EVEN as a little boy, I enjoyed staying and playing outside. That was easy because I was born and raised in the deepest province in Germany. To this day, I am a great advocate for preserving nature. Some of previous columns at this corner may confirm that. Honestly, have you ever thought about how beautiful nature is around us? Doesn’t it look just like a painting on canvas? I have many times stood awestruck at the beauty of nature unfolding like magic. Just look at the colors scattered on the sky in the sunset. How versatile the sky is every day. But, nature is quite tricky at times. Nature only reveals its beauty to people who really want to feel nature. You really have to start exploring nature to see its hidden gems. Many times you would have to hike the toughest route or walk the muddiest trail, to see nature at its best. But, the efforts would always be worth it. Nature and its beauty are infinite. You really can see the beauty of nature in all things around you. But, as Plato once said,

‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder,’ it really matters how you see things around you. Some people find beauty and happiness in little things. But, some of us fail to see the beauty of nature around us. Nature is splendid, beginning from the tiny butterflies and flowers to mountains and beaches. It never fails to amuse us. Just open your eyes and look around for a while. You will start seeing the beauty of nature in the very simple things around you. Psalm 104 shows appreciation for every aspect of nature, even creatures like wild goats, lions and whales - just to mention a few. The author of Psalm 104 saw how the world fits together. Everything is in its proper sphere. At night, wild animals hunt; at daybreak humans go out to work. The rain falls, nourishing crops for people and grass for cattle, but also watering the forest to provide a place for birds to nest. No, don’t worry. I don’t live in an illusory world. Let’s put all natural disasters and climate change aside for a moment. Modern people

Klaus Doring

are often preoccupied with the fear of overcrowding and poisoning nature. But you can still find beautiful parts in this country - alone and abandoned. I think, in addition to the mental clarity of being called to our senses, I also believe nature makes people genuinely smarter. Everyone loves having fun and one thing I’ve learned is that nature really does have something fun for everyone. And one more thing: it doesn’t matter if you’re an omnivore, carnivore, vegetarian or vegan… if it weren’t for nature, you wouldn’t have food. Worth to think about it... . +++ Comments, suggestions or questions? Kim’s Dream Daan sa Pagbangon sa Makabagong Panahon

October is Cooperative Month

“Come gather ‘round people wherever you roam and admit that the waters around you have grown. And admit that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone, if your time for you is worth savin’. Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone. For the times they are achangin.” This opening salvo of the song, “The times they are a-changin,” popularized by Bob Dylan in the ’60s, speaks well of the socioeconomic realities besetting Philippine society today, spawned by a highly skewed structural set-up with all the social flaws that go with it. Glaring is dehumanizing poverty, hunger, joblessness, massive corruption, inequities, social injustice which is the logical consequence not just of the pandemic that has put the country in so much disarray but more of a highly skewed societal order where people are poor as they are devoid of power to have access and control over their resources. Who controls? Who profits? Who decides? Only a few elites, conglomerates and oligarchs where economic power begets political power. We have to reckon with a development paradigm that is only successful in consigning so many to live in the slum area and that is assaulting the environment that sustains life.

The lyrics of the song literally warns us of rising waters that have already devastated limbs, lives and properties in a country that is number three in the world worst hit by climate change based on the report by the UN’s Disaster Risk Index. For a determined and united people working together to effect social change and to nurture God’s vanishing creation, a glimmer of hope rises in the horizon. Poverty, hunger, inequities, social injustice and ecological disasters have no match against an empowered people who have come together through their cooperatives to launch a collectivist counter culture. Carrying the theme, “ KO O P E R AT I B A N G MATATAG: Tumutugon sa mga hamon, Daan sa pag Bangon, Nagbibigay Pag-asa sa Makabagong Panahon,” the more than 18,000 active cooperatives nationwide with some 15 million members are joining hands, serving notice to one and all that they have awakened, and through their collective efforts, they will win back the future for their children. These cooperatives are now firmly advancing the essence and DNA of cooperativism which is members-owned (no one shall be left behind); value-based and principles driven (hindi nagkulang sa paninindigan); and most

Orlan R. Ravanera

importantly, sustainability that is ecologically sustainable with social inclusion and good governance devoid of corruption. By virtue of Presidential Proclamation Nol. 493, October is their month and will therefore carry out activities to put cooperativism in the public imagination and consciousness, anchored on the truism that cooperativism is the only democratic process now that can liberate the people from the pangs of hunger and poverty. October is the month of the poor and the hungry as it reels-off punctuated with important celebrations that put to the fore issues of poverty and hunger and what are being done to resolve these pressing issues by mobilizing their collective potentials, energies and experiences. October 16 is World Food Day by virtue of the United Nations’ Resolution while October 17 is the Day of Overcoming Extreme Poverty. October is also the month of the Indigenous Peoples who are now the poorest of the poor as their Ancestral Domains have been land-grabbed and if they resist, they are being killed. In fact, in the last See COOPERATIVE, page 11

Refunds over PHP 8 billion as of end-Sept CEBU Pacific (CEB) has cleared all the refund complaints that were filed at the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) as the country’s leading airline continued to prioritize its customers by overhauling its systems and augmenting its refund-

Unfortunately, firms will have to endure the disruption as supply pressures show no signs of slowing,” Patel added. Despite rebounding last month, Philippine factories noted that virus-related restrictions continue to hamper production. MANILA – The Londonbased information and analytics firm IHS Markit reported Friday that Philippine manufacturers were able to rebound in September as the government eased community quarantine restrictions. The country’s manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) in September reached 50.9, above the neutral score of 50. IHS Markit noted that the factory activities’ score in September was the highest in six months. The manufacturing index was at 46.4 in August when Metro Manila was reverted

to the most stringent community quarantine measure while nearby provinces were placed under stricter quarantine protocols. “A number of factories and businesses resumed their operations. However, the domestic and international demand environment remained challenging,” IHS Markit economist Shreeya Patel said. IHS Markit said supply chains were also affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) restrictions abroad. GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION ACADEMY EYES OFFERING COURSES TO BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE MEDIA WORKERS MANILA - Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar on Friday bared long-term plans for the country’s first media training facility, including the proposal to offer technical courses for both public information officers and private media workers. The PCOO, together with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Municipal Government of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, and the Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC), conducted the groundbreaking ceremony of the first Government Communication Academy in the country on September 27, 2021. This signifies the start of the construction of the facility’s main building. “This is the first communications academy that will give more technical skills, know-how to our information officers in the barangay level all the way to the national level,” he said. Secretary Andanar

said that they plan to tie up with the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB), and NBSC to ensure that trainings that will be conducted are aligned with the needs of its beneficiaries. He also said that private media workers are welcome to contribute their expertise. “I believe that if we

offer this kind of institution that can provide executive certificates in communication in radio, television, social media, broadcasting, and news wire distribution then it will be good for everybody,” he said. T he P C O O ch i e f stressed the importance of arming the media against disinformation. “One of the biggest ways to combat this is

MANILA – The national government’s support for the Province of Sulu is one of the factors that allowed the provincial and local government there to maintain its low COVID-19 cases and much improved peace and order situation over the past five years. In an interview during the Network Briefing News today, September 14 hosted by Presidential Communications Secretary Martin M. Andanar, Sulu Governor Abdusakur M. Tan expressed his thanks to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for the assistance of the national government during this pandemic and the seamless implementation of the vaccination rollout in the province. “Maganda ang pagbabakuna rito sa Sulu. In fact, dito sa Sulu nakapagpadala na rito ang pamahalaan na pinamumunuan ni President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, mabilis at pinadalhan kami ng 166,000 doses ng bakuna. [Vaccination is good here in Sulu. In fact, the government led by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has already sent us 166,000 doses of vaccines],” Gov. Tan shared. In the latest data of the provincial government, around 100,000 people

are now vaccinated against COVID-19. They are also eyeing to vaccinate teachers and school staff as soon as possible. “Ngayon, siguro pupuntahan na namin yung mga [nasa] eskwelahan na puwede nang bakunahan ay babakunahan na natin. Wala po tayong problema sa pagbabakuna at ang mga tao ay receptive, di mo sila kailangang pilitin. [“Now, maybe we will go to those [in] schools, that can already be vaccinated and we will vaccinate them. We don’t have any problems with vaccinations and people are receptive, you don’t have to force them],” he added. Low COVID-19 cases The Sulu governor shared that as of now, there are 11 COVID-19 active cases in the province, he cited a total of 684 cases since the start of the pandemic, while 24 of them died due to complications from the deadly virus. “Ang cases natin ngayon ay 11 ang active cases natin dito. At 24 lamang ang namatay simula noong umpisa pa ng pandemya. Sa total cases naman, mayroong 684 na confirmed cases dito sa ating lalawigan. [We currently have 11 active cases here. And 24 have

died since the pandemic began. In total, there are 684 confirmed cases here in our province],” he pointed out. The vaccination program in the province is continuing with the help of the Ministry of Health and the Bangsamoro Inter-Agency Task Force (B-IATF) as there are remaining 66,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines. The provincial government of Sulu is also eyeing to buy a COVID-19 testing machine to fast-track swab test results while waiting for the machines that will be given by the National Task Force Against COVID-19. “Sabi ni Secretary Galvez na padadalhan tayo rito ng testing machine for COVID-19 para di na natin kailangang ipadala pa sa Zamboanga City para sa swab test. [Secretary Galvez said that a testing machine for COVID-19 will be sent here so that we do not have to send our swab tests to Zamboanga City to know the results],” he said. through education,” he said. He also mentioned that passing the Media Workers Welfare Bill into law will allow the industry to thrive as employment security will be assured. Secretary Martin Andanar highlighted the policies that the PCOO has pushed. These included the Freedom of Information, the Presidential Task Force on

Media Security, and the pending Media Workers Welfare Bill. He said that with these policies in place, the agency is taking part in keeping democracy alive in the country. “Kinahangalan mupasar ni siya (Media Workers Welfare Bill) kay aron matabangan tang mga workers sa media. [The Media Workers Welfare Bill should be passed into law so that we can also help the workers in the media. We need all the support that we can get from the government],” he said. “If we have this Media Workers Welfare Bill passed as a law, then the media industry will even thrive more. This is important because we are a democratic nation,” he added.

Ghaye Alegrio with the 2012 Oro Chamber Board of Trustees and US Ambassador Harry Thomas during her tenure as president.

Ma. Teresa “Ghaye” R. Alegrio

Peers extol former PCCI and Oro Chamber Exec By MIKE BAÑOS, Editor at large

Ma. Teresa R. Alegrio

COLLEAGUES in the business, academic and civil society have lauded a former chief executive of the largest business organization in Region X, and Mindanao head of the country’s largest business organization after she succumbed to a lingering illness late Friday afternoon, October 1, 2021. Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Area Vice President for Mindanao Ma. Teresa “Ghaye” Rillo Alegrio was one of the shining lights of the business chamber movement in Mindanao, and was also a former SecretaryGeneral and President of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber). “It’s so sad that Ghaye passed away 5:50 pm yesterday the same time we ended the Mindanao Chamber Management Forum, the last event of PCCI Mindanao. To the very end Ghaye was with us. She fought a good fight. She finished the race. Now, may she rest in peace! Let’s continue to pray for the eternal repose of her soul,” said Art Milan, acting PCCI Mindanao Area Vice President, who took over for Alegrio when she was unable to continue due to her condition. Ms. Alegrio actively served as part of the 20-member board of directors under former ambas-

sador and PCCI president Benedicto Yujuico. There are about 45 local Chambers of Commerce (LCCIs) in Mindanao affiliated with PCCI, of which some 90% belong to MSMEs whose capitalization range from P3M-100 million, with large companies comprising about 10% of the chamber members. The Oro Chamber and PCCI-X under her stewardship advocated for the soonest implementation of the proposal to Upgrade, Expand, Operate and Maintain the Laguindingan Airport of Aboitiz Infrastructure Inc. (AIC). PCCI and the companies representing the energy

sector, recommended to the Regional Development Council-X the need to review the provisions of Energy Regulation No. 1-94 to consider aligning its policy with EO 70 on making funds available for priority focus areas, besides the host communities stipulated in I-94. ER 1-94 program is a policy under the Department of Energy Act of 1992 and the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, which stipulates that host communities are entitled to a share of one centavo for every kilowatt-hour (Php 0.01 / kWh) sold by power generation plants operating in their area. The group agreed to make this undertaking a continuing engagement, to be institutionalized in the RDC-X through quarterly RDC-X private sector rep-

resentative meetings and with the appropriate Lines of Efforts /Task Groups. “Ms. Ghaye was fearless with a strong “can do” spirit, which was infectious,” remarked Mylah Faye B. Cariño, RDC-X Vice Chair and NEDA-X Regional Director. “She was generous in sharing her ideas, which were often pragmatic and workable. I will miss her dynamism and optimism for life. She believed that amidst these dark clouds, a bright future awaits everyone.” Ms. Alegrio holds the distinction of being the first Secretary-General of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) to become its President, and prior to her election as PCCI AVP for Mindanao, also served as the PCCI Regional Governor

Ghaye and Jun Alegrio with Archbishop Emeritus Antonio Ledesma and XU’s Trel Borja during the launching of Xavier Ecoville.

for Region X (Northern Mindanao from 2018-2019. “If she had something in mind that she believe is noteworthy, she will do all ways possible to make it happen,” said Ruben A. Vegafria, the 3-time and current Oro Chamber President. “On the campaign of PCCI to encourage local chambers members/big private companies to purchase own vaccines in collaboration with Go Negosyo of Joey Concepcion, the local chambers were somehow reluctant but she was relentless. She kept on calling and following up with the local chamber presidents despite their hesitance and was able to convince most of us to participate. Purpose-driven - that’s what she was,” he added. “Ghaye’s first engagement with the Oro Chamber in the 90s was the USAID funded Agri-Business System Assistance Program (ASAP) as the Project Manager and Mindanao Regional Governors of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry I was the Project Director,” with PCCI President Ambassador Benedicto Yujuico (4th from left) and Mindanao AVP recalls former Oro Chamber Ghaye Alegrio (4th from right). President Eduardo Pelaez. “ASAP supported the Northern Mindanao Federation of Dairy Cooperatives and the Dairy Confederation of the Philippines. Eventually, Ghaye handled the Oro Chamber’s Regional Chamber project with the Handwerkskammer Kassel of Germany . The chamber participants were the Iligan, Ozamiz, and Butuan Chambers.” Ms. Alegrio spent no less than 29 years in the Chamber movement serving in various capacities: from program manager of the Philippine-German Chamber Cooperation Program; as secretary-general when the Oro Chamber became PCCI’s 1st Hall of Fame Most Outstanding Chamber of the Philippines; as Vice President for Business Development, before being elected its 1st lady president in 2012. from page 8 Competitive City in the Philippines by the National Competitiveness Council. Besides her activism in the chamber movement, Ms. Alegrio also concurrently served as the Head of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Public Relations Department of STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. She actively sought to multiply SPI’s CSR initiatives with the National Economic and Development Authority-Region X and Department of the Interior and Local Government-Region by seeking ways to further strengthen collaboration and partnership in leveraging resources from the business sector through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. The initiative focused on how government, the business sector, and civil society organizations could best synergize and sustain efforts and resources to operationalize Executive Order No. 70 (Whole-of-Nation Approach) in attaining lasting peace and inclusive development in the region. NEDA-X generated information from the business sector on their CSR-funded activities in the region for CY 2020, which were then deployed in targeted communities under the convergence areas for peace and development (CAPDev) program. “Ghaye is a woman of deep faith and compassion for the least,” said Jerome R. Soldevilla, SPI Communications Officer and a long-time fellow worker. “She steered SPI’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda in helping those who are in need, helping create positive social impact and improved the quality of life of the beneficiaries of SPI’s various social development programs.” On top of her professional engagements with SPI and PCCI, Ms. Alegrio also served as the Vice Chair in the Board of Trustees of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier Ateneo). “In the first few days after Tropical Storm Sendong devastated Cagayan de Oro , Ghaye was the one who suggested to XU President Fr. Bobby Yap S.J. and the Board of Trustees, that Xavier donate at least two hectares of the university’s Lumbia property for the hundreds of families dislocated by the deadly flash flood,” recalls former Oro Chamber President and current Promote Normin Chairman Elpie Paras, who also served as Alegrio’s colleague in the XU Board of Trustees. “Today, over five hundred families live in the five hectare Xavier Ecoville relocation site, that has now become a prime example of a safe and sustainable community, spurring the development of Brgy. Lumbia into a prime location for several housing subdivisions . Such concern for others was Ghaye’s mantra and her legacy lives on.” Current Xavier Ateneo President Fr. Mars Tan, SJ concurs. “Ms. Ghaye Alegrio served on the Xavier University Board of Trustees for 11 years. In her last few years, she took on an active role as the Board Vice-Chair, and then as the acting Chair for a year. Last year, she started to complain about her back pain. However, at long virtual BOT meet-

ings she did not show it as she remained composed and focused. This year, Ghaye was supposed to end her 4th term as XU trustee, but BOT Chair Frank Guerra and I believed the Board needed her during the pandemic times.” “As a trustee, Ghaye liked to share important insights on how business and economy would affect schools and education in general. Her inputs were always comprehensive and updated, and I found them quite helpful to both the operational and the strategic plans of the University. Ghaye was always engaging and generous in sharing her knowledge and expertise to benefit the university. Similarly, outside meetings, she showed much personal concern for people as for example she tried hard to secure Covid-19 vaccines early on and to include the priests in the priority list.” “Lastly, I remember Ghaye as a kind friend who didn’t miss sending greetings and gifts during Christmas.” Ms. Alegrio is survived by her husband Mauricio D. Alegrio, Jr., and son Ralph.

Other projects and programs to be implemented in Sulu are the Php 200-M project of the national government for a new water system there and free-wifi access in the central hubs through the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). “Pasalamat tayo kay President Duterte dahil sa situation natin ngayon. As of September 2021, the airline has refunded a total of PHP 8.18 billion. Cebu Pacific issued PHP 479 million in refunds to customers in the July-September period. Previously, the airline earlier announced that it had refunded its passengers P7.7 billion for requests filed from January 2020 until June 2021. “As of August, the airline had verified cases totaling 2,842, and discussed with CAB the resolution of these complaints. from page 2 trailblazing project, the Children’s Games.. We ccontinued blieving and came back in 2018. This brings the Children’s games, right here in Mindanao State University to more than 500 children from all over Marawi. Today, I am beyond amazed to witness the fruits of what all of us have believed in- a city driven by its love for sports, peace and unity. The United Nations 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals has recognized sports as an important enabler of sustanable development. For 31 years, the PSC has been working to spread sport across the archipelago, with programs designed for all sectors of the Filipino community, rom grassroots to the elite. When I assumed office, our President Rodrigo Duterte made it clear to me that we have to bring sports to the periphery. Marawi is not in the periphery, however, it us ab urban society beset by the sad realities of strife That is why we continued supporting this city , by rehabilitating the MSU Track Oval to an Olympic-standard facility and helping accelerate sports development, we hope to shore up the spirits of the people and spark inspiration among the youth through sports. It is for this reason that I thank MSU President Macaayong and the whole Mindanao State University recognizing our efforts and contributions to the university and the Mindanao Sports for Peace Movement and to be awarded to me on this auspicious day of your 6o founding anniversary makes it more special. The good book said, work as though you are working for the Lord and not for man. Given the privilege of leading the sole government authority on amateur sports. I took its a a divine mission to uplift sports and uplift my community through sports. Jibin told reporters they are now conducting massive investigations on the recent bomb scares that happened in the province this month. “Additional police personnel was deployed and more roadblocks were set up around the town,” Jibin said in a statement Friday. Investigation disclosed that unidentified criminals sneaked near the mosque and fired an M79 grenade launcher toward the town government center at Barangay Poblacion around 8 pm. The explosive device landed at the dome of the mosque but fortunately, no lives were hurt in the incident. It was learned that the explosive device was lobbed at the compound, just beside the office of the Commission on Elections. “This is unfortunate because a holy place was partially damaged,” he added. “We could not say this early if it is election-related but we are not discounting that,” Muza told reporters on Friday. Koi’s Law Be Like! By Ms. MARIA DIOSA M. DAAYATA T-I/ Bagocboc Elem. School

Pond keepers or ponders are very much familiar with the Koi’s Law. It is a term that best describes how koi fish or specifically “nishigikoi”, a type of colored carp kept for ornamental purposes in ponds or water gardens could possibly grow. The Koi’s Law argues that suppose a koi fish is put on a bowl, it can only grow 5-8 cm. in length, when taken to a pond, it grows from 12-25 cm, but when the same fish is put on the river, it can grow to 90cm to 120 cm! (Source Mario Kuraki) Amazing, isn’t it? One koi fish could vary in growth depending on its environment. In the new normal landscape of Philippine educational system brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps we can ponder our

cognition on the ultimate changes it brings to our lives by adjusting our mindset in the likes of the koi. Like the environment of the koi, parents, teachers, learners, stakeholders, and other educational front liners can choose the standard of real sense on the acceptance of new normal delivery mode. It could be a size of a fishbowl, that of a pond, or with limitless possibilities just like the river. Our own way of dealing with the new normal educational system as it opens its second school year last September 13, 2021, is proportional to our environment and our way of thinking. An example would be the conduct of the Virtual Diagnostic Oral Reading Test for elementary, junior high school and senior high

school learners. As a reading coordinator assigned in one of the far-flung schools, I confined my thoughts on a fishbowl. It seemed impossible to realize a virtual reading test. The poor internet connection in hinterland schools is an impediment. In addition to that, not even 5% of learners have their own gadget. It is not only me, but other reading coordinators shared the same thoughts as mine. But then, one person, Ms. Joan Cabili, took the initiative, site possibilities, and planned everything out of notice by saying,” Let us try, Mam and Sir!” With such strong conviction coming from her, everyone’s mindset suddenly leaped into the river of possibilities from the fishbowl of confinement. From a limited point of view, teachers, parents, and learners from midland and

hinterland cluster schools accepted the challenge of virtual reading test with vigor, motivation, and a wider perspective that anything is possible and worth trying. The dedication and passion of teachers, parents and learners in midland and hinterland schools with the guidance and support from some essential personnel was rewarded as the first ever Virtual Diagnostic Oral Reading Test for SY 20212022 was well accomplished. Apart from that, it also paved the way for stronger school partnerships on future virtual activities ahead. An idea is never too small or too big, just like a koi, it depends on how we interpret and adapt ourselves to it. So long as we never underestimate the power of endless possibilities. Marines, PDEA nab 3, seize P6.8-M shabu in Tawi-Tawi By TEOFILO GARCIA, JR.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Joint military and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives have arrested three suspected big-time drug personalities and seized PHP6.8 million worth of illegal drugs in an anti-drug operation in Tawi-Tawi, military officials announced Monday. Maj. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., commander of Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), identified the arrested suspects as Rodimer Hamsiri Sappari, 21; Nurmilyn Suldi Majid, 26; and Hatta Muialib Sakiral, 28, all of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. Rosario said the suspects were arrested by joint operatives of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-12 (MBLT-12) and PDEA around 4:40 p.m. Saturday along Bagay Street in Barangay Poblacion, Bongao. Seized from the suspects were a kilogram of suspected shabu worth PHP6.8 million, marked money, three wallets, a bag, three identification cards, one brown paper bag, and two plastic pieces of cellophane. “The intensive planning and coordination led to the successful execution of the buy-bust operation,” Col. Romeo Racadio, Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi commander, said Monday. Racadio said the arrested suspects were placed under the custody of the PDEA-9 for proper disposition and filing of appropriate charges. Rosario said they will continue to conduct law enforcement support operations with other law enforcement agencies to prevent the proliferation of illegal drugs in the province of Tawi-Tawi. “Rest assured that the military units under the Western Mindanao Command will continue to attune its efforts particularly on the government’s campaign against prohibited drugs,” Rosario said. five years, some 63 IP leaders have been murdered by powerful entities that cannot moderate their greed in cohort with power-that-be. Go to Butong, Quezon and you will see more than 1,000 families from the ManoboPulangihon Tribe living under shattered tents along the highway, eating just “kamote” once a day or nothing at all. For five years now, they have been living in extreme poverty as their 1,111 hectare-Ancestral Domain has been land-grabbed by a powerful corporation whose President is the Mayor of Quezon, Bukidnon. It is a wonderful coincidence that all of the abovementioned celebration fall together in the same month as these events are inextricably linked and the issues they carry are very much related. This month is the apt time for all of us to pause and reflect on issues of poverty, gross inequities and social injustices not only nationally but also globally. As embodied in the 17 Sustainable Development Goas (SDGs), all the nations in the world have targeted the eradication of hunger, poverty, gross inequities, social injustice, climate change, violent extremism and the promotion of peace, health, gender equity, and sustainability carrying the theme, “Transformative Cooperatives for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace.” Transformation has become imperative in a world that has given so much veneration to the profit motive that has captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and even of religions groups. There is so much denigration of spirituality as humanity is now buried in so much consumerism and materialism. Indeed, cooperatives are not transactional but transformational. Based on studies, out of 4.4 billion people in development countries, 1.3 billion live on less than $1/day; 2.8 billlion on less than $2/ day, 821 million people are struggling to meet their basic food need requirements on daily basis. Each year, 15 million people die of poverty-related causes, most are children. That is worse than the pandemic. Why? Because of corporate globalization where only 1% of the population control the economy. Don’t you know that the eight (8) wealthiest corporations on earth have an asset greater than the combined assets of 3.5 billion people on earth or half of the world’s population. While there are millions who are hungry, yet a rich family in California, USA prepared a cake worth $42,000. In the Philippines, the Social Weather Station, in a survey disclosed that 17 million are subsisting on $1/day while 43 million of

42/day. It also disclsed that 15% of household heads reported that their families had experienced hunger, without having anything to eat, at least once in the last 3 months during this time of pandemic. What is horrible is at a time when there is so much poverty and hunger, Sen. Imee Marcos has disclosed recently that some 67 billion pesos has been corrupted in what is called by the Senate BlueRibbon Committee as a premeditated plunder that has caused so much alarm to the Filipino people! “There is a battle outside and it is raging. . . It will soon shade your windows and rattle your walls . . (the flawed societal order) is rapidly fading. For the times thay are a-changing.” So goes the song. Yes, it is a war against dehumanizing poverty, climate change, social injustice, gross inequities and corruption. It is a struggle for food security, ecological integrity, and social transformation not through the fire-power of guns but by the strength of the human spirit through cooperativism! Mabuhay and KOOPERATIBA!

Rodriguez residence. Mandea said that the face of the suspect could not be fully identified because only the eyes could be seen, but the police investigators were digging into it, especially the owner of the getaway motorcycle. On Saturday morning, a woman identified only as “Linda” called the Magnum radio station here telling Jun Albino, the anchorman, that the life of her husband was imperil. She narrated that her husband (she withheld the name) wanted to surrender because an identified group was hunting for his head. Linda told Magnum radio that, including her husband, they were five (suspects) threw the botched grenade and is now in hiding fearing for his life. She said that her husband was fetched by the other suspects in their residence in Pagadia n, Zamboanga del Norte on the night of Sept. 28 for a “job” in Cagayan de Oro City. Linda wanted to disclose the alleged mastermind, but Jun Albino cut her short telling her to disclose the names of the mastermind to the authorities investigating the case.

Tuesday, October 5, 2021 Mandea said that the police were willing to talk with Linda and fscilitate the surrender of her husband. Rodriguez has sought the assistance of all law enforcement agencies, including the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), to investigate the incident and identify the mastermind. “Although no one was hurt because the grenade turned out to be dud, the Rodriguez family was taken the incident seriously because “this was the first time that our lives were threatenehed after 18 years as an elected public servant,” Deputy Speaker Rodriguez said.

Zia, the Deputy Speaker of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, is the co-author of the Bangsamoro’s Education Code, Civil Service Code and the Administrative Code. He authors the Oxygen Buffer Stock Code of 2021. If he is elected, Zia will succeed his elder sibling, Ansaruddin Abdul Malik, who is in his last term. The Adiongs’ cousin, Lanao del Sur 2nd District Representative Yasser Alonto Balindong also filed his CoC for reelection. If he wins, Zia said he will push forward the completion of Marawi rehabilitation and the compensation bill. “It is now under committee deliberation in the senate. We are happy with the movement on how the Marawi compensation bill is being pushed. Even after the Marawi compensation bill will be enacted soon, hoping it will, then we also need to make sure that the Marawi rebuilding and rehabilitation will not only be limited to providing assistance to families whose houses have been damaged,” Adiong said. He said they also need to institutionalize interventions to make sure that those who have lost their homes and businesses will be included as part of the package to be provided with assistance. Adiong said he will also make sure that the National Power Corporation (NPC) will energize the province of Lanao del Sur and Marawi City. At present, the NPC is only giving the province 24 megawatts when their power need is more than 40 to be able to stimulate their own economy in the province, according to Adiong. “We need energy and that’s the irony because we supply

the energy and yet we are getting less than what we need. There has to be somebody there in congress to push forward to require NPC to provide us with enough megawatts to be able to be economically reliant,” Adiong said. The Adiongs’ local party, Sambatan ko Inged Ago Pagtao (SIAP), will coalesce with the LAKAS Christian-Muslim Democrat (LAKAS CMD) in the national level and will campaign for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte should she decide to run for president. Adiong said they will adhere to the decision of LAKAS CMD to support the presidential daughter because Duterte, being a Mindanaoan, has been associated with the national officials of the party. “LAKAS CMD having to praise the idea of uniting Muslims and Christians Democrats and Sara being a Mindanaoan herself, having to live with the community where Muslims and Christians, I believe that is part of why LAKAS endorses her as standard bearer as president,” Adiong said. The group, however, will support senatoriables whose platforms will include the completion of Marawi rehabilitation and rebuild. Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Allan Kadon said as of Friday morning there were 13 aspirants in Lanao del Sur who submitted their CoC to the provincial COMELEC, all were groupmates of Adiong. Also on the same day, Marawi Mayor Majul Gandamra also filed his CoC to the office of the city COMELEC for reelection. He filed CoC with his groupmates, reelectionist Vice Mayor Anouar Abdulrauf and eight city councilors seeking for reelection: Norjannah Magondacan, Abdulrahim Lao, Farhannah Langco, Zalwaida Macabangon, Nasif Marangit, Abdul Wali Dalidig, Abdani Alonto and Nasrollah Basman. Two are neophytes: Anisa Magandia-Dimal and Princess Pala Lanto-Gandamra. If Gandamra wins, he will be serving his last term. Gandamra’s group is running under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in coalition with the Adiong’s Lakas CMD.

According to the NGCP, its linemen, along with the military escorts, were conducting an inspection of the Agus 2-Kibawe 138-kiloVolt lines 1 and 2, which tripped out on September 22 and 23, respectively, when the incident occurred. The NGCP requested security assistance from the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion (55IB) as its staff members were allegedly threatened and intimidated by some locals who were demanding payment for the maintenance activities in the area. In an earlier statement, Lt. Col. Franco Raphael Alano, 55IB commanding officer, said five of the victims, including Calilung, Rico, and de Guzman, were immediately airlifted from the explosion site to APMC. Five other injured soldiers were also commended by their respective units. Three others, all military personnel, were transferred to the 1st Infantry Division’s Kuta Cesar Sang-an Station Hospital. All suffered shrapnel wounds. The remaining two of the wounded Army personnel, meanwhile, were already released from the hospital and have returned to duty. (PNA)

Lacson: ‘We need leaders, not pretenders’

S E NAT O R Pan f i l o “Pi ng” L a c s on re minded Filipinos that the Philippines needs a president that would have a different “brand of leadership” to respond to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the country’s prevailing problems. “Running for president of this country should not be aimed against any particular person,” Lacson said in a statement on the eve of the filing of COCs before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday, September 30. “R at her, it must purely depend on our honest desire to uplift the lives of our countrymen who have suffered more than enough

from incompetence and shameless corruption, mostly caused by the callous machinations of those in power whose conscience has given way to their greed,” he added. Lacson, who will run for president alongside Senate President Vicente Sotto III as vice presidential candidate, stressed that the country is still “at war” with the COVID-19, unemployment, and hunger. He also cited the countr y’s “humongous national debt and alarming budget deficit”, as well as the continuing incursions of China in the West Philippine Sea. “We cannot anymore afford a ‘more of the same’ brand of leader-

ship during this crucial time in our nation’s history. We should know by now that it doesn’t work,” Lacson said. “We need a leader, not a pretender. We

need a good leadership track record, not apprenticeship; we need tested honesty and integrity in public service, not lip service and double-speak,” he

further said. Lacson and Sotto would run with the campaign slogans “We Need A Leader”, and the “Kakayahan, Katapatan, at Katapatan (Compe-

tence, Integrity and Courage)” — qualities they said they possess. Lacson earlier said that he and Sotto will file their COCs on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Their certificates of candicacy were received by Election Officer III Rosalina T. Omar-Langi. In his message, Mayor Disomimba expressed how grateful he is for the overwhelming support he received from his supporters and the constituency of Tamparan. “I am truly honored and blessed to have been given this huge amount of sup-

port from the people of Tamparan. Thank you as you join me for a much better governance hopefully on our second term of office,” Disomimba said. The local chief executive also called for everybody’s participation to have a clean and honest national and local elections come 2022. “Let us be united despite our political differences as we pray for a peaceful conduct

of elections,” he said. The Disomimba-Lucman tandem filed their COCs along with their candidates for the Sangguniang Bayan: Khadafy D. Dimasar; Abubacar B. Camid; Suhailly M. Mascara; Rohani D. Liawao; Naga M. Saro; Johainah M. Mascara; Rinandang S. Manding: and Abdulrashid Disomimba. (Analisa P. Española)
