Introduction

Foreword During the spring term of 2019 a diverse group of students at Lund University’s School of Architecture participated in the advanced course ‘Sustainable Urban Landscape’ (ASBN16) and its complementary theory course ‘Urban Landscape - Theory and Methods’ (ASBN11).

The course of Sustainable Urban Landscape deals with urban design through a greater perspective – the urban landscape. The spring design project begins with the students understanding of cities as a part of the larger landscapes. They are no longer approached as isolated urbanities, but are analyzed and approached from a regional perspective and put into a greater contextual setting.

The course focuses on design adhering to the cultural landscape contexts. The aim is to create a balance between the human and ecological systems. How can cities develop in relation to their setting in the landscape? Can that landscape become a driver for sustainability strategies, and generate new ideas for living in synergy with the natural

Sustainable Urban Landscape

environment?

4

The design task this year was to develop a strategy for how and where Öresund NW region will grow. The work started with a study trip to the area in order to get an understanding of the landscape and its history. After working in groups to form strategies for the region’s future development, the students zoomed in to the municipality of Ängelholm, which is expected to grow in the future around the train stations. Critical questions were: Where and how can the Öresund NW region grow? How can a region better manage its resources through site specific urban development? How can a local place and its landscape characteristics play a critical role in sustainable regional development?

The design studio resulted in 28 unique projects in which students challenged conventional notions of sustainability and proposed new structures preparing for and supporting the process of urban transformation in Ängelholm municipality at the three different sites.

Introduction

Course Outline and Objectives Sustainable Urban Landscape The aim of the design course Sustainable Urban Landscape is to develop the students’ skills in designing strategic visions for sustainable landscapes in context of a large regional scale and evolving these vision into a specific design on the project site. This is primarily achieved by the students, carrying out an advanced design assignment. In parallel the students have to describe, analyze and evaluate urban structures, contexts and development strategies from architectural, ecological, humanist and socio-economic perspectives.

In this course students are expected to investigate critical issues in regional urban planning and are challenged to consider the ecological aspects of the site’s landscape. Students learn through their design process, how a local place and its landscape characteristics can play a critical role in sustainable regional development.

The design task this semester was to rethink the current fabric of the city of Ängelholm and develop a strong vision to accommodate to its expected growth. The improved train linkage and the airport connector can be great generators for the city, which will require rethinking of functions and supportive infrastructure. The aim is to envision how Ängelholm can become an asset for the Öresund NW region by using this potential for growth, while at the same time lifting up the qualities of the surrounding landscape characteristics - coastal,

Sustainable Urban Landscape

forest and farmland.

8

Design Site Ängelholm, Sweden Ängelholm, in the north of Skåne, is a small town with approximately 40 000 inhabitants in the municipal district with a well-established connection to the Öresund NW region and a certain appeal. It has a picturesque town center and it is located close to the beachy sands and the Kronoskogen forest. The closeness to the valuable landscape of arable fields and lush deciduous forest and the position at the innermost point of Skälderviken bay are the prominent features that offer a variety of ecological benefits but also define the city’s character.

Historically Ängelholm’s city center boomed with thriving industry of bricks, sugar, metal, leather etc. Today the big Tudor Battery Company and The Scan Slaughter House, once providing work for nearly 900 employees, have long closed doors due to economic shifts and technological advancements. And while demolition carries out environmental hazards and loss of resources for the municipality, currently the empty plots and abandoned buildings are merely memory remnants of an old industrial town. In close proximity to the railway station, this top location presents a challenge for the municipality of how to reintegrate the site to the city fabric. How improved connectivity and urban renewal can become drivers for

SUDes 2018

a brand new Ängelholm identity?

9

Introduction

Design Site Ängelholm, Sweden To the West, adjacent to the train station is Kronoskogen forest. In the 1700’s these sand fields were planted with trees as a precaution against flying sands that used to reach the city center. Today the fully grown forest has become a natural asset but also suffers from inaccessibility, bad drainage and lack of program. Could sensitive planning transform Kronoskogen from a production forest into a showcase for sustainable urban design , in balance and synergy with the man-made nature?

Barkåkra with its recent train station is also a locus of municipal interest. The site is bordering a number of entrepreneurship and is located only 2.5 km away from the Ängelholm-Helsinborg airport. Thus, the area is expected to undertake urban development in near future. The specific setting of the landscape - between stone beach and agricultural plains - ought to be a vital part of the urban strategy in order to preserve the authenticity and biodiversity of the area. This raises questions of how economical, socio-cultural and ecological factors can be intertwined with urbanism in a conscious way?

In the light of the Öresund NW growth Ängelholm municipality has started to reconsider the current city layout and has recognized the urging need for guiding framework plans. In response to that need, our students have been asked to come up with new strategies and propose visions for how to think when planning the expansion and densification of both fabric and everyday life in Ängelholm. During the process they worked with the three distinct sites – Ängelholm Center, Kronoskogen forest and Barkåkra.

In the beginning of the semester, the students had the opportunity to pay a visit to Ängelholm municipality and learn about the planning principles and on-going developments processes. Later on they focused on their exploration of the three given areas in order to collect data grasping in different ways landscape, social, cultural and spatial aspects.

During the trip a broader study of the city outskirts and bordering villages was needed in

Sustainable Urban Landscape

order to develop the students’ perspective of the region and the influence of local landscape

10

elements, architecture and ecology. The students met and involved into discussion with two distinct entrepreneurs - Vejby Vingård and Engelholmglass. Learning about the manufacturing processes, collaboration with local farmers and significance of the productive landscape for everyday life were necessary for the students’ future proposals.

Introduction

Working Process Course Structure The semester was divided into four phases. Each exploring different components and aspects of the region. The phases worked to deepen the students understanding of the landscape and got them familiar with planning strategies for sustainable built environments in the scales from regional to local.

The first two phases, “Regional Strategy” and “Landscape Perspectives” were set up as group assignments. Here the students explored the site through a regional perspective.

Students analyzed the Öresund NW region focusing on the large scale landscape uses and visions. This provided a base of understanding for regional planning and strategies for the site where they would propose new and/or adapted development. The last two phases were individual work where each student developed their ideas to create a long term sustainable plan for their site.

Each period, stretching for 3 to 4 weeks, ended with student presentations to a jury evaluating their progress and pushing their work forward. Through the guest critics’ comments and weekly individual tutorials, the students work deepened and gained greater levels of detail in order to tackle the challenges posed by the four phases in the course.

The beginning of each week was reserved for seminars, lectures and tutorials that provided inspiration for the students’ work. The second half of the week was dedicated to the studio, where each student could think about and develop their project and spatial understanding of the site. KICK OFF

Study Trip Edinburgh, Scotland This semester the students traveled to Edinburgh. The subject of study was the city and the landscape and the processes taking place simultaneously between and in both of them. The students gained insight into the role of landscape both in the surrounding villages and also within the dense city fabric of Edinburgh and how different views on the landscape has shaped the city through different times.

The students were fortunate to receive a lecture at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture by Lisa Mofitt and took part of their thesis exhibitions and had the possibility to visit one of their studios.

By stepping in to this urban laboratory the students explored how the landscape has created qualities in the city, how the design of landscape has been utilized to shape space and how

Sustainable Urban Landscape

landscape elements create the multiple atmospheres that compose Edinburgh today.

Projects

The aim of the Individual part of the Design Project is to allow the students tell a holistic story through composing a detailed plan for development in their chosen sites.

This is time when the students explore their ideas based on the previous phases of analysis and strategy and turn them into concrete proposals. The issues and potentials that were identified are turned into physical spaces, given real dimensions and performance. This is the student’s final step in their design process towards the holistic proposal of the future transformation for the city of Ängelholm.

The life in the proposal site area should include all aspects of a sustainable city. The overall aim is to create new urban experiences within the new urban places in Ängelholm. These are the places where we live, work, commute, relax and enjoy the everyday life. These are the places where people grow and can unfold their lives to their full potential.

The following pages illustrate the students proposals and visions for the city of Ängelholm. It is our hope that all of the students hard work and energy can inspire you as much as it has inspired us throughout the semester. DIAGRAMS: MARCIO THOMASI

Densify Green is a place where you live with the nature...

The vision lies within the development goals, as a way to align them with the interests of global sustainable development. In Ängelholm, The main point of this proposal is to have green residential area that is mixed use surrounded by dense and biodiversity parks and forest.

Sustainable Urban Landscape

Keeping and recycling the existing building as well as consider and understand the needs in this Ängelholm led to propose mixed use area where you can find bars, markets and liveable public spaces in the first story and flats on top of it.

26

Considering the sun access in the proposal led to have different typologies such as low row houses, green roofs blocks as well as green balconies due to it is not only place to live, it should be green vitality area that is located by the train station. The area is all surrounded by green area that are not really accessible, however, the design

proposes to connect all the green areas together and make the green and blue structure as natural elements in the proposal in different way such as having parks, forests as well as the green balconies and roofs. By choosing different typologies with different buildings’ heights and considering the the orientation in the design will lead to get more sun access, less shaded places and less energy consuming. The studied area is near the train station and it is housing area that generates in general more heat and that is why the green roofs can play huge role in cooling down the area. By choosing specific trees’ types, it attracts more animals and wild life to the place and increases the biodiversity.

VILLAGE SECTION

The Swedish land reforms between 1750-1820 had a dramatic effect on the historical development of Barkåkra. The largest of these - the Storskiftet consolidated many smaller farms, and resulted in almost the entire settlement of Barkåkra vanish. The global move towards large-scale farming has dislocated communities, and furthered the devastation of local ecosystems. Living in a global industrialised food complex, we continue to exist largely disconnected from food production cycles. This project echoes a pre-Storskiftet Barkåkra to create new opportunities to connect with green. The goal is to establish locally productive lifestyle which embraces social and environmental sustainability.

The residential components are a reintepretation of the skånekänga. Up to four separate houses form a central private courtyard and are placed amongst a network of increasingly public laneways, plazas and green corridors. Different families occupy each house sharing the central courtyards as a space for food production. There is still a place for globalisation in Barkåkra. Anchored by the train station, a new Main Street reinforces the ease of global movement as it connects Valhall Park to he Öresund region. This supports Barkåkra’s alternative lifestyle and enables business in a sustainable and meaningful way.

“Kronoskogon, as the natural premises of life in Angelholm!”

The tree tenant project, imagines Kronoskogan to evolve from being a barrier to the sea, and land for timber production, to becoming the well tended garden of the city leading to the sea.

Sustainable Urban Landscape

It is crucial that Kronoskogan, in tandem with the green infrastructure, in and around the city, are not treated as empty spaces with vegetation but a living being that actively enhances the quality of life in Angelholm.

30

To live , work and play in Kronoskogan, several strategies that come together to create a cyclic sustainable effect have been proposed. Among them , the concept of shared economy, resource and living is of great impotance. To reimagine ways of living as a respectful tenant, a balance of consumption and production is key. Strategies of food production as a farming community are applied, aiming for atleast self sustenance of the forest dwellers and

the city. Private and public programs for healing, entertaining and eco tourism are introduced to the site. There is a focus on pollination corridors to enhance the biodiversity of kronoskogan and the city in general, along with creation of varied green experiences. The tree tenant project acknowledges great ecological, social and financial value of Kronoskogen, and demonstrates ways of sensitively reclaiming it . The Kronoskogon and the forest wealth could become the natural premises of life in Ängelholm.

AXONOMETRIC VIEW

Forests or landscapes are dynamic systems, i.e. they are constantly changing and developing. This dynamic can be influenced and controlled in different directions. Through design both ani-

mals and human life can be enriched.

32

ÄNGELHOLM is located in north-eastern Skåne, along one of sweden’s busiest railway networks. As part of the growing Øresund region Ängelholm is within reach from larger cities. The city of Ängelholm has plenty of opportunities to grow with the help of sustainable commuting. The landscape in northwest Skåne is characterized by flat farmlands framed by green oases placed on ridges. The natural values around are mainly linked to the landscape that surrounds the waterways. On a regional scale this project aims to connect these green oases that surround the agricultural landscape with the help of the watercourses. By enabling trails along the watercourses you can experience a great variety of landscapes within a relatively short distance. KRONOSKOGEN is today divided mainly into two characters. One is the sand forest with high natural values and protected by nature 2000. But the majority of the forest is dominated by

production forests with low natural values. In a natural forest ecosystem, the trees survive their entire life cycle: they grow up, grow old, die, and fall over. The forest consists of trees of different species and in different stages of its life, which gives many ecological niches. But in a production forest, all the trees are of the same species and the same age, and they are cut down at a relatively young age, changing the living conditions of the species that live there. On a local scale this project aims to turn the artificial pine forests around the city into natural, structurally rich forest, which are resistant to climate extremes. This is an opportunity to engage the entire city of Ängelholm in this replanting developing Kronoskogen into a forest for both humans and animals. The new plating of Kronoskogen educates about the connections between the climate change, the forest and its importance for inhabitants of Ängelholm.

COMMUNAL GARDENS TO ACTIVATE THE SOCIAL LIFE

“Produce Barkåkra Now is about living, working and enjoying life next to the nature”

The project Produce Barkåkra NOW! is a call to change the lifestyle and bringing back the possibility to live, produce, work and enjoy in rural areas. The goal of the project is to make rural areas and small towns more attractive to live and work while being in constant contact with the natural landscape.

Sustainable Urban Landscape

The concept design has three core principles: low intensive agriculture, energy efficient housing and protection of biodiversity. The area is divided into three zones: the farming zone, the housing zone and the greenery zone.

34

The farming area is located in the center of the site, it is divided into small plots dedicate to grow ecological goods. Nearby the train station there is a Farm Market to serve as spot for farmers to sell their produce. In order to reach a sustainable lifestyle, it is necessary to promote life equality and sense of community. For this

reason, the housing zones are mixed typologies and divided into clusters with shared gardens to incentivize people to socialize and produce their own food. To complement, passive houses with shared greenhouses were proposed to extend the possibility to farm during the winter and conserve solar energy that can be used for heating. The project has 450 housing units, 06 commercial buildings plus Farm Market, Art Museum and the Salamander Heaven, for enviromental education. It is estimated around 1500 people living in the projected area. Finally, the greenery zones are dedicated to preserve the local landscape and protect the natural habitat of salamanders (species protected by EU law).

As in the process of an osmosis, this project is about create a filter between the city and the forest, by removing the hedge of the railway that nowadays separate this two sides.

The design of the roads will change, with a safer path for pedestrian and bikers and giving the possibility to public transportation to reach the west part of the area.

Today, around the area we can find two important nodes, Klitterbyn and a camping in the north-west part and the railway station and the city center in the middle-east one. But the entire area lacks of good connections and facilities.

The core of the forest, is just touched by few interventions, enough to make it more attractive without ruin the beauty of the landscape, and the existing walkways improved to make the forest more accessible.

The main idea is then to create a new settlement with new nodes of importance without ruin the beauty of the forest. The project develops along the existing roads, with new housing and three different squares. The settlement will be the result of the union of forest and buildings, where the typologies provide the views on the nature around.

THE PRIMARY LIVING AREA IN CORRELATION TO THE SECONDARY LIVING AREA. APPLIED IN A GLOBAL SCALE THE AMOUNT OF SPACE NEEDED WOULD BE LESS THAN EUROPE.

“Ask not what you can do for the world. Ask what’s for dinner

Sustainable Urban Landscape

and where it derives from.”

38

Today we live in a world with 7.7 billion people and statistics shows that this will grow to 10 billion in 2050. In the main time, living standards, in general, are increasing which usually leads to more area demanding diets and if everyone would have a regular European city dweller diet we would need three planet earth’s to supply the population with food. To handle this dilemma it seems that we need to change to a less area demanding diet. In 2014 UN habitat made a report where they described the recommendation of the density of cities which is 150 people per hectare. Now imagine how much space is needed if everyone lived in one particular place, with this density as a standard everyone would be able to live in Sweden and Denmark. Let us envision that everyone had a vegetarian diet then the amount of space needed to supply everyone with food would only be half of Europe. This idea gives us a perspective on how much space we

actually need to supply the population with food and how much space we could just let be for e.g. let the earth heal. This is the base of the project ‘Human foodprints’ where the primary living area (150 p/ha including living, working, travelling) correlates to the secondary living area (including the primary living area and the amount of space needed for growing vegetarian food) with a factor 10. The Human foodprint as a method is then applied on a smaller scale in Barkåkra close to Ängelholm, Sweden. Barkåkra is located close to a train station and the office cluster of Valhall Park and in the main time, it has one of the best soil qualities in Sweden. It is an interesting choice of development where it is important to reconsider all the qualities of the area and strengthen these to create a unique place to live a resilient lifestyle where you are able to grow your own food and still be able to have a rather regular lifestyle.

“A way to build on good farming soil and on the same time keep the possibility for farming and

Sustainable Urban Landscape

gardening in a small scale.”

40

The landscape of Ängelholm is characterized by woodland to the East and the bay Skälderviken to the West. The landscape from above almost looks like its made from patches, like a quilt. Ängelholms rich farming and agrian history is implemented in the block structure of the project. Each building has its own yard, but the block shares a community courtyard with possibilities for a green house and a shared garden. Another part of the project is the bigger allotments that are to be leased for commercial/semi-commercial use to private persons, organizations or companies. The idea with this is to give the possibility for engaging people to do gardening as a part of the income aswell as a purely recreational value. This could also be a way to build on good farming soil and on the same time keep the possibility for gardening and farming in a small scale. The tradition with allotment gardening in Sweden comes from the late 1800s,

originally from Germany. The idea with allotment gardens was that worker families with no acess to grenery could get to grow their own food in a little strip of land and in that way also get to keep costs down. Later on, during the 1950s and later, the welfare was much higher and allotment gardens became more of a recreational purpose. The cities may not be as dark, polluted and crowded as in the late 1800s, but from a socially sustainable perspective this can have a benefiting purpose for those who want to start a gardening organization or those who live in Ängelholm or neighbour cities with no acess to greenery. The block structure follows the strategy with patches. Each building has its own yard, but the block shares a community courtyard with a common green house. Meeting spaces or squares makes it possible for farmer’s markets or basically selling vegetables, flowers or crops locally produced, literally in the in the neighbour garden.

KRONOSKOGEN AND THE NEW DEVELOPMENT IN ITS ENTIRETY.

“Bringing the existing authentic values of Kronoskogen to the forefront, while also bringing life to the journey towards the ocean

Sustainable Urban Landscape

is key”

42

Kronoskogen was from the beginning a measure to stop coastal erosion and from sand blowing into the city center. Nowadays it’s used mainly as a ground for recreation, such as running, camping, casual dog walking, wave surfing and off-road biking. The 430 hectare forest has a already well-developed network of running trails, and designated areas for mountain biking. To me it was quite obvious that there was an opportunity for further recreational development, since the area is so popularly used and appreciated by the local inhabitants. The main challenges within the design site is the homogenous and car-orientated road that leads to the ocean, and trying to preserve some of the natural values which marks this area as an escape from the urban city life. It became clear that Kronoskogen could benefit from strengthened recreational possibilities, with more activities and

services than are available today. For this I propose new recreational sites, which could also make way for other businesses such as gyms, rental shops and short-term accommodation. This could also attract people on a regional scale, such as orienteering and running clubs which there are plenty of within commuting distance from Ängelholm. My overall vision of Kronoskogen is founded in both the local desires of the inhabitants and the need for more housing in the city. The will of the people is however clear: preserve the forest and strengthen the recreational values! The very clear and defined border between the urban environment and the forest landscape I think is the greatest asset. It makes Kronoskogen into an authentic relief from the urban life in the city, and plays an important role in the well-being of Ängelholm at large. The ambition is to fulfil this vision before 2040.

NEW STREETSCAPE

1. Buffertparkering.

“The use upcycle qualities of the past cultural identity of Skåne, while using modern sustainable practices creates a new holistic identity that can be added to the collective vision of

Sustainable Urban Landscape

the future of Ängelholm.”

44

Barkåkra lies just north of Ängelholm. Barkåkra became a settlement during the iron and bronze age. Like many other areas agriculture villages, during the agricultural land reforms of 1803 (enskifte), farms and settlements were forced to separate and to make way for larger scale, monoculture agriculture. The increasing growth of the Ängelholm municipality has the community soul searching for what its vision for the future should be. Like many “secondtier” cities it is searching for its identifier. Each part of Ängelholm has a specific and rich identity, Ängelholm municipality does not have one single identity but it is a patchwork of many different visions. The vision of the new development is to create a new settlement that reclaims qualities of the medieval village that once existed throughout Skåne and Denmark. These qualities paired with modern building practices and sustainability will create the vision of

the modern village. The new urban plan respects the landscape by keeping the settlement small scale with a gradient of density in such a way to keep areas open that can be used for small scale polyculture farming. The majority of the building material will be products that have been upcycled, therefore lengthening the lifespan of building materials to move towards a more cyclical building practice. The new settlement of Barkåkra will upcycle good qualities of the past cultural identity of Skåne while using modern sustainable practices to create a new holistic identity that can be added to the collective vision of the future of Ängelholm.

“Living in the forest with the

trees”

46

Kronoskogen is a high value recreational area in the municipality of Ängelholm. This forest is very unique in the region because of its location between the city centre and the beach, and its accessibility. The density of the forest has a calming effect, since it blocks most of the perceivable city life. The main road that runs through the forest, creates an important connection between the city and the beach. However, it is rather long (approx. 1km), straight, and dull, and it has a dividing effect in the forest. My vision for this new development in Kronoskogen is an area that is embedded in the local context by creating physical and symbolic links to the surrounding. The most important part is the feeling of connectedness with the forest during your stay in the gläntor. This is done by keeping close proximity to the trees and maintaining as much of the forest as possible while creating new space for housing, offices, and recreation. The

connection with the surroundings is strengthend symbolically by creating an architectural language that reflects the aesthetics of the trees and by using local materials like wood and brick. The new development will begin with adding public facilities towards the end of the main road like a hotel with penthouse restaurant, a naturrum, and a viewing tower. These will serve as an activator for people to enter and enjoy the forest. The second stage will be creating a more work-oriented environment at the entrance of the forest, closely accessible from the train station. This will create opportunities both for living and working in a unique and natural environment. The last stage is expanding on the second phase. This is done by adding clusters of building with mostly housing, but also public and recreational functions. These three stages will be completed in fifteen years, taking five years each.

The Öresund region across Sweden and Denmark represents a common history for both nations and is also one of the most dynamics areas for research and innovation due to the well established network of communication infrastructure. As part of this regional network, the city of Ängelholm is located in the northwest of Skåne. Barkåkra is located on the northern outskirts of the city, a development area composed by countryside houses, agricultural land and regional infrastructures such as the train station, Valhall Park and the Ängelholm Helsingborg Airport.Though a connected area with the context, Barkåkra is also an isolated suburb of fragmented scenarios disconnected from the city´s urban fabric. However, the current natural and cultural elements of this landscape are references that define the identity of the place.

Throughout history, Ängelholm has defined its identity from the relationship between tradition (memory) and modernity (technology). A duality that also represents the identity of the Swedish landscape: being inside in the city - being outside in the countryside. The concept of Vårdträd, typical of the Swedish tradition, represents an intermediate state not only as a metaphor about time and memory but also as a space that provides shelter for the people and scale to the landscape; the courtyard as architectural element of reference and transition. The proposal for Barkåkra is an intermediate place that reconnects the fragmented landscape scenarios as a new sustainable centrality for Ängelholm, a new place where technology and tradition interact. Taking into consideration the topography, the built landscape is the sustainable design strategy to define territories of activity at different levels.

Ängelholm is a city which is located in the north west of Öresund region and make this city as an important regional node. This city becomes second option to live by connecting many cities in Skane to other big cities such as Gothenburg, Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö, and Copenhagen. By having these opportunities, Ängelholm can play important role in the region to strengthen the connection of Southern Sweden and becomes first option to live. Furthermore, Ängeholm has strong identities with its natural resources such as beach and forest. Those components provide rich qualities for the city and become reasons why tourists want to come. People can go there by walking through interesting trails in the forest. It is important to keep these existing potentials and develop them become stronger assets for the city in the future. At the end, maybe Angelholm becomes a place where people want to stay.

Unfortunately, existing condition of main road is not good for walking. There are lack of programs and activities. It feels take a long time walking to the beach because the emptiness. The spaces are only active in specific time then make that place so quiet. In order to solve this issue, I plan programs which make people feel the gap between the beach and the city is getting closer. It is crucial to fill blank spaces in the main road with green corridor that not only link the beach and the city but also connect the forest with new habitat on the other side. Green corridor determines new edges of the city and beach. At the same time, it works as extension of urban life to the recreational spots (forest trails, camp site, summer housing, and beach).

The one striking feature of the site is its diverse landscape - the site is encompassed with the agricultural land, the sea and forest. The boundaries of the site are varying and each edge brings about a different character to the site. The site also lies within the Medicon Valley which consists of 350 biotech, Medtech and pharma companies with 40,000 employees and 6,000 PhD students. The site is surrounded by agricultural land and even within the given site about 40% of the site is an existing agricultural land. The Valhall Park right across the site is an existing business park with many prestigious companies bringing about job opportunities to the local. Another important or anchor feature for the site is the newly built railway station with a steady flow of trains running at regular intervals and the airport with many flights to places within Sweden and few international destinations.

Developing the Medicon Valley by merging the biotechnology and agricultural field. With a huge part of the site dedicated to agriculture and a business park in close proximity gives the site a great opportunity to be a meeting place for the business and agricultural activities to help each other and develop. The Valhall Park could be extended out to bring in some more biotechnological companies that would be interested to use the agricultural land and bring about innovative ways to use the land throughout the year and help the agricultural land around. The symbiotic relationship between the agriculture and business can bring about innovative activities to the area. This would also as a whole from a regional level the area contributes in connecting the technology link.

Beach, dunes, city, agricultural landscape and a forest, all elements present in Ängelholm and components of this design proposal. The urban design principles and visions for the site were based on emphasizing and making stronger the connections between the city and its different landscapes, the densification and the use of green structures as elements of urban development along the borders of the Kronoskogen and to secure and enhance the forest as key element for the proposal. The project proposal seeks to make Ängelholm a more sustainable area through the use of the landscape and the existing infrastructure to create new spaces, mix of uses and functions through different typologies, urban densification in key locations and the creation of a protection belt for the forest and its ecosystems, all well integrated with the local context.

The objective of the urban plan is to solve design challenges through a proposal based on shared urban spaces that are designed to bring up the forest into the urban fabric, using the street as the main drive force. The proposal also create a protection for the forest, especially along the edges of the forest, to emphasize the different uses of forest areas such as hiking routes, walks, leisure activities and exploration, shared streets with bikes and public transportation on focus, the implementation of a main square in a strategic location of the site, and areas of urban densification along avenues and existing urban infrastructure.

Many of us would not remove our comforts in life for a more sustainable living. The ECO Installation is about how to install (adapt) a sustainable living (but to keep all our modernitites and comforts) to a specific site. That means there are some requirements to make this enough sustainable. It should be 50% self-sufficient when it comes to vegetables, and also a high self sufficiency when it comes to energy. We need to have a future where we both localize but still globalize. Here works the technical solutions together with the social solutions. Therefore there are some requirements of what social spaces it should contain, that has clear features of ecological and economical sustainability.

The installation adapts to the sites landscape specifics. For the Barkåkrasite there already are waterflow due to the topography and ponds, which gives an opportunity to handle the stormwater naturally and use it as a feature in the urban design. The history and landscape characteristics of Skåne has given Skåne a specific architecture which should be emphasized. The site has an amazing sightline to the sea, which gives the area it’s sea-feeling. Eco installation is a project showing how we install a site specific sustainable development!

60

As is always faced by urban development in places with great value of natural quality, the problem of what planners/ designers should do or should not do, is also faced by Kronoskogen. Going through the whole researching process, the most important challenge is that, how to identify the forest and try to solve the social problems (aging population, people coming out from Ängelholm...) at thesametime. Therefore, inthisproject, water becomes a significant element, which can not only help to improve local quality, create a new forest identity, but also make them visible and usable by human. Firstly, the local water system is not completed to allow the forest to have a sustainable, self-purify process. In winter or rainy seasons, trials inside will become wet and muddy, which is not suitable for outdoor activities. It may lead to the problem that most of the visitors only come in summer. Secondly, some wasted water streams do not have

suitable management, especially in back off areas along the street. They have large opportunities to create better environment in both social and natural sides. Last but not least, the rich local biodiversity can also be protected and improved by completing local water system. Based on the key points above, the main design strategy in this project is to firstly identify a better forest by a new water system with richer biodiversity, and then different social needs and life styles can be considered to merge in. Finally, housing areas combined with seasonal water system, cultural buildings with wetlands in the fringe park, mix-used urban blocks with offices and residents as well as outdoor educational site and seasonal gardens for protecting local insects are all tried to provide possibilities and solutions to Kronoskogen.

“This project aims to enrich the area with urban qualities for tourism, business, housing and, above all, to transform the site into an attractive place for

Sustainable Urban Landscape

people.”

64

To achieve that goal, I propose these 7 urban principles: 1-Strengthen the existing city center 2-Use the urban qualities of the historical center 3-Create a sense of place and uniqueness by connecting with the landscapes 4-Incorporate different scales of greenery into everyday life 5-Use compact and diverse types of typologies 6-Consider walkable distance to daily things 7-Prioritize public transport To implement those principles in this specific site the following landscape strategies were considered for the new urban design: -Connecting the Landscapes: a bustram that connects the City Center, the beach and the forest. -A green network: new green paths and corridors which connect with the existing green areas.

- Developing nodes: a Business District, Cultural Node, Green Naturum and the Beach. -A continuous city: Bringing the urban qualities of the historical center to the design area. Walking through the old town of Angelholm I found two urban qualities that stand out and shape the character of the city: first, the city depth. That is when you walk through the city and discover “hidden” spaces where you experience different feelings and sensations. For this to work, the spaces must be connected and work in different atmosphere (in scale, uses, typologies, public and private, green densities…) The second finding, “a city around the corner”, looks into how the streets vary in character, creating a grid that diversify from commercial to residential character street just around the corner. This way all different uses seems close and connected to each other.

“Ängelholm: when the city becomes an entrance to the landscape”

Since the plantation of the Angelholm forest, wood became the main resource of the city and a part of its history. I chose this identity to guide my project. The main goal is to make people closer to the surrounding landscape.

Sustainable Urban Landscape

At a regional scale, the city can be an entrance to the landscape. It becomes very important to make people discover and understand the natural asset of the region in order to take care of it in the future. At a local scale, the city needs to be denser, to afford the increase of the population, without spreading into the landscape.

66

In order to densify, the former industrial part will become the continuity of the old center with a mixed use of offices, shops and housing. The project introduce new typologies which deal with the solar access and create new public spaces.

I keep its history by reusing the industrial building. The biggest one will become a wood construction school. The goal is to bring students and to increase the knowledge about wood. The train station also has to be rethink. I want to create a real gathering point around it, including a place with café, restaurant and shops. It will become a central point of the city.

When Barkåkra in 2015 got its own train stop, the small village suddenly became a very strategic place to develop. With a commuting time of only 30 minutes to both Helsingborg and Halmstad, it’s a perfect place to live if you are looking for a life outside of the city. Barkåkra is offering a magnificent landscape and the site itself is right in the middle of it. You don’t have to choose between the water and the beaches, the forest or the long open views over the farming land. In Barkåkra you have it all. This design proposal is developed to suit those who want to live in a rural area where the landscape has a big impact, but still be a part of a bigger community and easily visit or work in a city. The design aims to ensure that Barkåkras new inhabitants will have the possibility to take part of everything the surrounding landscape has to offer. To secure this, I have worked with six principles that all strive for an everyday life with a present landscape.

The project starts in connection to the train station to create a new centre and buildings are placed to form a square that welcomes you when getting of the train. From the square, you can easily navigate yourself further into the neighbourhood and in less than ten minutes you can reach the entire area by foot. The different typologies are designed to offer both private and public spaces, and are adjusted to the landscape. In the new part of Barkåkra it’s easy to live the life you want. A life in fine balance between rural and urban, where you don’t need a car and where the landscapes presence is obvious.

COMMUNITARY URBAN FARMING

“The goal of the proposal is to transform this ‘wasted’ land, land that is not used for anything particular during most part of the year into a new product, through urban

Sustainable Urban Landscape

farming.”

70

Farms could be considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest example of man-made landscape with productive purposes. With time farms have become part of our cultural values, and thanks to their aesthetic and “green” qualities they could be considered today a common territory between the productive and the recreational landscapes. Now, farms are being progressively included into urban areas, helping to mitigate the reduction of farmlands due to the urban sprawl. Urban farming provides a renewed set of tools for facing the increasing needs in food security, public health, public space quality and biodiversity. Ängelholm is facing several challenges, in one hand the municipality wants to increase the population and has plans for urban growth in different areas within and in the border of the urban area. On the other hand, Ängelholm is surrounded by farmland, with the best

soil quality in the region. In order to formulate an efficient land use, this proposal considered the activities during a normal year in both sides of Råbockavägen, starting from Råbocka Camping and finishing in the train station. Some areas, such as the parking in front of the camping, and the camping are almost not used during fall, winter and spring. The goal of the proposal is to transform this “wasted” land, land that is not used for anything particular during most part of the year into a new product, through urban farming. This operation of Landscape recycling is a long term task that requires the participation of the community, the private actors involved in the touristic activities of the area and the municipality.

Ängelholm is located in Skåne, which is filled with lush green landscape and has farming traditions. The region is flat and is considered the best agricultural land in Sweden. People of Ängelholm live in distinct, yet connected towns, where they can work globally while embracing a sustainable lifestyle that invites people to explore the forests, the sea, and the rural landscape. The vision for Barkaka is to be a green sustainable village, to embrace sustainable industries in respect to the landscape and the town. First phase is the area near the train station it has a public plaza and coffee shop. The second phase is the development the education area, which is an extension to the green academy present in the Valhal business park, I set up a green academy for people to specialize about farming. Taking into consideration the lush green and agricultural soil, it is the most suitable

place for farming, with wide farming fields, green houses and various labs for students and researchers to learn and specialize in agricultural farming. Near the salamander lake, a Naturum will be situated, which will spread awareness about the importance of nature conservation and preservation to the community. At the opposite side is the student accommodation for students who study at the academy. To emphasize the importance of nature preservation and conservation, the housing areas are designed in a way that will contribute to a sustainable way of life. Housing types include row houses, low-medium rise buildings, that are designed in a diverse cluster format, that have greenhouses & farmlands and private/semi public, and public open spaces. There’s also a public square and community center for social gatherings and activities, to develop a social community for the people of Barkakra.

74

The project developed following four main elements which created the leading guidelines and design principles: 1. Preserve and respect the existing natural areas in the site, strengthen its connection with the surroundings 2. The proposed built environment must adapt to the landscape, working, understanding and embracing the existing topography 3. Link the nearby towns creating a distinctive building typology that has a coherent dialog with the existing built environment 4. Use the existing roads in the site, activate them using the train station as a central node and improve the connectivity between towns

The project aims to densify the area without disrupting the existing urban language. Due to this fact, specific housing typologies were proposed for the area, with the aim to attract a variety of residents, diversifying the future inhabitants of Barkåkra. In addition, embracing and respecting the existing nature was a key factor in the design process of the project. . Each public space has a specific character, promoting a variety of activities and healthy habits Other important component of the project was to provide a strong and clear connectivity. The goal is to provide easy access of all buildings to the train station, as well as to create a clear relation to the nearby towns and main roads. Hence, inhabitants have the possibility to commute easily, strengthen Barkåkra’s connectivity.

“Exploring new typologies, that respond with respect to the wide variety of existing urban

76

The need for high quality agricultural land continues to increase, yet at the same time expanding cities claim more and more of these lands to be able to respond to the growing housing demand. These situations require solutions to maintain the growing city within its existing borders. Most cities consist of a wide variety of ‘city landscapes’, and new typologies need to be explored, which can respond with respect to these unique urban landscapes. En-tree is a project that explores a new typology for the urban forest, Kronoskogen. The new typology consists of three layers of decks and housing, built from wood harvested in Kronoskogen itself. The height of the buildings is respectful towards the character of the trees. To allow more light to reach the houses, the decks have strategically placed cutouts, and openings between the buildings provide views to the surrounding forest.

A big part of the new design for Kronoskogen is based on its recreational possibilities. Nowadays there are several hiking routes, which can sometimes be unclear from the outside and are used below its potential. En-tree will provide clear points of arrival and guide people into the forest, to promote to explore the beauty of this area. When arriving by train, the big watchtower next to the train station sparks curiosity and invites arriving people to go up and experience the view. Once up on the tower, they will see the other watchtower popping up out of the forest, which gives a sense of direction and curiosity. If visitors arrive by other forms of transport over Råbockavägen, the clearly framed north side of the street, together with the open character of the new typology, will guide people into the forest and show how you can live in a dense neighborhood in harmony with a forest.

“Housings will vanish into the landscape and appear only if in some points. This is the Haha

Sustainable Urban Landscape

Concept”

78

Surrounded by agricultural fields, and located in an efficient transport network which makes it close to the Medicon Valley, the idea is to create a brand-new community among Ängelholm villages, based on local production and local consumption of food. Heavily marked in the past by traditional detached houses, new Barkåkra will focus on the creation of social clusters integrated into the surrounding landscape, making production farmland accessible and biodiverse again. Using local agronomical research from Valhall Park, the new design will experiment local production of food to create a self-sufficient neighbourhood. People will be able to harvest crops directly outside their doors to reduce food waste, to lower energy consumption and to increase food (and life) quality. The quality of the soil in the area allows this. However, it restrains the use of land. So, the concept is firstly to implement

aquaponic farm, more space efficient, but also to use the topography of the place. Thus, buildings will merge with the ground, allowing the production of food between them and on the roof. It will also improve its integration in such an agricultural landscape, merging built and natural elements. Housings will vanish into the landscape and appear only if in some points. This is the Haha Concept. Social clusters will be connected to already present natural features of the site. Moreover, new social spaces will be created in their inner-core… Connected together and varying in terms of scale and typology, it will create a diverse network of social clusters. Finally, new Barkåkra will provide a healthier rural way of life, bringing people closer to the natural landscape, in a reasonable distance of activities and jobs thanks to its position in a global system of transportation.

Ängelholm produces some interesting reflections when reviewed on a regional scale. The mixed city-town typology also derives its character from the lush green pine and birch tree landscape within which the settlement is well embedded. One can spontaneously assume when arriving at the main train station, that this place is amongst nature and far from the daily hustleand-bustle of mega cities. Along with this, the city region also calls for a certain level of urban intervention so as to strengthen its identity. Following are some of the findings that I thought would be helpful for my design process. The first step to providing a solution for the area is the Train station. A square and plaza has been proposed for this area, so that there is an arrival point for the people to the city.

The barrier because of the railway have been tried to be reduced making the access to the forest and sea on the other side, more permeable. Functions have been integrated like the Naturum and Tourist Lodge which can act as crowd pullers for the region. Proposal for a Business Park promoting local entrepreneurship is provided along with a ‘craft village’, to promote learning of local wood and ceramic works. Providing direction to the city center by activating the urban landscape along river Ronne thus welcoming the people to Ängelholm.

Ängelholm’s city center, (Industrigatan District) is like a concrete desert that is surrounded by green fields. However, it can turn into a unifying force that combines green spaces. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve this by creating a pattern that sometimes breaks over a green belt. The excess of parking lots is also an advantage at this point. They make it possible to create more green structures and much more dense settlements in order to prevent the city’s spreading. Nevertheless, we should avoid creating more empty greenery. Rather than that, it would be more useful to bring the agricultural activities that already exist outside the city into the city and turn these areas into greenhouses to produce fresh food. In addition to providing green spaces and fresh food, greenhouses can also be considered as a learning area. They might work as gathering places for people who come from different social groups. Apart from all these, urban agriculture will contribute to the economic

growth of the city and reducing the ecological footprint with a motto; local producing local consuming. This urban agriculture activity in Ängelholm starts from an open market which is located across the train station. It welcomes everyone in the city and create a vibrant area with the green corridor to the residential areas up in the north. This green corridor will also turn into a focal point for the urban agricultural activities in Ängelholm with the greenhouses along it. In the future, it also seems to be possible to attract more people in the area, because changes always start with an idea of an individual and starts to affect others sometimes in a neighborhood scale, sometimes in global.

Regional concept: Connect three hiking routes in Skåne, then the site will be the end or the start of people’s travel. Local concept: In the context of the regional concept, there will be a great demands of bringing new settlments in to the site. And the function of the further development should consider the needs of tourists and citizens. However, the spaces near the long site really need to be organized in order to provide people a good experience. The rich content and the linear site are really similar to a thick but interesting novel, which can bring people into a new world. Strategy of READ THE FOREST: The story line in a novel can be divided into four parts: exposition, elaboration, climax, denouement. In the existing environment, the site has already had the exposition-tunnel, the climaxsand dunes and the denoument-bay.

Therefore, what it lacks is the elaboration. According to the previous phases, it is obvious that there are a lot of good potential in the site- forest, biodiversity, existing activities and landscape. So these element all can be the fantastic resources of riching the elaboration. So in the proposal, the elaboration are be unfolded through one introduction and five chapters. The observation tower in the tourist center offers people a place to have a bird view of the forest even the old city, which gives them an brief impression of the site. And the first chapters is the transition from the urban to the forest; the second one is forest wetland; the third chapter is diverse lifestyles in the forest, which introduce two types of new housing typologies into the forest; and the last one is called energetic forest, this area integrates diversed ourdoor and indoor activities, the large public lawn can accomodate the three flux of people from other hiking routes.
