A BRIMFUL OF ASHA
CALEB MARSHALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Sudbury Theatre Centre’s special presentation of Why Not Theatre’s A Brimful of Asha. We are thrilled to invite this massive Canadian hit into our home and Asha and Ravi Jain are sure to delight you as they welcome you into their home. Now that my feet are firmly planted here in Sudbury, my efforts have been intensely focused on planning our upcoming 2015.2016 Season. While I can’t share many details at this time, it is a season filled with desire, delight, and deception, and I’m sure it will excite you when we unveil it in April. Some weeks ago, we were treated to Last Stop., an evening of new play readings from the 2014.2015 Playwrights’ Junction. It was a tremendous night of strong emerging local voices and yet another indication to me of the wealth of talent in our city. Coming up at the beginning of March is Wichita Lineman, a special musical tribute to the great Glen Campbell starring Aaron Solomon and Sudbury’s own Leisa Way. Playing to sold-out audiences across the country, it’s a must-see for fans of great music. The new Artistic Director for Sudbury Theatre Centre, New Brunswick native Caleb Marshall spent the last five seasons as the Artistic Producer for Theatre New Brunswick where he launched TNB New Voices Opening Acts, TNB Next Stage Studio Branch, TNB Extras Reading and Presents series. He produced over 50 projects while at TNB, saw the highest percentage of NB theatre artists on stage in the companies 48 year history, oversaw the purchase of their building and the completion of an in-house studio theatre.
Next on the Mainstage is John Logan’s Red, the award-winning bioplay of Mark Rothko, the bad boy titan of the art world. It’s a piece I have a particular fondness for and I look forward to revisiting it on the STC stage. On behalf of the company, I’d like to thank our many partners and patrons for their support, and of course you, our beloved audience. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter, and feel free to contact me personally with your ideas for STC’s future. This is your theatre.
Prior to coming to Theatre New Brunswick, Caleb served as an Education Practitioner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre as well as resident director for their UK/European tour of Romeo & Juliet. He holds a BFA Honors in Acting from York University, an MFA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University London (UK) and trained with The Stratford Festival’s Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, Moscow’s GITIS Academy and on an International Artist Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Caleb has premiered roles for the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, The Blyth Festival, The Stratford Festival and the Old Vic in London. He has also taught workshops at festivals in Poland and Germany as well as teaching at St. Thomas and Dalhousie Universities.
Finally, I wish to thank our dear friend and colleague Judi Straughan for her over 15 years of integral service to STC. We will miss her daily energy, passion, and dedication to the company, and hope she always feels at home with us as she begins this new chapter of her life. Now, I invite you to experience this cross-cultural comic adventure... served with samosas!
Caleb is the chair of the Regional Theatres Caucus for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and recently hosted PACTCON2014 in Fredericton. He has received the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award and was recognized by the New Brunswick Arts Board with an Excellence Award in the Arts.
Enjoy the performance.
Select writing credits include three installments of Christmas @ theplayhouse (Fredericton Playhouse), Nights Below Station Street (NBActs, Eliot Haze Playwright Development Award), R&J (Toronto Fringe, Toronto Sun Fringe “Hot Pick”) Somme Letters Home (Atlantic Fringe/George Brown Theatre School/YPT). He also adapted Hockey Dreams for the stage with David Adams Richards and a new adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street with Erin Keating.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
ABOUT THE PLAY A Brimful of Asha is a Canadian theatrical phenomenon. It began as a 15-minute piece, blossomed into a full-length hit show at the Tarragon, was published in 2012 by Playwrights Canada Press, and is on an international tour. It is a unique and delicious experience that audiences across the country have taken to their hearts. Real-life mother and son Asha and Ravi Jain welcome the audience personally into their home and into their lives. Asha offers physical sustenance in the form of mouth-watering samosas, as well as spiritual nourishment. Everything in this play really happened, but there are say, two sides to every story. A mother and son equally passionate equally certain of the rightness of their position, debate the nature of love, what a son owes his parents, what parents owe their children and why Ravi should get married before it’s too late. Indian tradition and modern life. Arranged marriages and love matches.Finding someone with whom to live and create a family is a central task of our lives. Who wouldn’t want a little help from a concerned, knowledgeable, completely loving person who only wants what’s best for us? As Asha argues, “You can’t choose your parents or your children, why would you want to choose your wife?” Ravi’s response is one we’ve all said to our parents at one time or another, “Because I want to be the one who decides. Because it’s my life!” Both characters hope for understanding from each other. Both want Ravi to be happy. But who is right? Who will win the argument?
RAVI JAIN Ravi’s company Why Not Theatre was in residence at the Theatre Centre when he developed I’m So Close (winner of Spotlight Award at SummerWorks 2009, and toured to Dublin and Vancouver). He has assisted notable directors Daniel Brooks (Necessary Angel’s Hardsell), Richard Rose (Tarragon’s Courageous) and Jennifer Tarver (Stratford Festival’s King of Thieves), the latter as part of the inaugural Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction at the Stratford Festival. Select directing credits for Why Not include The Prince Hamlet, I’m So Close, A Brimful of Asha, Greenland (winner of NOW Audience Choice Award and Best Production SummerWorks 2009), Iceland (winner of NOW Audience Choice Award and Best New Play SummerWorks 2012). Ravi directed Nicolas Billon’s triptych of plays entitled Fault Lines which recently was awarded The Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. Ravi was a member of the DiverseCity Fellows program, which aims to diversify leadership across sectors in Toronto. He is engaged in many different arts organizations and creations across the city and the globe, including the programming committee for the Daniels Spectrum as well as the Artist Advisory Committee for ArtReach Toronto. He was recently awarded the 2012 Pauline McGibbon Award, is a resident artist at Soulpepper Theatre Company and was the inaugural Artistic Director-in-Residence at the Theatre Centre for 2013-2014. A BRIMFUL OF ASHA 13
A Brimful of Asha will make you laugh, make you think, and make you want to call your family. Its light touch and huge heart reminds us that we fight most passionately with those we love the most. Here’s to love.

A BRIMFUL OF ASHA Written, performed and directed by RAVI JAIN
The title A Brimful of Asha comes from a song written by British alternative rock band Cornershop (www.cornershop.com). Asha is my mother’s name. In Hindi it means hope. This play is for my family, whom I love very much, and am only now beginning to understand. Thanks for coming over and being part of our story. —Ravi Jain Why Not Theatre is grateful for the support from Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council’s National and International Touring program for supporting the tour of A Brimful of Asha. The show was originally developed and presented by the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. A Brimful of Asha is represented by Menno Plukker Theatre Agent Inc. for international touring.
