3 Covid-19 deaths unvaxxed, Davao health official warns By CHRISTINE CUDIS

DAVAO C I T Y – T he city government issued a warning anew to those who remain unvaccinated, citing three recent deaths from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) involved individuals who chose not to get the jabs. Data from the City’s C ov i d - 1 9 Task Forc e showed the deaths occurred from May 22 to 28. Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the task force’s spokes-

person, said two of them were senior citizens and the third was an adult. “ T he y a l l suf fe re d from the severe type of Covid-19 and, since they were unvaccinated, they were not protected from the severity of the disease,” Schlosser said over the Davao City Disaster Radio on Thursday. With the city put under a more relaxed alert level, she said an added layer of protection is highly necessary as more people are

now outdoors and at the threat of being exposed to the virus. “After six months, the protection from the vaccine wanes so the booster jabs are also highly recommended. To those who did not even avail of any vaccination from Covid-19, the level of protection is zero,” she said. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the vaccines, Schlosser noted senior citizens with a severe type of Covid-19

managed to survive as they were fully vaccinated and received booster doses. As of May 22, t he city’s first-dose vaccinees reached 1,333,259 while second-dose vaccinees numbered 1,315,112 as of May 27. Of the fully vaccinated population, however, the city only logged 262,490 who received first booster shots while 12,891 have obtained second booster jabs. (PNA)

The Modular Learning in West City Central School By: HERMIE ISRAEL JACQUEZ

The unexpected COVID-19 Pandemic has closed schools and shifted the mode of learning to modular and online learning in West City Central School, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. The use of digital and distance learning have become the source of delivering learning to all pupils enrolled in school. Modular Learning caters most to the needs of learning by printing modules and distributing to parents every week. It was tedious and laborious to the part of teachers for they have spent a lot of time and energy to print and sort modules for the learners. The classroom and the home had become the place for printing and sorting. The job of a teacher has shifted to being a printing press production. Some people said that teachers are doing nothing in the classroom because of the absence of pupils. But it is exactly the opposite because

printing, sorting, checking distributing and encoding are some of the works that could keep the teachers busy in the classroom. Family members have helped also to ease the burden of the teacher. Aside from modules, teachers have created digital worksheets as an enrichment for learners. The teachers explored knowledge in digital media to keep pace with the modality of learning in modular. Activity Sheets are made by teachers for both fast and striving learners in different category to cater their needs. The woes of teachers were some modules are answered by parents and older siblings that could not really help the learners. May this coming school year we could have face to face classes so teachers could really teach in person the students who quenched for knowledge with the assistance of teachers.

THE HEALING POWER OF WRITING

A Teachers Love in times of Pandemic BLESSEL M. MATOS

Year 2020 up to the present year have never been easy to us. The whole world including the Philippines have been inflicted with an invisible enemy called “Covid-19”. All people around the globe suffered too much from this pandemic. Hundreds and hundreds of people were declared casualties. Moreover, a lot of people have expressed their help and love for those who are affected the most. The Department of Education also expressed their love for learners through continuing effort to provide better and quality education for the learners amidst pandemic. No matter how dangerous it is for the health and family, still, the teachers manage to do their part in imparting knowledge and honing learners’ morale at this time of crisis. Different learning modalities have been adapted just to suit to the different learning needs of the learners. Teachers have burned their midnight candles to fast track

the making and distribution of modules on time. They are readily available 24/7 to cater the queries and needs of learners and their parents. Truly, teachers gave their all and offered their best to comply and provide the things that learners need to acquire. Teachers even allotted a little of their salary to donate basic necessities to their learners and to other people who need help. All of us is enduring in this time of pandemic, but there are teachers who chose to help and share a little of their time and monetary. Teachers have always been considered as one of the unsung heroes. They remain humble and continue to give and provide their assistance and help not just to the learners but to other people as well. In this catastrophe, we visibly see the countless effort, love and care of the teachers for their learners. My snappy salute to all the teachers, truly, your dedication and commitment are tag priceless and precious.

this current health crisis; it is more likely that people will feel low, down in the dumps, stuck in a rut, or just plain stressed out. When we fall on hard times, we usually struggle to get back to our equilibrium. But to some, getting back to their equilibrium means seeing a therapist. Others opt to start a new career or move to a new place. And for the literary-minded or the creative folks, getting better typically begin with art. Drawing, painting, listening to music, and interpretative dance are some of the ways art can be integrated into spiritual healing and emotional growth. Now, new research suggests that expressive writing can also help people heal from stresses and traumas. It is proven to be therapeutic because writing cultivates our ability to observe our thoughts and emotions. And the good news is, you don’t have to be a prolific writer or even a writer at all to benefit from writing therapy. All you need is a pen, a piece of paper, and the motivation to write. Courtney E. Ackerman, in her blog, mentioned five writing exercises that anyone could try, these include: writing a letter to yourself, writing letters to others, writing a poem, free writing – just write everything that comes to mind, and mind mapping - drawing mind maps with your main problem in the middle and branches representing different aspects of your problem. Moreover, it is also recommended to schedule a particular time of the

be everyday, but you should aim for fifteen minutes three to four days a week. Aside from time, find the right place where you wanted to write. It could be in your room, in the library or in a coffee shop. The important thing is, it is a quiet place. In addition, when you write, do not edit yourself. Do not hesitate to write whatever is on your mind. In that way, you can easily have access to your feelings and you can simply heal. Being so cautious of the things that you will write will only hinder you from evaluating your thoughts and feelings. So, let it go. Finally yet importantly, reread what you have written. Just think of the many benefits of writing therapy which includes helping improve memory, record important bits and pieces of the day, and helps people feel relaxed at the end of a long day. Recent studies likewise suggested that expressive writing can improve the immune system functioning. And if done regularly, writing can also help the writer find meaning in their experiences, “view things from a new perspective, and see the silver linings in their most stressful or negative experiences”. And surely, some of us think that writing is only for writers. But that is incorrect. Writing is for all of us. It might be difficult to get started, but the first step is always the hardest. As per this quote, “No one can tell your story, so tell it yourself. No one can write your story, so write it yourself.”

THAT’S what Christ urges us to be. (cfr. Mt 24, 42-51) “Stay awake,” he said, “For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” These words clearly are an appeal for us to be watchful, vigilant and on guard always. Later on, he said, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time?” These words can only imply that we have to productive and faithful to our duties. To properly motivate us in this regard, let us always be clear about what the real purpose of our life is, for which we have to be vigilant and productive. We should avoid being lulled and trapped in the dynamic of our earthly concerns without relating them to our life’s ultimate goal. We need to be vigilant always, in good times and in bad times, and most especially in ordinary times which we still would not know whether it would be good or bad. We should never let our guard down. This is simply because we have enemies to contend with all the times. First of all, it is our own selves, our own weakened flesh that

will always lure us to do things against God’s will and against what is truly good for us. Then we have the world with all its sinful attractions and temptations. And, of course, the devil himself. Never discount him. He’s always around, prowling like a lion looking for someone to devour. (cfr 1 Pt 5, 8) In what may seem to be good times, when things are more or less ok, let us thank God and do our best to make use of all the blessings and good opportunities made available for us. But let’s not forget that the good things can also occasion dangers for us if we are not careful. We should know where those dangers lie in the good things that we may enjoy at the moment. In that way, we avoid falling into complacency that will practically spoil us, and take away the goodness of the blessings we are enjoying. And in what may seem to be bad times, let us never forget to look for the one good thing in those situations. There will always be one or two or even more good things on these occasions and turn them into the vehicles for our redemption. Everyday, we should also be keenly aware that we need

Roy Cimagala

to be fruitful and productive. That’s simply because even from the beginning of our creation in Adam and Even, this has always been God’s will for us. “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it,” (Gen 1, 28) God told our first parents, clearly outlining his mandate to them. It’s a mandate that continues to be repeated up to now. Christ himself said as much. In his parable of the three servants (cfr Mr 25, 14-30), a master clearly told each one to trade with the amount given to them. He was happy with the first two who gained as much as was given. But he was mad at the third one who did nothing with the amount given. We have to realize that God has already given us everything that we need, not only to survive but also to improve our lot that ultimately translates into realizing the fullness of our dignity as image and likeness of God, as children of his.

Letters from Davao

Meanwhile in Davao City HUGPONG ng Pagbabago ruled over in the just concluded elections. But what else will one expect? Except in the mayoral race where former congressman Ruy Elias Lopez challenged Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, While social activist Magz Maglana tested a bid for a congressional seat against incumbent Rep. Paolo “Polong” Duterte, everything else was bland and uneventful. Both Lopez and Maglana have the name but hardly do they have a perceptible political organization. They faced a formidable HnP chaired by Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte. In fact, everybody who wants to be somebody in elective government posts gravitated toward the regional party. And because there is hardly an organized political opposition in this southern capital the HnP members slug it out among themselves agreeing to a pact: “may the best man …and woman win”. There is no truth that only a Duterte is heir to a post vacated by a Duterte. City councilors whose three terms had lapsed had their sons and daughters run and handily won. There are extremely lucky ones too. The Vicemayor elect, Melchor Quitain Jr., son of the legal officer and speechwriter of

Pres. Rodrigo Duterte (yes, he has one) ran unopposed. The other is re-electionist House Deputy Speaker and District 3 Rep. Sid Ungab. The demise of opposition in Davao City can be a cause of concern. While the leadership and integrity of the Duterte are held high it can lead to ennui in the government bureaucracy. And it can be infectious. Mayor Inday Sara’s landmark project, the underground laying of power and communications cables, was so slow nobody seemed to mind the diggings done on the main city roads that have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and kangkong plantations. The langour also invites abuse. When the City Council invited DPWH, PLDT, and the power company to a council probe over the unconscionable delay of the project, the response was lackadaisical. Good thing there are still members of the City Council, like Pilar Braga, who had the guts to haul them before the legislative body and force them to action. Braga barely made it in the last polls. This time we hope that under the leadership of Baste, the City Council will initiate a probe into why the city traffic lights stopped operating. Again, for a number of months, nobody seemed

to mind. The opposition before was led by the late House Speaker Prospero Nograles. He had attempted to diminish the popularity of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and of Inday Sara but to no avail. He created monstrous issues like extrajudicial killings and attributed these to nonexistent Davao death squads. “Nogie” filed a number of alleged corruption issues before the Ombudsman but not one prospered. He wanted to be mayor but he lost even to Sara in her first foray to be Mayor of Davao City. Fast forward, in a supreme irony, Nogie’s son Karlo was later appointed as Cabinet Secretary and Presidential Spokesman. Thus, whatever is left in a fragmented opposition in Davao City had been totally expunged. And so here we are. Inday Sara will take her oath as Vice President of the Philippines on June 19. That’s the birthday of our National Hero Jose Rizal. The venue will be in Davao City. President-elect Bongbong Marcos has nominated See DAVAO, page 11

CHR backs bills solving plights of indigent seniors, poll workers By LADE JEAN KABAGANI

MANILA – The head of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said Thursday the passage of bills seeking to double the monthly pension of indigent senior citizens and grant income tax exemption to poll workers would address the plight of the vulnerable sectors. CHR Executive Director Jacqueline Ann de Guia said the proposed measures would help alleviate the financial constraints among the vulnerable populations, hence the commission’s “strong support” for Senate Bills 2506 and 2530 approved by the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The House adopted the measure granting a raise on the social pension of poor senior citizens to PHP1,000 from the current PHP500. It also adopted a bill on the exemption from income tax of honoraria, allowances, and other financial benefits received by teachers who served in the recently concluded May 9 elections. The Senate passed both

proposed measures on Monday. “Once enacted into law, the said bill is expected to help alleviate the financial concerns that beset indigent senior citizens while also concretely honoring the hard work of poll watchers,” de Guia said. “CHR believes that this initiative would provide the elderly a more sustainable allowance as the prices of goods and medicines continue to rise.” She lauded the passage of Senate Bill 2506, which “manifests respect to the rights of the elderly” and recognizes their “rights to attain dignified aging.” The proposed law also transfers the distribution of the monthly payment from the Department of Social Welfare and Development to the National Commission of Senior Citizens within three years after its effectivity. “CHR equally appreciates the tax exemption for the teacher-poll watchers for this serves as a tangible incentive to honor

MANILA – Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Thursday he has given the green light for the relief of the chief of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Investigation and Assessment Center, pending an internal investigation over an alleged Guevarra anomalous operation. Guevarra confirmed that he had been consulted before Victor Lorenzo’s relief, saying he “will leave (NBI officer in charge) Eric Distor to determine Lorenzo’s assignment pending investigation.” “(T)his, I believe, is standard operating procedure whenever any NBI official or agent is under investigation by the internal affairs division in order to preserve the evidence and preclude any undue influence during the investigation. RPMS/PPST community linkages By ANAMARY L. DELA PIÑA Teacher III West City Central School

IN line with the new professional standards for teachers, the Department of Education (DepEd), through the Teacher Education Council (TEC), issues this DepEd Order entitled National Adoption and Implementation of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). The DepEd recognizes the importance of professional standards in the continuing professional development and advancement of teachers based on the principle of lifelong learning. It is committed to supporting teachers, and taking cognizance of unequivocal evidence that good teachers are vital to raising student achievement. Quality learning is contingent upon quality teaching. Hence, enhancing teacher quality becomes of utmost importance for long term and sustainable nation building. The changes brought about by various national and global frameworks such as the K to 12 reform, ASEAN integration, globalization and

the changing character of the 21st century learners necessitate the improvements and call for the rethinking of the National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS); hence, the development of the PPST. The PPST aims to set out clear expectations of teachers along well-defined career stages of professional development from beginning to distinguished practice; engage teachers to actively embrace a continuing effort in attaining proficiency; and apply a uniform measure to assess teacher performance, identify needs and provide support for professional development. The PPST shall be used as a basis for all learning and development programs for teachers to ensure that teachers are properly equipped to effectively implement the K to 12 program. Opportunities Masked in Challenges by JENNIFER S. EGUIA Master Teacher I City Central School

The Pandemic has become the most significant challenge in the Philippine education system. It has brought about opportunities masked in never before encountered intricacies with the learning setup. It transformed a physical classroom into an online one that made the interchange of ideas possible using technology to bridge the gap between distance learning. And in this matter, the intellectual and character growth of the student has been critical. In using the virtual setup, the issue of whether the quality of education is upheld, honing each student’s logical and moral compass. But the teachers and students alike fought through and have emerged victorious. And as we transition to face-to-face classes, the teaching dynamics and instruction materials have been amplified. They are seen as a vital opportunity that every learner and teacher can access to propagate learning despite the Pandemic. In this regard, teachers immersed themselves in equipping their arsenal as implementors. They used available

technology to bridge the gap of the lack of physical presence and transcend learning through virtual interchange between learners. It paved the way to discover various features of online applications and tools, such as Google Productivity Tools, Zoom and Google Meet Virtual Conferencing, Microsoft Office, and the utilization of the internet as the primary medium to interact with learners at the very space of their own homes. Furthermore, it initialized the formulation of Standardized Learning Modules collaborated by the Department of Education, School Heads, and Teachers to supplement and become the driving force to aid students with their learning experience. We now see the advantages of module learning about the online setup and seek to find the correlation between maximizing technological opportunities to amplify the urgency of Standardized Modules in again transitioning to faceto-face learning that will become more responsive to the uncertainties of the future this Pandemic comes to an end.

De Guia said the proposed bill exemplifies Article II, Section 9 of the Constitution to enact policies that would help ensure a better standard of living for all. “It is also in line with the social justice and human rights provisions of the Constitution that tasks the government to uplift the lives of the common people to ensure equity,” she added. The CHR called for the “swift passage” of the proposed bills to “ensure that indigent seniors and poll workers” can immediately enjoy the benefits “given the rising cost of goods and services.” “We look forward to similar equal efforts that will alleviate the plight of vulnerable sectors,” de Guia said. Both bills are now up for the signature and approval of President Rodrigo Duterte. (PNA)

novators and AboitizPower mentors were consulted. “All of these exciting activities were done in just 10 weeks, thanks to the team’s demonstration of agile execution,” said Balita in her closing remarks. ExO CEO and Sprint Head Coach Emilie Sydney-Smith congratulated the participants for completing the program and for successfully pitching their audacious innovation projects. “What you see here are ideas that are genuinely able to make a difference and are thought through in terms of what the return on investment might be,” she said. Education Stakeholders Welcome Expanded Limited Face to Face Classes By: HONEYMAE L. CAÑETE School Principal II Pikalawag Integrated School

Perceived as a result of the successful pilot implementation in schools nationwide, the expanded limited face-to-face classes was approved with high confidence by President Rodrigo R. Duterte. This was largely lauded by education stakeholders throughout the country according to DepEd (Department of Education) sources. DepEd further stated that learners, teachers and parents expressed satisfaction that during the implementation of expanded limited face-to-face classes there was no incidence of Covid-19 infection. even with high attendance and classroom performance. In our local observation, stakeholders were confident of the learners safety against Covid -19 virus because of strict and efficient enforcement of health and safety protocols.. “Stakeholders also welcomed the implementation because it developed “a culture of shared responsibility among the national government, parents and learners, the local government units (LGUs), teachers, school officials and staff, and other stakeholders in ensuring everyone’s safety and welfare,” the DepEd said. The Philippine News Agency (PNA) in a report, said thet “the DepEd also thanked the Department of the Interior and Local Government for encouraging LGUs to support limited in-person classes and the Inter-Agency Task Force

for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases for developing a responsive operational guideline on face-to-face learning delivery.” It was learned that no less than Education Secretary Leonor Briones recommended the progressive expansion of limited face-to-face classes in areas that were even placed under Alert Levels 1 and 2.. Thus, education stakeholders opined that students who attend limited face-to-face classes must have medical insurance to cover hospital expenses in treating COVID-19-related cases. The learners should also strictly follow health and safety protocols of their schools and honestly declare the health conditions of their family members. .They should strictly implement the minimum physical distance of 1.5 meters among the school and classroom crowd. Personal hygiene of the learners must be encouraged by parents and teachers. Health and safety protocols must be observed in classrooms, libraries and all school facilities. especially during breaktime periods. The implementation of the expanded limited face-to-face classes shows a positive sign that education is getting back to its normal way. It significantly projects our resilience in providing education even amid adversities, such as thre Covid-19 pandemic, and other public disturbances.

Why Teachers Need To Keep Going Amidst the Challenge of Pandemic ROSALIE G. ABEJUELA Teacher I-Dampil Elementary School

Later in 2019 COVID banged the door and resolutely bolted the world from all course of normal life. It disturbed everyone’s focus, ruined the business sectors and interrupted educational system altogether. Majority of the globe was being affected in the normalcy of instructional endeavors and its continuity considering the given situation at hand. It underwent into crucial discussions comprising of several leaders among nations. Many schools that have re-operational faced another concern into considerable provocations of social distancing, rigorous disinfection, and the careful adaptation of all movement around the school relating to the test of time. While schools that are about to open are wedged in the media limelight of whether it is secure or practical to do so. The argument around the continuity, or in contrast, the closing of schools is uptight, disruptive, and largely questionable. Unpredictably, lengthy, how the intensity, the magnitude of its ill effects of opening schools in the current pandemic might prove to be, but it is clear that the mental health of the human population who feel stuck or secluded at home is a very tough matter and likely to become a major problem than the virus itself. In this time of confusion where rapid answers are required in an evolving global, the priority must be the well-being of leaders who are the cream of the crop, the safety of educators who are in the battlefield with an unseen enemy, the welfare of learners, parents, and all stakeholders involved in

the continuity of school operational system. Why teachers need to keep going amidst the challenge of pandemic? A lot of ideas come in to rebut the issue. But personally, it is because they are chosen to serve as written from the bible in (Matthew 22:14) “many are called, but few are chosen”. Teachers are certain group of individuals who know no gender, color, background and the like. They are entitled to do their job with utmost dedication and integrity with less supervision. They are not machine-made nor battery operated beings. They also have a life to take care about and a family to feed and nourish. Yet, their anxiousness is being compensated with strong faith and belief to the power of impermanence that everything too shall pass. Many of them received side comments to be one of the lucky workers who are paid even without coming to school. Bullied in social media platforms with the same sentiments, however managed to be composed and acted professionally even if they have a lot to say in mind. They chose to be silent for their own solitude and peace. Behind every bulk of self-learning materials (SLM) is a teacher who humbly and accidentally hurt himself from staple wires. Behind every passing grades from four (4) academic quarters is a teacher who constantly calling, texting, and chatting parents to inject intervention and follow ups in order to address a failing status of certain learner. Behind every graduate, is a teacher who walks gracefully from school to learners’ residence and vice versa to deliver his services to the public. Instead of mocking our teachers, why not pray for them instead in order for them to be more blessed. Praying for others can never get you wrong. It will certainly give you good returns. May each of us be like our teachers. They get vulnerable at times but you cannot find them giving up.

the Army’s 602nd Infantry Brigade commander, said an operation was immediately launched against the suspects after reports confirmed their presence in Barangay Dungguan, M’lang, North Cotabato. “A 30-minute firefight ensued before the rest of the terror group withdrew,” Gonzales said in a statement.

Government troops recovered an M16 rifle, 41 rounds of M16 ammunition, and an improvised explosive device at the encounter site. Citing intelligence information, Gonzales said the suspects were involved in the recent Koronadal Yellow Bus bombing, the Tacurong bombing, the bomb attacks in M’lang and

Online learning By MIA PIA G. CAMOHOY Teacher I Kauswagan Central School

ONE of the many changes Covid-19 brought those in education was an almost immediate switch to online learning. Overnight, DepEd scrambled to keep education moving while bridging the physical distance between teacher and student. Traditionally trained teachers made valiant efforts to adjust to digital by recording lessons, posting videos and creating breakout rooms using whatever technology they had available. Online learning isn’t new and lessons can be drawn from existing research and experience. The experience of online pioneers highlights four distinct aspects of online learning that must stick post-pandemic: learning to learn online, designing online teaching with purpose, blending space and time online

and continued disruption with AI. The pandemic highlighted that one size fits all educational approaches fail to address student needs. Younger learners may seek physical spaces to promote socialization with supervision and teacher-led content delivery. Others value the convenience of connecting with classmates and teachers online during their times of choosing. Common inequities like poor access to the Internet, lack of financial resources and digital incompetence plague online learning. However, online education offers access for students facing geospatial barriers to traditional classrooms and further issues of inequality are addressed via multi-modal distance education.

Good leadership: earned and worked By MARY JOY F. EDUSMA Teacher I Dimaluna Elementary School District 9 Ozamiz City Division

AS the workplace evolves to become more trustworthy, transparent, ethical, collaborative and mindful of its employee needs – leaders must be equally diligent to earn respect from their colleagues. Being the leader doesn’t mean that you have earned respect. Too many leaders take their titles and authority for granted. Some leaders believe that they are owed and/or command some level of (unearned) respect just because of where they are positioned on the organizational chart. Today’s workplace – highly influenced by millennials and embedded with people that have trouble trusting others – requires proof of performance before

respect is earned. As such, leaders must reset their state of mind and become more responsible with their actions and accountable for the effect their influence has on their employees and the organization as a whole. Leaders must become more engaged by rollingup their sleeves and getting their hands dirty, rather than expecting others to always do it for them. Leaders need to become more mindful of how they are leading others and how they are being perceived as they sit in the corner office. Leaders need to focus on earning respect from others every day and stop making the same bad decisions.

Need to build resilience in education sector By MILYN N. REBUTA, Teacher I Catadman Elementary School Division of Ozamiz City

DIGITAL capabilities and the required infrastructure must reach out to the remotest and poorest communities to facilitate the students to continue their education during such emergencies as the pandemic. There is a need to deploy public funds to ensure that all students are able to learn digitally. The quality of education depends on the available infrastructure. During the pandemic, this got underlined as the required Internet connectivity was just not available. Internet connectivity continues to be unreliable as well as expensive for the underprivileged students to gain access to. In addition, many children from a less fortunate back-

ground do not have access to desktops or laptops, allowing them to take part in online courses. Consequently, this technology is not available to many students in the country. It is essential that in the future, there is a well thought-out contingency in place for any such emergency. In the world today, access to technology and Internet is an urgent requirement. The sooner it is introduced at the school level, the better it is. This means that the digital capabilities and the required infrastructure must reach out to the remotest and poorest communities to facilitate the students to continue their education during such emergencies as the pandemic.

Aleosan towns in North Cotabato. They have also been linked to the bombing of the Rural Tours Bus in Parang, Maguindanao, recently. Gonzales said the extortion group is led by Dawlah Islamiya commander Al-

moben Camen Sebod and Omal Kamsa, a member of the BIFF-Karialan faction. Brig. Gen. Eduardo Gubat, the Army’s acting 6th Infantry Division commander, vowed to pursue the group “until they will be neutralized.” (PNA)

Financial Management in the Lens of a Government Teacher By: JOHNSON RUBELLE M. ACOL-ACOL

20th of March 2016, I took up my Licensure Exam for Teachers. One of the questions said, “What is the oldest bank in the Philippines?” This was not tackled during my review sessions. I was just focused on professional education, general knowledge, and my major: social science. I was surprised that after graduating with my degree in Business Administration majoring in 2011, I would still come across such a question. I was assigned by PRC to take a major in Social Science and yet I could not even answer a question relating to the history of financial management in the Philippines. We know that Datus before have several slaves. Slaves before are regarded as possessions, never as persons. These slaves can be sold to whoever can afford the price in exchange for a roll of silk, containers of rice, or carcasses of animals. Aliping Namamahay can buy out his freedom if he can afford the price. These slaves can own possessions and are paid for their services by the Maharlikas. The Datus are protecting their sovereign by paying warriors. Pre-colonial Filipinos have been transact-

ing to foreign traders for exquisite items that are not locally produced. With the advent of the K-12 program of the Department of Education, students under the ABM Strand can now study Business Finance. The department wanted to target the financial literacy thrust of the administration. However, it is no secret to everyone that most Filipinos are living below the poverty line. Most students cannot even complete an entire day of class because they would tend to work in the afternoon for a living. *** The reason I became a teacher is to educate the youth so they could be free from the intergenerational poverty their families are in. I want to show my students that in every problem, it is not enough to find the right answer, it is to weigh which is the best. Also, I completed my academic records for a Master in Business Administration degree because I want to have a better understanding of my craft as a Filipino-Business teacher to give more to my students. With the question in the Licensure Exam, I answered Bank of the Philippine Islands.

Parents’ Lack of Knowledge of Their Kids’ Lessons ALOHA U. AGOT Manticao Central School

Parents throughout the Philippines have been forced into a role they never expected by the coronavirus pandemic, they are now their child’s teacher. With different job pressures and resources at home, families responses have varied. Some have but their children on school schedules to give them a semblance of normally while other are reluctant to require too much school work, afraid of elevating their child’s stress level. S ome p arents have scoured the internet for resources and supplemented lessons. Others with fewer resources and limited time to wait for schools to provide direction. Many struggle to teach some subjects and have no idea how to evaluate their child’s progress. It’s really challenging to parents because they have thought that aside from being a parent and a provider, they are a teacher to their own children as well. They worry about the things teachers know that parents don’t such as how to assess whether their children are working at the appropriate level or

whether they are struggling with the work or progressing. There has been disagreement among parents about whether children should be put on a regular school schedule to keep their lives normal as possible during school shutdown, or whether they should be given little work to avoid stress. We read a lot about what parents lack, especially parents of color who live in poverty. Parental involvement is important, but how is it fair to ask these parents to do more? Especially since these are the same groups who are more likely to have less formal education. Improving parental capacity to support the academic success of their children sounds like a great idea in theory. But practically speaking, how is that supposed to work? It’s hard enough for teachers of learners in low-income areas to improve learning outcomes. In the big picture, what type of policy shifts to happen to make a sustainable change to the way we support parets as our children’s most important educators?

In the meantime, friends and admirers of PRRD, who have not seen him for almost six years are looking forward to meeting and hobnobbing with private citizen Duterte again. True, he comes home to Davao quite frequently in the course of his presidency, but we hoi polloi never had the chance of meeting him. He is virtually incommunicado in his old bungalow (where once Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited) with layers of presidential security guards one has to pass through it is simply impossible to get to President Duterte. PSG will still be detailed to him and as usual, will still be on their toes. He just made a pledge that he will continue running after drug syndicates. town of 44,000 voters, east of Misamis Oriental, is the home of the “Padayon Pilipino” where the Emano patriarch first served as town Mayor in 1980 to 1986 before becoming provincial governor in 1986 to 1995. Since 1986, the Emanos’ took turns in running the affairs of Tagoloan until an unknown political opposition, Gomer Sabio, wrestled the mayoral throne from Mayor Heckert Hernando Emano in 2019 with a margin of less than 1,000 votes. Sabio’s victory over the Emanos’ in Tagoloa sent political ripples that reverberated across Misamis Oriental. The political apprehensions that the end of the Emano era became the meat of political gossips, which exacerbated knowing that Padayon candidates also lost in the political skirmishes in Cagayan De Oro City. The May 2022 local elections, however, showcased the political mettle of the Emanos’ and the resiliency of the battle-scarred “Padayon Pilipino” political party.

DOST advanced healthcare devices benefit 42 towns in North M’nao CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Forty-two municipalities in Region 10 will benefit from the recently deployed RxBox telehealth devices in healthcare centers. These devices can reduce the overall cost of healthcare by enabling health workers to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients within rural health facilities. RxBox is a multi-component program (biomedical device, electronic medical record system, and telemedicine training) designed to provide better access to life-saving health care services in isolated and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Following its deployment, residents in the recipient municipalities can access the device’s features, such as Blood Pressure Monitor, Pulse Oximeter, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Fetal Heart Monitor, Maternal Tocometer, and Temperature Sensor. DOST-10 conducted a series of deployment and Super User training for doctors, nurses, midwives, Congressman-elect Emano’s first cousin Saysay Emano was also reelected as provincial board member in Misamis Oriental’s Second District. Aside from Nadya Emano, 44, who successfully took back Tagoloan town, her younger sister Yvy Emano, 31, garnered the highest votes as City Councilor – elect of the Cagayan de Oro City Council. The activities started last year in Bukidnon, October 21, then continued this year, March 25 in Lanao del Norte, March 30 in capital city of Cagayan de Oro. The “Padayon Pilipino,” (Pilipinos Move On) an accredited indigenous regional political party, was founded by “Dongkoy” Emano in 1986 to become a formidable political party, that lord over the local political battle field from 1986 until 2013. The Padayon Pilipino weakened the more with the demise of the Emano patriarch in 2016. However, with Misamis Oriental Gov. Emano at the helm, the political organization remained intact and resilient

Shell’s Sulong Sining challenges young Filipino artists to forge the future ahead THE logo for the 55th Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) was designed by Gerard Lynn Mara Santos, first place winner in the 54th NSAC’s Digital Fine Arts Category. The Filipino Jeepney symbolizes Philippine history and the Filipino ingenuity to move forward. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation launched its 55th National Students Arts Competition (NSAC) in its continuing bid to encourage the use of art to inspire nation-building. Aptly themed Sulong Sining, this year’s Shell NSAC challenges the Filipino youth to take the lead in directing the country towards a brighter tomorrow through their art. By combining ‘Sulong’ which means charging forward, and ‘Sining’ meaning art, Pilipinas Shell encourages them to share their creative talents and showcase the bright future that they envision through their art. Serge Bernal, Pilipinas Shell Vice President for Corporate Relations described NSAC in its 55th year as “the start of an exciting new chapter … A legacy founded on promoting Filipino art

unique, creative voices of the student artists of the nation.” Ayala Museum Director Marlies Gustilo emphasized the theme’s relevance, “Sulong Sining is very encouraging with fervent hopes to motivate our young artists to learn, grow, and share that talent through this chosen medium. The theme aptly demonstrates our resilience as well as culture bearers and guardians surviving the many challenges, we all face during the pandemic.” Association of artists Created in 1951, Shell NSAC has served as a platform for young Filipino visual artists, celebrating their accomplishments and talents by nurturing them through the competition. It has also led to the creation of countless masterpieces about different compelling and important subjects, with students submitting thematic art in a variety of mediums every year. The competition has allowed young Filipino artists to have more opportunities in the local and international art scene, developing them further as creative talents and individuals. The launch event’s panel discussion featured industry veterans and artists from previous Shell NSACs who detailed their experiences and inspirations for aspiring artists. Acting as judges in this year’s competition,

their participation heralds the formation of the Shell NSAC Alumni Association, calling participants of previous competitions over the past 55 years to form a community that will support Shell NSAC’s past, present, and future generations. NSAC alumni over the years include legendary masters such as Ang Kiukok, Ben Cabrera, Angel Cacnio, Jose Joya, and Federico Alcuaz. Nestor Vinluan, a recipient of the 1974 CCP Thirteen Artists Award, described the importance of joining an art contest: “[You] put yourself into a challenge, it’s not about winning, it’s more about the participation. I always tell my former students to be like a child again when doing their art. Be open- minded, look at things freely and imaginatively, though still being serious and honest with your work.” Gino Bueza, grand prize winner for the Oil/Acylic category for the 40th NSAC, affirmed this part of the artist’s journey: “Never-ending yung learning. Patuloy ang practice ng craft, tumitingin kung ano ang interesting na ilagay sa artwork, at magdiscover ng truth, hindi lang sa labas, sa sarili din.” (Learning is never-ending. It’s constantly practicing the craft, constantly looking at what is interesting to put into the artwork, and discovering truth, not just on the outside, but within myself as well). Storytelling for today Multi-award-winning artist Edgar Fernandez pointed out recent developments that have made artists grow even more: “Everybody is joining in to synergize concepts... This time, mas high-tech yung artists ngayon in terms of how to proceed with these issues.” (This time, the artists are more high-tech now in terms of how to proceed with these issues.) Charlie Co, co-owner of the Negros-based Museum Orange Project, summed up how NSAC can prepare today’s artists for tomorrow’s changes and challenges: “Shell can nurture and make them become mature on See CHALLENGES, page 11
