Sharpening the saw:
Monster Kitchen Academy Immersion at Thai Me Up Centrio
MKA Baking & Pastry Arts Batch 26
O
ne of the most popular life lessons drawn from Stephen Covey’s seminal book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” is “Sharpening the Saw,” perhaps best described by U.S. president Abraham Lincoln when he said, “If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six sharpening my axe.”
Monster Kitchen Academy, undoubtedly Cagayan de Oro’s most popular and successful culinary school, is a firm believer in this proven adage. Before any of their Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts students are allowed to finish their course, they undergo mandatory immersion where the
batch is tested in the field by hosting a reallife event which they themselves plan, finance and execute. “This is to give our students first-hand experience on how it is to run an actual business, and not just learn how to cook or bake,” said Jan Uy, MKA and Monster Kitchen CDO President.
“This is a very useful exercise once they venture into their own business as some 75-80 percent of our graduates actually do.” The latest MKA batch to undertake immersion was Baking & Culinary Arts Batch # 26 which conducted an “Afternoon Tea” at Thai Me Up Centrio branch last 8 February 2016. Charmaine Shepard, batch president and a nursing graduate who operates Chef ’s Diner in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, said immersion gives MKA students like herself who had no formal
training in baking and management. “We do the menu, the planning, invitations, promotions, posters, target sales and organized ourselves into committees tasked with specific jobs,” she said. “Very good exposure.” Even students with an academic background like Christian Woo, a Hotels and Restaurant Management Graduate of Lourdes College, find the MKA immersion program worthwhile, being assigned to do the liquidation and postevent financial report for her batch. immersion/PAGE 6

Share your heart
“Take care of my heart” this is something we always tell our special someone. This is a wrong statement both literally and in the context of love. We should always be the one taking charge of our heart. Instead of letting someone take complete control over it, “share” it. In the concept of loving, share your love and let it be known, let that special someone take part in taking care of your heart. While in the literal sense take care of your heart with proper diet, exercise and ATC Fish Oil. ATC Fish Oil has Omega-3 fatty
acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are essential nutrients for a healthier heart. This combination helps lower blood pressure, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart attack. Aside from that, ATC Fish Oil also boosts the immune system, enhances cognitive function and improves blood circulation. ATC Fish Oil is also known to slowdown the development of plaque in the arteries and reduces the chance of abnormal heart rhythm. EPA and DHA found in ATC Fish Oil are nutrients extracted from cold water fishes and these are also beneficial for the brain and eyes. Note that, Fish Oil is not a medicinal drug and is not used to treat the symptoms of any disease. Put some love into heart health with ATC Fish Oil! s a homemaker, I do have a system in my home to make my job easier and hassle-free. I usually just supervise the household chores and just watch them do their jobs most of the time at the cctv cameras from my bedroom or wherever I am. I can say, I am very efficient at what I do because I love home keeping. Last month, my cook left to be with her boyfriend without asking permission so I wasn’t prepared. It took a month before I found a replacement. So, I had only one household help left and she couldn’t do everything all by herself. My system got all mixedup. I had to do some of the household chores myself. I cooked lunch and dinner, cleaned the
Where I Get The Energy rooms, folded the clothes and did some of the laundry. Not only that, I also had to train the new household help. It’s hard to train someone. But, I actually had fun doing them because as I’ve said, I love everything related to home keeping. It’s just my thing. I then realized that it consumed a lot of my time to the point that I didn’t have the time anymore to join my friends for lunch, I had no time to write/ blog, I missed watching my favorite shows and most of all, I got so tired physically and I fell asleep as early as 8pm. Yes, I was happy and I had fun because I was able to utilize all parts of my home. I got to spend more time in my kitchen, I got to spend more time at the other rooms, I got to enjoy my garden and we got to eat more often at the dining table (we usually eat upstairs at the master’s bedroom). I actually enjoyed my home and felt in-touch with it. Sometimes when you do the same things

Free from fault or stain? At the younger age of one of my nieces here in the Philippines, whenever she felt, she was wronged, she cried out, “It isn’t fair!” Fair has many meanings, such as lightcolored, not cloudy, hopeful, plausible, middling ... .How about “fairly”? Justly, tolerably, wholly ... My niece’s father, whose patience was always exhausted responded grimly, “LIFE is NOT fair!” In my opinion, that is not really a satisfying answer. Even adults often have troubles with the idea of fairness. The government body tasked to ensure fair competition, is investigating power firms
as well as scrutinizing telecommunication services in a bid to protect consumers against monopolies, cartels and unfair trade practices. We all can ver y well experience the monopolies of electricity or telecommunication services...! How about our workplace surroundings? How do we deal with our business partners? Yes, even adults have troubles with fairness. The laborers in the vineyard certainly did. They received exactly what they had bargained for, yet they complained when others got the same pay for less work. If this
parable were a stor y about earned wages, the grumblers would have been quite right to complain. But this stor y is about the way God deals with us, and how can we say that God is not fair? Fairness requires people to be put into categories. Anyone who fulfills certain requirements will receive a certain reward - regardless of any differences in the situation. God knows that categories only outline the sort of people we are. He knows that each of us is unique. He gives each of us according to our individual needs. In our ever yday life, do we practice the

Movie Snack Bar expands Centrio Cinema Experience
T
here’s a new snack bar right across the Centrio Cinemas that’s guaranteed to expand your Centrio cinematic experience. Candice A. Saligumba, operations association manager of Centrio Mall, said the new company owned enterprise dubbed “Movie Snack Bar” aims to level up the Centrio Cinema goers’ movie viewing experience to what their counterparts in first class cinemas around the world have long enjoyed. We checked out the new kiosk located just beside the Ticket Sales booth of Centrio Cinemas and indeed, you get more bang for the buck if you choose to buy your movie snacks here, sans the inconvenience of lugging all those bottles and bags of junk food all over the mall. For starters, there are five varieties of popcorn you can choose from in a variety of combos. Ms. Candice recommended we try the new Asian Gourmet flavor and indeed, it was a yummy choice! Other available include the classics Original, Barbeque and Cheese, and Sour Cream & Onions for the picky ones. Should you choose to get the P100 bucket size, you have the option of choosing two flavors for your bucket. Popcorn is also available in tumbler size for P60. There’s an equally exciting variety of flavors to choose your Nestle teas or juices (House Blend, Blue Lemonade, Dalandan or Cucumber Lemonade). That’s also available in regular size (22 oz. /P55) or large size (32 oz. /P75). Bottled water goes for P25 and bottled juice P35. And of course, what’s a movie without a hotdog? Available on-stick (P50) or in-sandwich
(P60), you have a choice of ketchup, mayo or mustard toppings. Going alone or with a friend? No worries. Ask for the Dramarama Combo for only P100 and you get 1 popcorn tumbler and 1 ice tea/juice (regular) on top of saving P15! Or upgrade to the Classic Combo for only P160 and get 1 tumbler popcorn, 1 jumbo hotdog sandwich and 1 regular ice tea/ juice and you save P15! But the best deal saves you P50 whopping big ones when you get the Good for 2 Combo Meals with 1 bucket of popcorn + 2 ice tea/juice for only P160! And for launching night, Centrio Mall reserved the best for last as we thoroughly enjoyed Dead Pool with Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein,T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, and Leslie Uggams. This must be the closest Marvel has got to putting one of its superheroes on film and Reynolds is just super in the title role. How good is it? Let’s have the box office numbers from Wikipedia tell more of the tell but parents be warned: there’s more to it than the R-16 rating may lead you to believe but better send kids over 21 na. Lots of violence, gore, violence, nudity and profanity is a mile a minute. But if you can leave your inhibitions at the cinema door and just enjoy it, it’s a really hilarious and enjoyable movie, the critics be damned. Don’t forget to put your them back on when you exit the movie, by the way. As of February 17, 2016, Deadpool has grossed $172.4 million in North America and $153 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $325.4 million. It had a worldwide opening of $264.9 million from 62 markets, which is the biggest of 2016, the biggest for an R-rated film, and the second biggest
for Fox, only behind Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith ($303.9 million). It also recorded the biggest IMAX 2D worldwide opening of all time with $27.4 million from 606 IMAX theaters, eclipsing The Dark Knight Rises ($23.8 million). [Wikipedia] Just a sampler before we go: As Wade/Deadpool leaves the house of the blind lady called Al where he’s been holding out, he says: “Before I go, I misplaced an eight ball of cocaine somewhere in this apartment and it’s right next to the cure for blindness.” (note: Al is blind and keeps muttering, “I miss cocaine!) Definitely R-18! Dunno how this got past MTRCB with an R-16 rating!

think of the people that you give pleasure because of the good food that families bond over. If you’re a fireman, you’re risking your life to save other people’s lives. Such an honorable job! If you’re a driver, just think of the family that you take safely to destinations. If you’re a politician, you have the power to make people’s lives better. If you’re an inventor and spends lots of time working then think of the people who are enjoying your inventions that make their lives better and more comfortable. If you’re a carpenter, you would be making a family happy because you have helped build their home. I can go on and on… Just look for the bright side of everything and it will instantly give you that energy boost that I am talking about. S part of Panaghugpong 8 or the National Arts Month 2016 celebration of Xavier University, Circulo de Arte staged an exhibit of 56 mixed media artworks done by students and alumna of the organization. In fact, the exhibit titled Juxtaphoria was so thrilling that the founder of Circulo de Arte, retired Xavier University resident artist Nonoy Estarte graced the occasion and appreciated the works of the younger generation who have continued the quest that he started decades ago. A collection
of fresh works, Juxtaphoria is a portmanteau of juxtapose and euphoria. Juxtaphoria would run in two months at the Fr. Francisco R. Demetrio SJ Gallery.
