WHAT is the true meaning of faith? Faith means: belief, firm persuasion, assurance, firm conviction, faithfulness. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and the assurance that the lord is working, even though we cannot see it. Faith knows that no matter what the situation, in our lives or someone else’s that the lord is working in it. Trust or reliance? What does faith mean for you, my dear readers? To say it clearly: without faith we are really nothing. Faith is belief; believe in us, beliefs in our works, talents and personalities. Faith - a great challenge in us and our future. We also should believe in our parents or better, in the whole family including the black sheep, who can be found everywhere. We should also believe in our friends, even sometimes it seems to become a very difficult task. A friend? A real friend? An expatriate friend...? Without faith, we will be reaching the rock bottom. Please don’t say, it’s a likely story. The German poet

Johann Christian Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1815) mentioned in his drama “Maria Stuart”: “Even the word might be dead, but faith keeps it alive.” Yes, I can live with this. Faith and hope belong together. In his book “Through the Valley of the Kwai”, Scottish officer Ernest Gordon wrote of his years as a prisoner of World War II. The 6’2’’ man suffered from malaria, diphtheria, typhoid, beriberi and jungle ulcers. Many circumstances quickly plunged his weight to less than 100 pounds. Lying in the dirt of the death house, he waited to die. But every day, a fellow prisoner came to wash his wounds and to encourage him to eat parts of his own rations. As this fellow prisoner nursed Ernest back to health, he talked with the agnostic Scotsman of his own strong faith in God and showed him that, even in the midst of suffering - there is hope - and faith! Faith is indeed tantamount to convincing and conviction. Richard Wagner, a German classical composer and poet found the

Klaus Doring

following lyric: “Blessed are those people, who know how to live their life in humility and faith!” Well, let’s even continue believing in our government. Faithful hope is loyal, reliable, exact and honorable. Faith looks beyond the transient life with hope for all eternity. The hope we read in scripture is not a wishy-washy optimism. First and second Chapter of Thessalonians, for example, give encouragement to all Christians, who have been undergoing persecution for their faith. And, Corinthians 13:2 says: “If I have faith it can move mountains!” +++ Email : dor ing klau s @ gmail.com or follow me on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter or visit www.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot. com or www.klausdoringsclassicalmusic.blogspot. com.

Kim’s Dream Debunking Egoic Mind and Collective Insanity

Wind of Change

HOW time flies! Six more weeks and it will be 2022 already; then a few more months, new leaders will appear, the winners in the forthcoming elections. Time flows like running ripples in that brook called life aptly described by Shakespeare as “like a walking shadow, a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more, a story told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Some new-age philosophers called time as just an illusion; what matters is the now! One’s concept of time varies. It is measured in so many ways, – titles, wealth, learning, experiences, number of children or marriages, victories, failures, travels, friends. There are those who measure time in terms of the intangibles as in experiencing the depth and width of life. For the romantics, they advance some poetic lines like, “it is better to have loved and lost rather than to have not loved at all.” For those who are said to be avatars, time doesn’t exist at all for life continues here and beyond. And when love is in one’s heart, time and space have no meaning for love transcends everything. Not even death can have power over that supreme force in the universe as the beloved is always carried in one’s heart, in one’s inner consciousness – forever. For in truth, we are all

embodied spirit (Conscious Awareness). The body is time-bounded, but the spirit (Consciousness) (who we really are) is not. And so, when we recognized our true selves – as beyond time and space – time becomes an illusion. Thus, it is in this light that it behooves upon all of us to instill in ourselves those inner qualities – love, courage, kindness, patience, compassion, goodness – so as not to succumb to the whims and caprices of the time. From the mundane to the sublime. Truly, such is the most liberating process, freeing us from that fear of death that has no power over our Consciousness manifested through actions. Perhaps, it is that kind of spirituality that goes with the new era which is now in the offing as taught to us by ancient wisdom based on the position of the earth in the cosmos. It is the teaching of all major religions that there is someone coming to liberate us and all the while we have been waiting. The truth is, what we have been waiting for is really ourselves, our spiritual awakening to harness our inner power in that realm of heightened spiritual consciousness. Recognize that Conscious Awareness, that is actually you, prior to becoming form. Yes, you are human (body) but you are more than that, you are the being. That discovery of en-

hancing our collective potentials, I believe, will be the key to the establishment of a new order and a new paradigm that will provide the nurturing spirit for Mother Earth to survive from all the pains inflicted upon Her by the present development system that is consuming Her. It is in this light that the wind of change is now hovering upon the earth. It is so amazing to witness the on-going shift as many countries are now undergoing fundamental change. The use of fossil fuel and coal-plants to provide energy has been acknowledged to have been contributing massively to climate change. There is now an on-going shift to clean and renewable energy, otherwise, we will not survive to reach the 22nd century as the earth warms and the oceans rise. The collective consciousness and spirituality of all the peoples of the world must now heal the wounds of Mother Earth and those of Her children, damaged all these years through false religions and western development materialistic and consumerist paradigm that have sacrificed the people and the ecosystems to the altar of greed, profit, fame See CHANGE, page 11

Ayala Group issues its first social bond for healthcare investments MANILA – Ayala Corporation’s (“AC” or “Ayala”) foreign subsidiary, AYC Finance Limited, signed today a 10-year Social Bond through private placement by the International Finance Corporation (“IFC”) amounting to $100 million (the “Social Bond”), which will be used for the sustainable and resilient growth and capacity building of

Lacson Paves Way for a More Participative Budget Process

WITH a boost from Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson, civil society groups managed to help scrutinize and make the P5.024-trillion proposed budget for 2022 more responsive to people’s needs. Social Watch Philippines and the Alternative Budget Initiative wrote Lacson on Nov. 10, thanking him for endorsing their participation in the Senate Finance Committee hearings on the budget. “We hope that you will continue to support our inclusive budget proposals that focus on the needs of the country’s most marginalized sectors, especially since

they are the ones that were most affected by the pandemic, by sponsoring before the plenary deliberations and incorporating into the good Senator’s budgetary amendments to the FY 2022 General Appropriations Bill,” co-convenors Rene Raya, Ma. VIctoria Raquiza and Jessica Cantos said in a letter to Lacson. They also commended Lacson for all his efforts in serving the country, as well as for believing in what Social Watch PhilippinesAlternative Budget Initiative stands for. Earlier, Lacson endorsed the SWP-ABI’s participation in the committee hearings

Medethix Inc. (“Medethix”). Last July, AC Health officially broke ground for the construction of Healthway Cancer Care Center, the Philippines’ first dedicated specialty cancer hospital. The 100-bed facility, which is expected to be completed in July 2023, will be equipped with 20 chemotherapy chairs, 4 operating theaters, and state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, optimized for cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment. AC Health has partnered with Varian-CTSI, a leading oncology service provider, to develop and operate the Healthway Cancer Care Center. Leading the Ayala Group’s COVID-19 Response When the pandemic struck the Philippines, AC Health proved to be a partner in nationbuilding by leading the Ayala Group’s COVID-19 response initiatives. It rallied its business units to work closely with the DOH, IATF, and local government units in implementing protocols across the Ayala Group and spearheading key milestones, from converting Qualimed sites into COVID-19 referral hospitals, capacitating 8 RT-PCR testing labs, to securing vaccines for employees and other stakeholders. AC Health also helped secure 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for the Ayala Group via tripartite agreements with the government. To date, it has administered over 570,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to recipients from various LGUs, the Ayala Group, and partner companies across its 25 vaccination sites nationwide. Medethix, a member of the AC Health group, announced last week its order of 300,000 treatment courses of Molnupiravir, the first oral antiviral medicine to be authorized for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 infection. Molnupiravir is expected to democratize COVID-19 treatment due to its affordable price. It will also greatly help ease the burden to the country’s healthcare system by providing an additional treatment option to prevent hospitalizations and deaths. “AC Health’s vision is to build an integrated and seamless ecosystem of healthcare. We are proud that this vision has resonated with many stakeholders, including IFC. We are delighted to be partnering with IFC which has been an advocate for affordable and accessible healthcare in developing markets around the world. At Ayala, we truly believe that Filipinos deserve better healthcare, and this social bond will be instrumental to AC Health as we scale-up our services beyond this pandemic,” AC Health President & CEO Paolo Borromeo said.

from page 6 Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services, Asia and the Pacific at IFC. “Our investment in this social bond from our long-standing client, the Ayala Group, will help strengthen the Philippines’ healthcare system at a crucial time while also helping to develop the market for social bonds, which is becoming an important tool for helping the private sector to manage the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic and build resilience against future shocks.” In 2018, Ayala Group deepened its commitment to the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the Filipino by being more deliberate and purposive in identifying areas where it can contribute substantially and help solve global issues. Ayala identified 11 Sustainable Development Goals that are at the heart of its businesses—including good health and well-being for AC Health—with the goal of bridging the Filipino to the year 2030. Aya l a announce d l ast October its commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning its business strategy with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. It is the first Philippine conglomerate to make such a commitment. Growing the Healthcare Network AC Health’s vision is to build an integrated healthcare ecosystem focused on improving healthcare for all. This commitment is a testament to the Ayala Group’s long-standing purpose of improving lives and promoting sustainable development and growth for the Philippines. Since its inception in 2015, AC Health has gone a long way in addressing the fundamental gaps in accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare. AC Health has built an ecosystem that caters to the various healthcare needs of Filipinos. AC Health’s portfolio comprises Generika, a chain of over 700 drugstores that offer quality and affordable generic medicines; Healthway Philippines, a network of primary, multispecialty, and corporate clinics; the QualiMed Health Network, which operates multi-specialty clinics, a stand-alone ambulatory surgery center, and fullservice hospitals; and HealthNow, an all-in-one healthcare app that offers telemedicine consultations, online medicine ordering and delivery, and clinic and diagnostic testing booking. AC Health also has medicine importation and distribution arms, I.E. Medica Inc. and

of the Senate finance committee chaired by Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara, on the budget bill. Lacson also supported their “Budget Serye sa Senado” discussion on the budget, where he delivered the message that the pandemic underscores the need for an inclusive national budget. In 2019, Lacson filed Senate Bill 24, the “People’s Participation in the National Budget Process Act of 2019,” that provides privileges and incentives for accredited groups that take part in the budgeting process. and other inappropriate alize the collaboration of budget as well as establish This aims to keep greedy items into the national bud- legislature and civil society transparency and accountparties from inserting “pork” get - as well as institution- “to achieve a people-oriented ability in the budget process.”

for this year, and a 7.1-percent growth to hit a 5.5-percent economic growth. “If that happens, by 2022, we only need 4.8-percent growth to reach the GDP level of 2019. That means, we can go back to the pre-pandemic level in 2019 even with only 4.8 percent growth in 2022,” he added. Lopez said his agency has heard positive feedback from the business sector after the lower alert level in Metro Manila since October. He said easing the National Capital Region (NCR) to Alert Level 2 has allowed more sectors to increase their operating capacity. Businesses increased their revenues and more jobs were brought back into the labor market, he added. The trade chief said the Philippines remains a top destination of foreign direct investments in the region, which inflows increased by 43 percent even during a pandemic. Lopez said exports have rebounded by 20 percent from last year’s level and by almost 10 percent compared to 2019, which is a pre-pandemic year. “Very good signs (of recovery). These are all inputs to GDP,” Lopez said. Earlier, the government announced that the economy rose 7.1 percent in the third quarter of the year and revised upward the GDP growth in the second quarter to 12 percent. (PNA)

Shell NSAC’s Virtual Art Interact: How young creative minds can ‘restART’ the nation’s future THE resourcefulness and creativity of young artists can be a powerful voice in moving the country forward, as the empowering messages in their pieces can reignite expression, the hope of the people, and the restrengthening of the economy. This was the timely and powerful idea that reverberated during the recent Virtual Art Interaction, now on its second year and held by the long-running Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC). The event’s ‘restART’ theme also signified that the nation’s future can be rebuilt and revitalized through art. Launched by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation 54 years ago, the NSAC annually convenes aspiring young artists, masters, and art enthusiasts to champion Filipino artistry and creativity. The event also provides student and rising artists an avenue where they can both showcase their works, as well as learn from masters how to succeed in this unique, if challenging industry. “Art has the power to change hearts and minds and communicates messages through a powerful display of sound, visuals, and all of these combined. Filipinos can use the power of their art to keep the Philippines moving forward,” said Conrad Parizal, the Social Performance Adviser for Downstream of Pilipinas Shell. The power of conceptual art Shell NSAC’s restART vision calls for young artists to come together to visualize a brighter tomorrow for all

writer and illustrator Berlin Manalaysay. Carla Francisco, the almostarchitect turned art intern, pointed out another factor to success: “[Be] willing to learn. Ask from those who know more. The success-

How can Administrative Assistant II work effectively during pandemic By ANNA LOU B. FLORES Administrative Assistant II

The first leg of the Shell National Student Art Competition (NSAC) Virtual Art Interact begins. The workshop harnesses the power of conceptual art, or making good use of readily available materials, to help inspire a generation of artists who can make a difference in the future of the Philippines. Filipinos, using their work and skills. Art has the power to influence society, form opinions, and instill values because it can translate messages and experiences across language, time, and culture, as it acts as a vehicle for social change. The pieces of art created during the event emphasize the importance of hope which can rise when artists and the public work together. Multimedia artist Emard Cañedo, explained further the role that art plays during these challenging times: “Art is a form of therapy. It helps us cope with the pandemic. In the long run, after the pandemic, those who practiced art can utilize it as a tool to express themselves.” The event highlight was a deep dive into Conceptual Art, where the artist makes

use of the materials he has available to get their ideas across. This includes exploring alternative resources like charcoal, crayons, lipstick or other beauty items, used newspapers and magazines, and cardboard boxes. Then Cañedo, a visual artist and art educator whose works probe the current socio-political conditions through visual idioms, held a one-hour workshop on ‘Still Life: Finding Life in Art in the Time of Crisis.’ Joining him in the panel discussion was 2007 NSAC Winner Gino Bueza whose art specializes in the elements of collage, where fragmented images are merged into layered juxtapositions of color, pattern, and form. Bueza reinforced his belief in conceptual art, saying, “Joining NSAC makes me happy and helps me

to be resourceful with the limited materials. Limited material is not a blockade to express the message you want to say – but it can build confidence.” How to succeed in art Virtual Art Interact emphasized how young artists can further develop and challenge their art process. Given limitations in resources during times of crisis, the workshop students learned how to use different and ‘ordinary’ materials to enhance their art practice. Leaders from the art world also gave their insights on and guidance to the students on how to be a successful artist. “Support is really important in this field, like what Shell is doing: providing a future platform where artists can showcase their piece,” said comic book

OUR profession are tested during crisis. Yet we are not developed to quit but to continue to make an impact to the future generation in every way possible, to be able to have a chance to teach despite the pandemic is such an honor. We are still touching lives and shaping our students, virtually. What a privilege to still continue the legacy that has been passed unto us by our teachers, even virtually. This requires schools to consider alternative modalities for education delivery that would cater to the needs of our learners. School leaders were challenged to respond and addresses the

needs of the learners in delivering quality education despite this difficulties and be ready to make transition to new ways of leadership as mandated by the Department of Education (DepEd). New normal administrative assistants are being exemplified by the so-called new normal leaders through capacitating themselves through their sound/effective decision making. We must understand what they need to know, what to prepare and what actions to do in designing a realistic strategic plan for flexible learning for schools. COVID-19 pandemic is indeed a litmus challenge for the Department of Education.

My favorite thing about accounting By LOVELY MARYGOLD A. CALATRAVA Administrative Assistant III Senior Bookkeeper Tangub City Division Office

MY favorite thing about being an accountant is the thankfulness of my superiors and the sense of relief I bring them. Let’s face it. Being an accounting professional can sometimes be a thankless job. The work is demanding, technology can be frustrating and clients don’t always appreciate the hard work that goes into managing their books, taxes, payroll etc. But we know that accountants are special people. We’re hard workers, critical thinkers, amazing problem solvers. And we deserve to celebrate for all the great things we’re doing in the

world. I love puzzles and being an accountant lets me solve puzzles for a living. I secretly love diving in to that pile of knots and turning it into a beautiful set of books. The long-term relationships I have built here in DepEd have been very rewarding. I love public accounting for two reasons: I know I will continue to be challenged to grow and learn. And I love working with new cloud technology. The new cloud software makes accounting so much easier and faster and I believe our government appreciates that.

and one each on the arm. Uy died instantaneously while sitting on a reclined chair on the quarry house overlooking the barangay San Simon river. The river served as the border of the Pagatpat and San Simon villages. The caretaker, Tabalan, was shot on the head with his body slumped at the rear-left of the service pickup owned by Uy. The driver identified as Rubie Alayuay y Nahial, told police investigators that he was relieving in the comfort room when the shooting took place. “Samtang naa ko sa CR nadunggan nako ang andar sa motorseklo nga nihunong ug dunay nangutana kang “Tawee” kung pila ang presyo sa usa ka load nga graba, dayon nisunod ang mga buto sa pusil, nahadlok ko mao wala ko nigawas sa CR” (I was relieving in the comfort room (CR) when I heard a motorcycle stopped and asked the price

of a truckload of sand and gravel, then gun fires followed, I did not come out because of fear), Alayuay told the police. He said that he came out only when the motorcycle was already far. Aside from being the son of the incumbent lawmaker, Uy was the first barangay councilor of Carmen and was acting as the officerin-charge of the barangay in lieu of his reportedly sickly mother Lorna, the incumbent barangay chairwoman. Police investigators recovered several shells of a .45 caliber pistol in the crime scene, now subject of ballistic examination. Sereñas said that the police noticed that based on the shells recovered, the suspects were armed with two .45 caliber pistols and investigators were trying to establish, which of the pistol killed Uy.
