Beauty Recipes Straight from the Kitchen

• Lemon and honey facial scrub. All you need is half a lemon and a few drops of honey. Simply pour honey on the lemon and scrub all over your washed face. Leave on your face for a couple of minutes and rinse with warm water. Honey moisturizes and disinfects your face, making it glow, while lemon is a natural antioxidant that will help clear your face of blemishes. • Baking soda and honey scrub. Just mix a little honey with a teaspoon of baking soda and gingerly rub all over your face. Baking soda will help deep cleanse your pores and honey will keep it supple. • Lemon and egg mask. There are awful days when our skin just seems all red and blotchy. Soothe away the redness by mixing egg yolk with lemon juice. Create a paste by properly mixing the two and then leave the mask on your face overnight. • Skim milk facial wash. Try replacing your facial wash with skim milk and notice how smoother your skin becomes. This works even for the most sensitive skin too! • Oatmeal wash, scrub, mask, and everything else. Oatmeal is a wonder beauty product that can do magic on your skin. Ground it and sprinkle on your bath water, add it to honey and make a facial scrub, or mix it with egg whites and use it as a mask – the options are endless! But

no matter what you do with it, expect to end up with baby-soft skin. • Avocado and carrots treatment mask. Combine 1 avocado, 1 cooked carrot, half cup of heavy cream, 1 egg, and 3 tablespoons of honey. Leave it on your face for 10 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off. This mixture is teeming with vitamins, antioxidants, and natural collagen that could remove age spots, fight skin aging, and tone skin. • Apple cider vinegar cleanser and toner. Slough away dead skin cells that could cause clogging on your pores by applying apple cider vinegar in lieu of super expensive toners. You can dilute it with water before application or you can use it straight depending on your skin. • Honey and olive oil moisturizer. Create a paste made of olive oil and honey mixture. Apply onto dry skin and notice how hydrated and soft it becomes. There are so many other natural ingredients that we can use as beauty treatments, and all of it can be found in your kitchen or in the neighbourhood supermarket. Not only are these a lot less expensive than the regular store-bought products, it is also healthier and devoid of chemicals. Being pretty doesn’t have to burn holes on your pocket. Try it and see for yourself!

Winners for student category On the other hand, the Best Student Short Film went to “Wa Ko Kakita” (I Haven’t Seen It) by Eastine Charles Taneo from Liceo de Cagayan University (LdeCU). It also won 3 other awards: Best Story, Best Director for Taneo and Best Actor for Ray Anthony Vacalares. ‘Wa Ko Kakita’ is a film patterned after the legend of the pineapple but with some interesting twists and a modern appeal to the audience. “Kaon Ta” (Let’s Eat) by Richard Mars Caberte from XU landed as the 2nd Best Student Short Film, along with the awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Inspired from a real cannibal from Japan, Caberte’s film deals with perversion over the human flesh and the appetite-stirring horror that comes with his uncanny obsession. “The Perfect Girl” by Janine Banday from XU got the 3rd spot for the Best Student Short Film. Jocell Sedigo won the Best Actress award for her role in “Binibining Cancer” by John Solomon Legara, also from XU. Lastly, the Best Trailer went to “Perla” by Angel Frances Borres from Xavier University High School (XUHS).

Stepping stone Cinemagis served as the springboard for short films coming from Northern Mindanao to be screened during the 6th Cinema Rehiyon, the national film festival organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), to be hosted by XCCA on Feb 18-22. “Wa Ko Kakita,” “Unawa,” “The Perfect Girl,” “Kaon Ta,” “Lugdang,” “Ika-3 Putahi,” along with Butuan City’s “Diskonek” and the award-winning film thesis of Glenmark Doromal, “Ang Walay Kahumanang Adlaw” (Infinite Sun) will represent the region in the event. Cinema Rehiyon forms part of the National Arts Month (NAM) celebration in February. In addition to giving Northern Mindanao filmmakers national exposure, Cinemagis also aimed to promote local talents, voices and culture. To this end, the festival jurors, Dr. Steven Patrick “Tibo” Fernandez, Felimon B. Blanco and Rudolph Alama Gutierrez, together with Hobart Savior, the XCCA director, conducted a forum with the filmmakers to share some insights and tips on how to improve one’s cinematic language and aesthetics. “What is very important is the passion to pursue filmmaking. Keep on elevating your standards and prepare yourself for criticisms because that’s the only way to improve your craft,” Dr. Fernandez said, adding that today’s generation of filmmakers must challenge the mainstream cinema.
