Design Brief: 1 Brief 1: To quickly design a casing for wall mounted automatic water dispensing unit.

Water Situation in India

• Limited access to clean drinking water • No hygienic source of water • Bad quality of drinking water • Non uniform distribution of water • Ground water contamination • No Domestic supply of water

Research / Existing Products / Field Visits This quick research was carried out to understand Sarvajal and their business model and how the product will help the company to move forward towards its vision. The first initial prototype was already out in the fields to test the functionality of the product. But due to improper casing and vandalism in the slums where it was installed, it needed a makeover. So that it could be produced with IP 56 protection, in low cost and with good durability.

Concept Sketches Various concepts were made and finally one was selected considering the ease and time of manufacturing and easy usage/installation (avoiding special tooling to be made, thereby producing it in as low cost as possible)

Full Scale Mockup In order to understand the electronics and functionality of the product, a quick wooden mockup was made and several trials were carried out on it in order to check from maintenance point of view too.

These mockups show the placement & fitting of electronics and piping required in the product.

After the trials a final metal prototype was made before going for production.

3D Model & Interface After finalization of the prototype, 3D model was created and visualized using tools like Solidworks and Keyshot.

A simple UI was created for the user to take water. Graphics was created with Coral Draw and Photoshop.

Casing after manufacturing Final working prototype called Wall Mounted Unit (WMU) Working in various franchisees of Sarvajal in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Delhi. The device is electronically controlled and connected to a server to keep track of the quantity and quality of water dispensed to a particular user. User comes with a RFID card and shows in the scan area to take RO water at an affordable price of 30 Paise a Liter. Device runs 24X7. Refilling happens through another service.

Concept Sketches

A single unit dispenser was designed which runs on solar energy and can withstand the vandalism dispensing water 24X7.

Paper Mockup & 3D Model Quick Paper Mockups were made showing the concept and then the concept was taken to 3D visualization.

Manufacturing & Production 2D Drawings were generated for fabrication.

The whole process of making a working Water ATM was supervised with selected vendors.

Working Product in Field Installed in Saudha Ghevra Slum, Near Nangloi (New Delhi)

Final Product The product is installed in more than 30 Locations in Saudha Ghevra (Delhi Slum),

in NEWS The Sarvajal story with the Water ATM product has been published in various Local and National New Papers and has been showed by BBC and CNN News channels.

Drinking Water Dispenser for Schools

Design Brief To Design a Drinking water dispenser for Indian Schools and nearby societies around schools.

2

Research Area Drinking water dispensing facilities in different schools in India were studied to provide a solution for unhygienic water supply in schools

Delhi

School selected in two locations in India

On field research Water facilities in schools were observed and the problems were identified .

• Unhygienic drinking water and improper water dispensing system. • Uncertain water supply • Not enough water/ water taps in schools • Surrounding of the dispensing units not clean

Workshop with kids To Design a Drinking water dispenser for Slums of India, incorporating the technology developed by Sarvajal.

Drawing workshop with Riverside School kids to understand their experience and expectations from water facilities in their school.

System Model & Intervention Area

Research Summary

• Water Transportation by Vehicle is not feasible • Raw Water and Electricity is available in most of the schools • RO units and Taps don’t work because of lack of maintenance. • RO units’ working status not monitored • Dispensing Units not designed considering ergonomics of age variation. • No track of quality and quantity of water consumed • A lot of space is used for water facility in the schools and its not clean • Lot of money is spent by government for providing water • HighTDS and other contaminants in water • Children/many teachers thinks water cooler also purifies the water • Children want an automatic water dispenser

Design Brief To understand Indian cooking environment and design a cooking stove for small homes.

3

Indian way of cooking

We use variety of cooking methods and utensils to cook. These also vary depending on : Culture Region Belief Taste

Market & User Research To find out the products catering to the segment chosen for intervention, an intensive research was conducted through questionnaire, market survey, consumer insights and how products are being used today at homes.

Brands in the same category

Products in market

Research Findings & Key Points There is a acute need of a product which combines both the facility of Gas Stove and energy efficient Induction Cooking.

• User want an economical cooking technology • They are uncertain about energy used in electrical devices • What if electricity goes off ?? • Proper utilization of space • Unable to use “Kadai” on Induction Stove • Intuitive interface required • Quick cooking • One device that does a two things • Aesthetically better

Concept sketches Concept incorporating both the Induction and Gas stove features in a minimal way together saving kitchen space too.

Form simplification The form of the Albatross is simplified till it retains only its essence in the design

Mockup and material exploration

Due to the flexibility required for the concept, various materials were explored for making the prototype. The final suggested material was Silicone with soft metal insert which will maintain the shape as it is.

Design Brief Create a design that can bring/push the items to the front. Imagine if you were to take an item or two out of the shelf in your favorite store how it could look for the next customer. Now imagine the 5000 such shelves you have to fix and get the items to the front. If you had an opportunity to automate this – what are your thoughts? The end result has to be that all the shelves look full.

My Interpretation To design a product/system/strategy to bring/push the product in the front on the shelf in the store.

Study of Retail Stores & their display system

Quick survey of the nearby retail stores in Electronics City (Bangalore)

Key Issues • The products need to be manually shifted or filled, so require large labor force • The shelf does not looks uniform and filled, when products are taken out by consumers, thereby redusing customer experience • Lower shelf has poor visibility of product even if one pack is out • Visibility of the product reduces thereby reducing the chances of sales • It is hard to design one solution which cater to all variety of products in the store

Existing products in the market

Ideation

Design Features Long Life / Durable / Rugged The product will be used repeatdly, so it is expected to have the above features.

Minimal Design / Subdude The main purpose is to increase sales, so the design should not overrule the Product to be sold by it, therefore it should be in background doing its function.

Automatic / Smart System

Automatization will ease the labor and if done smartly will give us data through which we can make future predictions of sales.

Minimum use of power or no power use Design should not to increase the expenses of stores so either should not use electricity or if required then to a minimum.

Silent Solution should be silent as not to make a diffrence in the user experience.

Concepts 1) Push You 2) Recoiled 3) Conveyor 4) Smart Motion 5) Rotating Balls 6) UPLIFT 7) RELOAD

Concept 4

The Hi-Tech and Futuristic (This also helps in day to day product sales analysis)

Rotating Balls Bearing balls making the surface frictionless.

Concept 5

UPLIFT For small volume objects like soaps/boxes/packets/chocolates/ small pulses packets etc

Principle : Equilibrium maintained between the weight of the product and the spring tension.

1) Standalone product 2) Diffrent shapes can be explored

Concept 6

RELOAD

Concept 7

For cylindrical objects that can roll

Product motion direction

Can be used in the current shelves or standalone.

Selection criteria • Feasibility • Simplicity • Usablity in current system • User experience • Applicability • Number of diffrent product can be used
