I

didn’t figure I’d enjoy a cruise since I prefer to thoroughly explore a destination and I’m not a big fan of large groups. But I decided to try one anyway since it traveled to some islands I wanted to preview for future trips. Our ship was the Eurodam, a mid-size vessel that focuses more on small groups than on being a massive floating party palace. And the fact that there was a separate adult-only pool, a luxe pampering spa, and many upscale guest enrichment programs like cooking classes, wine-tastings and art auctions told me that they were out to attract mature, well-seasoned travelers, not spring-breakers. Our stateroom was spacious and beautifully appointed with a very large deck looking out onto the wake. That veranda became our favourite sanctuary for room service breakfast and for sunbathing in privacy. As I’d heard, there is never any dearth of food on a cruise and this one was no exception. We tended to avoid the buffet in favour of a la carte dining, but we were never disappointed wherever we went. And the service overall in every respect was above and beyond. The Eurodam’s staff is absolutely excellent. For entertainment, there were theatre revues and a small casino, but this was no Vegas-style showboat. The disco was seldom populated at all. If you’re seeking late night revelry, this isn’t the cruise for you. But in all, we really enjoyed our journey. And though I’m no cruise expert yet, I do have some advice for the uninitiated. First, pay the

extra for a veranda. I can’t conceive of cruising without one. Second, pay extra occasionally for the specialty dining rooms. We thoroughly enjoyed their Night at Le Cirque themed event at the Pinnacle Grill. Third, pack for both tropical and cool climates. The constant interior air conditioning keeps it surprising cool, sometimes even frigid! I wish I’d packed warmer wear than cocktail dresses for dinners. Also, choose an itinerary that offers unique excursions to keep it interesting. Snorkeling with stingrays, zip-lining a rainforest or exploring ancient ruins will greatly enrich even the best onboard experience. Visit www.hollandamerica.com . SUSAN CAMPBELL
