Panama Rising ©Susan Campbell
Forging an Exciting Future
I
t was my first trip to Panama, and though I’d done my homework, I wasn’t prepared for the massive sprawl of skyscrapers cresting the coast as we flew in. And later, the stunning view from my 44th floor balcony at Hard Rock Panama Megapolis hotel cemented my impression that this was indeed a city on the rise. Though the old district (Casco Viejo) is still intact as a UNESCO world heritage site, and certainly worth a tour through the ancient alleyways on foot, it has been wrapped in a modern causeway for easier access and is undergoing a massive rejuvenation as well. The famous canal is also expanding. The excitement about the construction of a new secondary channel alongside the old one to accommodate larger megaships was obvious as I toured the site with their staff. In fact, everywhere I went I felt a distinct energy of anticipation in the air. It seems as if now Panama has found its own national identity since the U.S. gave the canal zone back to its people, and it is poised for a brilliant future.
I didn’t get to the lush nature areas close by, but I hear that the birding opportunities are exceptional, and this is where the Smithsonian does its annual world bird count. But I did the Frank Gehry-designed Bio Museum. Though not yet finished, when it is it will be another brilliant feather in this city’s cap. It celebrates the unique biodiversity of the region with exceptional interactive exhibits. And as far as after-dark diversions, this city rarely sleeps. There is always music in the streets in the old quarter, there are firstrate casinos in the new section, and scads of nightlife, trendy eateries and great shopping. My visit was short, but long enough to get a real feel for the metropolis and meet some friendly and fun-loving locals, like my tour guide extraordinaire Violeta Won. I can’t wait to return and explore some more as this city they call the crossroads of the Americas seems definitely destined to evolve further into an extremely vibrant and inviting tourist destination. continues on page XX
