Those We Can Contain, We Must, To Stop Price Increases WHEN price of petroleum and that of electricity goes up, so does all of the prices of everything else –from needle to ten-wheeler truck – so to speak, that requires the use of energy as production input. At this time of the pandemic when millions have become jobless and are living in extreme poverty, such non-stop increases of prices should be stopped! The spiraling cost of petroleum products is something that is said to be beyond our control due mainly to the law of supply and demand. What with China’s seemingly insatiable demand for oil needed by its mushrooming industries, there seems to be no stoppng in the demand and so with the escalating prices of petroleum products. The culprit is that law which states that when the supply is greater the demand, price is low; but when the demand is greater than the supply, price goes up. Talking of that law, I remember an anecdote in the brief but interesting administration of then President Ramon Magsaysay, who one day asked his Cabinet why the price of rice had gone up. When told that it was because of the Law of Supply and Demand, he immediately told his Finance Secretary to work with Congress for the repeal of that law. I see the joke not at all a negative portrayal of the Man of the Masses. On the

contrary, his track record as President had been characterized as pro-people and nationalistic, as he gave credence to his motto that “those who have less in life should have more in law.” I am quiet sure that if he were the President today, he would do everything in his power to arrest the pattern of price increases, that is, if the factors that are causing such increases are within control. Now, the question that each one of us must reflect upon is whether there are factors which are within our control to contain with regards to price increases. If in fact there are, what are these? My contention is that everything sold in this country is doomed to pass at least five layers before it reaches the ultimate user, with each layer gaining from the flow. Take for example the flow of the much-needed farm input, a bag of inorganic fertilizer needed for the production of rice, corn or what have you. From the manufacturer, it goes to a distributor, then to a wholesaler in Manila, then to another wholesaler in the locality, then to a retailer called the agricultural dealer and ultimately, sold to the poor farmer. This is the reason why the price of a bag of Urea sold to a farmer costs as high as a thousand pesos but should in fact cost only five hundred pesos when bought directly from

Orlan R. Ravanera

the distributor. In fact, a bag of Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer bought only at P50 per bag in Ukraine is sold in Mindanao at P800; a Lipitor pill bought in New Delhi at P.035 is sold in our pharmacies at P50. The reverse is also true. The produce of the farmers are actually bought cheap by the local traders but has to pass several layers of middlemen who would profit at the expense of the poor farmers and consumers. The formula now as sought by the cooperatives is to link our farmers directly with the manufactures or distributors of fertilizers to erase the unscrupulous profiting of the middlemen. Networking of farmerproducers directly with the consumers will forego the unnecessary intervention of local compradors who are the ones immensely Indeed, everyone if profiting from farming, i.e. the fertilizer and seed dealers, the compradors, the middlemen and the usurers but not those who are working so hard to make the land productive under the excruciating heat of the sun or the coldness of the rains. This is the reason why many have already left farming to work in the urban centers as janitors, drivers, waiters or what have you that See PRICE, page 11

Ridiculous Facts

WITH around 200 countries and more than 7.8 billion people (plus plants, animals, and other organisms), the world is full of interesting, fun, and fascinating facts. In the land of the Kiwis, for instance, you’ll find the highest concentration of pet owners on the planet. And over in Nicaragua, you’ll find one of the only two flags in the world to feature the color purple. A mistaken belief accompanies us each and every second of our life. Incorrect decisions and wrong doings are part of our daily life. It is almost a ridiculous fact that man wants to know certain truths about mundane things. But really, he seems least interested in even mundane truths as can be read many times in our daily newspapers or online for example. There seem to be too many rash judgments, and the readers absorb these and make these their own. A fatal attraction! This is sometimes referred to as journalistic mentality wherein accusa-

tions are generously made without proof. Evolution started this trend, when scientists stated for example that man evolved from the apes - without proof. The only proof they had was the missing link, and, if I am not mistaken, it’s still a missing proof until now. To look for proofs is a mental activity, which is no longer a common thing nowadays, because it takes really time, effort and is too serious to think about. Yet in Christian education, thinking right is very important. That’s why Philosophy is important in Christian life. To avoid error in thinking, the rules of right reasoning must be studied and mastered. Is it really totally neglected in today’s modern education? Thinking is actually an enjoyable activity but when one is pressured to get a good job for one’s sustenance, then the other more mundane becomes attractive. After all, great thinkers often do not get (good?) jobs... . Spiritual writers like

Klaus Doring

the British Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) noticed that mankind had stopped thinking even two centuries ago. Wow. That was during his age. Man probably stopped thinking even earlier. He has ceased many times to search for the truth. It’s easier to listen to gossip and believe in it. What a sign of weak minds! Too often we are blind to the truth. As a consequence, we easily believe in lies; we only have to like it. Too bad, if people always like to close their eyes and ears especially while experiencing the delusion of error. +++ Email: doringklaus@ gmail.com or follow me on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter or visit www.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot. com or www.klausdoringsclassicalmusic.blogspot.com.

PMA to honor Lacson with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in public service IN recognition of his over 50 years of outstanding contributions in government and public service, the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association, Inc. (PMAAAI) will confer a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ on Partido Reporma chairman and standardbearer Panfilo ‘Ping’ Lacson. Lacson has been unanimously voted by members of the Board of Directors of the PMAAAI to receive the award for his “exemplary and unblemished service to the country” characterized by his “faithful adherence to the virtues of Courage, Loyalty, and Integrity.” In a letter dated De-

cember 15, 2021, Cavalier Amado T. Espina, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the PMAAAI, said Lacson established a “reputation beyond reproach and worthy of emulation” that brought honor not only to himself and his family, but also the entire PMA and its alumni organization. The awarding ceremony has been scheduled this Saturday (February 19) during the annual Alumni Homecoming and Parade of the PMA at the Borromeo Field, Fort General Gregorio del Pilar, Baguio City in Benguet. Lacson is expected to be in town today (Friday).

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Thursday morning, Lacson said he is going to accept the award along with his other fellow cavaliers, who will also be recognized for their achievements and contributions during their alumni homecoming event. Lacson first mentioned about receiving a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in a presidential interview aired last month over the ABS-CBN News Channel, where he avoided a question that would cast his political rivals in a bad light and decided to just speak about his track record. “Tumatakbo ako kasi

‘yung pinaghatian namin (I am seeking the presidency because) between us more than 80 years in public service—executive [and] legislative—kaming dalawa ni (me and the) Senate President,” Lacson said, referring to his running mate Senate President Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III. “Ako, 50 years, tatanggap nga ako ng Lifetime Achievement Award sa PMA sa February. Ang tingin ko, parang tama na ‘yung na-i-contribute ko sa ating society. Pero look, sayang naman siguro ‘yung experience ko [at] ‘yung track record ko,” the presidential See HONOR, page 10

Health experts call for more vaccine options on pediatric COVID vaccination HEALTH experts called for more options on pediatric COVID vaccination to meet the goal of 39 million COVID-vaccinated kids and achieve herd immunity. In today’s Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel with the theme: “Kids Kontra COVID: Urgent Need for Safe Options in Children’s Vaccination”, Vaccine Solidarity Movement (VSM) founders Dr. Lulu Bravo, Executive Director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV) and Dr. Benny Atienza, president of the Philippine Medical Association, stressed the need for pediatric COVID vaccination and allayed fears of parents amid the continued proliferation of misinformation and fake news regarding vaccination. Dr. Bravo explained why vaccination for minors is necessary: “Getting COVID-19 carries a risk that children may become very unwell. There is also a potential to develop post-COVID-19 symptoms and/or severe complications such as Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). Naturally

infected children can also spread the virus to others. Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk and protect children from developing COVID-19 in a safe and controlled way. It can also reduce the chance of spreading the virus to others. “ Another factor that can accelerate vaccination, including the pediatric kind, is the presence of more vaccine options in the country. To date, only two have been approved for child immunization by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While only one brand is currently being used in the inoculation of kids 5 to 11 years of age, Dr. Bravo said that “Clinical trials are still ongoing for other brands such as Sinovac, a Korean vaccine, and [another] Chinese vaccine.” Sinovac is, in fact, being used already in pediatric COVID vaccinations in other countries such as Indonesia. Dr. Bravo also stressed the importance of avoiding vaccine fallacies by listening only to doctors and public health experts.

I thought I have contributed enough to our society. But, look, maybe I can still do more with my experience and track record.) The longtime public servants are banking on their combined 83 years of experience in public service, 42 of which were spent in the Senate, and the rest on various roles under the executive branch. They have agreed to campaign based on their own merits and not on the deficiencies of their rivals. “I’m always proud of my track record, my integrity, and my competence. I don’t mean to brag but I know myself; I know my limits and I know what I can (still do for our country),” Lacson said further in a mix of English and Tagalog. In 2020, Lacson already accepted a Cavalier Award for Public Administration from the PMAAAI. He was honored for spearheading the fight against corruption in the Senate by enacting laws that focused on promoting transparency and public accountability in government. The Partido Reporma chief also said he is going to maximize his two-day visit in Baguio City by holding dialogues with multisectoral groups to introduce himself and his platforms of anti-corruption and good governance to its residents. He also plans to take a side trip to nearby provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija before going back to Manila to begin the Southern Luzon leg of his ongoing national campaign with Sotto and their senatorial candidates next

week. The principle of ‘leadership by example’ has become a rallying cry for the LacsonSotto tandem and members of their campaign teams on top of adopting the taglines ‘Aayusin ang Gobyerno at Uubusin ang Magnanakaw’ (‘Fix the Government’ and ‘Get Rid of the Thieves’).

In 2018, Ayala group deepened its commitment to the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the Filipino by being more deliberate and purposive in identifying areas where it can contribute substantially and help solve global issues. WORK ENGAGEMENT By: JESSIEL B. MIPARANUM

The passion and excitement with which a person approaches his work is referred to as work engagement. For many professionals, finding work in the middle of the pandemic has proven difficult. Due to the health constraints imposed by the epidemic, it is challenging to feel secure. Many people have felt anxious as a result of these issues influencing

their work performance, and the lack of organizational support as well as changes in their attitude toward work may have contributed to this phenomenon. As a result, it has been determined to investigate how an employee’s attitude toward work and perceptions of organizational support influence his work engagement.

from page 6 December, while the 2023 figure was changed from 3.2 percent to 3.3 percent. The projections for both years remain within the government’s 2-4 percent target band until 2024. In a virtual briefing on Thursday, BSP Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila Jr. said inflation dynamics are driven by few commodities. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data show that inflation in January 2022 slowed to 3 percent from the previous month’s 3.2 percent, both of which have been based on 2018 prices. Dakila said around 55.6 percent of the items included in the consumer price index (CPI) basket posted an inflation rate of below 2 percent, while 21 percent registered an inflation rate of above 4 percent. “So given that situation, we can say that there is really limited evidence for secondround effects now actually having a play on how inflation is evolving,” he said. Second-round effects are brought about by price shocks, such as higher oil prices, resulting in an increase in fare and energy prices. The rate of price increases breached the government’s 2-4 percent target in February 2021 after accelerating to 4.1 percent. It declined to 3.7 percent in June and July, but surged to 4.4 percent last August before slowing down again and posting a 3.2 percent rate last December. The average inflation last year stood at 3.9 percent, high-

er than the previous year’s 2.4 percent. Authorities attributed higher inflation to supply issues on fish and pork due to the impact of the African swine fever and the surge in global oil prices. Dakila said these factors are best addressed by nonmonetary policy measures, which the government is implementing through higher importation of fish and pork as well as fuel subsidies. He said monetary authorities support the proposed Livestock Development and Competitiveness bill since this will boost the livestock sector’s capacity and will help address supply issues. “These will all help to prevent the occurrence of secondround effects,” he added. Reflection on “The Miseducation of the Filipino” by ESTERIA G. WAGA Teacher III City Central School

In his essay entitled “The Miseducation of the Filipino,” Prof. Renato Constantino emphasized that even after American colonization, we were not free from the Americans; instead, we were heavily colonized and became un–Filipino Filipinos. Thus, he wants us to wake up and gear our education towards cultural, political, and economic rebirth since our education was an instrument of American colonial policy designed to divide society and hinder nationalistic development. After reading this essay the Miseducation of the Filipino, I can’t believe it, all the while I thought that the Americans’ most significant contribution to us Filipinos was the introduction of the American system of education, which in turn, led us to form a national identity and Filipino nationalism. Still, as I dug deeper, it turned out that it was the exact opposite. True to its title, the miseducation of the Filipino. On the other hand, I will take this as an advantage rather than a disadvantage as a teacher. We cannot deny that the English language we are using right now, which holds the most significant impact on American Education, is the language of commerce

and law and the primary medium of instruction in education in many parts of the world. Proficiency in the language is also one of our country’s strengths that has helped drive the economy and even made our country our beloved Philippines’ top voice outsourcing destination globally. So then, as an elementary teacher, what’s my biggest challenge? It doesn’t matter that the language we are using is derived from American colonization, which in turn, we are not free even now. The elephant in the room that needs to be addressed is how to give equal footing to our Philippine culture and heritage. How can we promote Filipino and emphasize its value? Then and so, this calls for the modernization of the Philippine Educational System. It’s high time to free our children from the misconception that they are superior to others once they are good at speaking English. This is the missing link to our progress. Once we ultimately establish in our children our identity as Filipino citizens, beginning from our language, we would develop their passion for making our nation great at a very young age.

Mathematics and the Pandemic

by PRINCESS ANNE GALAROZA ACUT Teacher I Initao National Comprehensive High School

EVEN without hesitating to research, Mathematics is the most hated subject. But did we realize that Mathematics are just numbers? Maybe numbers with letters and symbols that made it complicated. This does mean that because of this complicated adjacent, Math is already difficult to hurdle. Those who said that complicated adjacent are also numbers, the letter that represent a number and the symbol is a part of a number. The pandemic is moving high and low. Mathematics was to used to count, summarize and analyze its movement. In times of pandemic, the students, parents and teachers are very affected.

Especially how teaching process in Mathematics or any hard subject could be. But the Department of Education did not stop training teachers to become more effective in any situation they might encounter. Even if there is no faceto-face situations in school, teachers are learning and always willing to share and to teach new trends in reaching out the goal of sharing knowledge to students. Mamasainged and his sons Sadam, Sadre, Johari, and Kamaro, and five other relatives were instantly killed while three others were injured on the scene, one of whom died in the hospital on Feb. 16. Mamasainged was reportedly involved in a decades-old “rido” with Jordan Mama Lintang alias “Commander Jordan,” leader of a private armed group, which stemmed from land conflict and territorial dispute. Police said Lintang and his son Morsid were believed to be behind the ambush. According to Capt. Fayeed Cana of the Maguindanao provincial police office, the suspects and the victims were related by blood and by affinity. Mamalapat, who is reportedly running for vice mayor in Datu Saudi Ampatuan in the May elections, denied having any hand in

the ambush, saying it was even him who facilitated for the peaceful settlement of the “rido” between Mamasainged and Lintang. “It was me who wanted a settlement of their dispute, how come you have this report that I masterminded the ambush? That is not true,” Mamalapat said in media interviews. A joint investigation is still being conducted by the police, the BIAF and the government-MILF ceasefire panel to help settle the conflict and prevent any retaliatory attacks.

Cebu Pacific showcased as Asia’s greenest airline in Singapore Airshow Cebu-themed A330neo and branded cabin experience on display at trade event SINGAPORE – Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the Philippines’ leading airline, proudly participates in the Singapore Airshow as the only Philippine carrier in the prestigious trade event to showcase its newest Airbus 330neo aircraft, bolstering its status as the greenest airline in Asia. It is the first time that Airbus has chosen a carrier from the Philippines to be featured in the Singapore Airshow. Cebu Pacific’s A33neo is on permanent display during the four-day event (Feb 15-18) which is Asia’s most influential airshow held every two years for high-level government and military delegations and senior corporate executives from leading international aerospace companies. About 10,000 are expected to attend the trade show during its four-day run.

Top executives of Cebu Pacific welcomed journalists and trade visitors during the A330neo aircraft visit that was held today. “It is important for us to offer value service to our passengers and do it in a sustainable manner. The A330neo is a testament to our commitment to environmental and social sustainability, in line with our target of operating an all-Neo fleet by 2027,” said Mike Szucs, Chief Executive Adviser at Cebu Pacific. The A330neo’s 459-seat availability allows more travelers to be carried in a single flight, resulting in the lowest carbon footprint per passenger per kilometer. This will enable CEB to operate as the greenest airline in Asia, on top of ensuring comfort over long distances through its ergonomically designed lightweight Recaro seats. The A330neo is among the quietest wide body cabins flying today in commercial aviation. This allows CEB to provide an improved overall customer experience for all. It also uses 25% less fuel than previous generation aircraft, able to consume as little as 1.4 liters per seat per 100 kilometers. This enables CEB to burn less fuel and emit less carbon, supporting the airline’s commitment to keep providing low fares for its passengers. “We are very happy for this opportunity to showcase our newest eco-plane at the Singapore Airshow. It is our honor to be the first-ever Philippine carrier chosen by Airbus to See GREENEST, page 11
