A Different Sort of Petting Zoo:

Up Close and Personal with the Tigers of Phuket

P

etting zoos originated in the London Zoo in 1938 when it opened a special “children’s zoo” which allowed kids to feed and touch domesticated animals. This was ostensibly to give city kids an idea of what farm animals were like first-hand thus, usually featured sheep, goats, ponies, guinea pigs, pigs or rabbits that were generally safe to feed and interact with. This, in contrast to the regular zoos which usually featured wild animals within enclosures who were safely viewed from afar. On the ultimate day of our 3-day familiarization tour of Phuket, Thailand, our hosts from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (T.A.T.) Singapore office prepared a special treat for our group of 12 journalists from the Visayas and Mindanao who were here to promote the island as another option for Filipino tourists planning to visit Bangkok, which recently surpassed Paris as the world’s most visited tourist destination. Cebu Pacific has a direct flight to Phuket every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Just a short ride from our hotel Novotel Phuket Vintage Park, the Tiger Kingdom at Kathu features 30 tigers of various sizes from cubs barely 2-4 months old to full-grown adults 1636 months of age. You can imagine everyone’s eyes getting big as saucers and mouths going agape when we realized this was a totally different sort of petting zoo where kids and adults alike interact with real live, carnivorous tigers!

The Chief Tiger Trainer assured us that all of the cats big and small were raised from domesticated tigers from Chiang Mai (where another similar Tiger Kingdom is located). The website says the trainers employ a combination of repetition, trust and encouragement to acclimatize the big cats to the presence of humans that they become used to being the presence and touch of people over time. Contrary to a common perception to visitors and to those viewing photos of visitors interacting with the big cats online, they are neither drugged nor tranquilized. “Tigers are by nature nocturnal animals so they usually rest and sleep by day,” the Chief Tiger Trainer assured us. However, all visitors are still advised to take precautions when interacting with the big cats in the interest of safety, like approaching them from the rear, and not touching their faces and front paws. Like anyone was brave enough to try anything funny! Since we were rather pressed for time, our gracious hosts opted to allow us to interact with the smallest of cubs followed by the biggest of cats. Also, rather than the bigger enclosures where the big cats could run freely, they chose to have us interact with the sleeping cats in their enclosed cages with the trainers always present to guide and protect us, just in case!

T

he Xavier Stage (TXS), the repertory theatre company of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, presented its pre-Islamic Maranao version of William Shakespeare’s creation, A Midsummer Night’s Dream which Premiered, September 21 at the XU Little Theatre. The play was directed by Hobart P. Savior of Xavier Center for Culture and Arts. He said that the play intends to bring modern audiences back to the classics with its deeper truths which William Shakespeare had captured in his tragedies and comedies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is considered as the most popular comedy written by Shakespeare. It was written in the middle of 1594 to 1595. Taking place in a mythical place and an enchanted forest, it portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. The story evolves in melodramatic and comedy form, bringing out an unusual story of love and magic. This artistic show is a new engagement of TXS towards artistic form to make theatre an expression and a philosophy of life for its audience. Originally, this play contains Greek settings and TXS presented it in a pre-Islamic Maranao sort through the adaptation from the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble of Mindanao State University - Marawi. According to Savior, the play combines the local lure among the Maranaos and the masterful plot of Shakespeare which made the play exciting. It is a combination of presentational theatre art form, movement, lofty Cebuano language, music and sensitivity culture making A Midsummer Night’s Dream an ambitious work and an accomplishment of a young theatre company whose identity and art form are continuously challenged. He also said that mounting A Midsummer Night’s Dream entailed careful handling of both the Shakespearean material and the Maranao culture and folklore in its ancient times. A thorough study on content and form was employed to deconstruct the text and a meticulous semiological dramaturgy was thought of and applied to come up with an adequate performance text rendered by TXS. Thus, layers of elements, thought processes, significant details and truths are considered so to simplify the complex experience that the material inherently processes. The cast comprised 22 persons, who are students, faculty, staff and alumni of Xavier University. The Xavier Stage mounting of A Midsummer Night’s Dream adaptation is part of the group’s “Realizing Shakespeare” series which comprise the TXS’ 3rd Theatre Season productions. TXS will also be presenting adaptations of “Titus Andronicus” (December) and “Hamlet” (February 2014) by Layeta Bucoy.

Swiss Film to Open Cine Europa 16 at Rodelsa Hall I n the latest edition of Cine Europa here in Cagayan de Oro, a critically-acclaimed Swiss film will pave the way for the four-day film festival at Liceo U’s Rodelsa Hall. “Operation Libertad” by filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff tells a fictional story about the destiny of young Swiss revolutionaries in the late 1970’s. This film caught the attention of international critics and has landed a spot as one of the featured films in the Director’s Fortnight at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in France. As stated in www.swissinfo. ch, the film revolves around a revolutionary group that tries

to uncover a 1970’s money laundering operation by a South American dictator in a Swiss bank. This mock documentary has received favorable reviews from film buffs and movie critics. Gracing the official opening of the 16th Cine Europa in Cagayan de Oro is no less than the Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines Ambassador Guy Ledoux. Other dignitaries from the EU member countries are also expected to grace the Cagayan de Oro leg. This is the fifth year in a row that the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines partners with

Liceo de Cagayan University in showcasing award-winning films from Europe. Aside from Switzerland’s entry to the festival, 20 other films from 16 countries will be screened for free at the Rodelsa Hall from October 10 until October 13. The festival will then visit Davao City on October 15-20. Liceo U’s Next Moves Concert a Hit

T

hey owned the stage not just for one day but for two more days. Next Moves, Liceo U’s premiere dance company wowed the audiences at the Rodelsa Hall with their first venture into a full-length dance concert. Their special presentation attracted mixed audiences from young students to professionals and all came out mesmerized and in awe of the dance company’s talents and powerful skills. Gripping modern pieces such as their take on the Napoles scam and the Sendong catastrophe plus their classic dance repertoire took the audiences to a different high. Young girls failed to contain their giggles and shrieks as the performers took a different beat during the hip-hop segment. And when it came to the love dance suites, the audience went totally wild. Such hysteria is rare in a venue like Rodelsa Hall and only the energy and charm of Next Moves can illicit such. Their graceful and unparalleled movements and distinct brand of storytelling made them one of the most prolific and recognized dance crews in Cagayan de Oro City and a group to reckon with in regional and national competitions. They have represented Liceo de Cagayan and the City in various dance tilts in Mindanao and in Manila. They emerged as the North Mindanao Champion and recently landed in the top 6 best dance crews all over the country in Smart’s Jump-In Dance Off at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Composed of 39 talented young Liceans, the group shared the stage with guest artists such as Ms. Karissa Falcon, (a Ballerina and Miss CdeO 2013 Best in Talent), Next Moves Alumni Rey Gutierrez and Ronald Danas, Folkloric Dance Troupe Choreographer Richard Pia, Marky Dee and Lyan Tubella of the Liceo Pep Squad, guitarist Rafael Oviedo of the Liceo College of Music as well as two of the most active dance groups Power Ninetees and Footprints. Next Moves is under the artistic direction of multiawarded dance maven Roger Odron. He is also the head of Liceo Folkloric dance Troupe and the Liceo Titans All-Stars Pep Squad.

WORDS & NOTES

by Owen Jaen

by DEBBIE CABAGUE

Of “Stolen” Shots and Copycats

T

he recent shame that was brought about by the controversy involving the UP student Mark Joseph Solis is indeed a wake-up call for everyone. He stole a photo and passed it off as his own and won. Worse, he submitted it to an event organized by a foreign embassy. As of this posting though, there were reports that he returned the competition prizes and was then asked by the organizers to take part of their humanitarian projects they are organizing so he can redeem himself. So what lessons do we get from this controversy? 1. Make your own mark, never steal. Always have the courage to create your own work no matter how crappy others may see it as long as it is created with sincerity. To practice your craft and continue to hone your skills in any way you can makes you better. Do not mind criticism, they are there to help you improve and not to pull you down. Never dare to take the easier path and lift other people’s works and brand it as your very own, one day someone will squeal and the reputation you wanted to hungrily achieve will go down the drain. 2. Acknowledge the work of others. If you admire other people’s creativity, praise them. If you get jealous of what they are doing, try it on your own and not copy and paste what they have done. See if you can come up with something better than what they have or at least at par, this way you can truly measure your own creativity. Make them as your inspirations to be a better version of yourself. When you become somebody someday, you will not be ashamed of who you have become and what you have done and you can even cite these people as your motivations for greatness.

3. Blind ambition is dangerous. To aim for the stars and even the entire galaxy is always alright as long as you know how to get there and you get there right. When we become obsessed with achievements, praises and the limelight, we become blinded and we risk everything just to maintain what we always longed for. Popularity, fame and power can be tricky and it can make a fool out of even the brightest of men. 4. Accept rejection and never allow others to take control of your life. Do not feed on their praises and their cheers because this will make you dependent on their acceptance and once you feel you failed to gain their nod you feel less worthy and useless. Rejections are part of life and when we push ourselves too far to the point of committing shameful acts, we will fall harder than we ought to be. 5. It is okay to be you, be original. All of us want to belong but once we blend in we want to stand out. If we ache for attention and acceptance, the best thing to do is to let people see what you really have not what you pretend to have. Pretending to be someone we are not is hard to maintain and we will eventually crumble from our own illusion. Always be yourself in whatever you do and people will love you for real. The case of Mark Solis is just one of the many incidents of stealing creative works. With the advent of digital media it is now very easy to “cut” and “paste” other people’s works. Plagiarism is a serious matter because it is stealing intellectual property. Any artistic and creative pursuit must be protected and respected for they are fruits of labor. May we all instill this in our consciousness to uphold what is right and so that greed and injustice will not thrive.

Finding Your Path J

ust few days ago, I and my best friend were privileged enough to have a photo shoot with one of Cdeo’s top photographers and make-up artist. Yes it was fun and relaxing because we were able to talk a lot and goof around. These guys are not new to me. I’ve known them even before they have become famous in this city. Glad to say they are still the same people whom I used to know but on the other side are also much better as they have found their paths in life. All of us were musicians together at one point in our journeys but I guess music is my calling while theirs is photography and make up. Common ground - artistry, passion in what we do and the individual gifts that God wired each of us to inspire others as well. When we get together we always like to look back where we were before and talk about our journeys. Observing them closely while doing their craft, made me realize, that we have grown so much better. What’s funny is each of us did a lot of “tryouts” before we focused on what we do now and I can definitely agree that experience is the best teacher. Finding our individual paths was not easy because there were a lot of times that we allowed people to dictate on us which way to pursue but perhaps our strong desires for our gifting still came out on top. As I listened to our conversation

I observed that what really made us endure the hardships was love in what we do. Even with sleepless nights just to finish work it still made us happy because we are also satisfied as we know that we’ve done our best. What keeps us on the ground is the reality that it is because God placed us where we are now, we have nothing to boast in our own for without His favor it could have been the other way around. When people try to pull us down we shake it off and move forward because we can never please everyone. Doing our best sometimes means do not compromise especially when integrity is at stake. It’s not just in politics that people play the” dirty game” but I guess in every industry because it is a personal character issue, when someone plays dirty in “little things” then how much more in big endeavours. Our stand is to be good examples for the next generation. It is hard to travel in the narrow road but if it can make a difference even for some, then it’s worth it. I agree with my photographer friend that there are so many role models out there that can serve as an inspiration but then again, there will always be those people who have come and faced great obstacles and came on top. No matter the obstacles, their life and work is a living testimony of God's plan that He will never leave us or forsake us.

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

What Is Life Without A Voice

T

he larynx or what lay person’s know as voice box is one important part of the body. Although, we know that our deaf and mute friends use hand signals in order to have themselves understood, for one who is used to talking, to even temporarily lose one’s ability to speak can be quite of a frightening experience. Add to it, if one’s career depends in his/ her ability to speak! Inflammation of the voice box or larynx, or what is medically known as Laryngitis , can affect anyone. Although, it usually is short term in nature, it can be prolonged. If the inflammation lasts for more than two weeks, then, it may be a chronic problem that needs to be addressed immediately. Short term laryngitis is usually caused by a viral infection, like if one were having colds or upper respiratory infection. Whereas for chronic cases, the habitual over use of the voice like the singers, the vocalists, cheer leaders, is the most common cause. Being exposed to allergens, with smoke (either as first hand or second hand), chemical fumes (for those in the industry that

handles pesticides, formalin or kerosene, can trigger a case of laryngitis. Other common causes include excessive alcohol use, and acid reflux (GERD- back flow of acid). Polyps, or growths in the voice box, sometimes called as singer’s nodules, and even tumors like the Big C of the thyroid gland, and the larynx itself, can present as laryngitis. Whether acute or chronic, and regardless of the cause, mostly, patients will complain of hoarseness or a tickling sensation of the throat. Others would feel that their throats are dry, sore and have a dry cough. Something to think about: whispering and habitual clearing of the throat can actually trigger hoarseness or loss of voice sounds in the

long run! A visit to an Otolaryngologist or an Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist (ENT), is wise decision. A tiny mirror and light is used in order to view the back of the throat (laryngoscopy)and sometimes a sample is taken for biopsy. Resting one’s voice is good practice. Other simple but helpful tips that can help if one were to develop or experience hoarseness or sore throat include but not limited to, taking in plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, and avoiding the unnecessary use of decongestants as these further stimulate dryness of the throat. A practice that we may forget and yet, time and time again, our forefathers have used to treat most throat ailments is the use of rock salt in a glass of lukewarm water as mouth gurgle is effective in preventing as well as aid in clearing the throat. Staying away from smoking and alcoholic beverages are also important habits that can protect one’s voice and over -all health. Though silence is also beautiful, the ability to speak and be heard is a gift that can benefit self and others...

How Far Would You Go to Win?

T

hese past few days, the internet is abuzz with scrutiny over a plagiarized winning photo. Brandishing virtual pitchforks and torches and chanting a slew of insults, the angry mob of netizens directed its wrath on the hapless recipient, a UP student named Mark Joseph Solis. Mr. Solis was accused of stealing a photo online, claiming it as his, and entering it into a contest organized by the Chilean embassy. He won a thousand dollars for the photo essay, along with a paid trip to Brazil and Chile. When he was unmasked as a fraud, he admitted having stolen the photo and apologized to the owner Gregory Smith by blaming the lapse in judgment on his youth, lack of experience, and intense desire to win. What's ironic is that the contest he joined in was meant to showcase the Filipinos' calidad humana or human quality which he successfully spoiled and tarnished with his plagiarized photo. And as it turns out, this isn't the first time he stole another person's work just to join a contest. He has done it for so many times, and he kept winning! This is one of those news stories that really gnawed at me. How could one person do something so devoid of thought, respect, and honesty? I made a little research and delved into the details of who exactly is Mr. Mark Joseph Solis and what made him do what he did. Here's what I found. Mr. Solis is a bright young guy, and his professors in UP all thought him to be a very promising student. He is on the editorial board of the International Association for Political Science Students blog A Different View and this is what his profile on the website says about him. • He is a legislative staff at the Office of Senator Pia S. Cayetano where he handles

The Silver Lining by Janey Montebon Duterte

policies concerning the youth and environmental sectors. • He works for the Philippine Society for Public Administration, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving public service in the Philippines, spearheading its three-year project called the "State of Good Local Governance in the Philippines" funded by the United Nations Development Programme. • He finished his Diploma in Comparative Politics and Public Administration (2011) from the Kyushu University in Japan on a JASSO Scholarship and obtained his BA in Political Science (2012) from the University of the PhilippinesDiliman, where he is currently taking his Master's degree in Public Administration. • With strong research interests on comparative Asian studies, democratization theory, and public policy, Mark has presented papers in many international conferences abroad, including South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, and Malaysia. • He was awarded as one of the 2012 Ten Most Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines and cited as a World Bank-Phillippines Youth Leader for Knowledge and Development for 2013.

The CAGAYAN de ORO TIMES

Given all those accomplishments, one would think that he is indeed a remarkable young man with [previously] pristine scholastic records and a long list of achievements. So why the need to cheat? Does he savor the feeling of always being on top that nothing else would feel as good? Has he become so enamored with winning that he will go to great lengths just to always be labeled a winner? Or is he merely a serial liar and cheater? Which leads us to the question, among those accomplishments, which ones are legitimately attributed to his innate capabilities and done fully without the help of lies and cheating? It's disheartening to see this happen. The internet has become a huge display arena of creativity and talent, and it has made creative people like artists and writers highly relevant again by offering a wonderful and endless space to showcase their works and talents. Unfortunately, that showcase of creativity has also turned into a pool of work that can easily be stolen and abused for malicious purposes. I sincerely hope that this incident would be a lesson to all of us. For those who think they are clever enough to get away with stealing somebody else's intellectual property, please, think again. With the level of “interconnectedness” and technology we are currently enjoying, sooner or later the fraudsters could be exposed and unmasked just as easily. And when that happens, all other accomplishments – everything they have worked hard on – will also be cast into doubt. So, how far are you willing to go to win? Hopefully only as far as our real capabilities and integrity can take us. “A life lived with integrity - even if it lacks the trappings of fame and fortune is a shining star in whose light others may follow in the years to come.” ~Denis Waitley

The Mindanoan’s tribes were accompanied with personnel Officer Amie Rabadon from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village in Cugman CDO. The first performer was the Umayamnon’s tribe who dwells along the watershed of Umayam River in the mountains, the Eastern side of the province of Bukidnon. Umayamnon or fierceness for their group is regarded as warlike and forest expert and they lived mostly on upland farming, fishing and gathering of non-timber natural resources. Umayamnon tribes are excellent makers of necklaces called “Ginaki and Inboy”, a beautiful beaded men’s bag called “Sunling” and unisex beaded bracelets called “Binukid.” Crowd wowed with the performance of the Subanon (river people), the second tribe of ethnolinguistic groups the native of the Zamboanga Peninzula in the western part of Mindanao. Bukidnon tribe with their colorful costumes are the third one to take center stage an ethnic tribe in the north of central in Mindanao who are into food gathering, agriculture, skilled in embroidering garments with arts best expressed in their dances, mat weaving and basketry.

Tigwahanon is found along the watershed of Tigwa River in the municipality of San Fernando Bukidnon and they have tree houses called “Batangan” built among the branches of a growing tree with the tree trunk as its solitary post and using bu-o (bamboo fish traps) in fishing. People of wilderness, the fifth tribe Higaunon is considered nomadic as they travel from one mountain to village to another, looking for more fertile soil and better harvest. The last tribe called Talaandig brought people to their feet as they showed their talents on the stage. Talaandig tribes continually preserve and promote its customs, beliefs and practices amidst the strong influx of modernization. Rabadon also expressed her sentiments and appreciation working with the six indigenous tribes. “It’s an honor to present these tribes because in them we can know the original life, traditions, crafts, skills of Kagay-anon or Mindanoans,” said Rabadon in a very enthusiastic voice.

TIGERS from page 1 At first, we approached even the small cubs with trepidation, even if they were sluggish and sleepy. But after the first session, everyone was suddenly eager to have their photo ops with the cuddly cubs. The big cats were another thing though. We were walking bunched together as advised by our guides, and approached two sleeping adults who looked terrifyingly big! But again, after tip toeing from the rear and getting close to them as we could, we were soon at ease as the pair totally ignored us and we had a great time getting the pics of a lifetime (check out the pictures!) Based on the feedbacks from previous visitors from many countries, reactions to the plight of the tigers are mixed: some think they are being exploited, still others don’t think so since they seem to be doing better than they would in the wild when poachers ruthlessly hunt them for their bones, eyes, whiskers and teeth which are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various ailments and diseases. The moral dilemma is up to the visitor to decide. If you think getting up close and personal with tigers once in your life is worth the 800-1,000 baht it costs you for 10 minutes with these magnificent felines, by all means go and have a blast at either Phuket or Chiang Mai. When planning itineraries to Phuket, visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand website at http://www.tourismthailand.org/. The Philippines’ leading low-cost carrier, Cebu Pacific (CEB) flies direct from Manila to Phuket every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for as low as P999. It operates the most extensive network in the Philippines for convenient and easy flight connections to Manila. For flight schedules and bookings, visit www.cebupacificair.com or call (02)7020888 or (032)230-8888.
