PH security force pledges safe, secured 2022 elections By CLAIRE GIGJE

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur -- As this year’s national and local elections draw near with its date set on May 9, the security force of the country assured that they will be in the frontline so that everyone may have safe and secured voting. locality in safeguarding the ballots. As such, he once again affirmed his commitment, on behalf of the entire armed forces, that they will faithfully perform their duties and responsibilities delegated by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), and work hand-in-hand with the law enforcement agencies to guarantee the orderliness and sanctity of elections while they will remain impartial with the existing political parties. “Umasa kayo na mananatiling tapat at walang kinikilingan ang Armed

Global Economy of Death Vs. Economies for Life

IN our age, “have or have not” has mutated into “live or live not.” This is so because the regime of one percent that is controlling the world’s economy whose tremendous wealth is bigger than the combined assets of the ninety-nine percent of the world’s population. Are we really living in a world of abundance? If that is so, why are there still some 821 million people on earth still living in hunger and extreme poverty, who are mostly in Asia? That regime of one percent has created an “empire” that is responsible in burying humanity deeply in unbridled materialism and consumerism through neo-liberal capitalism that has given so much veneration to the profit-motive that has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and even of all religions amidst morale collapse and religious apathy. That “empire” has sacrificed Mother Earth and the people to the altar of greed and profit that is now causing the Anthropocene 6th extinction of humanity through climate change. How do we now countervail against an “empire” that has now put humanity in

the doomsday clock of “one minute before midnight?” Let us now be awakened on these painful socio-economic-ecological-political realities as so much wealth of information from the mainstream media doesn’t touch on these issues. Let me begin by sharing with you a poem that says: “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free, where the world is not broken down by narrow domestic walls, in that heaven of Freedom my Father, let my people awake!” These poetic lines by India’s greatest poet, Rabindranath Tagore, reverberated in India some four-score years ago, as the once passive nation rose up against British Imperialism and claimed its independence, not through a bloody revolution but through persistent peaceful resistance called “Satyagraha” or love-force championed by the “Father of the Nation” named Mahatma Gandhi. That Indian struggle against an empire which boast of colonizing a substantial portion of the globe thereby aptly earning the description of “an empire where the sun does not set,”

Orlan R. Ravanera

had put in clear categorical term the meaning of the slogan “El pueblo unido, no mas sera vincido” (the people united can never be defeated!) Whatever be the odds, be it against an “empire” or conditions that degrade human dignity such as dire poverty, gross inequities or social injustices, the people, at the end, would always triumph. But first they should be awakened and be capacitated to harness their collective strength, founded on a strong faith that they alone can solve their problems by resolving issues confronting their communities. In our country, whether by law, by nurture and by its nature, cooperativism readily comes into picture as the only instrument now that can put to its knees another kind of “empire” that has caused the marginalization of the people, That “empire” is the primary cause of poverty, rooted in the powerlessness of the people. That “empire” manifests itself in many ways. It could See ECONOMY, page 11

Hints and Traces

God will always forgive us NEVER doubt this truth of our Christian faith. As illustrated in that beautiful parable of the prodigal son (cfr. Lk 15,11-32), God is always ready to forgive us, no matter what sin we commit. All we have to do is just to go back to him in repentance, just like what the prodigal son did. In life, anything can happen. We try to do what is good, but sometimes our idea of what is good can actually be bad. We just have to remember that even in our worst possible scenario, we can always count on God’s ever-ready mercy as long as we decide to come home to him. We s h o u l d a l w a y s strengthen our faith in God’s mercy and compassion. Of course. We should also try not to abuse God’s goodness, even if we know that despite our best efforts we may end up abusing it just the same. But whatever happens, we should come home. Just come home to our Father God. That’s what matters in the end. We need to strengthen our spirit of divine filiation— that God is our father who is all merciful and compassionate, who is all willing to do anything for us just to get

us back to him. He knows that even if he has made us to be his image and likeness, that dignity often spoils us, and so we get into trouble. This truth about our divine filiation is worth reiterating. It is what truly grounds us to the foundation of our life and nature, giving us the meaning and purpose of our existence. It’s a source of joy, confidence and serenity. It tells us what our filial rights and duties are. More importantly, it tells us who we are and gives us an abiding sense that we are never alone, or worse, just on our own. It fills us with the conviction that we are children of God, that no matter what happens, God will always be with us and for us unless we reject him. We have to be wary of our tendency to think that we are just on our own. That would be an attitude that can be suggested only by the devil who will always tell lies. Sad to say, many people are succumbing to this trick of the devil. That’s why many now fall into some deep despair when misfortune comes their way. They feel there’s no one else to run to anymore. We should do everything to strengthen

Roy Cimagala

our spirit of divine filiation. Let’s always remember that God “takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they return from their ways and live.” (Ez 33,11) And as shown by Christ, God does not wait for man to turn back to him. He takes the initiative to reach out to us, sinners. In all the miracles that he performed, Christ was more interested in forgiving the sins of those involved than in healing them of their infirmities and predicaments. His love and compassion went beyond the concern for the bodily health of those characters. He focused more on their spiritual recovery. We have to see to it that in proclaiming the gospel to the others, in our effort to present Christ to the others, we should not simply talk about the strictness of God’s demands and expectations from us, the high standard that he is setting for us. This will scare people more than attract them to Christ. We should always include God’s mercy in all our preaching and counseling.

DAVAO CITY – The three senior citizens here who died from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) were unvaccinated, the local Covid-19 task force said Monday. The three unvaccinated senior citizens succumbed to the virus between March 13 to 19, Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the Davao Covid-19 Task Force spokesperson, said in a statement. “The casualties were severe to critical cases and required hospital care,” Schlosser said. Fully vaccinated individuals and those who received booster doses only manifest mild or no symptoms at all when they contract Covid-19, she noted. and how the entire nation worked together to overcome the challenges of the pandemicinduced global health and economic crises. “The election season will not be an issue. We have a long history of orderly and peaceful transfers of power. We will transition to the next administration (with) a comprehensive fiscal consolidation plan to bring the country back to its high growth trajectory,” he added.

With the pandemic now subsiding and the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination program proceeding at a quick pace, Dominguez said the country is well on its way to a strong recovery from the pandemic that broke out in March 2020. “Our risk management strategy culminated in a fullyear growth of 5.6 percent in 2021, exceeding target and market expectations. This year, we expect our economy to grow by 7 to 9 percent,” he said. In 2021, revenue collection was already 5 percent

higher than in 2020, while total merchandise trade and remittances were also above the pre-pandemic levels, which all signal a return to robust economic activity, Dominguez said. The DOF chief said he expects to fully bring back revenue collection to prepandemic levels this year. Moreover, the Duterte administration marked its final full year with foreign direct investments (FDIs) reaching a record-high of US$10.5 billion as it continues to gain ground in reducing unemployment,

countries in the world, it has changed the educational sector in unimaginable ways. The current situation is preventing the educational sector from performing its primary function to educate children. With recovery plans formulated to get schools on their feet, it is the school principals who are in a challenging position to lead the course of education amid the crisis. School principals cannot just go back to the educational leadership practices they

These dimensions include social dialog and communication, safety and health, psychological and social well-being, teacher preparation and learning, teacher deployment, rights and condition, financial resources and investments and monitoring and evaluation.

Face to face classes is better for learners By MARNILLIE S. JUMAO-AS, Teacher II Ozamiz City Central School Division of Ozamiz City

ZOOM meetings became so popular during the pandemic thanks to the lockdowns and social distancing mandates. After a while though, the video calls became exhausting. That’s because doing a Zoom meeting requires more mental processing than face to face interactions, according to experts. Then we started hearing about this new disease called Zoom fatigue which defined as mental exhaustion that occurs after a day of videoconferencing. Psychologists say several factors lead to Zoom fatigue. The technological hiccups – video glitches, sound issues and WiFi interference – that frequently happen during virtual meetings can disrupt our ability to interpret messages and add to our unease. Stanford University re-

searchers recently published the first peer-reviewed article on the topic which said that Zoom fatigue is real. Their findings: in-person communications make our brains happier. If adult professionals complain about Zoom fatigue after a day of videoconferencing, imagine the travails of young learners on Zoom for two years now. No wonder millions of learners and parents suddenly became awake, active, alive and enthusiastic about hearing the news that Malacañang has placed Metro Manila and 38 other areas under Alert Level 1 starting March 1. Most parents know that Education Secretary Leonor Briones has recommended to Malacañang the progressive expansion of limited face to face classes in areas placed under Alert Levels 1 and 2.

Readiness to Teaching-Learning MARIA IMELDA T. MANGARON Teacher II Salay Central School

Teachers have been preparing for classes for almost two years now. They attended webinars which were spearheaded by the Department of Education. Teachers participated in webinars such as Kotobee, which is an application to edit PDF file of learning competencies in the Most Essential Learning Competencies to a document. Teachers were oriented of the new normal learning modes in order to be ready for the class for the coming school years. They attended series of webinars which are National level, Regional level, Division or District level. They educate parents and students on how the school year will be, as it can be attributed to the Alert level set by IATF in provinces and cities. The role of teachers in the community is a great task especially in the area of assessment and support. Parents have misconceptions about enrolment system. Parents wrong conception must be addressed properly

and their queries must be answered timely. The agency has done preparations like webinars designed to educate teachers. They purchased gadgets that are useful to learners such as tablets. The Division of Misamis Oriental has provided teachers with Microsoft Office to access all programs and softwares ready for use in the new normal. DepEd prepared teachers for mental Health and Psychosocial support Services for teachers and learners in time of COVID-19. DepEd ensures that health standards are followed for all DepEd personnel. Whereas DepEd also assess the preparedness of delivery modalities in the learning continuity plan. As to the limited face to face classes, some schools are already awarded with the school safety seal from the Schools Division office and Local Government Unit to start with the Limited Face to face. be a mindset of the people that has become passive and apathetic, bombarded by gospels of materialism and consumerism that has produced a “throw-away society.” Its other name is social injustice, perpetuated by skewed socio-economic structure, putting the bulk of the people outside the development processes. Its tentacles are the greedy politicians and the Draculalike corrupt officials that sip the blood of the poor through massive corruption. That “empire’s” foot soldiers are the illegal loggers and miners that have tremendously “killed” the ecosystems and put the ecological people in extreme poverty. The “empire’s” frontliners are the transnational corporations that have converted the “blessed lands” (ancestral domains) of the Indigenous Peoples into massive plantations to satisfy the consumerist needs of the people in advanced countries while the Philippines cannot even produce enough staples for its people. If India had “Satyagraha,” the Philippines has cooperativism whose time-honored and universally-accepted principles, when in fact practiced, can be the gateway towards dismantling the people’s passive and apathetic attitude; it can be an instrument to transform an iniquitous society; it can be the path towards social transformation based on the principles of sustainable development, social justice and popular participation. Don’t you know that the Philippines is the 4th hardest hit country in the world by climate change? Yes, we have already lost our ecological integrity and food security. It is a great paradox that an agricultural country like us cannot even produce enough food for our people as some 85% of the Filipino children are malnourished, based on the data of the Food & Nutrition Institute. Thus, let us now be awakened! The wind of change is now hovering over the land – empowering the people to break the vicious cycle of poverty and nurturing the spirit to form a more formidable force to catapult us from the mundane to the sublime – all for God’s greater glory. He also expressed the importance of health to all. “Good health is the greatest gift that any parent can give to his or her child because when you are healthy you can do anything. I am glad that you are cooperating in the department’s effort for immunization, to protect our people against the hazard of COVID-19,” Llacuna said. Aside from the vaccination, the health department distributed Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA)-IP kit, senior citizen kit, wheel chair, foldable adult walker, and aluminum adjustable crutches to the community as part of their contribution to the Executive Order 70 or Whole-of-Nation Approach to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) program. Llacuna further reminded the community that immunization is the best protection against any infectious disease and they must also avail themselves of the booster dose as an added protection against COVID-19. It is also important to continue to observe the minimum health standards even though they are already vaccinated. (JAKA/ PIA-10)

It also waived the fees for business renewals especially those in the marginalized sectors. According to Uy, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) like vendors or stall owners in the public markets were also given cash assistance as their livelihoods were severely paralyzed by strict health protocols,” Uy said. The young mayor, whose parents have been prominent political figures in the province, seeks for continuity as she emphasized the need to reestablish the programs that she already started to implement in the last five years. “We started very well but the last two years have been difficult for our people when the pandemic struck, then came the implementation of the Package 3 of the TRAIN Law accelerating property tax valuation and then compounded further by the Ukraine-Russia which resulted to the spiral of petroleum products,” she pointed out. The town of Villanueva has been touted as the region’s most industrialuzed municipality hosting the country’s first and biggest economic zone, the Phividec Industrial Estate (Phividec) which houses hundreds of small and big manufacturing plants and service firms. “I need more time to rejuverate our local economy and complete our vision for a greater Villanueva,” Uy added. The focus, she said, is to reinvigorate the small and medium enterprises, provide the necessary infrastructures for sustainability and further enhance support for agri development, education, and health. While she accepts the fact that she belongs to a political clan that ruled Villanueva for decades, but the young Uy revealed that her family recognizes her being idealistic and independent-minded. “I dont have to always agree with my family in terms of political decisions I make.
