AVAO CITY — “Sometimes in our lives, we find ourselves to be a leader but sometimes in our lives, we need to stand beside another leader,” Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said as she explained to the crowd of supporters in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on Sunday, why she opted to run for Vice President and why she chose former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. as her Presidential candidate. The mayor said Marcos is qualified having served as Governor, Congressman and Senator. Marcos led the crowd in chanting “Bongbong-Sara, Bongbong-Sara” during the “UniTeam” caravan of Bongbong Sara, declaring that the

Oneness and Stillness with Nature

Look at a flower or a tree and feel the stillness that it emanates without any mental conceptualization. As you feel oneness with nature and all of God’s creation and unfettered from controlling voice in mind on how to exploit these resources for instant wealth and power as dictated by an extractive economic and marketing system, then, a higher intelligence sets-in, presenting a higher dimension of life that you are not just a separate fragment in the vast universe but one with that spacious awareness of oneness. Oneness in all of God’s creation. This is foremost in the hierarchy of the laws of nature as everything is inter-connected. No sun, no air, no water, no life. No forest, no river, no crops, no food. It is that simple. Exploit and kill the forest ecosystem and all other ecosystems will perish with all the billions of flora and fauna that have been there for billions of years even before the homo sapiens came into being. By seniority, these plants and animals that constitute the megadiversity have more rights than the humans to exist. In just one hundred years, these life forms per-

ish because they have been sacrificed to the altar of greed and profit by adhering to the growth-at-all cost development paradigm that has given way to unbridled materialism and consumerism in utter disregard to life’s spirituality. Well, am not surprised. The last century saw humans killing each other reaching more than 150 million deaths because of two world wars and the so-called cleansing of Hitler and Pol Pot. Such brutality of the homo sapiens to their own kindred has manifested the diabolic nature of man unseen in other species. If humans can do that to their own kind, more so to those they described as lower forms of life notwithstanding the truism that all life is sacred. Even Gaia (mother earth) is now dying because of the diabolic acts committed by the new comer specie called man whose existence came about 700 million years ago while plants and animals existed for more than three billion years. Now that 17 million hectares of our dipterocarp forests gone in our country, the rest of the eco-systems are dying if not yet dead. Twenty major rivers in the

Orlan R. Ravanera

country are now biologically dead. As you travel from Cagayan de Oro to Butuan City, look below the bridges. Either no water or the water is polluted, going to the sea that are polluting the bays. Where are our coral reefs, the homes to fishery and marine life? About 75% totally damaged and only 5% is in excellent condition. Where are our mangroves, the spawning grounds of the fish? Almost gone having been converted into residential or commercial centers. According to studies, the poorest of the poor are our fisherfolks and coastal communities as 10 out of the 13 major bays in the country are biologically dead. This is very painful in an archipelago which was once described as “the center of the center of marine life on earth.” This is in addition to the fact that by unit area, the Phillipines has been tagged as the richest on earth in terms of endemicity. As we lost our ecological wealth, poverty is now glaring in the rural areas where three out of four See NATURE, page 13

approved Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for use in people 12 years old and above. Last Friday, the city government also started administering booster shots. However, due to the limited availability of vaccines, the boosters were initially limited to frontline health workers. Despite the decline in Covid cases, Mayor Jaime R. Fresnedi reminded residents not to let their guards down and to continue to observe basic health protocols – like frequent washing of hands, wearing face masks and observing physical distancing. Emergency employment opportunities Labor Secretary Bello III recently turned over to the Muntinlupa city government personal protective equipment and tools to reduce work-related hazards during the conduct of various community-based projects. ALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon— Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin M. Andanar said adopting the rules on Freedom of Information (FOI) will increase reportage of corruption as it will facilitate the right of access to governmental information. “Transparency is our most powerful weapon in the fight against corruption. Fostering the Freedom of Information is a big step toward strengthening President Rodrigo Duterte’s war against corruption as this boosts information sharing meant to enhance accountability in government’s acts, transactions, and decisions,” the Communications Secretary said during the Bukidnon leg of the 2021 Transparency Roadshow, Tuesday.

Mon-Tue, November 22-23, 2021

PCOO Secretary Martin M. Andanar explains the pivotal role that the Freedom of Information (FOI) plays in demanding honesty in public service. (BGE/PIA-10/Bukidnon)

Andanar emphasized that FOI is the President’s Executive Order No. 2 signed in 2016 during his 1st month in office. In essence, he said, a major obstacle to good governance is the entrenched lack of accountability within the government. “Thus, the FOI initiative not

only prevents corruption by showing where people's taxes go but also empowers all Filipinos to participate in government affairs,” the Secretary briefly said. He cited FOI’s help in strengthening the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) and the Presidential Anti-Corruption

Commission’s goal of reducing government red tape and corruption. “Transparency and accountability, particularly in government, have never been more alive in the Philippines, and it is only under the Duterte Administration that we have put forward such a cause, as part of our

fight against all forms of corruption,” he added. To highlight the FOI program’s progress, Secretary Andanar, Krizia Casey Avejar of the FOI Project Management Office, and Bukidnon State University President Dr. Oscar Cabañelez signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate FOI into the university’s curriculum. PCOO also provided library materials designed to aid librarians and faculty in influencing, networking, and leading the campuswide use of FOI as a tool for academic research. “May all of you continue to support the PCOO and the Duterte Administration in our activities, such as this Roadshow, as we continue the drive to end corruption,” Andanar said. The Transparency Roadshow primarily discussed the Task Force on Zero Hunger,

FOI, Duterte Legacy, and the government's responses to COVID-19 with the local chief executives, national government agencies, academe, information officers, multi-sectoral representatives, and the media. It also focused on the all-encompassing campaign of the President's achievements on the key three pillars of peace and order, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation. Northern Mindanao executives who joined in the event were National Housing Authority Regional Manager Engr. Rolando Teves, Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Director Mari-Flor Dollaga, the Mayors, 403rd Infantry 'Peacemaker' Brigade Commander BGen. Ferdinand Barandon, and Bukidnon Police Director Col. Jun Mark Lagare. (RLRB/PIA-10/ Bukidnon)

Andanar is Outstanding Filipino Luminary awardee

The EspiCom Group congratulates SEC. MARTIN ANDANAR as a recipient of Outstanding Filipino Luminary Awards 2021 for NATIONAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE! Secretary Martin Andanar completed his Bachelor of Social and Political Studies and Film and Media Studies at the Federation University in Australia and continued on as Senior Executive Fellow in Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government.

These were subsequently followed with different stints at Georgetown University, taking up an Executive Course in Public and Non-Profit Management; at Northern Illinois University for an International Visitors Leadership Program; the National University of Singapore for Communications in Public Policy Delivery and Countering Violent Extremism; and finally a Masters Degree in Entrepreneurship from

the Asian Institute of Management. He has—at various times—been a TV News Anchor, radio commentator, podcaster, video & audio blogger and a voice-over artist. None of which compares to his present position as the head of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and the duties attendant to it which include his

groundbreaking projects and policies like the Freedom of Information, Presidential Task Force on Media Security, the Mindanao Media Hub, Government Strategic Communications Academy & others. He has been commissioned in the Reserve Force, Armed Forces of the Philippines with the rank of COMMANDER in the

Philippine Navy. He has also been recently recognized as Media Hero of the Year by the world’s premiere business awardgiving body, the Stevie Awards. But more than the academic and professional achievements, he has remained a probinsyano at heart, a boy from the islands who—to these days—speaks Bisaya like he never left.

The award is given to Secretary Martin Andanar for being the catalyst of effective media through his current undertaking as the Head of Presidential Communications Operation Office. His clear-cut approach in communicating the real status of the wholeof-government programs and efforts have bridged the information gap between the Filipino people and its civil servants.

Commercial buildings, on the other hand, may be built up to five-storeys high exclusively for commercial purposes only such as office or boutique hotels. “Since the township is just conveniently located along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), and just 20 kilometers away from

Metro Manila, this will be the nearest business district outside of the capital where companies and businesses can build their shops and offices. We also encourage entrepreneurs to become part of this global business district, which will soon be just 20 minutes away from the much-anticipated New Manila International Airport in Bulacan,” says Noli D. Hernandez, executive vice president for sales and marketing, Megaworld. The Northwin Main Street will be carefully masterplanned for connectivity and mobility with promenades and walking parks to be integrated between blocks of the district. Around 44% of the district will be allocated for green and open spaces. Leading to See MEGAWORLD, page 13

son Dr. Michelle Schlosser said that Alert Level 2 does not impose restrictions on the movement of people across all age groups. Last week, she reminded parents that children can become potential spreaders of the virus. She stressed that the threat of the pandemic continues even after the city noted a dramatic decrease in the number of confirmed

COVID-19 cases. Schlosser said that there is no assurance that the children could properly wear their face masks and observe physical distancing while inside the malls. As of November 19, Duterte said the city has reached a total of 1,010,811 individuals jabbed with the first dose and 908,101 with the second dose or 75.7% of the target of 1.2 million

to attain herd immunity. Out of this total, 39,505 children aged 12 to 17 received the first dose and 70 for the second dose. According to the Department of Health-Davao, Davao City reported three new COVID-19 cases as of November 21, bringing the total cases to 53,714 with 302 active, 51,637 recovered and 1,775 dead. Davao City bypass road starts excavation for PH longest tunnel

Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa attended the joint site inspection organized by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on November 19, 2021, in Davao City to witness the start of tunnel boring activity for the 2.3-kilometer twin tunnels of the Davao City Bypass Road. DPWH Secretary Roger Mercado and Build, Build, Build (BBB) Chief Implementer Undersecretary Emil Sadain joined Amb. Koshikawa and representatives of Japan’s leading tunnel construction companies in surveying the site, as the drill machines began excavation for the country’s first-ever long-distance mountain tunnel. The twin tunnels are a key component of the 45.5-kilometer Davao City Bypass Construction Project in Southern Mindanao, which will begin in Barangay Sirawan, Toril, Davao City and end in Barangay J.P. Laurel, Panabo City. Once completed, the tunnels will help reduce travel time from

almost two hours via the Pan-Philippine Highway to just 49 minutes. The project’s tunneling activity will use specialized equipment such as drill jumbo, concrete spraying machine and articulated dump hauler, which will work simultaneously at the north and south portals to construct the 2 tunnels with a height of 8 meters and a width of 10 meters. The tunnel is part of Contract Package 1-1 covering 10.7-kilometer of a four-lane highway, which also includes the construction of 3 pairs of bridges, 2 underpasses, 2 overpasses, 4 at-grade intersections, and 12 box-culverts for drainage. The Davao City Bypass Road is another quality infrastructure project financed by Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the Government of Japan with Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) Loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Alienation in Education Due to the Pandemic By: LOVENELA R. SIMBAJON Teacher I Bulua National High School

In times of crisis, a comprehensive approach to education that covers children’ learning, social, and emotional needs is critical. Due to school closures caused by the current COVID-19 pandemic, kids from a variety of backgrounds who are more vulnerable are less likely to receive the support and additional resources they require, and the gap between students who face additional challenges and those who do not may deepen. Closures can also affect students’ feelings of belonging to schools and

self-worth, both of which are critical for inclusion in education. Beyond school closures, it explores the topic of school re-openings by outlining countries’ current policies and proposing policy pointers intended at ensuring that the epidemic does not further obstruct vulnerable pupils’ inclusion in educational systems. Not only is the current coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic affecting people’s health, but it’s also affecting how they learn, work, and live. One of the most significant issues posed by COVID-19 is how to

modify an educational system based on physical schooling. Although the majority of governments are making significant efforts to assure access to continuing education, their capability for high-quality learning, particularly for the most disadvantaged, varies greatly. The importance of teachers in education cannot be overstated. Teachers are the most significant school-side component in student learning, according to research. As a result, how governments support teachers during

school closures will almost certainly have an impact on student learning. The global pandemic is anticipated to produce the greatest significant disruption in educational opportunities in at least a century. Students’ academics and lifestyles will be influenced in a variety of ways, some of which are still unknown. In the short term, because necessary physical separation measures will interrupt or have already disrupted their ability to attend school, they will learn less than they would have otherwise.

“The New Normal Series: Is There an Uncertainty for This Year’s School Opening?” JOEMAR GOMEZ Teacher III Villanueva National High School

Over the past few months, the Department of Education has been very adamant about the opening of classes for S. Y. 2020-2021. From August 24, the school opening has been moved to October 5, the year of 2020. As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been overwhelming our everyday aspect of living, DepEd has been also facing all-inclusive actions to fully prepare for the incoming academic semesters. Although private, standalone schools and universities have already started their online classes, the agency is planning more comprehensively to counterbalance and regard all the challenges students may face once their classes start. In the Memorandum issued by the Office of the President of the Philippines to Sec.

Leonor Briones, it hereby instructed that all preparations for the virtual opening of classes for the academic year 2020-2021, must be made smooth and successful, as the constant commitment to the implementation of the Learning Continuity Plan. To acknowledge everyone’s incertitude, I believe that the school opening for this year’s school opening will set to sail successfully. By realizing the efforts and commitment in part by DepEd, the teachers, partnered organizations, community groups, stakeholders both civil and in position, the continuity learning will be effective and guaranteed to uphold its essence throughout the entire year. The agency has been clear to the interdiction of face-to-face classes,

and have been preparing for the different learning modalities, relative and fit for all students’ accessibilities. All modes are ensured with the absence of sustained face-to-face interaction--this then aims for a flexible type of learning. Furthermore, with the main barriers, we face due to the pandemic are now in address, with all join efforts, we all must understand and support this learning continuity plan to stabilize the new normal where face-to-face is nearly impossible and social distancing is a must. Despite the crisis we face, the valuableness of education must remain on the daily basis, so to kickstart for the upcoming school opening, all must set aside differences and establish cooperation.

(DPWH) particularly its Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office recently turnedover the newlycompleted two-storey multi-purpose building to the barangay council of Poblacion, this city. In a simple turnover ceremony, DPWH Assistant District Engineer (ADE) Saidale Mitmug handed over the key of responsibility to Poblacion Punong Barangay Anthony Pacaña. “We are thankful to Congressman Frederick Siao for this beautiful building. We intend to use this as our Barangay Health Center so our residents can have a bigger and better facility for immunizations and other health related

activities”, revealed Pacaña. The two-storey building was built by Jamray Builders and Enterprises for the contract amount of P3.9-million. “With this new building, we hope barangay Poblacion will be able to deliver better health services to its constituents which is very important now especially during this pandemic”, expressed ADE Mitmug. The ribbon-cutting rites was also attended by members of the barangay council, DPWH personnel, staff from the lone congressional district of Iligan City and barangay health workers. (VNL/DPWHPIO)

Teachers’ Task in the New Normal By: ALEX ABEJERO VENTERO Teacher III Agusan Elementary School

It is true that the current pandemic and concern over a potential second outbreak have disrupted traditional s cho oling practices, but the why of creating the new normal should go beyond the current pandemic and delve deeper than fear of illness. Reimagining education in a new way could pave the way for more equal and high-quality education for all young people. The disruption caused by the epidemic has raised awareness of fresh opportunities for revitalizing our educational system and ushering young learners into the future on a fairer playing field. The school disruption has forced all education stakeholders to acknowledge that what matters is the recognition of children’ different needs and the discovery of ways to address those needs using resources other than the instructors themselves. The teacher’s primary task is now to guide stu-

dents to seek those possibilities. This new normal will hopefully drive education authorities to design a sustainable framework for a needs-based curriculum and provide a repertoire of learning modules. Lesson learned during the current school disruption should drive educators to change their perspectives and practices. Reshaping schooling perspective and practices should deliberate on the why, who, what and how of education. The abrupt disappearance of the traditional classroom stage, as well as the isolation of each learner in his or her own space, should motivate teachers to relearn old habits and gain new abilities for alternative types of learning interactions. Teachers were forced to realize that they needed to reach out to each student individually and assess their teaching performance as a result of the pandemic.

The Philippines’ open finance policy By HERVIVONIE B. OLING Administrative Assistant II Division of Tangub City

IN an interconnected world which even hyperdigitized due to the constraints of the pandemic, open finance allows everyday Filipinos to perform their financial transactions in their various financial accounts across different platforms in a seamless, convenient and safe manner. These can be seen through inter-bank transactions, faster account creation processes, access to wider financial products like insurance and investments and many more. Open finance therefore is a necessary step to fully digitize and revitalize the financial industry, taking into consideration that customers now expect interoperability of all financial products and platforms. The country aims to promote an enabling environment that fosters innovation, encourages competition and advances financial

inclusion w hi le s afeguarding the integrity and stability of the financial system. Open finance is guaranteed to safeguard of information, actual fees and charges related to the access of information and performance of transactions, fair and equitable terms and conditions and products and ser vices appropriate to the capacity and risk appetite of the client and problem resolution procedures. With respect to data privacy, open finance relies on two key data privacy rights: the right to access and the right to data portability with the former being the right to reasonable access of one’s personal information upon demand and the latter being the right to obtain one’s personal information stored with another data processor and be transferred to another data processor.

Chasing Changes: Creative Adaptability through Innovation by: CYDEL P. VALMORES

The novelty of crafting varied innovations in response to the dynamic needs and welfare of the learners in the new normal has been the center of emphasis in every school since we are facing the verge of the pandemic and schools should be responsive and adaptive to the educational setbacks. Jasaan District has the profound vision to innovate through seeing the need to develop the leadership and governance skills of the school heads in unifying internal and external stakeholders, to innovate through assessing the needs of the teaching personnel on how to effectively deliver the teaching learning process and developing learner’ individuality, to innovate through considering the need of the learners in honing their knowledge, skills, attitude and apply it in the real setting, to innovate through evaluating the need of the parents in adapting in the new normal as partners of the teachers in assisting learning. Innovativeness requires thorough planning and series of resilient envisioning as it marks a vital impact not only to the learners but to the education in entirety. This unprecedented crisis challenged everyone in the educational sector, thus, the need for innovation is a necessity. The use of technological advancement has been the contrivance in promoting

and delivering teaching and learning now a days, however, being innovative does not end in using these technology alone but empowering students to grasp lifelong learning and to become an agent of change through utilizing technology. Innovation is very much vital in education because it empowers the presence of the teachers and learners to look for opportunities beyond the walls, to go beyond what is seen by the eyes, thus, encourages us to research, to explore to unveil new things, to solve problems that entail creativity and are resultoriented. Creating innovations can broaden the network of the school in terms of partnership with stakeholders that convey positive and engaging activities that can lead to a greater impact towards our learners. Innovation is the key in bridging educational gaps created by this pandemic. It deepens our understanding to the situation and challenges our minds to brainstorm varied solutions to the identified problems and to organize approaches, strategies, and processes that is updated, timely and responsive to the needs of time. Thus, school personnel must possess a flexible mindset to come up with a fresh viewpoint and a clear vision to innovate to have a tangible result in educational progress.

Lacson Presidency to Prioritize Tough Stance vs WPS Bullying A tough stance against bullying in the West Philippine Sea, anchored on maintaining the balance of power in the area, will be prioritized under a Lacson presidency, Sen. Panfilo "Ping" M. Lacson said Monday. Lacson said that while the Philippines should maintain trade relations with countries like China, it cannot sacrifice its sovereignty and sovereign rights for this. "Tinuturing nating kaibigan ang China pero ang turing ba nila sa atin kaibigan? Dapat equal footing, hindi one way (We treat China as a friend, but does China treat us that way? Friendship should be on equal footing, not one-way)," he said in an interview on Radyo 5. "Meron tayong sovereign rights sa EEZ natin kaya dapat i-assure natin na lahat ng nations that freedom of navigation will be observed and upheld. Ang China wala sa kanila ang freedom of navigation (We have sovereign rights on our exclusive economic zone, we can assure all nations that we will observe and uphold that freedom of navigation, something China does not do)," he added. When asked if he will treat the West Philippine Sea situation as a priority issue if he wins the 2022 presidential race, Lacson said he has always done so. "Maski di pa ako kandi-

dato, ito ang gusto ko mangyari, ma-enhance ang ating alliance hindi lang sa US kundi sa ibang (Even when I was not yet a candidate, I had always pushed for enhancing our alliances with our allies including the US, to maintain the balance of power)," he said. "Records will bear this out: Maski di pa ako kandidato, ito ang gusto ko mangyari, ma-enhance ang ating alliance hindi lang sa US kundi sa ibang (Records will bear this out: Even when I was not yet a candidate, I had always pushed for enhancing our alliances with our allies including the US, to maintain the balance of power)," he said. He said the balance of power would discourage countries like China from making incursions and from bullying smaller nations' ships in the area. Lacson cited information reaching him that China once "challenged" a US warship passing in the area. When the US vessel's captain invoked the right of innocent passage, the Chinese vessel did not even block or attack the vessel with water cannons like it did two Philippine vessels headed for Ayungin Shoal last Nov. 16. "Doon natin nakikita na pag may balance of power sa WPS, hindi talaga magkakagiyera at mapapangalagaan natin ang ating sovereign

rights and territorial integrity (From this episode, we see that if there is balance of power in the WPS, there would be no war and we can maintain our sovereign rights and territorial integrity)," Lacson said. Meanwhile, Lacson said the timing is now right to revisit the PH-US Mutual Defense Treaty, after the US expressed willingness to enhance efforts toward an international law-based maritime order, including freedom of navigation. Lacson also reiterated he is not favoring the US or any other country, stressing that the Philippines' foreign policy is always anchored on national interest. "Malinaw sa West Philip-

pine Sea, ang national interest natin ma-exercise ang sovereign rights within the EEZ at sovereignty natin within 12 nautical miles (It is clear that in the West Philippine Sea, our national interest dictates that we exercise our sovereign rights within the EEZ and sovereignty within 12 nautical miles)," he said. Lacson, who is running for President under Partido Reporma, has long pushed for a balance of power in the West Philippine Sea, with the Philippines strengthening its ties with its allies that are militarily strong and have an interest in maintaining the balance of power as they value the freedom of navigation in the area.

“Shedding Light on Sidelining Professional Teachers” JOEMAR GOMEZ Teacher III Villanueva National High School

'Moonlighting' is the term coined that refers to an individual obtaining a second job whilst having regular employment. It’s getting two fulltime jobs at the same time, which it becomes an ultimate juggle between hard work, effort, and especially time becomes a double, arduous battle for the person. The teaching profession alone requires long periods and work, so the percentage of moonlighting teachers doesn’t even contend in numbers in all parts of the world. Nevertheless, it will never be an issue in the Philippines since DepEd has already established a memorandum on the absolute prohibition of the Moonlighting and Private Practice of the Teaching Job. be the case but many professional teachers have ‘part-time’ sidelines, these are minor jobs in which they can easily flex the schedules under their main profession; where they can do it on their free and vacant times without much hassle. Examples of these jobs include online jobs such as tutoring, teaching, translating, writing and editing, or even online selling. These sidelines majorly are done via online platforms which can be easy and attainable to perform amid the demanding prior profession, yet these can also be done without the use of online connectivity. The reason for having extra sidelines may point out their cause of finding another means to make extra income since most teacher populations face salary deductions, loan payments, and other endless financial subtraction

from their original salary. Then again, these educators who still have another job aside from their profession display great diligence just to provide and earn for their families and themselves. We should think of the extra hours they add to their workloads just to stabilize their income. Moreover, their health and sacrifices just to equate their obligations. As long as it doesn’t cause any conflict of interest, does not violate the ‘double compensation’ policy upon their respective guideline employments, with the job not hindering to the official rendered office hours by the particular sector and does not become the reason for the disadvantage of their oaths and duties, then they need the support they deserve for being outstanding servicemen for their country.

Globe in advanced discussions with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres to form a joint venture on Globe’s data center in the Philippines Globe (PSE:GLO), a leading digital platform in the Philippines, with major interests in telecommunications, financial technology, digital marketing solutions, venture capital funding for startups, entertainment, and virtual healthcare, has signed an exclusivity agreement with Singapore-headquartered ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (“STT GDC”), one of the fastestgrowing data center providers globally, on the carve-out of Globe’s data center business in Philippines (“Globe DC”). Under the exclusivity agreement, Globe and STT GDC will enter into discussions and aim to sign definitive agreements related to Globe DC. Globe, through its whollyowned subsidiary Innove Communications, Inc., has been operating data centers since 2001, and has since expanded its portfolio nationwide, serving both its internal needs and corporate clients across various industries. Globe data centers are globally competitive, advanced, standardcompliant and highly secure facilities offering world-class data, network, telecommunication and IT services ranging from carrier-neutral colocation space, managed security, mission-critical applications and cloud solutions. The portfolio is expected to grow as Globe continues to expand its footprint in anticipation of large demand requirements in the future. Globe data center facilities have midterm expansion potential of up to 45MW power. Globe believes a partnership with STT GDC is the next important step that will accelerate Globe’s data center growth strategy and market

share position in the Philippines, enabling them to take advantage of the structural growth trends in the region and creating value for key stakeholders in the longer term. The transaction is expected to take the form of a joint venture, in which Globe will remain a significant shareholder. The investment into Globe DC is fully consistent with Globe’s long-term strategy of its data center business through partnering with a leading data center operator to create a top tier data center business in the Philippines and regionally. More importantly, this transaction reinforces Globe’s efforts to innovate into a leading digital solutions group that provides connectivity and solutions to power and enable a robust digital ecosystem for the Filipino. “The Philippines is strategically positioned to capture the booming global demand for data centers. Our strong track record and extensive customer reach, together with STT GDC’s deep operational expertise, position us well to be a leading data center company in the Philippines.” Ernest L. Cu, President and CEO of Globe commented. “Our potential joint venture with

STT GDC will therefore be a significant multi-year growth driver for Globe and will further drive our transformation into a digital platform, this time into B2B space, after success of B2C with GCash.” Discussions on such opportunities are ongoing and there is no certainty that such discussions will lead to definitive transactions. Globe will make relevant announcements in accordance with the rules of the Philippines Stock Exchange as and when appropriate.

once again. Marcos and running mate Sara Duterte spoke before a crowd during their “Red Day UniTeam Caravan” in Tagum City. Davao de Oro governor Jayvee Tyron Uy, who is a co-founder of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) posted on social media a selfie, showing Marcos and Duterte standing on the stage together before a crowd of supporters. “It is my great pride and honor to give the introduction of our next Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, Mayor Inday Sara Duterte during their first #UniTeam visitation in Tagum City, Davao del Norte! I take pride as one of the witnesses of this historic event,” Uy said. Marcos, son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., is running under Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), which adopted Duterte as his running mate shortly after the presidential daughter filed her candidacy for Vice President under Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as a substitute candidate. President Rodrigo Duterte, who filed his candidacy for senator instead of Vice President on November 15, the last day for filing of certificates of candidacy for substitution, wondered why his daughter filed her COC for Vice President when she is the frontrunner in surveys on Presidential candidates. He said this was likely the

decision of Marcos, whom he criticized to be a “weak leader.” The President is supporting the candidacy of his long-time aide, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go who withdrew from the Vice Presidential race after Sara Duterte filed her COC for the same post. Go, however, filed his COC for President under the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS). Davao del Norte is the province of Anthony del Rosario, Secretary-General of the regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago which was headed by Mayor Duterte until she resigned to join Lakas-CMD to run for Vice President. She, however, rejoined HnP a few days later. It is also the province of Marcos’ ally, Antonio Floirendo, whose father Antonio Sr., was referred ot as among the cronies of Marcos’ father, Ferdinand, who was ousted by People Power in 1986. happened to be his own son was a certain Marjun Hallazgo, also of the same barangay. The victim died a few hours later at the hospital due to the fatal hacking that he sustained. Police Major Marstar Lorenzo, chief of Jasaan Municipal Police Station, in an interview with Magnum Radio said that based on their initial investigation, the suspect and his son were having a drinking spree with some friends

when suddenly the suspect and his son figured into a heated argument. It was not clear, however, at this time the main discussion they had started that resulted in a heated argument that also later ended into the killing of the father of his own son. Investigation also disclosed that after a heated argument the son disappeared from the crime scene. But a few minutes later he came back bringing with him a jungle knife and he hit his father, wounding his leg. The father, investigation continued, reportedly retaliated and also hacked his son to the fatal points which resulted in his son’s untimely demise. Major Lorenzo said a case of Parricide is now filed in court against the father. If found guilty, the father will suffer from a life imprisonment that will be meted against him.

Sara Duterte resigned from her local party Hugpong ng Pagbabago, swore an oath to Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, and filed her candidacy for Vice president last week. In Cagayan de Oro, f o r m e r P h i v i d e c Ad ministrator Jose Gabriel “Pompee” La Viña filed his C oC on November 15, after substituting for lawyer Florentino Dumlao III of Lakas-CMD. Another lawyer Gil Banaag of PDP-Laban withdrew his COC. Just last week, in a press conference at the Cagayan de Oro Press

Club, Banaag said that he will withdraw his COC awaiting a replacement from La Viña. Mendez laments that the countr y’s p olitical party system is in such bad shape due to the lack of respect for the party system. “Partylist is no longer the practice now, so this is now the result,” Mendez said. Mendez attributed these political turncoats to the country’s departure from a two-party system. “It’s a sari-sari, there are parties that are a mixture of everything- they have different line-ups with different presidents,” Mendez said. “There is really a difficulty now of knowing to which party or their loyalty belongs,” Mendez said. Senatorial candidates from different parties are also “guest” or “adopted” candidates from various presidential aspirants who also belong to different political parties. Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao’s senate candidates include guest candidates Raffy Tulfo, former vice president Jejomar Binay, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Senator Joel Villanueva, former senators Francis Escudero and Loren Legarda, and former Senate Secretary Lutgardo Barbo. Escudero, Zubiri, Villanueva, Legarda, Binay are also guest candidates of Senators Panfilo Lacson and Tito Sotto tandem. “We have to look at this is happening, this is quite different from the previous administrations. You can file and move to another position. The short description of this is “Chop Suey or Sari-sari,” Mendez said.

N LESS than two years, startup TEASCAPE weathered the global pandemic which cast millions of small businesses by the wayside, to emerge as one of the success stories for freshmen entrepreneurs in Cagayan de Oro City. “I started Teascape in March 2020, just about when the global pandemic lockdown started,” said budding businesswoman Danica Sudaria, 23, who admits to having a hankering for milk tea and savory snacks, on top of a passion for business. Danica is the eldest daughter of Dante M. Sudaria, president and CEO of the Sudaria Group of Publications (BusinessWeek Mindanao, Mindanao Daily and Metro Cagayan de Oro Times) and Rose Mary D. Sudaria, Ph.D., vice president for finance of the publications group. She graduated with a B.S. Tourism degree

from Liceo de Cagayan University in 2019. Did her parents approve of her going into business? “Full paternal support for a rising beloved daughter for her to stand alone amidst the pandemic,” her father replied, recalling the couple’s struggles not quite 12 years ago when he dared to venture into his own business with BusinessWeek Mindanao, which eventually spawned two more publications, including

January 2020 when I earned enough to have my branded milk tea included in my cousin’s café,” she said. Two months later she set up her first standalone Teascape Café in Barangay Tablon, followed by another in Barangay Bugo four months later.

To ramp up business further, Danica came up with an affordable franchising scheme to share and multiply her success with other similarly minded entrepreneurs. “I offered a franchise that was very affordable, with quality milk tea, instagrammable design, and reusable cups to keep costs down and help preserve our environment,” she said. “Now we have 12 Teascape Cafes with more coming up. Soon we will expand our milk tea menu with five other varieties of snacks.” Next on the schedule is joining a mall expo, soon after her wedding

this December. Danica attributes the success of Teascape despite the onset of the pandemic and the crippling lockdowns even if it’s not an essential product, because people develop a hankering for their milk tea which has made it a regular feature of millennials and Gen Zs go-to menus whatever the time or season. “I thought of the name Teascape from tea and escape, so that it represents something we run to for comfort during sad times, or celebration during happy ones, so Teascape is your go-to drink and place whatever, whenever the weather.”

Medical, health experts upbeat on a healthier, safer Christmas for Filipinos this year M

Urge families and kids to get their COVID-19 shots on National Vaccination Day

EDICAL and health experts are optimistic that the country may enjoy a healthier, safer Christmas this year with an opportunity to get the whole family vaccinated in the upcoming 3-day National Vaccination Day on November 29-30 and December 1. The Philippine Medical Association’s (PMA) campaign, themed “Masaya ang Pasko ng Bakunadong Pamilyang Pilipino,” is in line with the government’s drive to get 15 million more Filipinos inoculated during the three-day nationwide event. With the long Christmas holiday’s tradition of gathering entire clans together, PMA President Dr. Benny Atienza remarked that their younger members should also receive protection against COVID-19. He expressed his “hope that children be vaccinated and we encourage parents, barangays, and LGUs to join us in our

National Vaccination Day. Public and private entities are working as one to disseminate benefits of vaccination.” Dr. Atienza added that vaccine hesitancy can be overcome by continuous dissemination of correct medical information to all demographics, young and old: “The PMA believes in teaching empowerment. We will continue implementing innovative activities that will raise standard health education among young children and their respective communities.” Dr. Lulu Bravo, Executive Director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV), agreed about teaching children about vaccination at an early age because “they can lead us to the end of this pandemic.” She further urged the adult members of society, especially the parents, to “be a hero, by saving your lives and your loved ones through vaccination.” Reason for children vaccination

There are pressing, if little-known, medical reasons to include children and teens in COVID-19 vaccination. Although perceived as “more low risk, they can get very sick with COVID-19. They can also get short and long-term complications,” explained Dr. Nina G. Gloriani, Chairperson of the Vaccine Expert Panel, Technical Working Group for COVID-19 Vaccines, Department of Science and Technology. “Children can spread COVID-19 via droplets. We have to underscore the fact that unvaccinated children can be asymptomatic.” Dr. Gloriani added that COVID-19 children vaccination had already started with those who have comorbidities, focusing first on the 16-17-yearolds, and then proceeding to the 12-to-14-year-old demographic. She also acknowledged that “almost 50% of the targeted Filipino individuals have received their first doses, 74

million doses in total. The most recent is 103 million jabs. The number of jabs a day is a million in the NCR. “ Dr. Eric Tayag, Director of the National Epidemiology Center in the Department of Health (DOH), added that the vaccination of children should be ongoing, not just against COVID-19 but also “preventable diseases. We are having catchup vaccinations on measles, diphtheria, and hemophilia. We protect the children when we vaccinate them.” National recovery Enrique Gonzalez, Founder and Chairman of IPB/Family Vaccines Specialty Clinics (FVSC), affirmed that “Ensuring the safety of vaccines to children is of prime importance.” He also pointed out that SinoVac, the vaccine his company distributes, is doing a global trial on children’s COVID-19 vaccination in several countries. The more agile regulators in nations like Malaysia, Hong

Kong, and Chile have been using SinoVac under the Emergency Use Agreement, acting “quickly in ensuring that kids are protected when they go back to school.” Gonzalez gave another insight on the importance of quick mass vaccination, saying: “It is critical to helping the country recover and get back on its feet. Vaccines prevent severe symptoms and hospitalization. It is important that the public continue to have access to vaccines so we can achieve and maintain herd immunity.” Prior to the pandemic, FVSC has been at the forefront of inoculation against infectious diseases to the marginalized, subsidizing 50,000 vaccinations for the rural poor across more than 18 provinces. Accomplished journalist Niña Corpuz gave her perspective on vaccination as a mother of three kids. Addressing the understandable fears of parents, she said that

“webinars and access to experts and research show that there is no reason to be hesitant. If vaccines come out for younglings, I would be among the first to give vaccines to my children.” Education vs. fake news Finally, amidst the gradual reopening of onsite classes in the country, Dr. Maria Corazon C. Dumlao, Chief of the Department of Education’s Bureau of Learner Support Services – School Health Division, affirmed their support for “pediatric vaccinations against COVID-19. Immunization activities are being conducted with learners continuing during the pandemic.” Other initiatives include allowing schools to become vaccination sites and coming up with strategies related to vaccination campaigns. Miguel Bermundo, Senior Manager of Sustainability and Social Responsibility of Globe Telecom, agreed that education and fighting vaccine disinformation are vital to increasing COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Through their many platforms, programs, and partnerships with groups like UNICEF, “we use our digital resources and network to fight harm against kids online and the proliferation of fake news.” As the National Vaccination Day approaches, Dr. Bravo exhorted the public to be wellinformed and join a health advocacy which can provide a better life for themselves and their families: “We should prepare for a pandemic preparedness plan---this will not be the last. We should value experts’ opinions. Be a vaccine advocate, someone who can lead us to restore vaccine confidence and fight vaccine hesitancy.”
