Let A Thousand Cooperatives Bloom: A Poem for Mindanao

IN expressing opinion, it is always done in prose. This time for a change, let me do it in poetry as the outpourings of words do not just come from the mind but direct from the heart. This gives more credence to that adage in the Little Prince that “it is only through the heart that one can see clearly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” That supreme force in the Universe called love beacons all of us in the cooperative movement to exemplify the spirit of oneness irrespective of color, creed or class as we are all in fact, the sons and daughters of Mindanao. It now behooves upon us to shed-off our apathy, unlike that frog that was boiled-up to death because it cannot detect temperature changes. You know that experiment in Biology 101? It runs something like this. You take a frog and put it in a pot of cold water. Put the pot on a stove and turn it on to start boiling. As the water in the pot gradually heats up, you tell the frog to jump, to save itself, but the frog, if it can talk, will just say, “what is it that you are talking about, nothing is wrong, am ok.” So, it will just sit there until it is boiled

up to death. In the past, we were just like that frog in many ways. We lost our forest and mega-diversity, we acted as if nothing was wrong. We lost our seas and rivers and all of our ecological integrity, we just didn’t mind. As poverty worsens and oppressive systems and structures are turning-on the heat, we seem not to care to democratize wealth and power. Today, we cannot afford to lose even that most essential value in life, peace and unity, otherwise, we will lost everything. We now take heed of the many sufferings visited upon our people and we now declare that enough is enough, even through this simple poem: Let A Thousand Coops Bloom & A Million Hearts Content for Peace Oh Mindanao, where ecological wealth abounds! So rich in fisheries, agriculture, forests and mines, Where beauties do not end at the shorelines, But in the Mindanawons’ courageous hearts and minds.

Orlan R. Ravanera

Amidst nature bounties lies hunger and poverty; Why a few with so much to enjoy? Yet the many with too little or nothing at all! Each shapes the Mindanao we hold dear, Behooving upon us to shed-off apathy and fear. Now listen to the cries of the multitude, Hear what they agonize in their solitude: “Oh, give me food, be it burnt or stale, It kills the fire in my stomach, In exchange, take whatever you like, I could surrender my freedom or life for food, With little food, I can start the day before sunrise. I can shake out the knotted hair of the stormy sea. Love, sadness, thought, I set at nothing. I will give all for food.”

There, in the land of the Empowerment of the See POEM, page 11 brave and the free,

Politics in a time of pandemic

AMID the turbulent pandemic, politics has literally taken us to a bumpy ride this early as we get nearer to next year’s national election. The frantic alignment of forces went agog overnight and had become the menu of the day on socmed platform. And to dispel the thinking of those political dimwits, it’s Inday Sara who will occupy Malacanang in 2022, like it nor not. It’s still a Duterte who will reign supreme in the next six years, and even beyond. Take note of the recent win of Mindanao athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Bottomline is: positive karma has indeed been good to the people of Mindanao, once touted as the hotbed of regional strife and insurgency. With all respect to the recent defeat of the country’s boxing legend Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Mindanao today has already etched a name in the arena of global sports and more. Be that as it may, the 1Sambayanan-led opposition is having sleepless nights where and what party will they affiliate with, and eventually campaign against the well-entrenched DU30 and company.

Indeed, PH politics is now brewing hot, regardless of the urgent need to get back to our toes and exigently address hunger, poverty and all the economic dislocations that Covid-19 pandemic has taken its deadly toll on us. These interwoven challenges must be responded with a sense of urgency because we are all in this together sans those politicians whose minds are primarily focused on the campaign trail. Truth of the matter is their rush to get themselves on board the bandwagon either way, as long as they float on course regardless of party affiliation. Clearly, they are awfully hungry of power like vultures in the wild not mindful of what is happening to our country today, healthwise. Indeed, the damage of Covic 19 seems irreparable, but what is there to thank about is that we are alive and kicking (bless all the souls that went ahead. May they rest in peace!) Meanwhile, we are still in a highly precarious state as far as leveling off the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, now with Delta variant, wreaking havoc in every corner of the land. And sadly, a see-saw

Ruffy Magbanua

thing is what we feel right now as the pandemic continues to creep in every inch of our dear lives. Having said that, there is still possibility of a surge of the pandemic midway through the holidays (ber months are just a wink away) and onwards to the campaign period early next year. Covid-19 has turned our way of life completely upside down — from the economic side of it to the adjustment disorder we are now facing on a global scale. In fact, an unprecedented level of anxiety has been spreading like wildfire for almost two years now with no exemption in sight — rich or poor, the healthy and the weak, young and old alike are all easy victims of the pandemic. The lifting of restrictions would likely result to a dramatic and devastating effect as vaccines are coming in by trickles. The pandemic has now incited the worst economic slump since the Great Depression. See PANDEMIC, page 11

Youth more attuned with financial security goal: study By JOANN VILLANUEVA

MANILA – Some people think the youth are just squandering their time on unimportant things even during the pandemic. However, this is contrary to the results of a study done by a life insurer which showed that generation Y or the millennials aged 25 to 40 years, and the generation Z aged 15 to 24 years are “very conscious” about securing

their financial health. In a virtual briefing for the release of the report “Know Your Ys and Zs: A closer look at the financial and mental well-being of Filipino Millennials and Generation Z in the time of Covid-19” on Wednesday, Manulife chief marketing officer Melissa Henson said the 500 respondents who participated in their survey, See ATTUNED, page 9

Malnourished children in Salay, Mis. Or. show improved health conditions after DOST intervention THE Department of Science and Technology-X rolled out DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) complementary food technology to 128 malnourished children in Salay, Misamis Oriental. One Hundred out of the 128 children show improved health conditions from severely underweight and underweight to normal. This resulted in a significant decrease in the malnutrition rate in Salay. The DOST PINOY (Package for the Improvement of Nutrition of Young Children), under the DOSTFNRI Malnutrition Reduction Program (MRP), is a program focused on supplementary feeding of RiceMongo Food Technology to identified malnourished children between ages 6 to 59 months for 120 days. (NNC) in its recently released report in the 47th Nutrition Month Talking Points with the campaign title “Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, First 1000 days tutukan!”, the period of six months to two years old is a critical period when the

child has increased nutrition needs. At this stage, a child is prone to diseases and infections, while physical and mental damages during this period become irreversible. Thus, this period also is the window of opportunity for nutrition intervention.

The MRP, through the DOST PINOY, is DOST’s response to address the malnutrition problem among the Filipino children supported by its Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program.

Rodrigo Duterte’s tandem is a “smokescreen” for Sara Duterte’s presidency. Teachers’ role in the new normal By JAMAICA SCARLET T. NABONG Teacher III Patrocinio Elementary School

The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic can be considered the greatest challenge that education has faced in modern times, significantly disrupting institutions worldwide and billions of learners of all ages. In response, academic institutions conducted courses online and faculty and staff worked remotely due to safety and travel restrictions. Virtual setups have since become the new norm, from teaching and learning to graduation ceremonies. The dire circumstances have effectively removed faceto-face group learning in all educational levels and changed the online learning landscape. Despite the vast challenges, educators were quick to learn new technology skills. Surprisingly, they were able to develop digital resources for a complete academic year as web-conferencing platforms gradually became their new classrooms. Edu-

cational institutions were also quick to deploy online learning courses combined with eclectic methods to meet educational goals in emergent situations. Indeed, these are extraordinary times that require a range of responses and a lot of creativity and innovation. These experiences demonstrated resilience and revealed a potential for excellence in online teaching and learning. But building on these will require time, effort, and resources to make them sustainable. More importantly, educators must be provided with technological tools, the freedom to adopt innovative approaches, and capacity to share learnings to a broader community for wider applications. Online education leadership also plays a key role in adopting strategies to improve the quality of online programs and establish processes to manage innovations in teaching for greater efficiency.

How important is the role of parents in modular learning By CHYRELL NEMENZO ECHEMINADA Teacher 3 Canitoan Elementary School

MODULAR learning modality is competency-based then detailed and there are parts or activities for the children to read and answer. If your child/children learned independently prior to the pandemic, this is ideal because there is a lot of reading and activities to do. Parent supervision is needed because there are ten subjects in each grade level. But under a modular setup, there are only two subjects are given per day. Modular learning modality is effective because parents can focus more on their kids. Modular approach to teaching enables the learner to have control over his/her learning and accepts greater responsibility for learning. It demands greater maturity on the part of the learner.

Tthe modules are more appropriate for more mature students. This refers to a learning delivery modality where learning takes place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from each other during instruction. This modality has three types: modular distance learning, online distance learning and TV/ radio-based instruction. It Involves individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner, and other learning resources like Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides and other study materials.

Urgent action needed to cushion Covid impact on education By RHEZANI MARIE C. BALDO, Teacher III Labo Central School Division of Ozamiz City P-2, Labo, Ozamiz City

NUMEROUS challenging experiences on education are happening in countries across the world. Some of the most privileged students and teachers have been able to cope with the changes after schools closed but not all. 2020 marks a dramatically different childhood experience that these young people will remember for the rest of their lives and a different teaching experience where teachers have had to rapidly adapt, be creative and shift roles. This different education service over many months has the potential of having a huge negative impact on students’ skills and economic prospects for the rest of their lives. Covid-19 is wreaking havoc on the lives of young

children, students and youth. The disruption of societies and economies caused by the pandemic is aggravating the pre-existing global education crisis and is impacting education in unprecedented ways. Even before Covid-19 hit, the world was experiencing a learning crisis. 258 million children of primary and secondary school age were out of school and the learning poverty rate in low and middle income countries was 53 percent i.e. over half of all ten-year-old children could not read and understand a simple text. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the learning crisis and the impact on the human capital of this generation of learners is likely to be long lasting.

As a means to improve its systems and strengthen its operations, the DSWD acknowledged the COA report, with clarifications that the funds for the assistance to former rebels were accounted for. done between April and May this year, identified staying healthy and avoiding illness, saving money, becoming financially independent, securing a well-paying job, and establish a business as their top priorities. On the other hand, their top stressors are running out of money, getting sick, their own death or

death of family members, declining mental health, and drowning in debt. Henson said the pandemic has far-reaching consequences and this has made the younger generations become more aware of the importance of their physical, mental, and financial health. Ensuring financial stability has risen among the youth, she said, citing that what the young generations want are products and services that are not only aligned with their beliefs and interests but those that will help them secure a stable future. “Understanding this behavior helps us find new ways to innovate and introduce more relevant financial protection products so we can better support them as they fulfill their most important goals,” she added. The study showed that the respondents save money to protect themselves and their families for any eventualities, pay for basic living expenses, support immediate family’s future needs, to have

funds to start or grow a business, and ensure their retirement funds. While most of the respondents aim to keep within their budgets and save at least 25 percent of their monthly income, Henson said some admitted to failing on this and saving only around 10 percent of their income.

She said around 81 percent of the respondents said they take necessary steps to financially secure their future, 77 percent prioritizes spending on necessities over wants, 82 percent does not want to incur debt that they cannot pay, and only 19 percent saves money for luxuries. (PNA)

The Philippines has a total of 2,472,210 doses of Pfizer vaccine procured by the government and 2,479,239 doses acquired through the COVAX Facility. The latest shipment brings the country’s total number of Covid-19 vaccines to 48,885,590 doses. (PNA) READ MINDANAO DAILY NEWS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.mindanaodailynews.com

And here is the takeaway and why: the economic impact of the pandemic may last a little longer even if the underlying cause is contained quickly amid the smell of PH politics this time of pandemic. Sadly, we are not over on this yet. The task ahead is unbearable indeed with politics now shaping up in the four corners of the land. Meantime, stay safe. Keep the distance. the coastal town highway. “Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the attempt,” Baldomar said, adding the bomb experts were on time to avert possible explosion which may hurt many people passing the area onboard their vehicles. Meanwhile, DBS Mayor Marshall Sinsuat confirmed that the military deactivated 3 fragmentation grenades beside the national highway in Barangay Pura around 2:00 pm last Tuesday. “The police and military are still determining who could be behind the foiled grenade attack,” the mayor claimed. The mayor was saddened by the said and appealed to the residents to remain calm and vigilant in helping authorities by reporting suspicious-looking individuals who may only want to disrupt the peace and order of the town and the province as a whole. “We have a peaceful town, please help us maintain this,” the mayor concluded.

If may paraan, lumayo ka na…”, she said explaining the breaking point at which youth organization member need to relinquish their membership. Aside from working for heightened awareness among youths regarding insurgency recruitment, NTF ELCAC is also reinforcing the mandate of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to empower IPs. Florendo explained that NTF ELCAC draws public attention to the disadvantaged situation of IPs leading to outpouring of assistance from local government units (LGUs) and national government agencies for IP communities. Florendo gave credit to the issuance of Executive Order Number 70 on

Saturday, August 28, 2021 Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) through whole-of-nation approach which has forged convergence of efforts and resources across all sectors of the country For the next 10 months before the end-term of President Rodrigo Duterte, she said the NTF ELCAC intends to work towards “establishing government presence in remote communities”, reaching geographically isolated and depressed areas to bring government services. “Para makikita ng mga tao, ang serbiyso ng gobyerno,” she said. It will also continue exposing the modus operandi of front organizations which she said, ultimately had wanted to overthrow the government. NTF ELCAC will also intensively communicate the gains as a result of E.O. 70, she said. (PIA XI/ Jeanevive Duron Abangan)

motorcycle. The suspects, police said, chanced upon the victim, a certain Lemuel Bulak, a resident of Luyong Bonbon, Opol, Misamis Oriental, while negotiating his driven motorcycle along the JR Borja Bridge - the suspects forced him to stop and then shot him in the leg. The police investigators admitted they have yet to identify the perpetrators of the broad daylight robbery along JR Borja Bridge but said they are continuing and extending their tracing and tracking of possible whereabouts of the motorcycle-riding suspects. The ZCMC serves the PLHIV in the Zamboanga Peninsula and also those in the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and TawiTawi, which are under the jurisdiction of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). “We don’t have a problem with the medicine they need, we can send it to

The ZCMC treatment hub data showed that 443 PLHIV, including transient patients, were served or are under the care of the hospital since January this year. According to a statement, the transient patients being served by the ZCMC treatment hub are those PLHIV from other places stranded in this city because of the health pandemic. All the patients are treated with antiretroviral drugs for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) supplied by the Department of Health, the statement added. Aside from ZCMC, there are also treatment hubs for PLHIV in the provinces of Zamboanga Del Norte and Zamboanga Del Sur. PLHIV or HIV-positive people have the human immunodeficiency virus, the agent of the disease Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). RCWESTCDO steps up vax drive to protect workers CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Geared towards protecting the region’s workforce, the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10 and Department of Health (DOH)-10 held the ‘BIDA Bakuna Para sa Manggagawa: A Vaccinated Work Force for Nation Rebuild’ webinar, August 20. “The Department of Labor and Employment of Region 10 would like to extend our full support to these noble undertakings. The campaign, which aims to inform, educate, and engage our labor force in promoting the vaccination drive and other related policies to mitigate the COVID-19, indeed is very important to ensure the health and safety of our country’s labor force,” DOLE-10 Assistant

Regional Director Estrella Pahalla said. She further added that the activity also supports the BIDA Solusyon sa COVID-19 campaign of the Department of Health (DOH), which aims to encourage the Filipino people to take an active role in the fight against the pandemic, and encourage change in behavior and mindset among the target audience. Fostering healthy workplace Emphasizing the great role of the workers in still delivering services and results amid the current health crisis, Engr. ColsidRey Tubiano of DOLE-10 highlighted the programs and services that should be observed by companies to protect the safety and health of workers in the workplace. The Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10 and Department of Health (DOH)-10 holds the ‘BIDA Bakuna Para sa Manggagawa: A Vaccinated Work Force for Nation Rebuild’ webinar, August 20, to heighten awareness on the enforcing health protocols in the workplace. (RCWESTCDO)

He reiterated the DOH’s call on obs er ving the minimum public health standards, especially the wearing of face masks and face shields at all times. “Most-at-risk population for COVID-19 in the workplace and those below 21 years old, shall continue to observe work-from-home arrangements. When needed to occasionally report to work, they shall be allowed to, provided a certificate of fit to work is secured from OSH (Occupational Safety and Health Standards) personnel and must stay in the workplace only for a specified number of hours,” Tubiano added. Establishments and offices must also ensure contact tracing means to help prevent and contain the spread of the virus in the workplace. In addition to those who use the contactless forms, Tubiano said such should be handled with the utmost confidentiality and securely disposed of after 30 days. DOLE also takes part in the implementation of the Safety Seal Certification, which is a voluntary certification scheme that affirms that an establishment is compliant with the minimum public health standards set by the government and uses or integrates its contact tracing

with StaySafe.ph. The department issues the Safety Seal for the manufacturing, construction sites, utilities (electric, water, gas, air conditioning supply, sewerage, waste management), information and communication companies (private publication, news, movie production, TV and radio companies), and warehouses. The virus and its containment Briefly discussing the characteristics of COVID-19, Dr. Dures Fe Tagayuna, a pediatric surgeon in Cagayan de Oro, said the virus needs a human cell to develop itself. Thus, if people are wary enough to strictly observe the health protocols, the virus may die out naturally. She added that inside a virus, there are molecules called nucleotides, which form different combinations and these often cause the changes in the components of the virus. “Sometimes, the variations can make the virus a tiny bit stronger-better at transmitting, more dangerous, or more resistant to the immune system. These strains can thrive,” Tagayuna said. Previously, the common symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, tiredness, loss of taste or smell yet these have changed

through time to headache, sore throat, runny nose, fever, and persistent cough. Moreover, with the Delta variant, the original 15-minute transmissibility has increased to 15 seconds, and one person could infect 5-8 other persons. In fighting such, Tagayuna said it is very important to observe proper handwashing, of at least 20 seconds, since COVID-19 has a lipid membrane, “Meaning, fatty membrane. ‘Pag tinamaan siya ng sabon (If the soap hits it), the foam of the soap, nadi-disintegrate siya (the virus will disintegrate); that can protect us.” Aside from wearing of face masks and face shields, proper handwashing or sanitation, and social distancing, Dr. Wellaflor Brito of DOH-10 said vaccination further protects people from experiencing severe effects of COVID-19. “Local Vaccination Operations Centers shall ensure the functionality of an AEFI (Adverse Event Following Immunization) Investigation Team that shall conduct timely and comprehensive AEFI investigations following the standard epidemiological investigation principles to be continually reviewed based on guidance from the World Health Organization, with See DRIVE, page 11
