inners of the first-ever Smart Prepaid ‘Live All Out’ Mobile Photography Contest were revealed earlier this month, in a simple awarding ceremony at Graphic All-In Store, Cagayan de Oro City. Organized by wireless services leader, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the competition encouraged Smart subscribers to capture moments during the Higalaay: Kagay-an Festival using their mobile phones. Photos were then uploaded to Facebook with hashtags #SmartKagayan, #SmartLiveAllOut and #HigalaayCdo. During the two-week contest period, close to 600 entries were submitted, as the Kagay-anons celebrated the feast of St. Augustine. What set them apart from the usual festival photographs was that entries for the photo contest focused more on their experience, and how they uniquely viewed their city, the “City of Golden Friendship”. By capturing photos with mobile phones, participants were able to tell more personal stories, as shown in their photo entries.
The winners
SECOND PLACER. Al Na’ir Moralde describes his photo as “Kids having fun and making themselves wet on the river side of Cagayan de Oro River”. Photo was shot using a Sony Xperia Z1.
Three judges, who are experts in photo-journalism and street photography, reviewed and rated the photos, and among the many entries, three photography enthusiasts emerged as winners. Awarded with a brand new Nokia Lumia 1020, Paola Michelle Pilapil of Hashtag Productions came out on top, with her photo of two lady vendors at the San Agustin Cathedral. The photo of the ladies, talking to each other and framed by numerous candles and religious items, was a consistent favorite among the judges. “Whenever I pass by the San Agustin Cathedral, I always buy candles. This image moved me because it tells a story of a Kagayanon’s hard work and spirituality,” says Paola, who has been a photo enthusiast since she was a little girl. Another photo of hers which was among the judges’ top 10 picks, juxtaposed two kinds of people in a fiesta – those excited to watch the festivities and those who slept through it. In second place, Al Na’ir Moralde,

a Development Communication student of Xavier University, won a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Camera. His photo of four kids having fun at the river-side was well-liked not only by the judges but also online. “I only had one chance to capture the action during the fiesta activities and that was during the fluvial parade. I’m glad my efforts paid off.”

TOP PHOTOS REVEALED. Top contestants of the Smart Live All Out Mobile Photography Contest, (from left) Kevin Gus Torlao, Noel Villa, Paola Pilapil, Al Moralde and Mecheel Casenas, are joined by judges Froilan Gallardo and Fourth Legara, with Judee Chaves of Smart.
Noel Villa, founder of the Cagayan De Oro Rugby Club, came in at third place. His photo titled “Mango Man” depicts a mango vendor hawking his mangoes on the streets of Cagayan de Oro. “I really liked this shot since the lines seemed to frame the mango man. I wanted to highlight him as the main subject, and not just as a side story,” says Villa. Aside from being a coach and fitness trainor, Villa is also an ambassador for the Hipstamatic Photography App. Winners of the best photo per category are: Paola Michelle Pilapil for the I ♥ CDO category, Noel Villa for the Kagay-anon Foodscapes category, Mecheel Casenas for the Higalaay Festival Experience category and

Through the contest and mobile photography seminars, participants learned to maximize the use of their mobile phone cameras. contest is very unique as it shows people that they can have good photos even using only a mobile phone,” says Pilapil. “My family and I had been going to the different festivals in the Philippines, and I joined this contest because it could become a venue to show others what our own city is all about,” Pilapil adds. The Smart Live All Out Mobile Photography Contest was organized to encourage mobile photography and support the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Office’s efforts to promote not just the Higalaay Festival, but the city as well.

Mariwasa, GMA Kapuso turnover newly-built classrooms in Yolanda-hit Guiuan town Guiuan, Eastern Samar – Mariwasa, the country’s leading tile maker, once again joins GMA Foundation Kapuso in the inauguration of several high school and elementary school classrooms in Brgy. Sulangan of the said typhoon-hit town. A total of five (5) rehabilitated classrooms and two (2) new classrooms were turned over in Sulangan National High School and six (6) restored classroom plus (2) new classrooms were also turned over in Sulangan Central Elementary School, all of which have a toilet inside the classroom where Mariwasa tiles were installed. The ceremony was attended by GMA Kapuso Foundation, INC. (GMAKF) executive vice president and chief operating officer Ms. Carmela “Mel” Tiangco, together with several school and municipality officials and representatives of Mariwasa Siam Ceramics, Inc. (MSC). In November last year, supertyphoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) devastated vast parts of the Visayas area which left tens of thousands of people severely affected. Guiuan, a coastal town situated at the southern tip of Samar island, bore the brunt of the typhoon as it was the place where Yolanda first made landfall. The storm completely levelled the whole town damaging houses and buildings and leaving more than a hundred people dead or missing. At the same month, MSC partnered with GMAKF and donated P1,000,000.00 worth of relief goods and in-kind products for rehabilitation use to help fellow Filipinos alleviate their suffering caused by the disaster. MSC and GMAKF are long time partners in uplifting the lives of our countrymen in need as part of the former’s corporate social responsibility and the latter’s mission and longstanding initiative as a socio-civic foundation.

EXCITED TO WRATH
re you angry today? Maybe, you are right now, while reading this column. You are angry, even if for others it's a beautiful weekend. You are angry? It's okay! We are all battling against one of the most powerful emotions known to man - anger! Anger. A day rarely goes by without us feeling angry. It is not necessary to cite examples, I think. Sometimes, it's just a minor thing or reason like we hate the fly on the wall. "Peanuts!" as my grandma always said. Sometimes, anger has indeed important reasons. That's why it is really important to talk about this phenomenon. What is anger, what does it do, and how does it affect our life? Where does it come from, and how can we learn to handle it in a constructive way? Only when the roots of our anger are exposed and explained, we can defuse its explosive and dangerous potentials. Yes, I am always angry sometimes. I am against my neighbor, because he keeps on burning plastic, rubber and other poisonous trash. I am against some politicians especially against those, who are mostly fool us with unbelievable promises and blue-eyed statements. Anger is hostile emotion that sets people against one another, or even against THEMSELVES! And, its nature, anger involves opposition, hostility, hatred, and dislike. Anger, however, is simpler to define than to identify. Emotions of antagonism can take a wide variety of faces.
Expressions of anger range from the overt, in-your-face brand of open hostility to the cold indifference of a silent individual. At times, anger can be felt like an inner fire. It hits you in the gut. You see red and fell hot and maybe sweaty. Your stomach gives you problems, your blood pressure rises, and your breathing rate increases. The silent withdrawal and lack of understanding and innumerable shortcomings of a partner are often an indication that one is angrily punishing the other for not doing things his or her way. Don't let the sun go down while you're still angry! A very known saying. So let's deal with our anger as soon as we become aware of it. We are all selfish - yes, me too! That's why we see cause of our anger as something outside of ourselves. External sources of anger - "Life is unfair" - "Life is difficult"! Try to handle your anger in a godly way. Try to find answers to the following questions: -What did I get angry about? -Where is my anger coming from? -Why do I feel so hurt that I couldn't control my temper any more? -Is my anger intense over something small? -Does someone provoke me to become angry? -Does my anger advance God's or other's interests - or my own? A blessed weekend to all of you hopefully free from anger!

TONKATSU LIKE NO OTHER!

WAIT TILL YOU TRY TONKATSU BY TERAZAWA
A
Photos by Glenn Palacio & Shaun Alejandrae Uy
serving of tasty, tender pork cutlets fried to perfection, served with pickled vegetables, shredded cabbage, miso soup and unlimited rice is an irresistible meal anytime of the day. And this delightful fare one can enjoy at Tonkatsu by Terazawa, the first Philippine franchise of the Japan-based chain brought to the country by the Bistro Group. The restaurant also has branches in Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. The dish, Tonkatsu, is showcased, as created by Japanese restaurateur and Chef Akinori Terazawa. WAIT TILL YOU TRY MY TONKATSU! A classic favorite in Japanese homes, tonkatsu eases itself into the hearts and tastebuds of many food lovers, be they Asian or Western. “Knowing this drove me to pick up the challenge of making the best Tonkatsu in town,” said Chef Terazawa. That was 20 years ago in Nagoya, Japan. Today, that dream has come to fruition with a successful restaurant chain which serves just that – the best tonkatsu in town, plus a wide array of other delectable Japanese fare. Chef Terezawa’s line, “Wait till you try my Tonkatsu,” is more than a teaser; it conveys a promise of a memorable dining experience at hand. The simplicity of a serving of Tonkatsu belies intricate preparations and methods of cooking required for a pork delicacy that is flavorful and richly textured. Chef Terazawa uses the traditional Japanese method of preparing this dish, incorporating aging the meat by wrapping it in white cloth for three days. This produces meat that is irresistibly flavorful and juicy. The pork is then seasoned and breaded using only Nama Panko which is composed of fresh and soft bread crumbs instead of flour or ordinary breading. This is another secret to cooking excellent Tonkatsu, enabling guests to fully enjoy the luscious tenderness and the juiciness of the pork with a softer yet crispy coating. The breaded cutlet is then deep fried to perfection using vegetable oil. Chef Terazawa also shares the perfect way to enjoy the dish: “Grind the sesame seeds straight onto the tonkatsu to bring out the aroma and flavor of the pork. Dip the tonkatsu in the house blended Tonkatsu sauce, with a pinch of Japanese salt for added taste. Include a good amount of the shredded cabbage in between bites to cleanse your palate.”
KATSU: DELECTABLE JAPANESE DELIGHTS Tonkatsu by Terazawa prides itself with serving katsu’s crowning glory, the Kurobuta Katsu. Kurobuta, dubbed the angus of pork, is meat from the original strains of Berkshire hogs from Japan. This method of raising produces hog meat that is of optimum quality and lush in flavor, with its own inherent and distinctive sweetness that can be perfectly paired with a variety of meat sauces. The restaurant’s Kurobuta Katsu is packed with juiciness and is rich in flavor from the meat’s excellent marbling. The restaurant further spoils guests by offering something even more extraordinary - Iberico Katsu that is made of the finest
black Iberico pork with a delicate, nutty, meaty, melt-in-your-mouth marbling. Popularly known as “Pata Negra,” these Iberian pigs are a special breed found in the south and southwest areas of Spain. They are an indigenous, free-roaming living link to the European wild boar. What makes them extraordinary is the fact that they are fed on barley and maize weeks after weaning. They are then allowed to forage on forest floors eating acorns, thyme, rosemary and mushrooms, making them the “healthiest pigs with 50% unsaturated fats like that of olive oil. It has been said that doctors in Spain refer to Black Iberico pigs as “walking olive trees” because of the hog’s diet.
Don’t you think it’s about time you tried Tonkatsu by Terazawa? Ten Little Indians’ Director’s Note
A
ll I knew was ‘One Little Two, Little Three, Little Indians…’ and the rest of course is a mystery I need to solve. But this was not the poem. The poem is something more than just the enumerated Indian boys. The poem’s rhyme rhythm from ten to none is a mystery one asks why such series of murder and who did it. So then I realize I too have to be in the poem to see how this poetic riddling effect sewn with flawless lining connecting life and death in mazes and puzzles. A point that realizes my conjectures that life is really a stream whether out of a prophetic consciousness or something plotted and created as planned by others or something claimed for the crimes you have committed and escaped – Ten Little Indians rhymed my deep reflection on how shall I pay my debts, how shall I face those who are not pleased, and how shall I answer the accusations despite the good deeds I extended to others. Now then I validate a certain careless principle that rings in my head that my actions, whether good or bad, affect others, and there will
always be people who will not be happy no matter how sincere I am to them. Ten Little Indians gives me a three dimensional view on justice. Justice doesn’t always appear the way we want it to be. Who holds justice, and who also seeks for it? Isn’t justice a lens or a vantage point that could somehow be defined in favor to those who view it in their own terms? Or is justice something singular in a sense that one will tell you that our world operates by the mores established or dictated? Maybe it is nice to consider how others appear to be self righteous whose corrupt deeds and lust for power and money are concealed by hierarchy that is expected to be honorable, dignified and revered. In my life, I have had received many unjust vexations, accusations, misconceptions – and I kept these all to myself for I know how justice seems to be ambivalent. And more often than not, wrong judgments and distrusts, as trivialized by those who are not pleased
by Hobart Savior
by me and my guts, have the proclivity in pinning me down. On one side I say where is justice when in fact I am telling the truth and I am doing the right thing; but on the other side, I am the injustice that caused disadvantage to others. Then where is my vantage point in a consciousness called justice? My answer is I remain honest and true, like one adage would complete to say, even others will not be… I was asked, ‘so was it you Hobart who chose your season?’ My answer is yes of course! I wish to show the world the ordered chaos of justice so we learn what it really means in this hopeful world. Theatre is just for it gives you the option to like it or embrace it or dispense it. It is my purpose together with The Xavier Stage to show the plural faces of justice which we conventionally consider, as always, singular… Catch The Xavier Stage’s Ten Little Indians until September 30, 2014 at the XU Little Theater. La Salle University Teatro Guindegan performs at 2014 SIPA Festival in Indonesia The Teatro Guindegan, resident theater company of La Salle University – Ozamiz, represented the Philippines to the 2014 Solo International Performing Arts (SIPA) Festival which was held in Benteng Vastenburg Solo, Indonesia last September 11-13, 2014. The group performed Hugis, an experimental production that tackles themes on the origins of life and communities, of selecting personal identities, of ownership claims resulting to conflict and misunderstanding leading to the destruction of their life support system – the Environment. Fusing Asian movements, the production was a stylization of traditional Asian arts forms to tell stories of life, conflict and hope in contemporary performance. Conceived and directed by Felimon
Blanco, Hugis was performed by an allmale ensemble composed of Ted Nudgent Tac-an, Michael Angelo Plaza, Chrey Miekko Mutia, Artchie Linganay, Renz Clifford Do and Paul Adrian Manlangit. Ric Orcino provided technical direction. Production and tour management were supervised by Dr. Calixta Colarte, Chiedel Joan San Diego and Elma Gula. In behalf of Ambassador Maria Rosario Aguinaldo of Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, Consul Shirlene Mananquil and Attache Remee Alcazar came to support the group during the festival. After the festival performance, Deputy Ambassador Roberto Manalo hosted dinner for the Philippine delegates in Jakarta, Indonesia. On its 6th year, SIPA 2014 had the theme “Generation of World Cultures”.
The festival is jointly organized by Kementerian Pariwisata Dan Ekonomi Kreatif, Kementerian Pemuda Dan Olahraga, Pemerintah Kota Surakarta, SIPA Community and Semarak CandrakiranaFoundation. International performing arts groups that participated in the festival came were Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Korea, Indonesia-USA and Germany. In 2012 SIPA Festival, the NCCA supported a collaborative production of Teatro Bol-anon with Visayas and Mindanao artists. NCCA Chairman Prof. Felipe M. de Leon headed the delegation in 2012. Off the Beaten Track in the Sand Dunes of
Paoay, Ilocos Norte
I
t was nearing dusk when we arrived at the famous sand dunes of Paoay, Ilocos Norte during a recent familiarization tour of the province for Cagayan de Oro and Cebu based journalists. It had been a pretty exhausting morning after traveling to the iconic windmills of Bangui, trekking under the scorching Ilokano sun at the famous white rock formation of Kapurpurawan, slogging uphill the steep stone staircase of Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, then more trekking through the REFMAD Dragon Fruit Farm where we had a brief respite for lunch. Then it was off again for the Bacarra Museum, and thence to Laoag City for the Museo Iloko, Bell Tower, Tobacco Monopoly monolith, and the provincial capitol. After a brief snack at the thankfully cool
Johnny Moon Café, we were off for the famous Paoay sand dunes just a few minutes ride from the Plaza del Norte where we were billeted during our stay. But this isn’t about this magnificent desert in the middle of nowhere, site of many movie shoots like Ang Panday, Himala, Born on the Fourth of July, Mad Max, to mention a few. A mysterious 88-kilometer sand formation at the border of Paoay, it is the only such formation in South East Asia. What our hosts from the provincial government communications and media office headed by photographer Alaric Yanos brought us here were for its famous sand sports like the 4X4 dune bashing and sand boarding. Having personally experienced 4X4 off-road racing with friends from the
4X4 Fun Club back home, I wasn’t especially raring to take the ride in my tired state. Fortunately, it turned out later, our hosts indeed had something special for our group whose travel and accommodation were facilitated by Cebu Pacific Air and JG Summit Holdings. Our group of five lady journalists from Cebu was aboard a Jeep Wrangler whose yellow trim was reminiscent of the Transformers’ Optimus Prime while Orwin Austria, my fellow journalist from Cagayan de Oro, and our hosts from CEB and JG Summit, Precious Heradura and Len Borja, clambered aboard a blue Toyota FJ- 40 Land Cruiser. We weren’t’ on the trail long before we heard the screams of our fellow journalists from Cebu splitting the air just ahead of us as the off-road vehicles seemingly

dipped and dropped straight down then straight up before corkscrewing around the bends of trails at an angle which seemed to many of us would surely end up with our jeeps tumbling off the trails head over heels. But no such thing happened, of course. And our drivers laughingly assured us they have not had an accident ever since the 4X4 dune bashing was initiated in by the present vice mayor Jessie Galano two years ago. However exciting dune bashing and sand boarding were for us personally, I still believe Paoay could attract even more tourists to adventure sports in the sand dunes with a little more safety precautions. For those familiar with the

famous white water rafting of Cagayan de Oro, you have experienced how the outfitters are extra careful about the safety of their guests, providing them with a pre-departure orientation on safety precautions to take and instructions to observe, safety equipment like the mandatory life vests and helmets, and first aid stations and ambulances just in case. As our brief ride on the dunes showed us, it’s not for everyone and people with health concerns should be made aware of the risks they are about to take. An orientation on how to deal with the sudden vertical drops and rises would also be useful, and tips on how to properly hold on the roll bars without getting bruised and battered as some of our lady riders were, I believe be appreciated by those yet to ride. guards would be nice. All told, however, the sand sports in the sand dunes of Paoay remains high in the bucket list of those wanting to experience Ilocos Norte. But increased awareness of the risks and how to deal with them would surely be welcomed by those about to ride.
