Students academic performance in PE at the time of the pandemic By LORRY LEE G. LUNGAY Teacher I Tangub City National High School

THE world was shaken when the Covid-19 pandemic started. Businesses and school shut down and went into quarantine in order to isolate the spread of the virus. In doing so, school were forced t implement distance learning and a new routine was established to cope

with our current istuation. On the third school year since the pandemic, we are here to dive deeper into the impact of the new normal in the field of education namely in PE, a subject that requires physical engagement from both the students and its instructors. I

began as a PE teacher when I decided to grab the opportunity and took a leap of beautiful experience as a newbie. I started teaching just this year from January up to this day. I appreciate the environment of Tangub City National High School compared to others.

I have a lot to talk about the implementation of various teaching styles in these new normal times. One of them is to dive deeper into the available technology in order to better engage the students in an online platform.

Baguio to name Top 20 best, worst performing villages vs. Covid By Liza Agoot The city government will start naming villages that are exerting effort and those that are not performing well in terms of convincing residents to be jabbed against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) “We will be having a dashboard posting the top 20 barangays with the top booster doses. And unfortunately, we also have to post the 20 with the lowest booster doses,” Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, the assistant city health officer, said on Tuesday. She said there will be a daily countdown of booster doses that will be made public to let the people know the vaccination rate in their communities. “Our toll order from the city health officer is to do 500 booster vaccines a day,” she said.

Brilllantes said the city has been tr ying to convince the people to have a booster shot, adding that the local government aims for a 100-percent or booster vaccine accomplishment or higher, the same as fully vaccinated, which has reached over 105 percent. She said they used to do 200 vaccinations a day. “We can do that if we do it six days and in the next 10 weeks, that will give us 30,000 booster doses before October 8 increasing the booster doses from 51 to 61 percent,” she added. “We have not laid low, we were not waiting for people to come to the vax areas, but we have been utilizing the mobile vaccination teams from district jab sites to mobile groups to the big vaccination sites,” Brillantes said. Agri 10 deploys sentinel piglets as prelude to swine repopulation in Iligan City

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Department of Agriculture - Northern Mindanao (DA-10) launched its Sentineling Program for the recovery of the swine industry in Iligan City, being the first African Swine Fever (ASF)-affected area in the region. On July 28, in coordination with the Iligan City Veterinary Office (CVO), about 302 heads of sentinel piglet were distributed among the hog backyard raisers in the five affected barangays of Pugaan, Mainit, Digkilaan, Mandulog and Kaplag. Overall costing P6.62 million the program also includes the provision of drugs and biologics, along with the distribution of animals, and feeds, which are yet to be delivered in August, this year. According to DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado, the sentineling program is a science-based preparation for hog repopulation in the ASF-stricken towns and cities to ascertain if said disease is still present in an area. He added that the pro-

DA-NorMin Livestock program Coordinator Maria Lourdes M. Sypiecco explained, that the beneficiaries of the sentinel hogs [one hog per beneficiary] were prevalidated and inspected to ensure that they have complied the establishment of a

biosecurity system in their farms. “Within 40 days, the hogs will be monitored by the Barangay Biosecurity Officers, who have undergone training through DA-Agricultural Training Institute (ATI). Later on, as the hogs will

be tested negative from ASF or any other hemmorhagic fever virus, the city will be lifted to ASF green zone, where small hog raisers can readily avail other programs of DA INSPIRE, such as the Construction of Biosecured and Climate-controlled Finisher

Facility, Swine Industry Insurance Program, among others,” Sypiecco noted. Meanwhile, Marceliana A. Lacasa shared how the program is beneficial for them as small hog raisers. “Isa ako sa mga naapektohan ng ASF sa aming barangay at nabigyan ng indemnification ng DA. Aalagaan ko nang maayos ang biik na ito at pararamihin upang mapagkakakitaan pagdating ng panahon,” Lacasa said. Moreover, Iligan CVO headed by Dr. Maria Dahlia M. Valera, has also given the beneficiaries with 1 gallon each of disinfectant for the biosecurity system of their respective backyard farms. Dr. Valera also urged the farmers to be vigilant and to report any suspicion of ASF in their community for the success of the program, and attain the goal of reviving the hog industry. Also present during the said distribution is Kevin R. Fernan, officer-in-charge of Iligan City Agriculture’s Office, barangay chairs and other staff of CVO and DA10.# (Edgar M. Bentulan, Jr.)

Hints and Traces

When God seems harsh to us “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” (Mt 15,26) These words of Christ certainly must have sounded harsh to the Canaanite woman who begged him to cure her daughter who was tormented by a demon. But instead of being turned off, she persisted in her request. She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” And that’s when Christ said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour. (Mt 15,27-28) Sometimes God tests our faith if only to purify and strengthen it. We should just persist in going to him even if he seems to reject us. With God we should not be afraid or ashamed. He always cares for us. This should be the attitude to have. It’s an attitude that can only indicate our unconditional faith and love for God who is always in control of things, and at the same time can also leave us in peace and joy even at the worst of the possibilities.

We have to follow the example of the many characters in the gospel who, feeling helpless in the many predicaments they were in, earnestly rushed to Christ for some succor. They went to him unafraid and unashamed and they got what they wanted. It may happen that we may not get what we want. And in this, we should not be too surprised or too worried. What is sure is that God always listens and gives us what is best for us. If our request is granted, it’s because it is good for us. If our request is not granted, it could be because what we asked is actually not good for us. Examples of this kind of cases are aplenty, and many would later on realize how lucky they were that what they asked for was not granted. We should not forget that God will always listen to us and will act on our requests promptly and in the best way for us, considering both our immediate and the ultimate needs, and no matter how imperfect the object, motives, and manner of our petitions are. Remember the parable of the persistent widow and

Roy Cimagala

the unjust judge narrated in the gospel of St. Luke, chapter 8. The conclusion of that parable is the following lesson we should learn at heart: “Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off.?” (7) This lesson is reiterated in the gospel of St. Matthew where Christ said: “What man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (7,9-11) We should therefore have no fear or shame in going to God for all our needs. We should persist in our requests even if he appears to be harsh to us or even to reject us. His heart will give in with our persistence!

Have my say

Just a Loan

Sweet words are easy to say; nice things are easy to buy; but good people are different to find. Life ends, when you stop dreaming; hope ends, when you stop believing; friendship stops, when you stop sharing. A good friend of mine sent me this quotation. I commented back: So very true and very well said! Our life is borrowed - from God. No rental charges are collected from us. Many of us have forgotten this and live life to the fullest. Our life is equal to a book from a library that lends one. But how insatiable and unbearable are we in disdainful acting towards life and therefore to ourselves? Remember: life is just a loan! My life is on loan, like money borrowed from a bank. God is the lender, and He retains the right to call in the loan any time. Though I am responsible for taking care of it, I do not own this life; it is borrowed. Why should I fear its loss

or the loss of anything else in this world when I must surrender it all anyway? Life seems to be nothing, just being ready to riddle one with bullets. Life seems to be nothing, just being broken through indifference and unreliable and immoral behavior. Life seems to be nothing for those people who don’t understand cries from the heart of other people around them - cries for their hearts and families, for justice and for many other things. Life with all its ups and downs, is just a loan, but for many of our fellow creatures it just seems to be nonsense to be littered like a dump. And, if people try to survive, especially during these days, and if they just experienced (once more!) indifference, arrogance, ignorance or cheating by whomever - they will give up! I can assure you that every one of us can at first help in prayers and

in reading the bible. “Proverbs” is the probably most down-to-earth book in the bible. Its teachings prepare you for daily life, the street and the market place. The book offers warm pieces of advice you get; practical guidance for making your way on earth. Proverbs covers any kinds of questions you might have right now. Anybody can relate to the generalities of Proverbs, because this book simply tells how life works most of the time. While writing this piece, I observed that more and more people struggle through life: tired, hopeless, experiencing their rock-bottoms, believing in fallacious “people” around them. I also observed a lot of people living See LOAN, page 11

NegOr goat breeders to learn milk, dairy production By Mary Judaline Partlow

Unlike other farmers who raise goats for their meat, a project being introduced in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental aims to train breeders on producing milk and dairy products instead. Engr. Gilbert Arbon, provincial science and technology director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Negros Oriental, on Tuesday said goat milk production is a research project of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD). Looking forward to face to face classes By JOAN P. OHAY Teacher III Gusa Regional Science High School – X

PNP has started security preparations for the resumption of face to face classes in public elementary and high schools next month. The PNP assured the public that they are ready to secure students and teachers when inperson classes resume on August 22. Securing educational institutions is not new to them as they have done it in schools where limited face to face classes have resumed. They will be using the same template in implementing security procedures to maintain an orderly environment in schools. They would identify schools in areas that

posted higher Covid-19 cases and crime incidents. More police personnel will be deployed in these areas. In her first order as Education secretary, Vice President Sara Duterte mandated all elementary and high schools, whether public or private, to resume full face to face classes by November 2. The PNP expects that more people will be going out not only in schools but also in other public places when physical classes are fully implemented. Health protocols must still be observed such as the wearing of face masks to avoid the spread of the coronavirus and other infectious diseases.

livestock, and monitor their accomplishments to ensure a successful implementation. Arbon said they turned over last week 40 Anglo Nubian goat “doelings” to eight farmer cooperators in Zamboanguita to start up the dairy goat breeding project. They were selected based on certain criteria, such as their farm being located in an area with access to water, having a forage garden, and they should be able to grow their own feeds for the goats such as grasses and legumes. “The intention here is to encourage goat farmers to raise these animals for their milk, which can also be used for dairy products, with a growing demand for it in the local market,” he said.

Role of Teachers in New Normal Education By: CHRISTIAN GEM C. PIMENTEL Teacher I Regional Science High School

Almost every aspect of our existence has been impacted by the global pandemic. Our ability to wait it out and slow down for COVID-19 is being put to the test. It puts to the test and will continue to put to the test our capacity to separate fact from fiction on the virus and the safety measures required to stop its spread. The effects of this pandemic are immediately putting our world’s emergency services, economics, and social fiber to the test. The p andemic has caused a change in two fundamental factors. First, pedagogical modifications have emerged as crucial since standard in-person lecture models do not

work in a distance learning setting. Every family has essentially become a classroom without a conducive learning atmosphere, so teachers must adjust their techniques and be inventive to keep students engaged, regardless of the channel utilized (radio, TV, mobile, internet platforms, etc.). Second, the pandemic has altered how instructors allocate their time between instruction, student interaction, and administrative responsibilities. We can help students understand the material provided in our curricula and academic standards while also assisting them in acquiring the skills necessary for today’s learners.

Teachers can use the current tumultuous environment to experiment with project-based learning, flipped learning, maker learning, or another student-centered method. Teachers must be learning facilitators rather than sage on a stage. Despite the long-standing practice of doing just that, educators’ jobs do not involve demonstrating to children their intelligence. Instead, a teacher’s role is to enable students to develop their own autonomous thinking and action. Education professionals need to move the burden of learning from the teacher—where it has historically been—to the students—where it belongs.

Online Etiquette

By: Joey Marie S. Revelo Secondary School Teacher III Ozamiz City National High School Social Media Regulation Act on 2017 or the House Bill 5021 provides effective identity verification on all social media users to ascertain the authenticity of an account. Under this bill, every social media user must observe a responsible and fair exercise of his right to expression and opinion. With numbers of fake news posted on different social media platforms, it is now difficult for us to identify if the information is true or not. It is alarming that fake news has spread like wildfire on the online world and it is our task to be careful on relying and using these data. The use of social media networks plays a vital role in every individual’s life. Different media platforms provide users with immediate answers to questions, news, and gossips. Social media serves as the internet to majority of Filipino users. In fact, over 80% of the Philippine populace uses social media as a tool to interact and entertainment. According to the study from the Pew Research Center, Facebook has been the top media platform for years now because it is the easiest and cheapest to access. It is followed by

Instagram, Snaphat, and Twitter. Young adults, ages 18 to 29, are the ones using social media more often and developed it into a lifestyle. 90% of young adults are involved in some social media network. At most times, social media can really be advantageous. It allows users to conveniently stay in touch with their peers and family who are miles away. It has been also used to increase awareness on social and political issues. Social media is also a great help to improve quality education and provide adequate learning to students and other network users. At often time, the use of social media platforms can also be unfriendly. Connecting to social media can decrease real-life interactions with your friends and loved ones. It can possibly result to cyber bullying, stalking, hacking, and invasion of privacy. With the ethical use of social media, these things would never happen and steer you away from the real-world situations. It is only right to propose bills and laws that will protect the user’s identity and privacy. The proper use of social media is a must to be an ethical and

responsible online user. There are ways to be responsible in using social media platforms. First, be transparent. If you don’t stay transparent on your interactions through social media, you risk losing all you have and your reputation could also be irreparably damaged. Second, be aware of anonymity. Allowing anonymous people to follow your account or give feedbacks to your media sites can heighten the risk of privacy invasion. Third, be sensible when posting and distinguishing authentic information from fake ones. Guided with these tips, we can be an ethical and responsible social media user. The purpose of social media will vary on how we use it. It can either be a tool to get useful and reliable information, or it can also be the opposite. Considering the Code of Ethics, we must use social media responsibly. We don’t only consider our own thoughts but we also need to respect other person’s opinions when sharing something on the internet. We have to be aware and be part of the goal on social media ethics. We have to act now!

Mentoring keeps W. Visayas MSMEs resilient amid pandemic By Perla Lena

Steam Healing: SAUNAt Real

The Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) mentoring program for micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) has kept businesses afloat amid the pandemic and helped them discover alternative raw materials without sacrificing the competitiveness of their products. DTI Regional Director for Western Visayas Rebecca Rascon said on Tuesday they already produced 621 graduates since the Project Kapatid Mentor Me (KMME) was introduced back in 2016 and none of them have stopped operations or have shut down. “One of the requirements of the KMME is that you have an existing business for at least one year and not would-be entrepreneurs. They also have to survive in order to continuously provide for a few number of people that has become their responsibility,” she said in an interview. The Project KMME, which has evolved into Kapatid Mentor Me: Money and Market Encounter Program (KMME MME), is a 10-module training program that

The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Learning Quality By: CHRISTIAN GEM C. PIMENTEL Teacher I Regional Science High School The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has brought about an extraordinary disaster across the board. In order to stop the spread of the virus and lessen its effects, this emergency in the sphere of education has resulted in the widespread shutdown of face-to-face activities of educational institutions in more than 190 nations. There are three main areas of action in the field of education as a result of the crisis: the deployment of distance learning modalities through a variety of formats and platforms (with or without the use of technology); the support and mobilization of education personnel and communities; and concern for the health and general welfare of students. Many of the measures that the region’s countries have adopted in response to the crisis are related to the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels. Through education, we gain knowledge about our society and environment and develop the skills necessary to improve them. Education also enables us to form our own perspectives on life,

enables us to form our own points of view, and enables us to form our own ideas on various aspects of life. Today, learning does not involve acquiring knowledge. Through various websites and e-based platforms, everyone with the desire now has access to vast amounts of data and information. Schools, training centers, and higher education institutions have been forced to close in the majority of countries as a result of lockdown and social isolation measures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The way educators deliver high-quality instruction— through a variety of online platforms—has undergone a paradigm shift. Despite the difficulties faced by both educators and students, online learning, distant learning, and continuing education have emerged as the cure for this unparalleled worldwide pandemic. Both learners and teachers may experience a completely different learning environment when switching from traditional face-to-face learning to online learning, yet they are forced to adjust because there are few or no other options.

intending to borrow money for the expansion of their business. “Primarily the purpose is to continuously bring about or increase the level of understanding, the level of expertise of these MSMEs in managing their individual business enterprises,” Rascon added. She said that by teaching MSMEs production operations, they realized that it’s not always necessary to purchase raw material goods from Manila. There are alternative raw materials available in the province or even in Panay that they can combine with other materials to produce competitive products, she

added. Rascon cited rattan, one of the major materials for the furniture sector but is imported from Palawan and Mindanao. “Later on, they discovered that it can be combined with wood and bamboo thus they purchase less from the outside and make use of what is available and abundant in Western Visayas,” she said. On July 29, the second batch of this year’s online mentoring program composed of 51 all-female mentees in the region and one from Bohol had their graduation ceremony via Zoom. The next training program will be held next year. (PNA)

Hearing the unthinkable mass grave in New York City , watching the outnumbered funeral homes in Italy and observing the relentlessly increasing number of death around the world brought by the global pandemic, people desperately resorted to find alternative means to fightoff the virus. Hence, the rebirth of steam healing. Steam inhalation or tuob/ suob is a homemade sauna or steam wherein one’s inhaling water vapor from a basin of infused water which has been used as a home remedy within centuries and gives temporary relief from clogged nose brought by common cold. Some uses it as a therapy for nasal allergies, as well as sinus infections. Yet the Department of Health (DOH) debunked the claims and stated that tuob does not kill SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. Dr. Earl Louis Sempio, a pulmonologist and biochemist tackled the good and bad sides upon applying steam inhalation at a certain virtual conference accompanied by pharmaceutical and healthcare company Unilab which cleared false claims and affirms regarding the traditional treatment. In addition, tuob was recognized by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Health Care that were tasked by the government to present facts and information with regards to traditional health practices last June 30. They found out that scientific studies proposed

steam inhalation’s effectivity were excellent against symptoms of colds. However, Sempio declared that steam therapy may give a person relief yet it is still not a cure for Covid-19. Furthermore, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire explained that there is no scientific evidence that proves that inhaling steam with other ingredients such as salt can kill the virus. The practice may even result to obtaining adverse side effects like burn injuries. She also added that the World’s Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention refused to the said claims. Clear enough, steam healing is not a cure for Covid-19 and as it has been for centuries, only gives relief from common colds. It is highly important to consult the experts first than do self-medications without acquiring exact knowledge about it. Listen and follow to doctors as to confirm what to do and not easily believe on things in social media as not all information that lies in it are true, just like the steam inhalation as cure for Covid-19 to avoid injuries and bad effects. As of now, people are hopeful for the efficacy of the covid vaccines which had arrived in the country and are very optimistic that they will finally put an end to the deaths caused by the horrifying Covid-19 pandemic.

New technologies is an opportunity or entrepreneurs By: JANICE S. BERIGAY Teacher III Baliwagan NHS

REDUCING the failure rate, promoting equal opportunities and allowing the mastery of new technologies are fundamental challenges for education in 2022. The coronavirus pandemic has causes significant changes in education. During the moments of confinement, research laboratories were closed, the courses were given remotely and the students and staff (not being used to this mode of operation), were forced to adapt despite the increase in social inequalities, xenophobia and student mental health issues. Almost two years after the confinements, education is becoming more than necessary to focus on other future eventualities considering the world’s socioeconomic needs: economy and community. Not only has

the pandemic redirected education but the challenges and issues related to public evolution and the strong presence of digital technology today require schools to set new objectives and different methods based on innovation using technological tools. In addition, schools today cannot be done using traditional methods because of the many challenges. Many more young people seek training. It is more than a necessity for education be open to a more significant number of young people. In order to understand the new education challenges, it is necessary to analyze the provision of distance learning considering the number of students above the schools’ capacity and the students’ part time work (if they are already in senior high).

For the wet season, yield increased from 3.69t/ha in the 2019 wet season to 4.03t/ha in the 2021 wet season. “Napakalaking tulong po ng RCEF-Seed Pogram sa akin at sa kapwa ko magsasaka dahil nakatipid po kami sa binhi. Di na po namin ito bibilhin at nakakasiguro pa po kami na ito ay sertipikado. Acero said he harvested 138 cavans, averaging 55.3kg/cav, when he planted the NSIC Rc 402 he received from the program. Meanwhile, the RCEF-Seed Program has initiated the development of site-specific fertilizer recommendations to further help farmers increase their yield and ensure that their fertilizer inputs are cost-efficient. Through clustering barangays based on their soil type, the program assessed the nutrient status of the rice areas using Minus-One Element Technique (MOET), a diagnostic tool for detecting soil nutrient deficiencies in actual field conditions based on the crop growth response. Its results, which will include recommendations on the right element, amount, and timing of fertilizer application, will be packaged through information, education, and communication materials that will be disseminated in the target areas. The program is collaborating with the RCEF-Rice Extension Services Program in this initiative. “Through this, we want to

help farmers make more informed decisions in their crops’ nutrient management. With the expensive fertilizer prices and farmers’ existing resources, it is important that they use what only is useful and beneficial for their rice crops,” Bordey noted. PhilRice studies show that knowing the right element, amount, and timing of fertilizer application can help increase efficiency in input cost and nutrient uptake. The RCEF-Seed Program is a component of Republic Act 11203 or Rice Tariffication Law, which allots P10 billion funds every year for the rice farmers from the rice tariff earnings of the country. The program is a six-year government initiative to help farmers improve their competitiveness. The local government units and lawmakers assist in its implementation. Mandated to help ensure a rice-secure Philippines, DA-PhilRice leads the RCEFSeed Program. It is also the government’s lead agency on rice research and development.

Digital Teaching as The New Normal Our world is changing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is also posing numerous obstacles. In addition to becoming a health issue, it sparked global economic collapses. Many employees were laid off as a result of company closures and found themselves suddenly jobless. In addition to all of these measures, schools were shuttered in the majority of nations to stop the virus’ spread. In the context of necessary closure, different forms of online education and education resources should be mobilized. Countries should use their existing online distance courses whenever possible, encourage education technology companies to make their resources freely available,

By: ERNA D. SEROJALES Teacher III diversify the modes of delivery depending on age and capacity, and encourage teacher collaboration. Synchronous learners are instructed to behave in an online class as if they were attending one in person. They are assembled in a virtual classroom where everyone can communicate with their teachers and other pupils using digital devices. Synchronous learning and asynchronous learning are distinct. Students are provided with access to a portal where they can access their classes or educational resources at any time of the day. Live video discussion is not a part of this teaching methodology, but students may watch recorded recordings. Real-time

communication is not feasible, though. Teachers can lecture students remotely from the comfort of their homes using a variety of platforms. Several “virtual classroom” services are presently offered on a global scale. There may already be curriculum and resources in various digital formats accessible through distant learning platforms (text, video lectures, etc.). The lectures and exercises that students view and complete, as well as the messaging and synchronous classroom tutoring methods, are normally up to the teachers to decide. In locations without platforms, open educational resources may be used similarly.

The Development of Critical Thinking as the Primary Goal of the Educational Process By: CHRISTIAN GEM C. PIMENTEL Teacher I Regional Science High School

Today, educational institutions around the globe are realizing how crucial it is for students to improve their critical thinking abilities. We live in an era of information, and thanks to the internet and mobile computing devices, everyone has access to a wealth of knowledge. The ability to distinguish between true and untrue, pertinent and unimportant, and biased and impartial information is known as critical thinking. Success in this fiercely competitive world requires the ability to think creatively. Due to their capacity for making wise decisions amid testing circumstances, people with this competence are in high demand by all businesses.

The capacity to think critically is the capacity to think beyond what is being told. In a way, it alludes to a person’s propensity for making unconventional choices to make sure that a scenario is favorable to them. Although this ability grows with age, it is frequently linked to a keen feeling of curiosity and a desire to understand the unknowable. If someone wants to compete in the professional sphere, they must have the capacity to anticipate trends. Some people are born with the ability to think critically. It is a skill that may be learned with the right instruction from teachers in a learning environment. The

emphasis of the educational system has always been on rote memorization and students’ capacity to remember what their teachers have taught them. All courses, with the exception of math and science, mainly rely on rote learning and memory. But doing experiments in a scientific lab or solving problems in a math class are not the only applications of critical thinking. Both men and women need it in a variety of circumstances across a wide range of professions and economic sectors. These are the explanations for why contemporary education places a strong emphasis on the necessity for all pupils to acquire critical thinking abilities.

ICT INTEGRATION IN EDUCATION By: ALEX R. DELA VEGA

Information and communication technology (ICT) has evolved quickly in the twentyfirst century, changing the expectations of contemporary life. ICT (information and communication technology) is playing a bigger role in people’s daily lives and the educational system. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have considerable promise for advancing learning effectiveness, knowledge dissemination, and the creation of more effective educational services. Information and communication technology (ICT) adoption in education has also been viewed as a potent way to support educational change, better prepare students for the information age, enhance student learning outcomes and competencies, and give students the tools they need to survive in the information society. Global educational institutions must adapt to the drastically shifting economic and social landscape in which their graduates will work and prosper. Schools are challenged to transform from being merely places where information is transmitted to enable learning, assisting in the growth of higher order thinking abilities and the acquisition of knowledge and skills for lifelong learning. In an effort to bring every student up to pace with peers in rich economies, the Philippine government has made a commitment to modernizing the countr y’s educational system, particularly in the area of basic education. is due to the fact that in today’s knowledge economy, the ability to use, produce, and transform information into knowledge and a wide range of commodities and services is particularly important for both social and economic development. Along with this effort, there are ongoing curriculum revisions and changes, teacher training programs, and investments in school infrastructure and facilities, one of which is geared toward the goal of providing each public school with a contemporary computer and other ICT-related devices and educational resources. It is clear why the DepEd is interested in creative ways to incorporate information and communication technology (ICT) into classroom instruction and learning. The information and communication technology (ICT) integration approach to education is being actively pursued by both the international world and the Asian neighbors. However, incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) into the learningteaching equation is not as simple and straightforward as it sounds, and there are undoubtedly more extensive requirements for advancing technology in the classroom. In light of this goal, it is essential to analyze how information and communication technology (ICT) programs are being implemented, especially in government schools, in order to quickly address any new educational issues that may result from them.

Project KCS—Knowing, Caring, Serving KCS Learners In this Time of Pandemic

The Kadayawan Cultural Village featuring the replicas of the traditional houses of the city’s 11 tribes will be reopened on Friday as the city allows in-person activities for the month-long Kadayawan Festival after two years of online celebration due to the pandemic.

He said each tribe is allocated P250,000 for the renovation and repair, and most are now nearing completion. “Based on our meeting last Wednesday, some houses are

Gravitational waves – the future of astronomy By WELBY BUSTAMANTE RICO Teacher I Mayor Alfonso Tan High School

WE only detected our very first gravitational wave in 2015. Over the next two decades, we’ll have thousands more. Although gravitational waves were an extractable prediction from Einstein’s General Relativity all the way back in 1915, it took 100 years for humanity to successfully detect them. Today, we’ve detected merging black holes, merging neutron stars and neutron stars

merging with black holes via gravitational waves but so much more is still to come. A whole series of new detections will be enabled with upcoming technology, ushering in a new era of astronomy for us all and expanding the definition of what astronomy actually entails. It was over 100 years ago that Einstein put forth in its final form the general theory of relativity. The old

Newtonian conception of gravitation where two massive objects attracted one another instantaneously with a force proportional to their masse and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them disagreed with both the observations of Mercury’s orbit and the theoretical requirements of special relativity where nothing can travel faster than light, not even the force of gravity itself.

Kauswagan Central School is a complete central school located along the highway. It is approximately 3 kilometers away from the heart of Cagayan de Oro city. Among the 9 central schools in the division, KCS has the smallest land area with only 7,371 sq. m. comparing to its counterpart, KCS is a bit far in terms of structure ,most of its classrooms are undersize for an enrollment of 2,542 with 82 teaching and non-teaching staff. R.A. 9003 also known as ecological solid waste management act, an act providing ecological solid waste management program, creating the necessary institutional mechanism and incentives. It embodies waste segregation as a vital component identifying materials that can be used and that can be recovered”,

emphasizing on recycling, reusing and composting as methods to minimize waste problems. To address quality education across all boundaries, Kauswagan Central School builds a strong partnership with various stakeholders and resolve issues and problems related to learners performance with cooperation and participation of all walks of lives. The school created Projects KCS dubbed as Knowing, Caring and Serving the KCS Learners. This is in response to the mandate of government making our learners as the beneficiaries of our efforts and advocacies. This school’s project encouraged the parents, teachers’ involvement of Ecological Solid Waste Management, for we believe, any dream can never be realized without the collaborative contribution

of the optimum body. We tied up with the LGU, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Rotary Club, Inner Wheel Club of Uptown Cagayan de Oro City, National Telecommunication Corporation and other various agencies that helped the school with its plight to a beautiful, clean and green environment. Project KCS also helps implement the programs and various practices in achieving the goals of the Department of Education. It also helps the school in nurturing the child to develop holistically and prepare them for the future. As the saying goes, failure to plan is planning to fail…the future has to be planned as early as now for better Kauswagan and Cagayan de Oro as a whole.

“A teacher in a differentiated classroom does not classify herself as someone who ‘already differentiates instructions. Rather, that teacher is fully aware that every hour of teaching, every day in the classroom can reveal one more way to make the classroom a better match for its learners.” – Carol Ann Tomlinson K-12 and higher education classrooms are filled with students from discrete cultural backgrounds, who have unique interests and learning needs. The processes by which we, as the teachers, strive to meet the needs of these diverse students remains a challenge, a great challenge, indeed! Developing the higher order thinking skills of our learners paired with activities tapping the multiple intelligences is a method of teaching that promotes and improves student learning potential by modifying curriculum and instruction to provide a variety of learning paths which accommodate the students’ learning needs. However, will these suffice? In a typical English class, students are expected to develop analytical skills. Classes habitually revolve around reading novels, essays and other kinds of literary pieces which involve the learners to analyze data, interpret and dissect written materials in order to compare, contrast and discuss elements such as the themes, characters and so on and even tap their proficient writing skills in paragraph compositions. And as a teacher, this may require us to go beyond our typical teaching strategies and styles so we would be able to produce learners whose skills are beyond the average. Here’s where Edward Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences comes in. This theory refers to the different ways our students learn and acquire information. Such may

Order Thinking Skills) as well as the usage of questions in HOTS. As teachers, there is a must for us to develop these skills so our learners will advance their cognitive demands. Students are encouraged to think beyond literal questions as they read between the lines. These will promote their critical thinking skills because these types of questions expect students to apply, analyze synthesize and evaluate information instead of simply recalling facts. True enough it is vital for us teachers to provide different types of multiple intelligence activities as they will appeal to a wide range of learners; vary the tasks so that I touch upon all the types of intelligences now and again and always be flexible whenever problem arises. This may seem to be tough. Yet when we are able to contextualize this, it will surely suffice a smooth – sailing teaching and learning process.

instructional strategy. Each student has unique multiple intelligences and has different ways to learn. In other words, not every person learns best from a single teaching approach. As a teacher, this is what I constantly remind myself consider the varied learning styles of my students in order for me to incorporate instructional strategies that will enhance their learning potentials. Moreover, students learn best when teachers adopt various instruction techniques. Some students learn best when they can reflect the things they have learned. They learn by listening, brainstorming, and sharing ideas with others. On the other hand, some students learn best through conceptual learning and logical thinking, while there is also a good number of students who want to be actively involved in their own learning by practicing hands-on problem solving. range from the use of words, numbers, pictures and music to the importance of social interactions, introspection, physical movement and being in tune with nature. This theory posits that an understanding of which type(s) of intelligence our learners may possess can help us adjust our teaching strategies to adapt their learning styles, and even suggests career paths for them. In short, the MI theory suggests that all humans possess eight intelligences (in contradiction to the traditional theory, where it is accepted that there is only one intelligence). These eight intelligences exist as a unique combination in each one of us, something I would like to call an intelligence “mindprint”. Gardner regards these intelligences not as skills, but as “biological potentials which are realized to a greater or lesser extent depending upon opportunities and motivation “. (Gardner, chat session, 2004) Hence, as teachers we must incorporate activities which will cater the multiple intelligences of our learners. As what George Evans’ says “every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way.” Each of our students has his or her way of processing information in terms of how they learn and how they retain the knowledge. Though majority of our students learn and understand a particular concept through the traditional lecture, we must also consider our students who have other means in acquiring new concepts and knowledge especially now as

the poisonous substance has travelled further downstream, reaching as far as Davao River. “In our investigation, there were dead fish in this tributary river. It’s dangerous. If you see dead or weakened fish, you cannot catch and consume them because it might affect your health,” Baloran warned. He said the chemical could potentially cause health hazards to people who come in direct contact with the contaminated water as it could cause severe burns of the skin, vomiting, and diarrhea. He said that personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection had recovered most of the chemicals but there were some that had already made their way to the river. One million rice farmers receive RCEF seeds

T

hree years after its maiden implementation, more than 10 million bags of certified seeds were distributed to about one million farmers from the 42 target provinces under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF). Estimates also show that rice areas planted with RCEF seeds reach 1.5 million hectares yearly. As of July, 1.57 million bags were distributed to more than 630,000 farmers in 731 cities and municipalities, with an estimated area coverage of 720,000 hectares for 2022 wet cropping season. The RCEF-Seed Program, being implemented by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DAPhilRice), continues to operate in 42 provinces that have high potential to adopt certified inbred seeds. With the OneDA approach, which aims to maximize resources and unify efforts of the agencies under DA, provinces not included in RCEF are being assisted by the National Rice Program. The RCEF-Seed provinces include Ifugao, Kalinga, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Albay, Masbate, and Sorsogon in Luzon.

RCEF-Seed Program also reached Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Negros Occidental, Bohol, Negros Oriental, Biliran, Samar (Western Samar), Southern Leyte in Visayas. For Mindanao, the Program also served Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Lanao Del Norte. Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao Del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Lanao del Sur, and Maguindanao are also included in the program. Meanwhile, a study conducted by the Socioeconomics Division of DA-PhilRice showed that certified seed adoption in the RCEF provinces increased from 48% in the 2019 wet season (prior to RCEF’s implementation) to 84% in the 2021 wet season. High utilization rates were also recorded as 98% of the farmerbeneficiaries have planted the RCEF seeds within the actual

season they received the provision. The study affirmed that farmers plant the seeds when they receive it in time for their planting dates. “In close coordination with our partner-local government

units, we carefully plan the seed delivery schedule in every city and municipality. This made seed distribution activities timely based on the planting period of various localities,” said Flordeliza Bordey,

head of the DA-PhilRice RCEF Program Management Office. Around 97% of the farmers in the 2021 wet season also mentioned they were satisfied See SEEDS, page 5

PLGU Davao de Oro to strengthen the implementation of Health Care Law

The Provincial Government of Davao de Oro through the Provincial Health Office recently conducted an orientation about Universal Health Care (UHC) Law to the Local Chief Executives (LCEs) of the 11 municipalities held at Prosperity Hall, Nabunturan DdO on July 29, 2022, to see to it that the constituents receive the best health care possible that is equitable for all. The UHC act, also known as R.A. 11223, was signed into law by Former President Rodrigo Duterte last February 20, 2019. One of the goals of this legislation was to make PhilHealth membership mandatory for all Filipinos which assures that everyone has the access to quality and affordable healthcare they require wherever or whenever they need it. During the orientation, Governor Dorothy Gonzaga emphasized the importance of implementing the reforms that are embodied in the law, which would bring positive changes in the health care system in every municipality. She points out that LCEs must realize those reforms to ensure that every individual is protected from health risks, ensure equitable access to high-quality, low-cost healthcare as well as save them from financial risks. She also encouraged all the LCEs to further improve the Rural Health Units (RHUs)

“Sa mga dili kabayad, naa ta mga social worker kada provincial hospital nga mag-assess kung Indigent or disadvantage. As long as mupasa siya sa social worker nga ‘incapacity’ gyud sya ug dili kabayad, automatic covered sya sa PhilHealth. Walay obligasyon ang LGUs sa pagbayad kay ang mu-cover sa mga pasyente kay ang national government na through point of service,” Molina said. Governor Gonzaga added that the Mandanas Ruling opens the door for Local Government Units (LGUs) to provide better service delivery to its constituents and through the collaborative efforts of LGUs in realizing the reforms and visions of the UHC law, the constituents will receive the best health care services in the province. (Jaynus Fernandez - Information Office, Photos by Jonie Cadiz)

or Health Centers (HCs) of the respective municipalities by getting accredited with PhilHealth and Department of Health (DOH) so that it could be an avenue for the constituents, especially the less fortunate individuals, indigenous peoples, and vulnerable populations, to easily claim such benefits when emergencies arise. In a statement of Christopher Molina, the Local Health Insurance Head of PhilHealth Nabunturan, says that through the PhilHealth

Point of Service under the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP), the patients identified as financially incapable by the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction will get health subsidies from the national government. This indicates that they are also protected by the No Balance Billing Policy, which states that disadvantaged or indigent patients are not permitted to be charged any further fees beyond the package rates.
