Davao to unveil new tourist police office in March

HE local government here has received additional 141 isolation beds for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases from different private and public hospitals in this city.

Dr. Ted Yu Jr., medical officer of the city health office (CHO), said in an online briefer Tuesday the additional beds were from various private hospitals, including the JR Borja General Hospital, a public hospital managed by the city government. This is in response to their recent meeting to fight the increasing number of admitted positive cases in the city. Yu said this brought the total of Covid-19 beds in the city to 661 from 520 beds previously and the primary reason why the total bed utilization rate went down to 62.17 percent. City Mayor Oscar Moreno commended the huge help and effort of the different hospitals and un-

derscored the importance of the total bed utilization rate as one of the indicators to be checked by the National Inter-Agency Task (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease for the Covid-19 classification in every area in the country. “Let’s give a big round of applause to our private and public hospitals, especially the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) for adjusting by providing additional isolation beds. We are worried if the total bed utilization rate will go to over 70 percent as this will be considered highrisk,” Moreno said. He said because our number of beds went up from 520 to 611, the perSee BEDS, page 11

From bigger chalk allowance to ‘Edukasyon Plus’, Lacson finds ways to boost PH education From the so-called “chalk allowance” for teachers to free tuition and a monthly allowance for senior high school students, Partido Reporma chairman and standard bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson will keep pushing for ways to improve the quality of Philippine education as the country’s next President. Lacson is making it a priority of his administration to add more teachers and raise their salaries, and give students more of what they need to raise the quality of education in the country, which he has already been doing as a senator since 2001. In the “Bakit Ikaw? The DZRH Presidential Job Interview” on radio last Friday, the longtime public servant admitted the huge challenge of improving the education sector amid the prevailing coronavirus pandemic, thus he pledged to add more benefits to teachers and students alike once he gains the people’s mandate following the May 9, 2022 elections.

Because their salaries are low.] The three-term senator believes that Filipino teachers won’t hope to go abroad to use their talents there and earn a better living once the education sector here improves. This is an issue he has advocated in the Senate through insertions in the national budget such as the teachers’ chalk allowance, which he successfully raised fivefold. “Ako pagka ‘yung budget deliberation, ‘yung chalk allowance lamang, ano. PRESIDENTIAL wannabe Leni Robredo just proved to the world that she is not the kind of leader the Philippines deserves. In an interview with the country’s “King” of talk show, Boy Abunda, the Vice President emphatically insisted that in times of emergencies she has to be personally on top of the situation to manage and immediately act on every emerging situation that needs prompt action. In short and by her own language she is a micromanager. Boy Abunda, who obviously understands what leadership is, tried to get her out of that slip, but she insisted that it has to be she and proceeded to cite examples of moments when she has to work 24 hours a day micromanaging actions on emergencies. Her take on the leadership qualities of a President underscores her distrust of people and that is a very dangerous precedent because the government does not function that way. I do not know whether it is true that on day one of the Marawi siege the Vice President was right in the battle arena. I think I missed that one in the many video coverage done

by local and international correspondents. Leni’s idea of leadership explains why she has to be first on the scene of calamity distributing “lugaw na may itlog” as her propagandists proudly assert. And she wants to show these acts of mercy and courage by bringing a retinue of print and TV crew. The VP should learn the art of how-not-to-do-it herself. She should learn how to delegate and therefore must learn how to trust. A President is not a Purok Chairman. He or she is on top of all situations but in every situation, he has someone he can trust to execute plans with all the resources and authority with the least supervision from him. Dangerous too is her proposition that to solve the conflicts in the West Philippine Sea, she will push for multi-lateral talks inviting community of nations..for what? To bring China to its knees? And she wants the government to invest heavily in armaments. Is she thinking that China will invade the Philippines or even create a pocket war in WPS in the eastern portion of the South China sea? China will be the last

Jun Ledesma

country to stir trouble in WPS when it is their principal trade route. That too is the trade route of other countries doing business with China, the ASEAN nations, and India to name a few. China, which has taken over the US in economic supremacy is now in the league of the superpower. In terms of road and railway infrastructures, it makes US jurassic. The man who used to pull a rickshaw will be the last person on earth to go back to poverty. Robredo and Lacson should rein-in their slingshots. Study the lead of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte that is being adopted by Bongbong Marcos. Bilateral talks. China is the biggest consumer market in the world and I think the Philippines has an avuncular space in the heart of China’s leadership. It is our nearest trading partner. So near we can ship freshly harvested fruits in just a couple of days and even ship tuna from Davao direct to Beijing. Think trade, not war.

Kim’s Dream We Are More Than Form

Consciousness, Our Essence

A human being is more than form (human – body); as a Being, he/she is eternal prior to taking a form(body). We are all embodied spirits, more spirit than body having been created in the image and likeness of God. This is a truism that must be the basis of our existence so that the development of the spirit must be the priority rather than be enslaved to the whims and caprices of the body. But the collective mindset of humanity seems just to focus on forms rather than on consciousness. It is sad to note that the present development paradigm indulges so much on unbridled materialism and consumerism which does not only run counter to the essence of our very own spirituality but can be likened to the workings of an auto-immune disease syndrome (AIDS), where no less than the body’s defense mechanisms are attacking vital organs. We decimate our forests, pollute our rivers and bays; we produce food yet contaminate our water table following costly agricultural technologies tied up to the heavy use of toxic chemicals; modern living adopting lifestyle that what makes of a throwaway-society – all done in

the name of development. As biblically stated, man is made in the image and likeness of God, the Creator. But paradoxically, it is appearing that man has reduced the essence of God to his own image. This is the reason why the world now is facing threats of war in all fronts. The egoic mindset of world leaders follows that high veneration to the ego, i.e., I am right and you are wrong and if you oppose me, there will be war! That kind of mindset can only be described as ruthless and futureless which has made the impossible now possible, which is the end of life on earth. Biodiversity embracing the billions of life forms has tremendously decreased as these life forms which have evolved on earth for billions of years are now extinct. As the earth warms and the oceans rise, we are now confronted on how to feed, clothe and house the exponentially growing earthlings that will reach the 9.3 billion mark in 2050. If our way of making a living is killing Mother Earth because it is just all about how to respond to bodily needs, that kind of mindset has totally disregarded man’s spirituality. In fact, the growth-at-all-

Orlan R. Ravanera

cost development strategy is rooted on the brutal, jungle-like philosophy of the “survival of the fittest”, “fittest” being the most aggressive, the strongest – all but physical qualities. This world is not just all physical. As embodied spirits, we must develop our spiritual qualities as these are what are the essentials when we will leap to the Great Beyond. In the world inside the womb of a mother, the fetus must develop the physical qualities as it is a sort of hell living on earth without senses or arms or feet. But the next life will not anymore be physical but consciousness or spiritual, thus, we must develop what are the essentials in the spiritual world such as love, service, intellectual prowess, patience, kindness, honesty, integrity and all the God-like qualities that qualify us to end up in the loving embrace of God. How can you end up in God’s loving embrace if all you have developed on earth is the physical devoid of love. All material wealth See ESSENCE, page 11

Quiboloy endorses Marcos-Duterte tandem By ANTONIO L. COLINA IV, MindaNews

DAVAO CIT Y – International evangelist Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy endorsed on Tuesday the tandem of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who are running for president and vice president in the May 2022 national elections. During the send-off ceremony of the “Mahalin Natin ang Pilipinas Ride” at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ Compound in Davao City streamed live over the Quiboloy-owned SMNI News Facebook page, the pastor said that he would throw support behind the Marcos-Duterte Uniteam and its senatorial slate. Quiboloy – the selfproclaimed “Appointed Son of God” who is the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above

Every Name (KOJC) – also prayed over the mayor, along with former Senator Jinggoy Estrada and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque (who are both running for the Senate under the Uniteam), before kicking off the 28-day national caravan from Davao City to Metro Manila and back. “A lot of people are asking who the Kingdom of Jesus Christ will support. I told them, ‘let us wait for the right time.’ And now is the right time to express our support – I will support 100% the Unity Team,” he said. Quiboloy is a friend and spiritual adviser of President Rodrigo R. Duterte. The President previously criticized Marcos, calling him a “weak leader” and instead supported the candidacy of his long-time

Dimaporo said the provincial government has done several strategies to encourage its residents to get vaccinated such as the distribution of 10 kilos of rice. However, the vaccination rate of the province is only 41% which is still far from herd immunity.

LDN mayors urged to convince constituents to get vaccinated TUBOD, Lanao del Norte —Governor Imelda “Angging” Quibranza Dimaporo again appealed to municipal chief executives in the province to be more active in seeking out unvaccinated people in their municipalities and convincing them to get inoculated against the coronavirus disease (Covid)-19. Dimaporo reiterated her appeal during the 1st quarter joint meeting of the Provincial Development Council (PDC), Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC), and Provincial Anti-Drugs Abuse Coun-

She further said that the reason why Lanao del Norte was placed under Alert Level 3 was due to the low vaccination rate in the municipalities. “Our cases are not as high as other provinces and cities surrounding us pero tungod lang sa low percentage sa vaccination, na dragged ang tibuok probin-

In a press release posted on US DOJ’s website on November 18, the superseding indictment issued by the Federal Grand Jury charged Quiboloy and two other defendants – KOJC’s “international administrator” Teresita Tolibas Dandan and Felina Salinas – “with participating in a conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion,

as well as the sex trafficking of children.” Maximum penalty for sex trafficking conspiracy in the US is life sentence in federal prison. The vice presidential candidate thanked the pastor for accommodating her request to stage the send-off ceremony of her team and supporters for the national caravan, a campaign which she claims seeks “patriotism or love for our country.” From Davao City, the caravan will go to Bislig in Surigao del Sur on February 1; from Bislig to Lipata Port in Surigao City and to Liloan Port in Southern Leyte on February 2. Globe customers raise P1.9M for Typhoon Odette survivors

G

LOBE customers have raised P1,925,284 worth of Globe and TM Rewards points to help survivors of Typhoon Odette, sending critical aid to families reeling from the impact of the deadly December storm. The donations have been turned over to Globe’s partner organizations — the Ayala Foundation, GMA Kapuso

Foundation, and Rise Against Hunger Philippines. Such support came at a crucial time when typhoon survivors needed life-saving aid, as Odette destroyed over 344,000 houses and damaged more than 1 million others. The destruction displaced over 58,000 families, leaving them straining for basic needs. A total of 406 people

were killed, while 1,265 were hurt and 65 remain missing. “The devastation left by Typhoon Odette called for a swift response. We are very grateful to our customers who are with us in this undertaking. The Rewards points that they donated will go a long way in helping step up humanitarian efforts to help as many people as

we possibly can,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications. Globe Rewards currently has 15 non-government organizations, charitable institutions, and foundations in its program roster, supporting several advocacies in line with the company’s vision towards national development and upliftment of lives. These include disaster relief, reforestation, child protection, hunger mitigation, education, animal welfare, marine biodiversity, mental wellness, and medical support. Through Globe Rewards, Globe and TM subscribers can provide support and malasakit to worthwhile causes in time of need within the safety of their homes. For Odette response, one of Globe’s major partners Ayala Foundation through its disaster relief and recovery efforts

under the #BrigadangAyala program continues to provide food packs in heavily affected areas in partnership with the Ayala Group of Companies. Another partner is the GMA Foundation, which provides aid through the “Operation Bayanihan” program. The organization extends immediate relief and assistance to victims of disasters and calamities nationwide. Other donation partners that extend support to disaster survivors are ABS-CBN Foundation and the Tzu Chi Foundation. To date, relief efforts led by Globe and its partner organizations have now reached over 10,000 families in Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao. With thousands of Filipinos affected by the disaster still in need of urgent help, Globe continues to send out a call for support to its customers.

Globe and TM customers can still donate their Rewards points to ongoing relief operations for as low as P1 via the New GlobeOne app at glbe.co/NewGlobeONE. Customers can go to the Rewards section, click the “DONATE” icon, choose the organization and corresponding denomination, and then press “REDEEM.” A confirmation message will be sent by 4438 upon successful donation. The company strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, highlighting the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs. To learn more about Globe, visit www.globe. com.ph.

Financial inclusion: Empowering Filipinos for a sustainable economy When people have access to bank accounts and loans, they are empowered to build their emergency funds, take part in e-commerce, make decisions to expand their businesses, and secure their future for the eventuality of retirement. – the common attributes of the juxtaposed two are: being selfish/self-centered, loving/ caring to parents, competitive with siblings (though this trait could slowly fade out into old age) and both have love-hate (or like-dislike) relationship with their peers. There are more variables but I rather pick what I just enumerated. Moving on, if we deduct adult experiences and school training, it looks like the child has a purer and more positive take on life than the adult. It is no wonder Jesus Christ himself recommended to followers to ‘be child-like’ if one wishes to enter the kingdom of heaven. For what its worth, all hopes are not lost for the mature adult. Adults need only observe how it is to be a child again. The adult must evolve, be open to possibilities, embrace fresh knowledge and new ways to think and act, adapt to the changes of the expanding future. Maybe, then maybe the adult can still make the world a better place even if humans children and adults alike are revolving around a tiny community.

oftentimes it comes from different causes. There are many reasons why discipline can be a problem in a classroom. One of the reasons could be teaching style. If a teacher is not reaching every one of the students, they can become bored, disinterested and restless. Every student has their own learning style and an area where they excel. If the teacher can reach these students by using a variety of methods, they are motivated and less likely to cause trouble. Another reason for discipline issues is that a teacher may be dealing with students with many personal problems such as poverty, broken family, abused, and others. The best way to respond to a discipline problem in the classroom is to understand the root of the issue. It needs managerial skill of the teacher to have a conducive classroom environment.

Beyond the day to day of teaching and marking, teachers are faced with students with behavioral or family issues, learning disabilities, and more. As a school administrator, keeping your teachers motivated is one of your most important roles. Our role as a school administrator is to make your teachers’ lives easier so that they can teach and your students can learn. Help your teachers as much as possible when they have a heavier workload. Consider asking your teachers what they need help with before jumping in, so that they do not feel like you are micromanaging. Make sure to also help your teachers through monotonous tasks with software tools. Moreover, if a teacher feels valued, you won’t need to worry about motivating

them. These teachers will know how to stay motivated. Making each teacher feel valued can be as simple as including an announcement in the morning thanking the teacher for something that they have done recently. You can also make this a larger gesture by organizing a staff lunch in which you personally thank teachers for outstanding contributions to the school. And of course, as the School Head, you should offer professional development for the teachers within your school, but also provide opportunities for each teacher to learn outside the school. This could include conferences, workshops, or specialized professional development offered at the district level. Approve all reasonable requests. Make sure that you are also keeping an eye out for new opportunities, and presenting these to all teachers at staff meetings.

on Monday that the construction of its building was initially eyed for completion in October 2021 but was reset several times due to changing coronavirus disease 2019 restrictions. “It was pushed further because of the pandemic but we are looking at March 2022 as the new completion date,” he said. Bacera added TPUs are being set up nationwide to ensure the safety of both foreign and domestic tourists. It was established in 2010 following a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Tourism and the Philippine National Police. Personnel under the TPU are tasked to enforce laws and ordinances relative to the protection of lives, properties, and environment in its area of responsibility; exercise the general power to arrest, detain, search and seize in accordance with existing laws; conduct regular patrol to ensure the safety and protection of both tourists and residents within his jurisdiction; coordinate with concerned police stations in monitoring and investigating all cases involving tourists, and take immediate appropriate action to resolve conflicts. “Given the current situation, the TPU has been reactivated to hasten the tourism industry’s recovery

from the pandemic,” Bacera said. The plan to complete the TPU building recommenced following a request from the city tourism office (CTO). “The TPU needs [to be highly] visible, so it will be accessible and convenient for people visiting our city. At the same time, concerns will also be resolved as immediately as possible,” CTO chief Generose Tecson told PNA in a separate interview Monday noting that it is not the first of its kind in the city. It will be the second TPU office in the city after the one established along Roxas Avenue in front of Marco Polo Davao. Tecson cited that the new office will be equipped with a tourist assistance counter. The project, which is implemented by the city engineer’s office, received an appropriation of PHP7.3 million. However, despite the increase of the isolation beds, Moreno also urged the public to not get infected by the virus by following the minimum public health standards in order to avoid admission of patients from hospitals. As of January 31, the city has 618 Covid-19 positive cases who have been admitted to different hospitals. 158 of which are currently admitted in NMMC, 79 are admitted in a Covid-19 facility in Barangay San Simon that is also under the supervision of NMMC, and 381 cases are admitted in different hospitals. On the other hand, the city’s average daily attack rate (ADAR) and the twoweek growth rate (2WGR) remain at high-risk with 38.19 percent for ADAR and 294 percent for 2WGR, Moreno said. As of January 31, the city government has reported 189 new Covid-19 cases detected, bringing the total to 23,467 cases; of which 2,381 are active, 20,211 are already recovered and 875 have died. Yu also urged unvaccinated individuals to have their shots as this will help to avoid severe cases of Covid-19 if they got infected. The city already tallied 515,027 fully vaccinated individuals. government internship program starting with senior high school students. Proving that he is an action man not just against crime and corruption, Lacson successfully pushed for the establishment of an integrated elementary and high school on Pag-Asa Island in Palawan, following his push for the government to provide more funding for the facility. This benefited Filipinos living in the country’s outpost in the West Philippine Sea, which the Partido Reporma bet visited last November in his capacity as chairman of the Senate defense committee. Despite threats sent over radio from the Chinese Navy, which is occupying territories near Pag-Asa Island, Lacson fearlessly proceeded to the outpost to learn the situation of Filipinos living on the island and consult them on their needs so he could include them in his Senate program.
