CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: The Corona virus have invaded the ranks of the insurgents in Northern Mindanao after some captured and surrendered communists rebels were found COVID -19 positive, the military said Tuesday. Maj. Francisco Garello, Jr., head of the army’s Division of Public Affairs Office in Camp Evangelista here,

said that eight of the 10 captured early September were found positive of COVID-19 virus. The 10 combatants of the New People’s Army (NPA) were captured during a clashed with state forces in Bukidnon where four NPA rebels killed. Another milestone achieved for thriving ‘Mindanaoan’ green developer WHAT had started as an operation with a naked desk in the offices of Pueblo de Oro Development Corporation in Uptown Cagayan de Oro has now finally reached its milestone of inaugurating its own offices in the newly built Primavera City tower in Phase 1, just beside SM City in Pueblo de Oro Business Park, Uptown CDO. When I was first invited to visit Cagayan de Oro in 2011 I was welcomed in a small container office just next to the long completed Primavera Residences. There was just a desk, a cabinet, and a decorative plant next to a model unit manned by Ms. Gladys Echano, the most loyal and long-lasting of all employees and currently the Sales and Marketing Director of the company. Nobody would have imagined Italpinas to grow so fast and list at the PSE after only 6 years into their existence. Architect Romolo Nati was convinced

about Uptown CdO from the very beginning and had a vision that has been materializing step by step, project after project. The new offices feature a modern and spacious design. The most successful and regarded developer of Cagayan de Oro, many would say, because when there was still no condominium building in town, IDC launched their first project, amidst a mixture of enthusiasm and unmissable critics. As a fierce sustainability and green building advocate, Architect Nati brought his experience of Italian green architecture and design and applied it here in the Philippines. The office blessing was somehow adapted to the current circumstances where larger gatherings are still not allowed but it was nevertheless a festive occasion with an enthusiastic atmosphere. Employees, key stakeholders, and some loyal investors gathered accompanied by the priest, who conveniently

spoke Italian due to the 3 years he spent in Italy. The majestic building, which is apparently soon for turnover to the many buyers, had a greatly decorated and elegant lobby, including the unmissable Christmas tree, a Filipino classic for September. Compared to Primavera Residences, the developer’s a finished project that lays just around the corner, this structure and its interior details seem a level above, lush and luxurious. Now I understand what Architect Nati means when he asserts at times that “we learned from

the experience of our first project and always try to do better”. So, talking about the offices on the second floor, they seem to be a sort of call center with its many decks and large spaces. It reveals maybe the developer’s plan and intention to expand their operations and probably add more projects. Just a guess, but probably not too far-fetched. Aside from the large space for the regular employees, I could see also various enclosed office spaces, most likely for the management. Maybe 6 or 7 with furnished

office interiors, a pantry, a conference or board room, and 2 smaller meeting rooms. All in all a top-ofthe-notch office that could impress many in Northern Mindanao as well as in Makati. This is also evidence that the provinces are growing and more companies are settling out of Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. Now it’s time for Metro Cagayan de Oro to thrive and conquer the headlines. Italpinas has certainly chosen their location very well as Uptown Cdo is widely considered the BGC of

Cagayan de Oro where in fact the price of the land has more than quintupled over the past 10 years. The sales office for Primavera City Phase 2 is located on the ground floor of the building, clearly visible from P. N. Roa Boulevard, amidst other retail spaces that will soon be populated by shops and restaurants. A great location to attract more curious buyers to avail of the opportunity to enjoy the true condo lifestyle in this green, Edge certified building with an incredible infinity pool and a view from the top.

WHEN he was campaigning for US Presidency, a popular line stated then by candidate Bill Clinton won him the presidency when he said, “it’s the economy, stupid!” While other candidates zeroed-in on so many issues, candidate Clinton became the winning candidate because he brought to the fore essential issues on the economy. As our country is facing so much disarray due to Covid-19, but such is only “a tip of the iceberg.” That pandemic which began in China can be traced to the killings of bats or “paniki” to satisfy man’s appetite where the bats’ virus was transferred to the homo sapiens. That was also true to the HIV disease when human beings (Africans) began eating “chimpanzees” or monkeys, thus the monkeys’ virus infected the

homo sapiens. Thus, in the same breath that we now say, “it is not Covid-19 but the environment, Stupid!” Please reflect that whatever be the form, all life is sacred as creation is a manifestation of the Creator, each one carrying a sense of divinity. Thus, every time you eat meat – be red or white – please reflect for a while that that meat came from a life form that once did breathe, having experienced in its own right pleasures and pains, exposed to the wonders of life, having felt the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the wind, the brightness of the moon and the stars at night, and finally, had to succumb to the pains of shedding blood as its throat had to be cut – all because you must eat and live. Seen in the context of the oneness and divinity of

Orlan R. Ravanera

life, it is the contention that the most flawed species of all of God’s creation is the homo sapiens. Don’t you know that in 19th century alone, the homo sapiens had killed its own kind at the tune of more than one hundred fifty-million out of two world wars, the cleansing of Pol Pot and Hitler and the ongoing war in the Middle East and Mindanao. But the killings were not just limited to its own kind; the homo sapiens had erased from the face of the earth billions of life forms – flora and fauna – that had been created billions of years even prior to creation of the homo sapiens. Rest In Peace!

YEARS ago, I was still a freshman, when it came to the Internet and blogging. When I started my first blog as a German expatriate living in the Philippines, a very special social network came across my path: Facebook! I started chatting with some media friends from all over the Philippines. Actually I started with “Friendster”. Friends from the whole globe! Facebook was introduced to me as a new site for college kids. Nowadays, we’re experiencing different headlines, when it comes to social media networks. Despite scandals over fake news and data privacy, one thing is for sure: the social network Facebook is unlikely to disappear any time soon. Actually, during the first year, I found Facebook’s

evolution and societal function both equally fascinating and disturbing. The biggest question of all that gnaws at the back of my mind is whether there is any stopping Facebook in the future? It looks increasingly like the answer is no. “Friendster failed for simple reasons: the time wasn’t right,” says Bernie Hogan, senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute. “Not only is it about the readiness of people to participate in a social networking site, but it’s also just about the nuts and bolts.” Friendster and MySpace helped blaze the trail for Facebook’s global popularity, but they failed to achieve even close to the same success as their successor. The kind of engineering

Klaus Doring

that allows Facebook to function every day simply wasn’t available back in the early days of the new millennium. But by 2004, internet speeds had increased and the coding that underpins websites had become more sophisticated. The technical limitations of earlier social networking sites like Friendster and Friends Reunited cleared the runway for Facebook. But despite technical barriers, those other sites paved the way for Facebook at a time when people were still a little wary of putting See REST, page 7

Pinoy youth shouldn’t settle for ‘lesser evil’ in 2022 ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina—A few weeks from now, regardless of the pandemic and all the quarantine restrictions imposed by the national government, the filing of candidacies will commence to kick off that political circus we have now come to know as the Philippine elections. From Oct. 1 to 8, candidates from across the country will file their candidacies and this includes Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental province. While the Padayon Pilipino unveiled their lineup for the province they have yet to declare their official bet for Cagayan de Oro City. But chances are, it will be Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of

the city’s second district after incumbent Misamis Oriental governor Yevgeny Emano decided to run for the province’s second congressional district. As far as the Team OKKA is concerned, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno made no secret of his bid for the gubernatorial post with his chosen vice gubernatorial candidate Ariel ‘Ayi’ Hernandez. He’s invited City Information Officer Maricel Casiño-Rivera to run for the Provincial Board (PB) representing the second district but the deal will be sealed once the filing of candidacies kick off. Moreno also lobbied anew for Rep. Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy of the city’s 1st district to

Susan Palmes-Dennis

run for mayor and Councilor Edna ‘Inday’ Dahino as vice mayor. But enough of them for now. Regardless of whom one is rooting for, the elections all boil down to winning the electorate’s support through the ballot. And a substantial chunk of that support will be sourced from the country’s youth who now more than ever are being bombarded with election propaganda the likes of which have never been seen since the electoral process was first instituted

PCOO EYES TO ATTAIN POPULATION PROTECTION THIS YEAR; 85% OF EMPLOYEES NOW FULLY VACCINATED VS COVID-19 MANILA – The Presidential Communications Operations Office is looking at achieving population protection by year-end, after marking a major breakthrough with the vaccination of 85% of total PCOO personnel and its attached agencies nationwide. PCOO Sec. Martin A. Andanar emphasized that the “PCOO has made it a departmental goal to inoculate and vaccinate all of its government personnel and their families.” In June 2021, the PCOO management started the vaccination drive of the general population of the agency together with their dependents with the valuable assistance of the National Vaccine Operations Center and the local government units of the City of Manila and Quezon City, and as well as local government units for the regional offices of PCOO units and agencies nationwide. “This is to ensure the unhampered delivery of information, communications, and government services

to the Filipino public,” Sec. Andanar added. He also thanked PCOO Legal Affairs ASec. Omar Romero, PCOO Group vaccination coordinator, Admin, and Finance USec. Kris Ablan and the heads of the PCOO attached agencies for making the PCOO Group’s vaccination drive possible and successful. According to Asec. Romero, “around 3,364 agency personnel and its attached agencies nationwide have been fully vaccinated as of September 27, 2021.” The figure translates to 84.93% of its 3,961 total workforces. Data showed that there are still 343 personnel that have yet to receive their second dose, while 69 persons voluntarily opted not to be inoculated. ASec. Romero emphasized that the vaccination is “to ensure the safety and health of all PCOO employees pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Standards for the Public Sector per Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1, s. 2020 issued by the

FAIR DISTRIBUTION OF PROJECTS ACROSS ALL REGIONS PUSHED AND REALIZED UNDER DUTERTE ADMIN MANILA - Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar on Tuesday stressed how the Duterte administration has poured efforts into providing an equitable distribution of projects to other regions across the Philippines. He noted that through the Build, Build, Build projects, the government was able to aid in shaping the potential of the countryside aside from focusing on further improving areas that are already highly urbanized. “Nabungkag gyud kay makita man nato sa Build, Build, Build program, kung aha dunay mga projects sa uban Visayas, Mindanao, ug Luzon nga gawas sa Metro Manila [We really disintegrated it [projects and programs centered in Metro Manila]. We can see it through the Build, Build, Build program where we have various projects for Visayas, Mindanao, and other parts of Luzon outside of Metro Manila],” he said in an interview on Brigada News FM Gensan. He cited other big-ticket projects undertaken and completed in the past five

years including the CebuCordova Link Expressway in Cebu Province, and road connectivity projects in Region 12. “The government continues to inject or pump prime the economy by giving focus to Build, Build, Build, especially in the last 8 months of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” he said. He also mentioned the series of infrastructure initiatives of the PCOO which included the completed Mindanao Media Hub, and the ongoing construction of buildings for some of the regional offices of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). Just this Monday, September 27, the PCOO joined the Department of Public Works and Highways Region 10 (DPWH-10), the local government unit of Manolo Fortich, and the Northern Bukidnon State College for the groundbreaking ceremony of the P79 million Government Communications Academy. “These are some of the evidence that would prove that we decentralized government communications,” See PROJECTS, page 8

Civil Service Commission on March 4, 2020.” High Vaccination Rate In PCOO proper, 433 employees (93.12%) are now fully vaccinated while 15 personnel are waiting to resume the inoculation this coming month. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Communications Services is the first PCOO unit to reach population protection this quarter as all of its 119 personnel are now fully vaccinated against the virus. The Presidential Broad-

cast Staff - Radio Television Malacañang surpassed a high vaccination rate of 98.08% (154 out of 156 personnel). The remaining two are now waiting to receive their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Central offices of the two government media corporations, People’s Television Network, Inc. and Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation, also recorded above the 90-percent mark of their fully vaccinated personnel, reaching 92.13% and 94.81%, respectively.

Other PCOO attached agencies like the Philippine Information Agency, News and Information Bureau, APO Production Unit, Inc., and the National Printing Office also recorded a high vaccination rate of 88% to 90%. Aside from PCOO personnel and dependents, some members of the Malacañang Press Corps were included in the vaccination drive. “We have also included in our vaccination campaign the journalists and news and media professionals in the

Malacañang Press Corps,” Andanar said. “This drive to inoculate and vaccinate our government personnel, their families, and the members of the MPC is part of our whole-of-nation approach in the Duterte administration, knowing how important it is for COVID-19 vaccines to be made accessible for us to succeed in our road to recovery as one nation and to contribute to the global effort in fighting the pandemic,” the PCOO chief emphasized.

and the annihilation of billions of life forms is called as Anthropocene, with the Greek roots meaning “human-made” (anthropo) and “new” (cene). The Anthropocene is our current, unprecedented epoch of the Earth in which the Earth’s physical change – climate, biodiversity, chemistry – is mainly driven by human activity. Mother Earth (GAIA) has been sacrificed to the altar of greed and profit by the contemporaneous development paradigm called corporate globalization. In fact, humanity is now “two minutes before midnight” as we are now facing the 6th extinction but nothing is being done to counter climate change which is a crime against God, against humanity and against the Earth. Why? The 19 Fossil Companies mostly Americans cannot moderate their greed. Out of the use of fossil fuels and coals, these companies are earning 19 trillion dollars annually or 10 million dollars every minute. A part of these massive raking goes to the mainstream media to continue their gospel of lies and disinformation, burying humanity deeply into consumerism and materialism. Wala pong nagigising! If you are the Creator, how will you awaken mankind? No other way but through this on-going pandemic! My contention is that unless man is awakened, the virus will continue. All the dear animals, plants, fish and what have you, have lived and giving their lives so that human beings may live to fulfill God’s mandate as God’s stewards, such truism has made life so meaningful, dramatic and worth living – All for God’s glory. Oh my God, that wasn’t the case. All of them have been sacrificed to the altar of greed and profit for self-aggrandizement of a few powerful oligarchs to dominate the world making human beings just brutes and beasts in a world that has been characterized with so much unbridled materialism and consumerism. Life has ceased to be sacred but diabolical! Let the awakening process now begins. To quote Rabindranath Tagore: “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; where knowledge is free; where the world is not broken down by narrow domestic walls. In that Heaven of Freedom my Father, Let my people awake!” The awakening process has now begun because of the pandemic. The truth is, the time of the homo sapiens is now over. The homo sapiens created in the image and likeness of God must now realize that he/she is not just form but connected to the Formless Being, the Unmanifested, the Eternal Being and must realize that he/she is more than form but CONCIOUSNESS, the awareness presence and must realize the

oneness and sacredness of life. By doing so, he/she becomes SPIRITUS LUMINUS (enlightened spirit) or HOMO PACEM (men and women for peace). Yes, we are not just ripples of the ocean but the ocean itself. When you know and feel that, you have awakened. A pure consciousness has loomed.

much of themselves out on the internet. In the 1990s, internet users were warned against even sharing their first name online, but now words like “oversharing” and “selfie” are so common they are recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary. Facebook - bone or ban? Fact is, Facebook is becoming that de facto, online identity provider. I am on Twitter and LinkedIn. But bear with me, most of the time, I spend being online on Facebook. Once the mid-2000s rolled around, Facebook was also able to hire a lot of talented engineers from Silicon Valley, which helped it put together the kind of website infrastructure that could scale-up with an exponentially growing user base. Your Newsfeed doesn’t curate and customise itself – its launch needed engineers to cook up algorithms that picked the most valuable updates from your friends’ updates. But Hwang points to another serendipitous factor in Facebook’s global rise: mobile phones. In a lot of developing countries, people only have cheap mobiles to access the internet. In fact, a lot of these users think Facebook is the internet. “We can’t discount the power of mobile,” says Hwang. It’s made “social networks much, much more pervasive. You have social media at all times in your pocket, which makes it this powerful platform for news and conversation that operated in a slower way in the desktop-only era.” For starters, it has become so ingrained and intertwined in the digital ecosystem of the 21st Century that it is hard to now untangle it. Oxford’s Hogan points to a concept he calls “interoperability.” This is where a Facebook login is often required to use and operate other online services. “Just today I went out to buy concert tickets,” Hogan says. “I had to log into Facebook. I don’t use Facebook, but I had to dust off my login. Facebook is becoming that de facto, online identity provider.” I am sure you experienced the same, my dear readers. Facebook also taps into basic human needs, according to psychologists. Even with social media movements like #DeleteFacebook, mass privacy concerns or even just calls to leave the site on the back of pedestrian design tweaks, people just can’t stay away. “Almost everybody comes back,” says Catalina Toma, associate professor of communication

Face to face classes By IRENE P. GARCIA, Teacher III East City Central School Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City

THE Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday signed a joint memorandum circular outlining the guidelines for the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes for basic education in areas identified as “low risk” for the coronavirus. Our utmost priority is the health and safety of our learners and teachers while ensuring that learning happens and learning gaps are addressed. We have been proactive in planning for safe return to schools. The DepEd also consulted with various stakeholders -- child health experts, local government units (LGUs) and learners’ families. The pilot implementation, a combination of physical classes and distance learning,

is applicable for the schools that passed the two departments’ strict vetting process and have the support of their respective LGUs. Pilot implementation would be done among a maximum of 120 schools across the country, prioritizing Key Stage 1 learners (Kinder to Grade 3), after passing the School Readiness Assessment by DepEd and their local governments. Face-to-face classes, even in limited form, can mitigate the challenges of distance learning. It can address the needs of learners with no adult in the family qualified to perform the role of learning facilitator and ease the negative mental health and child development impact of the lack of face-to-face interaction and socialization among learners.

Thursday, September 30, 2021 science at the University of Wisconsin. “Social networking sites tap into what makes us human: we like to connect with others.” Yes, we don’t go out and meet friends somewhere for a chat or a beer or coffee. We are connected with them via Facebook. Especially since the pandemic didn’t allow us to go out and meet people personally. But there are tangible benefits beyond those that keep people hooked. “Lots of studies show the more people use Facebook, the more social capital they derive – resources that we get from just being connected to other people,” says Toma. “There’s emotional support, asking for advice, asking for recommendations.” For many Facebook users, the pros outweigh the cons: tracking down long-lost friends, getting leads to a job, expanding their business. They can deal with the glamorized glimpses. All this keeps people coming back for more, despite the onslaught of what Toma calls “glamorized glimpses”. These are the carefully curated peeks into the lives of everyone else, who all seem to be doing better than you. “They feel worse, but they cannot stop,” Toma says. I strongly have to agree! Facebook is bound to have a grip on our lives. “Social media companies seek to exploit one’s attention for profit,” Hogan says. “It’s not even ambiguous. It’s exactly what Zuckerberg said in Congress: ‘Where do you get your money?’ ‘We get it from ads.’” Right place, right time: the rise of internet-connected mobile devices in turn fueled the rise of Facebook. “Facebook’s business is still going to accelerate,” says Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University who wrote The Big Four, a book about how powerful a tiny handful of technology companies are becoming. “Consumers talk a big game but where is the first place they go to express their rage? Facebook and Instagram. And with 2.2 billion monthly active users, advertisers have no choice but to be on Facebook.” That could change, though, as advertising dollars follow young users who abandon the platform. Still, there’s plenty of stability with older people – even among senior citizens. The site’s true future could boil down to what world governments decide to do, if anything, about Facebook’s growing influence. “I don’t think the question is [what is] ‘killing Facebook’,” says Sherry Turkle, professor of the social studies of science and

technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I think the question is what would get people to an appropriate use of Facebook. To the extent that we ‘knew’ about it before, we found ways to put it out of mind. Now, we can no longer do this.” We’re now all too familiar with the dangers of data leaks and fake news. Let’s face it: there’s also the simple fact that Facebook has a monopoly. “Facebook’s sheer size and cash on hand means that they can either acquire or effectively shut down any competition,” says Galloway, pointing to examples like WhatsApp and Instagram, which were eventually absorbed into the Facebook behemoth. For now, Facebook is still so entrenched in our daily lives, there’s not going to be an immediate escape.“What’s more likely to happen is that people start to realize the markets and economy might be better off – by stimulating innovation, creating new jobs – if we were to break it up and have multiple firms instead of just one,” Galloway says. That’s the more likely outcome than Facebook just crashing, burning and disappearing altogether, according to the experts. Rest in peace, Facebook? Surely a big NO! +++ Email: doringklaus@gmail.com or follow me on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn or visit www.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot.com or www.klausdoringsclassicalmusic. blogspot.com.

in the country. The 2022 elections will be known as the pandemic election and whether or not there will be physical campaigning depends on when the Philippines will achieve the so-called herd immunity. The latest I’ve heard is that President Rodrigo Duterte gave the gosignal to expand the vaccination program to the general population. This means that regardless of category, walk-in vaccinations may be allowed but as to when it will kick off—the official announcement is October—has yet to be implemented. ************** Still, this is good news for every Filipino who had been burdened with the quarantine restrictions for nearly two years. This COVID-19 pandemic hit everyone really hard across the globe including the youth, who have been shuttered in their homes attending online classes and submitting modules in lieu of the actual classroom experience. And the Philippines

Brigada Eskwela 2021 By JAMAICA SCARLET T. NABONG TEACHER -III PATROCINIO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

EDUCATORS believe that environment plays a big part in students learning and so if school are not conducive to learning because of poor condition and some defective school facilities, education is hindered. The Department of Education conducted this years Brigada Eskwela also known as to National Schools Maintenance Week. As a way of meeting the pupils positive learning environment in the school, the Patrocinio Elementary School spearheaded by Mr. Noel D. Abao the school head and 16 teachers started the Brigada Eskwela 2021 with a recorida with in the different purok and zone of Baranggay Patrocinio Claveria Misamis Oriental. With the new normal situation, the school strictly followed health and safety protocols to assure safety among teacher, parents and other stakeholders in the implementing the Brigade Eskwela. It is putting a premium on cooperation and volunteerism, without expecting rewards. It is a way

of helping the school provide quality education through a healthy and safe environment for the good of the learners. The school also coordinates with the alumni and other people to raise fund so that school beautification and restoration can be achieve. Indeed, generous people shared their blessing to the school and with that the school was able to implement various restoration namely: 1. School Gate Pathway, 2. School Gate Signage, 3. Repainting of flower box, 4. Repainting of School Perimeter Fence, 5. Restoration of Gulayan sa Paaralan, and 6. Putting up of School Flower Nursery. This partnership with the private and government sector made a big difference in our school. The shared vision and mission that we had was attained through the support of partnership. With this, the Patrocinio Elementary School greatly recognized the initiative that are beneficial to every learners.

being a Third World country, its WiFi connection had dislocated even more students than before as they can hardly afford laptops, let alone mobile devices. So they turn to social media which had been deluged with troll farms and propaganda operators only too willing to mislead the youth to their patrons in exchange for a few thousand pesos. The quarantine also affected their mental health as the months of isolation caused depression and tragically for some, suicidal tendencies. I asked my 14-year-old grandson Christian ‘Sam’ Mejorada, a student of St. Mary’s Academy In Tagoloan town, what he thought about the 2022 elections and this is what he messaged me: ‘It’s a do or die game. We could not afford to have another lesser evil choice this 2022.’ He also messaged me that he is aware that many are registering but it’s no assurance that they would vote wisely. For someone who still has to wait three more years to vote, Christian showed a level-headed maturity that any parent or grandparent would be proud of. Previous generations showed interest or participated in the electoral process in varying capacities but today’s generation has the advantage of technology that ironically kept them both connected and disconnected at the same time. That is, they’re connected largely with their families and friends and to a vast, bottomless sea of online information at their fingertips. But depending on who you’re talking to, the Filipino youth is also disconnected to the world at large no thanks to the pandemic and their growing dependence on social media to make connections in their efforts to expand their social circle and cure their feelings of loneliness. And as it is, there are more than enough predators willing to exploit them for their benefit including the political operators. With these thoughts in mind, I messaged Christian and we had a good exchange on what he thinks should be done by the next set of elected public officials. He told me that, aside from substantial upgrades in the country’s health care system, the voters shouldn’t settle for the ‘lesser evil’ choice in 2022. For a 14-year-old I was amazed at Christian’s sharp observations, however simplistic it may be to the learned and supposedly mature adults now occupying top

tier posts in government and the private sector. His words inspires people like me into being eternal optimists and I hope the country’s youth reflect this mindset as well. It’s up to them to turn things around in our beloved Philippines.

A report tipped off by concerned villagers about the NPA’s extortion activities in the community prompted the 36IB soldiers to immediately responded to the said reports and conducted combat operation in the said area. A 10-minute gun battle ensued between the soldiers and more or less 10-armed group believed to be members of the Platoon 2, Guerilla Front 30 (GF30) under Noel Tumarlas Alacre @Megan. Afterward, the enemy scampered and withdrew to different directions leaving their comrades behind. The gun battle resulted in the recovery of two cadavers of unidentified NPA fighters and seized one M16A1 rifle, one (1) AR18 rifle, one carbine, one bandolier loaded with two long magazines and one short magazine of M16, four backpacks, two Nokia Cell phones, medical paraphernalia, personal belongings, and other subversive documents. “With the support of the locals and communities, we could easily track down the enemy. It is a manifestation that the growing support of the communities is a response that they don’t want the CPP-NPA in their area,” Reuyan said. He further added that the 36IB unit grieves with the slain NPAs as they are also victims of futile arm struggle and failed ideology. “I call on the remaining CPPNPA terrorist to surrender now and return to the folds of the law. Lay down your arms and return to your families. Avail the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), the government intervention package for former rebels” he added.

Green Energy Shift Finally, Zobel echoed the global call for a shift to green energy development, which the Ayala Group is addressing through AC Energy. With Japan being recognized for designing and building infrastructure resilient to natural disasters, Zobel said the Philippines can borrow technologies and practices from Japan to build a more resilient and adaptive grid. Zobel also touched on Japan’s pioneering efforts in the liquefied hydrogen space, which has tremendous implications for accelerating green energy transitions in the automotive space, and for the scalability of clean energy generation and storage vis-à-vis fuel cell technology. “Japan is certainly well on its way with its Green Growth Strategy by investing in these technologies, with hopes to achieve 40% of its national mix generated by renewable sources by 2030. There is much we can continue to learn from Japanese leadership in this field— disaster-resilient energy infrastructure and cutting-edge carbon-free fuels being just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. AC Energy aims to be the largest listed renewable platform in Southeast Asia, with a goal of producing 5GW of attributable renewable capacity by 2025. According to Zobel, Ayala’s longstanding partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation—which

Snack Exchange’s chocolate selection, and discover the different delightful and innovative ways each country celebrates chocolates. • Switzerland is known for its cheese, mountains and its smooth and creamy milk chocolate. In 1887, after many attempts. Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter created the original formula of what was to become the first successful milk chocolate. Before this, chocolate was not considered a delicacy, but was more of a nourishing a medicinal food. Two ingredients, milk and cocoa butter, which makes the chocolate melt at body temperature, are a big part of the reason why Swiss chocolate is so famous. One can find premium Swiss chocolate brands at Snack Exchange - Lindt, which started in 1845 and

has 370 shops around the globe; and Toblerone, the unique triangular shaped chocolate bar inspired by the Matterhorn, with its heavenly taste of Swiss milk, filled with natural honey, finest cocoa and almond nougat. • Belgium has been called the “Chocolate Capital of the World ‘’, and you can’t go to Belgium and not go to a chocolate shop. There are more than 2,000 around the country. Belgian chocolates are known to have a higher cocoa content, and filled Belgian chocolates such as truffles and molded pralines are very often in a fanciful shape and filled with butter creams and ganache. • Italy is passionate about its cuisine as it is for its art and culture. What makes Italian chocolate so good is that Italians care so much

about the purity of ingredients, and have amazingly combined the sophistication of dark chocolate and all the decadence of milk chocolate. Discover this with the Ferrero and Nutella lines at Snack Exchange founded in 1942 by Pietro Ferrero, a Turinese milkman. He created the famous Ferrero Rocher, crunchy chocolate with hazelnuts on the outside of a wafer and a chocolate and hazelnut filling, wrapped in a gold paper. • Britain has been a nation of chocoholics since the 19th century, considered the golden-age for cocoa-based creativity in the UK. It was during this time that Fry & Sons produced the first solid chocolate bar in 1847, and Cream Sticks, the first filled chocolate sweet in See CELEBRATE, page 11

infrastructure projects in the city. She said that Rep. Rodriguez stays in the ancestral house in Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro City whenever he is in Cagayan de Oro City. The City Councilor said that they have no idea on who lobbed the grenade and the possible motive, but were relieved when the ordinance did not explode. “The grenade threat was the first we engaged in politics. However, we are not discounting the possibility that the incident was politically motivated,” Rodriguez said. Police investigators are examining the closed circuit television cameras (cctv) that recorded two riding in tandem suspects on a motorcycle. Police were hoping that the cctv footage could lead to the identity of the ownership of the motorcycle and the iddntities of the riding suspects. Maj. Ivan Viñas, of the Cagayan de Oro City Police, said that the grenade, an Mk-2 type, was a very powerful explosive. An alert security guard reported the incident to the police after he noticed that the object thrown toward the Rodriguez residence turned out to be a hand grenade.

He said the onions was burned at a facility in Barangay Mantibugao, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon on Sept. 18. Valiente said the onions were condemned due to health reasons as the shipment has no sanitary permit. Upon issuance of an alert order by lawyer Elvira Cruz, BOC-10 district collector, the shipment was then subjected to a physical examination resulting to the discovery of onions, a violation

under Section 1400 of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) for misdeclaration. Misdeclaration of goods defrauds the government of its rightful revenues, Cruz said. A case for violation of the CMTA will be filed against the consignee of the smuggled goods, the collector said. In a separate interview, Elizabeth delas Llagas, BOC-10 deputy district collector for operations, said they are always on alert for smuggled good that enter the local ports.

Opol mayoral hopeful to support Uy By MARK FRANCISCO

THE chairman of the most densely populated barangay in Opol, Misamis Oriental will support the expected gubernatorial candidacy of outgoing Rep. Juliette Uy even though he cannot enter in the congressswoman’s municipal lineup of candidates. Barra barangay chairman Clementino Otacan Jr. - who is expected to run as mayor in the elections next year - is a supporter of Uy but the latter’s Team Unity is already expected to field Councilor Jann Actub as its mayoral bet. Despite this, Otacan said he will campaign for Uy’s impending gubernatorial candidacy as he believes the outgoing congresswoman is the best option to lead the province in the next three years among the other would-be candidates. “Grabe ka service-oriented si Cong, diri lang sa among barangay sa Barra kung unsay akong ihangyo nga mga projects iya dayon kini i-approve diretso,” Otacan said. Otacan claimed that he was initially approached by Team Unity to lead the municipal ticket in the 2022 elections in lieu of DEED OF EXTRAJUDICIAL SETTLEMENT WITH WAIVER OF RIGHTS Notice is hereby given that the intestate estate of the Late BENJAMIN O. accommodating outgoing Mayor Maximino Seno as his running mate. Seno has already utilized all his three terms as mayor and is automatically barred per law to seek another consecutive one. But Otacan has been at political odds with Seno

these past few years and declined the congresswoman’s invitation, leaving Team Unity to expectedly field Actub instead. “But despite ana, ako s iy a s up or t a h an i s ip gobernador,” Otacan said. This makes the Opol mayorship a three-way fight in May with two of the candidates to support Uy while PaDayon Pilipino bet Councilor Jay Bago to support gubernatorial hopeful Gingoog City Vice Mayor Peter Unabia. Members of the nineperson municipal council are also divided politically with incumbent Vice Mayor Louie Mark Neri expected as Otacan’s running mate. Councilor Clessa Monique Otacan-Garces will seek to reelect under her

father while Councilor Danilo Daroy Sr. is expected to run under Bago together with his son, vice mayoral hopeful Danilo Daroy Jr. - the incumbent barangay chairman of Poblacion. The rest of the councilors are expected to remain intact under the ActubSeno team. The filing of candidacies will be this October 1 to 8. Local candidates have not yet signified which presidential hopefuls to support in the coming elections. Team Unity will support whomever its umbrella National Unity Party endorses while PaDayon Pilipino will campaign for the presidential bet allied with the Nacionalista Party. Otacan remains an independent.
