DAVAO CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry in Davao Region (DTI-11) advised consumers to be aware of the new suggested retail price (SPR) amid a surge in the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs). “We are keeping tabs on different establishments to check if their prices are still within the SRPs issued by the agency,” DTI-11 regional director Maria Belenda Ambi said in a statement on Monday. The latest SRP list covers the 218 stock-keeping units (SKUs) of BNPCs under DTI’s jurisdiction with 136 or 62 percent of them having

retained their prices based on the SRP bulletin issued on Jan. 27, 2021. Ambi said the DTI-11 has approved a minimum increase for 82 BNPCs that also include bread, canned fish, potable water in bottles and containers, processed milk, locally manufactured instant noodles, coffee, salt, laundry soap, detergent, candles, flour, processed and canned pork, processed and canned beef, vinegar, fish sauce (patis), soy sauce, toilet soap, and batteries. Briones salutes field officials’ efforts in DepEd-10’s Gawad Parangal CAMIGUIN -- Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones lauded the hard work and determination of the Department of Education (DepEd) field officials in implementing the agency’s initiatives during the Gawad Parangal Handog ng DepEd Rehiyon Diyes, April 29. “We know that the role of the field officials at the Department is significant because you are the ones implementing the policies created in the Central Office at the grassroots level. I know that civil servants also work very hard for their ranks. They stay, spend long hours giving of themselves, largely sacrificing their families, spend long nights trying to get additional degrees, and take examinations to improve their qualifications,” Briones said. Furthermore, she also noted that DepEd should celebrate the victories of

the learners and teachers in the local and international level of competition as she cited recent winners in the International Science and Engineering Fair, 12th Regional Congress “Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists, and ASEAN Quiz Regional Competition.” She likewise mentioned that public school teachers in the country were also recognized by the prestigious and worldwide award-giving body, including the Global Teacher Award and 2021 Maha Chakri Award, for their outstanding achievements in basic education and social work. “We also honor those who have spent their lives contributing their waking hours to teaching our children. We are producing globally competitive learners with the help of their parents, teachers, and communities,” Briones said. The education chief, See SALUTES, page 9

Making school eco friendly by: HAZEL N. TESOCAN T-III Gitagum Central School

When it comes to sustainability, our generation is known as the starter generation. We are only now becoming economically aware and beginning to change our habits in order to help the environment. That could indicate that we are becoming more conscientious about our modes of transportation, or that we are making a greater effort to recycle. In any case, we’re making progress toward lowering our carbon footprint. While it is wonderful that our generation is doing these things, it is critical that we adults instill an even stronger desire to help the environment in future generations. Therefore,I believe that schools should embrace the concept of “going green” and incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their daily activities. As the need to create a more environmentally friendly world becomes more pressing, school children’s awareness can be critical. Influencing children at an impressionable age can be transformative. It is critical to instill a sense of care in an environmentally conscious society by developing a habit of precaution. Consider a world 10 or 20 years from now in which we and our children would struggle to live a normal, healthy life. It would be much more difficult than it is now. We’d be fighting for our lives. There would be no one to blame but

ourselves as contributors to the dangerously polluted environment. Something must be done in light of the way climate change is affecting seasonal change. After all, it’s not wise to stand by and watch things deteriorate around us as we die as a result of a steadily polluting environment. Schools hold the key to bringing about long-term and widespread change. To encourage youngsters to engage with their environment, eco-school is an initiative that allows them to actively work for protecting it. School children feel a sense of accomplishment when they can have a say in their schools’ environmental management policies. For children, the last bell means scurrying home with their bags. Instead, teachers can devote a small class at the end of the day to cleaning the classroom and the school grounds. It is not only intended to raise environmental awareness, but it is also a fun bonding activity. Start a recycling system in your classroom and teach the kids how to use it and recycle their items. Indeed, having an Eco-School program that will embark on a meaningful path toward environmental improvement in both the school and the surrounding community. Furthermore, it has a long-term positive impact on the lives of young people, their families, schools, and local governments.

DAVAO REGION - Environmentalists are alarmed over the recent discoveries of mammoth sperm whales found dead in many shores in the Philippines. This time, a big sperm whale was again found washed up on the shores in Davao region. The 60-foot (18.29-meter in length) dead whale was among the latest discoveries as of May

21, 2022, experts reported. It was specifically found in the shore of Sitio Sakalig, Barangay Sugal in Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental. This phenomenon where e n d ange re d m am m a l s found only in high seas, are now washed up dead in seashores in different beaches in the country, as well as in many parts of the world. The Department of En-

vironment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the lifeless body of the sperm whale, which was already emitting an obnoxious smell, had “multiple wounds” and would have been dead already when it reached the seashore in Davao region. DENR’s Bagani Fidel Evasco, regional executive director of the regional office in Davao, has ordered the Penro to cordon off the

place where the big mammal was found, considering the obnoxious smell of the dead carcass. Evasco said the dead sperm whale should be disposed of immediately as its smell is already alarming to the health of the people in the community. “The carcass should be disposed of immediately because its smell can be toxic and hazardous to the community,” he said.

The Incoming President Must Rectify Social Wrongs

“WHAT if the newly elected President fails?!” The incoming president should not fail because his failure is not his own alone but more so of the Filipino people. We should not allow him to fail. It is horrible even to contemplate of failure knowing that the culture of poverty has engulfed our people as our country has now the most prevalent incidence of poverty in East Asia. His failure means that a few elites will continue to have much too much and the many who are poor will continue to have much too little and corruption and ineptness in bureaucracy will not yet be put in the “dustbin” of history. If such be the case, we will surely face the consequences of a civil war. His failure will mean that the culture of powerlessness will continue to breed despair and hopelessness, many have to leave their love ones to find jobs abroad. Like a sinking ship, thousands are jumping in droves every month to seek greener pastures in other countries. The culture of corruption and greed has stripped our country of whatever dignity it has left. The culture of violence has

put our country in shame as it is only in our country where the “Maguindanao Massacre, the Marawi Siege and suicidal bomber” is possible. These cultures must now be countervailed by the new President with the full force of the people supporting him. We must now reclaim our dignity as a people and win back the future for our children. That collectivist counter culture is our response to break monopolies and cartels in a country where only 50 families control the economy. Very glaring is the control of the oligarchs of water and electricity which are means to life and should not be a means of so much raking by the oligarchs. Let me underscored the truism of the control of the oligarchs of our electricity which is a great social injustice against the 13 million member-consumer-owners (MCOs) of so-called Electric Cooperatives. In a landmark decision in the case of Philreca vs. Dept. of Finance penned by Justice Mariano del Castillo, no less than the Supreme Court ruled that the 123 Electric Cooperatives in the country are cooperatives in name only and not

Orlan R. Ravanera

genuine cooperatives. As categorically stated in their By-Laws under Sec. 1, Art. 2, “The members are the joint owners of the electric cooperatives with their individual equity in its assets determined the basis of their patronage.” That’s the reason why the members are called MCOs (member-consumerowners). All these years, in the past 70 years, that is the greatest LIE perpetuated by the so-called Electric Cooperatives. Why is this so? Every time the MCOs will claim such right, they will just be told that they have only contributed P5 as membership fee. The truth is, in the unbundling of their monthly payment, it is shown that from the very beginning, each MCO has been paying two items in their patronage contribution which are: a) the total amortization of cost (payment to loans) which is about P.085/kwh and b) the provision for Reinvestment which is about P0.11/ kwh. This means a monthly capital contribution of about See RECTIFY, page 11

Hints and Traces

The reason for our hope AS we approach the end of the Easter season when we celebrate the truth of our faith that Christ is alive and has gained victory over sin and death, we are reminded of the presence and crucial role of the Holy Spirit who continues Christ’s presence and redemptive work in us until the end of time. “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,” Christ said, “he will testify to me.” (Jn 15,26) With these words, Christ was reassuring his apostles, and us, that he would continue to be with us, despite his death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. Later on, he warned his apostles, and us, that we should not worry even as we continue to have troubles and suffering in this world, since as long as we are with him, everything would be taken care of. “I have told you this so that you may not fall away,” he said. “They will expel you from the synagogues. In fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.” (Jn 16,1-2) Given the fact that our condition on earth is that of a pilgrim, we should be strong in this virtue of hope that would enable us to be

always on the move toward our ultimate, spiritual, and supernatural goal without unnecessarily getting entangled with our human and temporal affairs, let alone, our unavoidable troubles here on earth. Hope is first of all not just a virtue that we produce, cultivate or keep ourselves. It is first of all a gift from God, given to us in abundance. It is the gift of Christ himself who, by the Holy Spirit, is made present in us through his words, his sacraments, his Church. All we have to do is to correspond to this wonderful reality as vigorously as possible. That is why we need to be most mindful of the truths of our faith, giving time to meditate on them and to make them sink in our very consciousness. We have to be wary of our tendency to be carried away by our earthly concerns, no matter how legitimate they are. For again, as the gospel would say, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mk 8,36) It’s important that just like in that management style called MBO (Management by Objective), we have to have a clear vision of our ultimate goal and make it the strongest desire of our life, so that we avoid getting

Roy Cimagala

entangled unnecessarily with the ups and downs and the drama of life. This, of course, will require some significant effort, because especially nowadays people are getting too hooked in their earthly, temporal affairs. Hope gives one the conviction that God has the last word, goodness has the last say. It reassures everyone that it is all worthwhile to suffer a little or a lot in life as long as one does not lose sight of his eternal goal. Hope gives one a deep sense of peace and joy, and an abiding sense of confidence, regardless of how things play out in one’s life, since life always has more to offer than what we can expect or handle. When we seem to be overwhelmed by trials, challenges, tasks, pressures that can come anytime, I believe the attitude to have and the reaction to make is to be calm, pray hard, and while we do all we can, we have to learn to live a certain sense of abandonment in the hands of God.

Importance of Nonverbal Communication to Children’s Growth

Education: Key to success by: IVY B. EASTMAN T-III Gitagum Central School

Education is definitely one of the most important tools for success. It creates new opportunities and paves the way for a better life. A person with a high qualification can easily get better job opportunities and meet the organization’s job standards. With education it alters our outlook on life and makes us more optimistic. The vast ocean of knowledge gained through education enables us to solve larger problems in a rational and positive manner, laying the groundwork for success in our respective professions. Education also boosts your productivity and makes a person smarter when it comes to completing a task with the help of modern technology. It assists in learning the necessary skills for a job and propels you forward in your field. However, education is not the only way to achieve success in life; in fact, it is only the first step. To be suc-

cessful in life, you must also work hard, be determined, be dedicated, and be sincere. These things, along with your education, will undoubtedly open all doors to success and assist you in achieving your life’s goal. Education teaches us knowledge, ethics, and values. It gives an intellectual dimension to our thinking. It helps us make more logical and rational in every decisions. Education also helps an individual become selfsufficient and improves his lifestyle by allowing him to earn a better living for himself and his family. Education not only contributes to individual success, but it also contributes to a country’s economic growth. It contributes to the development of better citizens, a better society, and a better nation by bringing us out of the darkness of ignorance and illuminating us with knowledge.

Nonverbal communication is an important aspect of children’s development. Nonverbal communication increases understanding of messages. Because nonverbal communication includes the use of gestures that children can readily learn through them because nonverbal communication and learning have a substantial positive link. Through the use of nonverbal language, teachers draw the student’s attention to more understanding and motivate the students and even bring excitement to the students. Nonverbal communication is critical in the development of language in both normal and autistic children, demonstrating that it is an intrinsic aspect of verbal communication, which is crucial to learning. Children’s gestures give a way for them to transmit meaning to information that they can’t express orally. This means that children prefer nonverbal communication to verbal communication, and that nonverbal communication is crucial

in learning. Children can communicate nonverbally by pointing at an object in their environment, verbally by speaking unusual phrases, or both nonverbally and verbally. Nonverbal communication is the simplest of the three modes of communication since it is a natural trait. Nonverbal cues come before verbal utterances, not the other way around, making nonverbal communication easier for youngsters to utilize and understand than vocal communication. Because both verbal and nonverbal communication is means of communication, there is a complex relationship between gesture and speech, indicating that nonverbal cues are an important aspect of children’s language development. Nonverbal communication is an integral and essential component of proper growth and development in children. Children are active in learning new things each day and the most effective way of learning is through nonverbal communication.

expediency,” Romualdez said. During the joint public session of Congress led by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Speaker Lord Allan Velasco on Tuesday morning, the preliminary activities of

the canvassing were carried out. This mainly covered the opening of ballot boxes containing the certificates of canvass (COCs) from the overseas absentee voting (OAV), which was held a See SAYS, page 9

Adapting minimum standards for education in emergencies by: HAZEL N. TESOCAN T-III Gitagum Central School

Education can be both lifesaving and life-sustaining in emergencies, chronic crises, and early reconstruction efforts. It can save lives by preventing exploitation and harm and disseminating critical survival messages. It keeps life going by providing structure, stability, and hope for the future during a crisis, especially for school children. Education in emergencies also aids in the healing of the pain of negative experiences, the development of skills, and the support of conflict resolution and peace building. School safety is a social responsibility. Society has an ethical obligation to ensure that a school can provide a safe learning environment for the entire school community. Empathy and security are not mutually exclusive when it comes to making schools safer. It requires both. As for me, school safety consists of three components; people (students, teachers, staff, and community members/ stakeholders), place (building and campus), and practices/policies (routines and rules supporting safe activities). With the help of stakeholders and other authorities in the community who made more strides to get better safety for the school children it will lead to better safety and this will strengthen the resilience of the community at large. Indeed, school safety isn’t one person’s responsibility, it is everyone’s responsibility. Education is prevention. Children are not just receptors of disaster prevention information. With appropriate guidance from their teachers and other members of the educational community even the smallest child can become an important source of information to their family and community. If the students can then transfer the knowledge to members of their families, it becomes general knowledge and the community can prepare as well. All educational efforts in school that aimed disaster risk prevention, are in fact actions for development and for life. The

better the levels of education and organization in the community, the better their capacity to prevent, reduce and mitigate risk factors, and to recover from the effects of disasters unleashed by natural phenomena or human actions. Education could also directly benefit disaster preparation efforts by changing risk and time preferences, as well as the capacity to plan for the future. In sum, education can help to raise awareness among households and promote the adoption of precautionary measures. It can furthermore support the provision of critical material and immaterial resources, required to prepare against and adapt to natural hazards adequately. Education can, hence, be a key element in disaster risk mitigation and help reducing vulnerabilities to disaster and other environmental hazards both on a household and community level. Prevention is transformation and investment. It makes no difference whether they are large or small, urban or rural, all communities and schools that receive disaster prevention input positively contribute a transformation. Investment in a sense that disaster prevention is not only an important humanitarian action, but it is also an investment that encourages the development of school, communities, it’s infrastructure, economy, heritage and its history. It also constitutes a saving, for it is far more efficient to reduce risk than to replace the losses caused by disasters. Indeed, disaster risk reduction approach helps me as a teacher leader consider emergency response activities considering existing and new disaster risks. It enables me to design or adjust our school activities so that our learners and the people in communities become safer and more disaster-resilient, as well as safeguarding efforts to create and expand enabling conditions for sustainable poverty alleviation and development.

“We recognize the challenges faced by our retirement pensioners in going to SSS branch to avail of the Pension Loan Program. With the pandemic still around, pensioners prefer to have their transactions done online in their respective homes. This online facility makes it easier for them to avail of said program as it also guarantees a faster approval process,” Regino explains. Regino also urges retirement pensioners to take advantage of this low-interest loan offering from the SSS. He ensures that SSS will not require them to surrender their ATM cards as pawn collateral, unlike some private loan institutions. The PLP was launched to assist retirement pensioners in their short-term financial needs by offering a loan at a low-interest rate of 10% per annum. Qualified retirement pensioners can apply for a loan equivalent to 3, 6, 9, or 12 times of their basic monthly pension plus the P1,000.00 additional benefit, but not exceeding the maximum amount of P200,000.00. Further information on the pension loan program and its terms and conditions can be accessed through this link https://bit.ly/3sKV1HA.

Mathematics in the 21st Century By EMMALYN M. SIMBRE

In the advent of new technology and the generations Y and Z nowadays, and of course in the booming trends of the new millennials, the teaching strategies of the teachers must compliment and compensate the learning needs of the millennials as well. That is why teachers now are encouraged to better adapt the changes among the 21st century learners so that they can still implement the Department of Education’s mission and vision in the most effective way possible. As to the specific subject of Mathematics, as they deal with numbers and scientific facts and figures, the 21st century learners, as they are considered as multi-taskers and technologysavvy, it posts a great challenge to the teachers on how they will deliver and provide the best and quality education to the learners considering those changes. Now, teachers must as well employ better teaching methodologies to cope it up with. For Mathematics, of course we cannot deny the fact that some of the learners cannot easily grasp the lessons and learning taught. Further, Mathematics teachers now are very creative when it comes to introducing and teaching numbers and mathematical equations so that their students will love the subject and the most, they give their full assistance and guidance for them to able to

reach their full potential as they go on learning and loving the subject Mathematics. Same thing and approach when teaching and imparting the fundamentals and basics of Mathematics. Same as the Mathematics subject in which not all of the pupils immediately or rightfully love it or to say like it. Again, teachers should apply the necessary teaching fittings to catch the attention and retain the span of the students towards the subject. With this, it is with great commendation and appreciation to all the teachers who are committedly teaching the subjects Mathematics to our 21st century learners. To pupils, we request your eager cooperation and participation so that together hand in hand we can achieve the best and quality education for you. To my fellow teachers, let us continue to be a blessing and a living servant to our learners. I know this is not an easy task but with utmost dedication and commitment we can imprint changes to better the lives of our students and that they will be better members of the community and that they can be of great help in the nationbuilding. But then again, this is a unified effort that is why I enjoined everyone to be stewards and partners for change and be of great assistance to our 21st century learners for them to learn the best.

movements of raw materials’ prices in the global market,” Ambi said. She said the changes in the SRPs of the DTI-covered BNPCs are necessary to also help the manufacturers in keeping up with the demand despite the noted escalations in their production costs. According to the DTI main office, the prices of major raw materials like tamban (for canned fish products), mechanically deboned meat (for processed meat products), buttermilk (for processed milk), and palm oil (for toilet paper and instant noodles) jumped by 0.56 percent to 32.14 percent. This after fuel prices went up by 28.84 percent. Meanwhile, business establishments are reminded to follow the SRPs, while the field offices of DTI 11 are closely monitoring those within their areas of operation. “This will help the government to ensure compliance with the Price Act; thus, protecting the interest of consumers,” Ambi said. “We encourage everyone to communicate with us whenever they observe discrepancies in the prices of goods when compared to the SRPs. You may contact our official social media pages in seeking assistance so that we can facilitate the needed action,” she added. For immediate concerns, the agency said the public may contact its Facebook page: DTI Region 11. (PNA)

Further, Golden Rice can help in the fight against Vitamin A Deficiency which weakens the body’s visual and immune system, especially in children. In 2019, it passed a biosafety assessment and was declared, “as safe as conventional rice” by DA-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI). Additionally, the Philippines is the first-ever country in the world to have approved genetically engineered rice with nutritional benefits. Lanao del Norte, being listed as one of the priority provinces of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) with high stunting incidence from the 2015 Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) data, is one of the chosen pilot areas for the program. “As part of the pilot-scale deployment, we have allocated seeds to be planted in Lanao del Norte this year, which will then be deployed to farmers and consumers,” shared Program Leader Dr.

Making the world a better place through education By JULIET S. DAHONOG Teacher III Iponan Elementary School

EDUCATION can be described in simple terms as the process of giving or receiving systematic instructions about any given subject. Everything that we see around us – from the cars we drive to the roads we drive them on, even the device that you’re reading this article on – can be attributed to education. All of the progress that we have done as humans is all thanks to education. Imagine what would happen if one generation refused to transfer the knowledge and wisdom to the next. We would not receive any guidance and learnings from our previous generations and would fail to

create or achieve anything substantial. The whole process of development would come to a halt. Thankfully, modern education is becoming easy to access, easy to afford and increasingly non-dependent on your geo-location. This is evident from our progress in the last five centuries alone. We’ve designed and created things to make our lives better, perform faster and heal quicker. Advancements in modern education, development of new economies and rise in innovation and technology have catapulted success for countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Knowledge is power By ARLE D. POLANCOS Teacher II Iponan Elementary School

NOT only can education give more power but it can also create more happiness, too. Education breaks down barriers for greater human understanding, empathy and empowerment. While not everyone has the opportunity to get an education, everyone should. It could fundamentally change the world. Knowledge opens worlds of opportunities for you and me which is why the power of education is so important. Remember yourself as a tenyear-old? Sitting in school listening to your teacher who you likely adored. She was reading you that really good chapter book and stopped at

the very best art. The whole class groaned and begged for her to keep going. You wanted to hear more, know more, understand more. Without even knowing it, you craved that information. You wanted the story. You wanted more. Here in lies the power of education – the basic human quality of wanting to know things. What happens when you know something that someone else doesn’t? You have a little more power. Knowledge breeds power. It also breeds a wealth of traits to drive and improve the human experience. Education is power because it gives people knowledge.

How is an online class different from traditional class By VEINOS B. IGCALINOS Iponan Elementary School

WHEN choosing between online and traditional education, it can be helpful to consider factors such as learning styles, settings, and technology need. When students are considering choosing between online and traditional education, they may only think about the most obvious difference between computer versus classroom. There are many other differences that could significantly impact a student’s ability to succeed. Typically, online learning tends to favor independent learning styles. Online students are expected to be self-directed in achieving their academic goals while balancing other responsibilities. Some courses also favor certain learning styles over others. For instance, those that rely primarily on visual content may favor visual learners. Others deliver

material through recorded audio lectures, which can be helpful for auditory learners. Although there are still misconceptions that online courses are isolating, most online education programs have adopted active learning environments that incorporate activities, peer-to-peer communication, and studentinstructor interactions. This can helpful for individuals who learn better when working with others. Nevertheless, traditional courses often cater more specifically to students with collaborative learning styles, especially auditory and kinesthetic learners. Likewise, traditional learning environments offer opportunities for face-to-face interaction in and out of the classroom. Furthermore, at a brick-andmortar school, social and academic support may come from peers on campus.

Love to learn

By CHERIE LOU P. LANZADERAS Master Teacher I Iponan Elementary School

LOVE of learning is a disposition to seek out new experiences and novel opportunities for learning. Love of learning can rescue a person from feelings of boredom and repetition. The most common example of someone that loves learning is a child. For the child, everything is fresh, new and interesting. This is why it is often said to be a good thing to be childlike. Children are not motivated to learn for academic degrees or money. They learn because they enjoy it. As we grow older, learning becomes more and more associated with external rewards.

As good as these things may be, in some ways, they can actually harm our motivation to learn because we begin to want the reward more than the new information or understanding. To truly love learning, it needs to be enjoyed for its own sake. The downfall of many students has been the feeling of boredom and the lack of entertainment that often goes along with many other lectures. Focusing on developing a love of learning can at times, buffer these experiences of boredom. Bu for someone who loves learning, boredom is hard to find.

A committed teacher By JASMIN B. BENEDICTO Teacher III Tawantawan Integrated School Initao South District Division of Misamis Oriental

Camaman-an Elementary School is one lucky school to have numerous benefactors and donors willing to help aid the needs of the school and learners in particular. One of those, is a man whose heart goes beyond being a father of his Grade Six daughter Maja Jamela L. Vallejos, when he thought of a timely project which benefited not only the Grade Six garnet pupils where her daughter is enrolled but all the school children of the school. Although, the school is maximizing all its funds to provide teachers and learners the needed materials for the chosen modality which is the Modular Learning

but this does not stop Mr. Marlon L, Vallejos an active youtuber to extend his help through the project “ Papel Mo, Kinabukasan Ko.” A video presentation uploaded on his Youtube Channel “The Marjing TV” showing how their donated bondpapers can make a difference to the lives of the learners of CES. The video touches the hearts and incited generous people in all walks of life to donate the materials needed for the school children,. The administ rators, teachers, parents and most especially the learners were grateful for such remarkable gestures of generosity of Mr. Vallejos.

Committed teachers emphasize that teacher commitment is at the core of their contribution to student achievement and school goals, and in turn in creating quality education. Committed teachers love teaching and work with students through building good relationships with them and showing them respect. particularly because they can make a difference in student achievement. Student achievement can help improve school and education quality. Teacher commitment to teaching and its associated aspects are explored, including the characteristics of committed teachers. Committed teachers are characterized by four qualities: having a desire to be good teachers, being more fact purveyors and sources, recognizing and accepting individual worth, and meeting professional responsibilities. Thus, committed teachers need to be prepared, to maintain their commitment, and to

improve their performance. Principals can help teachers be committed to teaching, for example, by implementing leadership styles that contribute to their commitment. Education policymakers can make the teaching profession be more appealing by elevating its status, similar to that of doctors, to attract the best candidates. A great teacher develops relationships with students. The research literature agrees: teachers need to be able to build trusting relationships with students in order to create a safe, positive and productive learning environment. Patient and caring, which we defined as personality characteristics related to being a compassionate person, particularly with learners, was the second most frequently reported quality. Again, there is research to support that teacher dispositions are strongly related to student learning and development.

the peace so that the voters can vote without fear and coercion,” Cuerpo said in an interview Tuesday. Tubaran’s special elections came about after tensions between rival political camps arose amid allegations of irregularities. During the election day itself, supporters of reelectionist Mayor

Yassin Papandayan barricaded the municipal hall to prevent the transport of election materials to protest what they viewed as the “sudden” re-clustering of polling precincts. The Comelec declared a failure of elections after thousands were prevented from voting in certain barangays. (PNA)

The Philippines’ alternative learning bill institutionalizes ALS all over the country By NEO ALFE ANTHONY L. AMAO ALS Mobile Teacher I City Central School

SENATE Bill 1365 or the proposed Alternative Learning System (ALS) Act, which was passed by the Senate on final reading early this month, seeks to expand the existing ALS program of the government which is embedded in RA 10533, otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. Whereas in the current ALS setup, it is an option for each schools division to establish ALS schemes only in selected public schools in the division, it will now be mandatory to each municipality and city in the country Senate Bill 1365 is signed by the President or lapses into law, either way

around. It seeks to provide more opportunities to those who cannot access formal education due to economic, geographic, political, cultural and social barriers. Whereas in the current setup, ALS lectures can only be done on weekends when regular students are not around, the bill seeks to construct community learning centers in each and municipality in the country only for the purpose. Whereas in the current setup, only daylong weekend face-to-face sessions are done, the bill seeks to utilize other modes such as digital learning, broadcast-based instructions and workshops.

THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNERS By MARGIE M. ANTIGA Master Teacher I Opol Central School

Teaching and educating the 21st century learners post a great challenge to every public school teacher; in which the young learners possess differing attitudes and orientations. Some are good in reading, some are independent readers, but still a lot are frustrated readers. Thus, teachers must always go the extra mile in making every learner a reader. With the advent of the new technology, teachers can now prepare more enticing and attention – seeking instructional materials that would better enlightened the pupils that they have to really read. Further, illuminating the Department of Education’s

thrust of making “Every Child a Reader Program”, or the ECARP, it is but the great milestone that public schools should pursue of indeed, making every learner a reader. Thus, as a public school teacher, it is of great service that I always aspire of teaching the pupils how to read and write, and making them literates. Somehow, that would be the best legacy I can leave to them. Reading is not as easy as one, two, and three but with great determination, perseverance, and commitment, we can altogether achieve our dreams for all the pupils, and that is their academic success, their shinning, shimmering success in the future.

Into the world of Mathematics By EMMALYN M. SIMBRE

Many authors have defined the meaning and interrelation of the Mathematics as a subject. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Mathematics as “the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations. According to Professor Robert H. Lewis, “Mathematics is not about answers, it’s about processes.” He observes that, far too often, the way in which students learn math is equivalent to building a scaffold without ever constructing the building that the scaffolding is intended to support. “The real ‘building’ in the mathematics sense is the true mathematical understanding, the true ability to think, perceive, and analyze mathematically.” While Mathematics bears so much definitions, teaching and learning it cannot be dubbed as easy as A, B, C, and D. No, it can never be. While some pupils may love it, well, most of the pupils hate it or should I say, not interested in

it. However, we, as teachers, find and allot so much time, patience and understanding in order to make the pupils understand that Mathematics does not only require solving problems and equations, bumping into numbers and many others but there’s more of it. Learning mathematics can be truly incorporated into learning the basics and fundamentals of life’s operations and endeavors. That is why, it takes so much compassion and love to share and impart the teachings ang learnings of Mathematics as a subject to our pupils as teachers follow the pace of the pupils. Thus, in every learning process, the welfare of the pupils is of top priority always, and it should always be. Here, I encourage my fellow Mathematics teachers to always strive and go for the gold. The path may be hard and challenging but I am sure that it’s end point, it’s finish line is very fruitful and very sweet. Let us continue to strive hard for the good and welfare of today’s children and for the next generation’s children’s children.

P98.54 based on a monthly consumption of about 200kwh per month. After all these years (about 70 years as MCOs), each one has a total patronage capital contribution of about P78,000. How amazing and how frustrating because never have these patronage capital contribution of the 13 million MCOs been recognized which when summed-up will reach more than one trillion pesos already. No recognition for reason that these so-called ECs are not registered with the Cooperative Development Authority which by law is the only registering agency of all types of cooperatives. When leader-advocates will try to register with CDA, they would be harassed or even be killed. Thus, many of these onceupon electric cooperatives registered with CDA are now owned by the oligarchs and transformed into corporations. If you are a CDA Chairman and signed their Registration Certificate or the Certificate of Compliance, an Ombudsman and a Sandigan Bayan case will be filed against you, and you could be found guilty and be dismissed from office as what happened to yours truly. Please remember what is stated in Chapter 15, Art. 12 of the 1987 Constitution: “The State shall promote the viability and growth of cooperatives as instruments of social justice, equity and economic development.” Such is an imperative call to rectify social wrongs in a highly-skewed societal order. The newly elected President must now rectify a great social injustice committed against the Filipino people especially on the social wrong committed by the so-called Electric Cooperatives against the 13 million MCOs with a total base of some 65 million Filipinos in a family of five. Cooperativizing the Electric Cooperatives was what then the intention of the Rural Electrification Law when it was passed in the late sixties authored by no less the late Vice President Emmanuel Pelaez, Sen. Diokno and Sen. Tanada. No less than the United States Assistance for International Development (USAID) gave a grant of some $800 million dollars for that as the USAID believed electricity

is a means to life and must not be controlled by the oligarchs. Indeed, that was the clamor before as championed by no less than the Father of Cooperatives in the country, the late Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel and the late Senator Butch Aquino. Now they have leaped to the Great Beyond. Cooperativisng the Electric Cooperatives was then the cry of the multitude. Today, many advocates have joined the financially rich oligarchs. For fighting for what is right, what is true and what is just, yours truly is now being crucified! Mr. President, this is the greatest social wrong that must now be rectified to unfetter the people from the quagmire of poverty! Indeed, VERITAS LIBERABIT VOS (the truth shall set us free). One day, when the Filipino people are awakened, they will pronounced the truism that just like air and water, electricity is a means to life and must not be a means of money-making by a few oligarchs! That is the essence of cooperativizing the so-called Electric Cooperatives to correct the fallacy that the Electric Cooperatives are cooperatives. TAMA NA PO ANG PANLOLOKO SA SAMBAYANANG PILIPINO. KOOPERATIBA LANG SA PANGALAN HINDI SA GAWA! SOCIAL JUSTICE DEMANDS THAT THE CAPITAL PATRONAGE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE MCOs MUST BE RECOGNIZED THAT IS NOW MORE THAN A TRILLION PESOS. That

would mean each family of the 13 million MCOs must be receiving a monthly patronage refund like the Electric Cooperatives in the United States and other countries that are providing free scholarship, free housing and medical services to families of the MCOs. But first, these so-called Electric Cooperatives must registered with CDA, the only registering agency of all types of cooperatives as clearly declared by the law so that they will follow the time-honored and universally accepted cooperative principles of democratic control, patronage refund, transparency and accountability, among others. Again, remember this: VERITAS LIBERABIT VOS. TAMA NA PO ANG PAG CRUCIFY SA AKIN! I know that I will be imprisoned or be erased from the face of one of these days be it on the issue of the oppressed Indigenous Peoples or great social injustice in the existence of so-called Electric Cooperatives after several attempts to my life. Before that happens, may I Share this simple poem: My name is Veritas, so simple is my language, Mankind runs after me because I am a precious possession; But to powerful land-grabbers of the IP lands or to the oligarchs controlling the ECs, I am a threat, so I have to be erased from the face of the earth or be imprisoned in the dungeon to silence me. But there will always be lovers of truth who will seek for me because they cannot live without my presence. Many have marched to

their death because of me (veritas). These oligarchs do not know that in the silence of the dungeon or my grave, I gain strength. One day, when the sleeping Filipino are awakened and conscienticized, I will burst out into the open and liberate the poor and the oppressed to unfetter them from diabolic mindset and oppressive structures including a flawed judicial system that seems to follow not the rule of the law but that of power and money!

health insurance for 12 million senior citizens of the country, in addition to their pension. Currently, some of the benefits senior citizens receive are the 20 pecent discount and VAT exemption on medicines, food fare and even doctors fees and hospital bills. A political analyst said that, “this early, Bongbong recent surge in the selection of technocrats to the top economic portfolios of finance, and even the formation of fully techn o c r at i c gove r n m e nt s under the presumptive President Marcos Junior are good signs regarding the role of technocrats and technocratic governments in economic policy in democracies. Who are the technocrats? Why are they appointed in the first place? What is their impact on economic policy and finally what their sour The President economic team should focus on reversing socio-economic stratum where 82 percent urban poor (labor sector), 4 percent Professional services-middle class, 10 percent super middle class and 2 Percent oligarchies which had the biggest chunk of the fruit of the Philippine economy. President Bongbong economic team should learn from Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand where Labor sector under economic precepts and principle that the labor sector, or the urban poor is the factor spiraling more economic development. Foreign Direct Investment if the labor and urban poor lacks the Bargaining power for a developing economy like the Philippines.
