Panama’s first golf course dates back to 1918. While walking their horses, some US navy officials, homesick for their favorite pastime, spotted an area they thought would make an ideal course. The group, later known as the “16 apostles of golf”, built their field of dreams, the Club de Golf Panama, a course which today hosts world-class events like the Panama Movistar Championships. Since the year 2000, close to a dozen new courses have been completed or are under development. In fact, the sport’s meteoric rise saw clubs scrambling to provide pros to teach the game to executives eager to prove that more deals are made on the golf course than in the boardroom. With the country’s perfect climate, vast range of scenery and increasing popularity as a tourism and retirement destination, it’s no wonder that there are now so many exceptional golf courses here. In fact, Panama has the only seaside courses in all of Central America! Award-winning architects and designers at the top of their game have all had a hand in creating Panama’s golf courses: Jeff Meyers, Randall Thompson, Tom and George Fazio, Perry Dye, Ron Garl and J. Michael Poellot are just a few. Their challenges were as unique as Panama’s diverse climate and geography. Special considerations such as optimum drainage systems and respecting fragile eco-systems were among them. 왘

La primera cancha de golf de Panamá data de 1918. Mientras paseaban sus caballos, unos oficiales de la marina de Estados Unidos que añoraban su pasatiempo favorito divisaron un área que les pareció ideal para el golf. El grupo, más tarde conocido como los “dieciséis apóstoles del golf”, construyó la cancha de sus sueños, el Club de Golf de Panamá, en el que aún hoy se realizan eventos de clase mundial como los Torneos Movistar Panamá. Desde el año 2000, se han terminado o se están construyendo cerca de una docena de nuevos campos de golf. De hecho, el crecimiento meteórico del deporte puso a los clubes en una carrera loca por encontrar profesionales que enseñaran el juego a los ejecutivos deseosos de demostrar que se cierran más negocios en la cancha que en las salas de conferencia. Con el clima perfecto del país, su gran variedad de paisajes y su creciente popularidad como destino de turistas y jubilados, no es raro que existan ahora tantas canchas de golf de nivel internacional. En realidad, Panamá tiene los únicos céspedes costeros de toda Centroamérica.
