TOP TRENDS Summer 2013

When we first started planning this issue of “Your Home” we asked some of our customers what they liked about this publication, and what they would like to see in future issues. Most people said they loved the ideas and inspiration they provide, as well as the practical hints and advice in the ask the expert. But most of you said that these act as a great “prompt” for getting around to those never-ending home decor projects. The added incentive of fantastic discounts off fabrics with curtain making or upholstery orders were also an added bonus. This got us to thinking that maybe we should offer our lovely er Sue Fost customers an extra helping hand all year round. After all, you want to do your projects when it suits you, not just at the times dictated by our sale periods. So I am delighted to announce that we have decided to run a privilege scheme, which will give members discounted fabrics with curtain making and upholstery orders - all year round! See the back page of this publication for more details or, better still, pop in for a cuppa and have a chat about becoming a member of ry

If you’re looking for inspiration but don’t know where to start, then here’s a useful guide to some of the key interior trends for 2013. Happy decorating! Retro botanicals - One of the key design trends in 2013 is plant inspired patterns with roots in the 1950's. With its stylised representation of nature and florals this trend is definitely a fun and colorful way to add accent pattern into a home. The simple addition of cushion covers or curtains with a retro botanical print can change theofwhole feel of a room. image courtesy Manuel Canovas Nature - Mixing natural elements into your decor blends simplicity and rusticity. Including cork, stone, and wood surfaces adds an earthy, organic look to the modern home. Re-upholster a chair or bench cushion in textured linen and replace metal hardware with stone or wooden knobs and pulls. Bamboo furnishings lend an eco-friendly air, and wooden floors are a classy addition to any home. All that glitters - Metallic accents are a major interior design trend for 2013. Use gold, bronze, or silver paint, picture frames, tableware and vases. For a more daring feature, consider replacing your cushions with gold, bronze, or silver fabric, or add a feature wall of metallic beaded wallpaper.

Folklore - Woodland creatures and mythical beasts encapsulate this unusual trend which is perfect for a statement living or dining room scheme. For a more subtle folk theme use fabrics with printed or embroidered graphic motifs and patchwork.

Architectural wallpapers - Modern architectural wallpaper designs are one of the most popular interior design trends for 2013 and turn even the most non-descript wall into a striking feature. Digital printing creates modern wallpaper designs that look like various decorating materials - fabric, wood, brick, natural stone, cement or metal, and imitate wall decoration techniques with an amazing accuracy. Neutrals with a pop of colour - We are all familiar with the concept of using an accent colour within a scheme, but update the concept by using a very neutral base of white and grey tones then using a vibrant colour on small accessories and furnishings which really stands out. The brighter the colour, the better the “pop”! Modern tribal - Use earthy tones and graphic prints on furniture, floor rugs and wall hangings. Animal skin imitations are all the rage, ranging from zebra print linens to leopard print velvet. But don't overdo the animal print, one or two key pieces are enough. Use shutters or wooden venetian blinds at the windows, softened with sheer linen dress curtains, and faux fur cushions to add a touch of luxury. Birds of a feather - Colorful feather prints are all the rage, and can be used to spruce up walls, cushions, lamp shades and ornaments. Peacock feathers are especially luxurious and add a glamorous twist of colour.

Ask the expert...

or pinch pleat - which is better?

Ultimately the curtain heading you choose is a matter of personal preference - some offer a more formal look than others and are better in a sitting or dining room, whilst others have an informal look, better suited to bedrooms and family rooms. Pinch pleat curtains (with either double or triple pleats) have the dressed pleats stitched in them which means they stack back neatly and stay dressed in their folds better. They have a more traditional feel and generally require more fabric than pencil pleats, although double pinch pleats require less fabric than triple pinch. Pencil pleat curtains, which use regis tape to create a gathered heading, are trickier to keep neatly dressed, but have the benefit of being adaptable to different window widths by letting out or pulling up the curtain heading tape. Other headings to consider are eyelet heading which dresses well, and has a more contemporary look; cottage heading which looks lovely on short curtains in a country style bedroom; and goblet heading which is suited to long, interlined curtains in opulent formal settings. our favourite ...New fabric and wallpaper collections Manuel Canovas takes us on an exotic journey for 2013. Extraordinary influences from the Far East, Northern India and the French Caribbean come through in the vibrancy of the new collection. The 2013 Collection marks 50 years of exquisite design from the house of Manuel Canovas. In celebration, the studio has re-imagined two outstanding patterns from its archive, entitled ‘Serendip’ and ‘Jamaïca’. ‘Serendip’ was first developed from two ancient Chinese silk prints, while ‘Jamaïca’ was based on French West Indian paintings dating from the 18th century. Originally screen-printed, both fabrics are now being digitally printed in updated colours for 2013. The effect reveals the collection’s remarkable detail with a clarity and presence that brings these contemporary designs firmly into the 21st century. Prices start at £48 per metre.

Villa Nova’s new Mariken collection is a vivid collection inspired by nature in zingy, fresh colour groups. This lively collection features hand drawn wild flowers, meadow grasses and graphic ginkgo leaves. Scion’s latest collection, Wabi Sabi is a striking and eclectic collection of prints, weaves and wallcoverings, which adhere to the Scion principles of cuttingedge, accessibly priced and forward looking. The collection celebrates the beauty of imperfection, encapsulating the spirit of age-old hand crafted techniques such as blockprinting, shibori, batik and ikat in a stunning array of moodenhancing shades. Prices start at £18 per metre.
