TALKING PODCASTS wi

The School of Wellbeing host Meg Durham

WORDS ERIN MILLER

Educate and help

“The School of Wellbeing podcast was created to provide big-hearted educators and parents with access to real conversations that inspire them to take the next step on their wellbeing journey. As a teacher, I became frustrated by the strong focus on academic performance, which often comes at the expense of the staff and student wellbeing. I am passionate about bringing the human element into school communities and beyond because when we feel better, we do better.”

Digital distractions

”The most popular podcast episode of 2021 was ‘Digital Distractions with Dr Kristy Goodwin’. In this conversation we discussed how technology is infiltrating and impacting every area of our lives. Technology has evolved as an important part of our daily lives and if we don’t learn how to manage it, it can have a significant impact on our health, productivity and relationships.”

“The best way we can help our young people to thrive at school and in life, is to surround them with thriving adults.”

— Meg Durham A lesson learnt

“When we have the courage to share our struggles and how we have navigated them, others start to believe that change is possible and it inspires them to take meaningful action. In one episode ,‘Mind Maintenance with Dr David Else’, I shared how valuable it is for me personally and professionally to work with a psychologist. Since releasing this episode I have received messages from listeners that are now seeking professional help for the first time — and this brings a big smile to my face.”

Student wellbeing

“One of the most significant impacts on student wellbeing is parent and teacher wellbeing. The best way we can help our young people to thrive at school and in life, is to surround them with thriving adults. To honour our basic human need to sleep, move, nourish, rest and connect. Young people learn more from what we do, than what we say.”

Self-care Saturday

“Each Saturday morning, I wake up early and drive down to the beach to go for an open water swim. I find this weekly ritual a wonderful way to reset my nervous system and start the weekend feeling energised.” THE AGING PROJECT

SHELLEY CRAFT Pick up some great ideas on how to age well. Host Shelley Craft interviews health and wellness experts who share their advice on making middle age and beyond more enjoyable. Orthopaedic surgeon Vonda Wright discusses the importance of mobility and nutritionist Simon Hill talks about the benefi ts of a plant-based diet.

There is no early detection test so women should be aware of the most common symptoms, which include increased abdominal size, abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full after eating a small amount and needing to urinate often or urgently.

JUNE

About 100 Australians die of bowel cancer each week, but it is treatable if caught early. June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and you can show your support this year by holding a fundraiser or selling bowel cancer awareness ribbons. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world — 1 in 13 people will develop the disease in their lifetime — so knowing the symptoms (such as a change in bowel habits or blood in your poo) and acting early is vital.
