet regional economic growth and development. On August 21, the BBOI inked a memorandum of agreement (MOA) in the BARMM’s Special Geographic Area (SGA) in North Cotabato for the setting up of a model banana farm plantation in the area. Local investors who signed the MOA were Engr. Kaiser Usman of Usman Banana Plantation in Matanog, Maguindanao and Datu Jabib Guibar of Kabacan, North Cotabato. The SGA comprises 63 villages in six towns of North Cotabato that opted to join the fledgling BARMM during a two-part plebiscite held in January and February 2019. In April this year, the BBOI also approved the registration of the Al Muzafar Agriventure Inc. (AMAVI) that would pour in P950 million worth of investments in the region’s

CorporateWorld Del Monte Pacific: ‘less cyclical’ earnings ahead FRI-SAT|SEPTEMBER 3-4, 2021

DEL MONTE Pacific Ltd. (DMPL) expects less-cyclical results for future earnings as it implements strategies to improve sales and distribution. “Our US subsidiary had already implemented major restructuring and implemented asset light strategy (i.e. optimizing production footprint with plant closures) which led to one-off costs in prior years from fiscal year 20182020,” DMPL said in a stock

exchange disclosure on Friday. The listed company said it would further increase its sales of branded packaged products and fresh pineapples in the United States and Asia, along with the Philippines, through expanded distribution, renovation of key categories and brands, and entry into new categories such as frozen foods, snacks, and dairy. “We also have initiatives in place to protect and improve

the margins in fiscal year 2022 despite high inflation being experienced across major commodities. We expect earnings to be less cyclical going forward,” it added. On the planned initial public offering (IPO) of its subsidiary, Del Monte Philippines, Inc., DMPL said it is continuously watching and reviewing the market, together with its bankers. “The company will provide an update on the new timeline at such time when

IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON LEARNERS RODELIE P. MOTLOG- Teacher I

When COVID-19 broke out, everyone was worried about how things are going. Our learning institutions are among the severely affected sector when students are no longer allowed to attend classes in schools. The onset of modular learning and online classes set a new pace on learning approach. Many parents asked: Will students really learn something from this modality? While some believe and adopted the new learning scheme, there were few parents who are reluctant and thereby foregoing school for a moment, waiting for the situation to normalize. After a year of implementing the distant learning, was there really a proper learning attained by students so far? As a teacher, I may say that it is not totally the same as having face-to-face classes especially when it comes to kindergarten kids. Somehow, for higher level (high school and college) students manage to be resourceful in their own ways to battle the lessons. What they missed a lot

is the practical exposure on laboratory activities, field trips and other educational tour. However, for young minds as kindergarten pupils, a big difference can be distinguished. These kids are supposed to be managed by teachers during normal classes. But with the distant learning modality, most of them did not even see their teacher in person for the entire school year. Parents’ capability to teach the kids based on modular learning materials provided is totally different from teacher. Kids missed the opportunity to be independent for a while from their parents while supposed to enjoy with the company of classmates. The social aspect of child’s development is sacrificed. Learning is not ONLY reading and writing. School is part of the child’s personality development as whole. As a consequence, we would expect a less quality of education from this part of generation. This is the major collateral damage brought by this pandemic.

the company has assessed that market conditions are favorable for the resumption of the offering,” DMPL said. DMPL disclosed that there is no minimum period required to be observed before reviving the IPO, adding that the decision will be subject to market conditions, among other factors. “The financial statements and, consequently, the prospectus submitted to the regulators, will need to be audited and updated, respectively, and will entail review by the regulators. The IPO window is within

135 days from the end of the period covered by the audited financial statements,” DMPL said. Meanwhile, DMPL said it is checking options to redeem the $200 million A1 preference shares by April 2022. “Options include securing bridge loans or raising debt through bond issuance which will eventually be repaid

either through internally generated funds or the IPO proceeds when it is relaunched,” DMPL said. For the year ended April 2021, DMPL recorded a $63.3-million profit, a turnaround from the $81.4-million loss it incurred the previous year on the back of better sales mix and improved margins from lower sales of low-margin segments.

Kindergarten

By GRACE M. ARPAY Teacher I Balulang Elementary School

KINDERGARTEN is a preschool educational approach based on playing, singing and practical activities such as drawing and social interaction as part of the transition from home to school. Such institutions were originally made in the late 18th century in Bavaria and Alsace to serve children whose parents both worked outside home. The term was coined by the German Friedrich Frobel whose approach globally influenced early years education. Today, the term is used in many countries to describe a variety of educational institutions and learning spaces for children ranging from two to six years of age based on a variety of teaching methods. Here in the country, education officially starts

at the elementary level and placing children into early childhood education through kindergarten is optional. Early childhood education in the Philippines is classified into center-based programs such as barangay day care service, public and private preschools, kindergarten or schoolbased programs, church-based early childhood education programs initiated by NGOs or people’s organizations, workplace-related child care and education programs and home-based programs such as parent education and home visiting programs. Early childhood education was strengthened through the creation of the Early Childhood Care and Development Act of 2000.

Maid to sing Think a minute . . . Years ago many prejudiced white southerners in America t re at e d b l a c k , A f r i c a n Americans in cruel, evil ways. Yet there were some southern whites who were different. One of these was the Chisholm family in Laurel, Mississippi. Their housekeeper named Everlina had been with them for 45 years and was more than just an employee, she was part of the family. This included Everlina’s young niece who played with the Chisholm daughters. One day Everlina’s niece said that she dreamed of getting a good education and learning the social skills of a lady in society. So Mrs. Chisholm immediately took this little black girl under her wing, gently guiding her in proper social manners and confidence to face the world with dignity and self-respect. Mrs. Chisholm became like a second mother to this young girl, so she could learn that the color of her skin should never stop her from becoming all she wanted to be. During school vacations

ORLAN R. RAVANERA We are all embodied spirits, more spirit than body having been created in the image and likeness of God. This is a truism that must be the basis of our existence so that the development of the spirit must be the priority rather than be enslaved to the whims and caprices of the body. It is sad to note that the present development paradigm indulges so much on unbridled materialism and consumerism which does not only run counter to the essence of our very own spirituality but can be likened to the workings of an auto-immune disease syndrome (AIDS), where no less than the body’s defense mechanisms are attacking

vital organs. We decimate our forests, pollute our rivers and bays; we produce food yet contaminate our water table following costly agricultural technologies tied up to the heavy use of toxic chemicals; modern living adopting lifestyle that what makes of a throw-away-society – all done in the name of development. That kind of development can only be described as ruthless and futureless which has made the impossible now possible, which is the end of life on earth. Biodiversity embracing the billions of life forms has tremendously decreased as these life forms which have evolved on earth for billions of years are now extinct. As the earth warms and the oceans rise, we are now confronted on how to feed, clothe and house the exponentially growing earthlings that will reach the 9.3 billion mark in 2050. If our way of making a living is killing Mother Earth because it is just all about how to respond to bodily needs, that kind of minds et has tot a l ly disregarded man’s spirituality. In fact, the growth-at-all-

cost development strategy is rooted on the brutal, jungle-like philosophy of the “survival of the fittest”, “fittest” being the most aggressive, the strongest – all but physical qualities. This world is not just all physical. As embodied spirits, we must develop our spiritual qualities as these are what are the essentials when we will leap to the Great Beyond. In the world inside the womb of a mother, the fetus must develop the physical qualities as it is a sort of hell living on earth without senses or arms or feet. But the next life will not anymore be physical but spir itua l, t hus, we must develop what are the essentials in the spiritual world such as love, service, intellectual prowess, patience, kindness, honesty, integrity and all the God-like qualities that qualify us to end up in the loving embrace of God. How can you end up in God’s loving embrace if all you have developed on earth is the physical devoid of love. All material wealth will have no bearing in the spiritual world as signified

in the biblical lines, “what will profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffer the loss of his soul.” That kind of development that is just centered on materiality and consumerism must now be debunked. There is now the increasing call to replace it with one that is sustainable, holistic and community-based that puts the people at the center and at the mainstream of development processes. Hu m an d e vel opme nt must take precedence over materiality. The first principle of sustainable development is the full development of human potentials. The most pitiful sight on earth is to see a human being dying without developing his/her human potentials whose heart has not throbbed with that celestial fire called love. A human being has taken the form of a body but that is just form but his/her identity is beyond that as the identity of an ocean is not just a wave or a mere ripple but the depth of the sea. Let no one therefore should be so much attach with that identity, DEBUNKS/PAGE 7

In fact, she sang so well that Mrs. Chisholm, a trained mu s i c i an , i m m e d i at e ly recognized how naturally talented this little girl was. The girl had been listening to professional singers on the radio, dreaming of someday becoming a singer herself. Mrs. Chisholm dedicated herself to helping this young girl reach her potential. She even paid for the girl’s university education to study voice at the famous Julliard School in New York City. And the dream of that young SING/PAGE 7

IF we have to learn a precious lesson from that beautiful parable about the 10 virgins (cfr. Mt 25,1-13), it could very well be that we should always be prepared to meet our Lord who can call us to himself anytime, and be ready to settle accounts with him who has given so many blessings, talents, resources, etc. We have to realize that we need always to put ourselves in a state of preparedness which is mainly a matter of spiritual preparedness more than anything else. All other aspects of preparedness can only serve as a means or instrument for this ultimate state of spiritual preparedness that everyone should develop. Spiritual preparedness is what integrates everything else that also requires some preparation. It is what brings us over the inevitable things in this life and world to reach our final destination. Sad to say, hardly anyone talks about this. And if ever

it’s taken up, it most likely will be handled by a priest in a strictly religious environment or some weirdo who makes it a hobby to talk about the end of times. This should not be so. I feel that everyone should be not only aware of this necessity, but should also do whatever he can to help the others attain this state of spiritual preparedness. In short, everyone should take care of his spiritual preparedness and should do all to make this concern widely discussed. For this purpose, we should infuse ourselves with the deep sense of accountability. We should all have an abiding concern for accounting everything that we are and that we have. We just cannot go on with our life as if we are not answerable to anybody, especially to God, from whom we all come and to whom we all belong. This is an indispensable pa r t of our life, a n

unrelinquishable duty to perform. Our problem is that many still are ignorant of this duty, and of those who already know about this, the tendency is to take it for granted or to do it badly or to avoid it if given the chance. We need to find a way of instilling this duty in ever yone, sta r t ing w it h our own selves and then encouraging others to do the same, in the context of the families, schools, parishes, offices, etc. We a l w a y s h a v e t o remember t hat what we are and what we have are not self-generated but are always given to us one way or another, if not by someone or by some other institution and authority, then by God ultimately. Ye s , we a r e a l w ay s answerable to some people in varying ways and degrees. These people can be our parents, teachers, friends, neighbors, public officials, etc. In the end, we are all

ROY CIMAGALA answerable to God who has given us everything, starting with our life and all the endowments that go with our life. We need to smash the thought that what we are and what we have are just our own. That is a thinking that is completely false, that stands on no objective foundation. It needs to be corrected drastically and urgently. We have to learn how to be accountable to God and to others. One concrete way of doing that is by making CIMAGALA/PAGE 7

With this in mind, Globe joined hands to give educators, parents, and students access to highly engaging programs and affordable digital solutions so there will be no reason for learning to stop. To make the education stakeholders feel more optimistic for this school year, Globe has launched GoLearn, the unified, company-wide platform aimed at helping the country achieve 21st Century Learning.

Through the initiative, Globe is looking forward to creating a better tomorrow for the sector. GoLearn is a valuable platform for everyone who aspires to further enrich their education as it opens up doors for a brighter future. It promotes continuous learning and further bridges the digital gaps in the education landscape in the country via access to connectivity solutions, learning platforms, and solutions. “It is our commitment in Globe to work with the

whole education sector to bring forth everyone’s aspiration for better education, ensuring that learning never stops for all, wherever they are, regardless of their status.. This is the heart of GoLearn - Globe’s unified initiative to bring together products, programs, services, and solutions that will empower the whole learning ecosystem. .,” said KD Dizon, Globe Head of Small, Medium Business Group. Supporting Globe in this undertaking is

Sen. Joel “Tesdaman” Villanueva, Chairman of the Philippine Senate Labor, Employment, and Human Resources Development; and the Higher and Technical and Vocational Education Committees, and Digital Learning Advocate. A son of two former public school teachers, he is also a staunch advocate of continuous learning and has paved the way for accessible education for all. Villanueva mentioned a study conducted by

the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on possible learning loss due to school closure and remote learning. The impact on the kids may be long term which can affect their competitiveness and work performance in the near future. “We advocate digital learning and we partner with Globe for the fulfillment of this advocacy,” Villanueva said. “That's why importante ang mga ginagawa o gagawin pa nating mga

interventions para hindi tuluyang bumaba ang kaalaman ng mga kabataan. Makakatulong dito ng malaki ang initiative ng Globe to ensure na tuloy-tuloy ang learning ng mga bata. GoLearn is a digital solution to widen the access to training. With GoLearn, learning is at your fingertips kaya very convenient.” “Napakahirap po ng ating kinakaharap ngayon ngunit ito po ay magiging hindi gaano kahirap GOLEARN/PAGE 6

Scouting and The Scout Law: Foundation of Life Skills and Character Building EDWIN O. MAMBA

Scouting plays a vital role of a child’s development. It entices the wholistic growth of a child by developing its physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects. Character building, leadership skills, adventure, selfesteem and life skills are few things to develop in SCOUTING! It is indeed a great opportunity to be a scout. Thus, young boys must grab this chance to be part and explore the BSP life and be assured of a life-changing journey. There are 12 principles a Boy Scout lives by which is actually considered the Scout Law. "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." All leaders must have and live by a set of values. Trustworthy. A scout is honest, he tells the truth and keeps his promises. A scout will do whatever he says. He can’t be bribed. Loyal, a scout remains steadfast in his adherence to what is right. Being loyal is a character trait that can be often tested, and often misdirected. He is true to his family, friends, Scout leaders, school, and nation – He is faithful.

Helpful. A scout loves to help others without reservations and hesitations specially during difficult times. He is selfless in terms helping people and animals in need. He is a nature protector too! Friendly. A Scout is a friend to anyone. He won’t choose people to befriend, he offers friendship to people of all races and nations, respects them even if their beliefs and customs are different from his own. He is a brother to everyone. Courteous. A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age, position and gender. He is gentle and treats everyone with respect. He knows that using good manners makes it easier for people to get along. Obedient. He follows rules of his family, school, and troop cheerfully. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he sees unfairness of rules and laws, he will try tries to change them in an orderly manner rather than disobeying them. Cheerful. A Scout always sees the bright side of life. A happy good fellow and has positive outlook in everything he does. He is cheerful in doing tasks given to him. He

tries to make others happy. Thrifty. A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property. Brave. From the Scout Handbook - "A Scout is brave. A Scout can face danger although he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at him or threaten him." Clean. Being clean does not only mean practicing proper hygiene and one’s surrounding but clean in character. A scout is true to his words, heart and soul – he speaks no evil nor curse others. He is fair and just in his decision and does not play favorites. Reverent. A Scout is faithful in his religious beliefs. He acknowledges differences in faith and respect the beliefs of others. The Scout Law if learned by heart will prepare the scouts to become more independent and responsible citizens not just in their community and country but to the world! Indeed, Scouting is life!

girl who worked as a maid in Mississippi actually did come true. She became a famous opera singer known as the Queen of the Metropolitan Opera: Leontyne Price. Maybe you were not made to sing, but you were definitely made to succeed at what you do best in life. You were also made to help others discover what they do best. If you want to discover why you were born, simply ask your Creator to take full charge of your life. Jesus will daily guide and help you with His power to overcome whatever you face in order to reach your full potential He gave you. Just think a minute.

buried in so much attachment to things, to possession, to position of power or wealth, controlled by fear and desire. Those are just the content of one’s life but we are more than content. We are life, a consciousness that has been there even prior to taking that form called the body. That consciousness, that awareness should now be connected with that ocean of consciousness called the Supreme Being, the Unmanifested, the Formless, that one life that governs all life on earth and in the universe. Let us unfetter ourselves from that mindset of having more but instead of being more. Indeed, we are embodied spirits and that spirit must advance the oneness of life on earth, connected with the Supreme Force in the Universe, the Creator whose creation is now becoming extinct in a world now facing its 6th extinction. Now do you understand there is COVID-19 which is God’s wake-up call to a humanity in deep slumber?

quarantine, NGCP was constrained to suspend its construction projects to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations,” the DoE said in its 2020 Power Situation Report posted on its website this week. The MVIP, which has been certified by the DoE as an energy project of national significance, was initially scheduled for completion in December, but was set back by the pandemic, and also by damage to one of its fiber optic submarine cables. The DoE said that the MVIP’s completion date is now December 2022, according to the transmission

development plan submitted by the NGCP. In the same report, the DoE also said power capacity in 2020 grew by around 3% to 26,286 megawatts (MW), after two large coal-fired power plants started operating — Masinloc Unit 3 on Luzon and GNPower Kauswagan Unit 4 on Mindanao. “By the end of 2020, a total of 655 MW of installed capacity was added to the country’s power supply. The bulk of the capacity additions were supplied to the grid and equaled 643 MW, comprising coal (527 MW), solar (71 MW), oil-based (45 MW), and hydro (0.3 MW),” the DoE said. Last year, coal accounted for 56% of the gross power generated on Luzon. Natural gas and hydro made up 26.9% and 6.2%, respectively. “Over the past years, the power generation mix followed a similar trend, with coal and natural gas as the consistent top sources of energy in Luzon,” DoE said.

The FDC Misamis vaccination hub seeks to inoculate more than 600 workers and partners, catering to power plant personnel and those from One Oasis CDO, EastWest Bank, and TROO from the provinces of Bukidnon, Surigao del Norte, and Agusan del Norte. Through the help of the Rural Health Unit of the Municipality of Villanueva supported by its local chief executive, 50% of the target vaccinees got their first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on the first day of the vaccination rollout. "We are incredibly grateful for the LGU Villanueva for generously lending us time and resources for the vaccination rollout of our employees. We assure the LGU of Villanueva that we will continue to show our support and assistance in their development efforts, to the best of our ability, as we continue to navigate the effects of the pandemic together," said Juan Eugenio L. Roxas, President and CEO of FDC Misamis. The rollout is part of the 100,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine procured by the Filinvest Group for the whole conglomerate. The FilVax program is one of several efforts under the broader #FILFreeFILSafe campaign, a comprehensive set of initiatives to promote health and safety among its employees and stakeholders. The stringent implementation of protocols, along with many innovations in various processes, has allowed Filinvest's businesses to operate efficiently under the new normal, especially its power plant facility, which continuously meets the demands of customers by providing unimpeded access to electricity. During the program's launch, Roxas took the chance to express his gratitude to the men and women of FDC Misamis.
