Once again we’ve been busy moving house at Sue Foster Interiors - Last October we opened our gorgeous new showroom at 51 High Street, then in February this year we moved our workroom and operations to create a new “Head Office” at Emsworth Marina. As a keen sailor, the fact that I can gaze out of my office window at Emsworth Harbour and watch the boats coming and going is entirely coincidental! But I have to admit to the occasional drop in productivity on perfect sailing days! Our new workroom has enabled us to not only provide a nicer working environment for our talented curtain makers (or little elves as they are affectionately known!), but it also means that we are able to take on larger jobs that we would have struggled with in our old workroom. Our team is coping well with the “split” locations and the showroom team are now well settled into their new home at 51 High Street. Lots of people have been kind enough to say how much easier it is for them to browse the fabrics, as well as complimenting us on some inspirational window displays. We have also re-vamped our website to go along with our new showroom layout where you can browse our latest newsletters, including tips and new collections, and see photos of our latest projects and creations. Why not take a look yourself at www.suefoster.co.uk. Our facebook page also has tons of ideas, tips and information for anyone planning an interiors project, however big or small. Why not “Like” us and get all the latest news, tips and offers as they happen. Find us at facebook.com/suefosterinteriors

Get the look Colonial Style It

has often been quoted that in its heyday the Sun never set on the British Empire. Of course, those days are long gone, but the British Empire has left a legacy as far reaching as its former colonies.

The British colonists created a style of architecture and décor that was as eclectic and practical as they themselves were. Of course, we don't all live in a beach-side villa in the Caribbean or a mountain retreat in India, but here are a few tips as to how to get the colonial look in your home, wherever you live. British colonials typically took with them heavy wooden furniture and added lighter local pieces. Use dark wooden furniture, preferably Victorian in style, for a couple of key pieces, and if you have wooden floorboards stain them a dark mahogany colour for an authentic look. Mix this with a couple of rustic pieces made from Bamboo or cane. Victorian travellers would take with them “campaign” furniture which was light, folding and portable. Mix in a couple of pieces like a folding tray table and canvas chair. Travelling trunks also make great coffee tables. Select a few pieces which reflect the Victorian love of collecting. You don't need to go so far as a stuffed parrot in a case, but selectively use animal print, unusual shells and exotic plants to re-create the mood.

In order to cope with the heat, colonial settlers would use light colours to reflect the sun. For an authentic look, use crisp white paint on the walls and ceilings, and hang floaty white voiles around beds and at the windows. If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings, install a vintage ceiling fan to give a cooling breeze. In addition to voiles at the windows, use shutters or wide wooden Venetian blinds which allow the light into the room, but shade the sun. Fabrics should be natural cotton or linen to reflect what was available locally. Keep them fairly rustic and simple in neutral tones, or go wild with exotic fern leaf or a sub tropical plant design. A leather chair or chesterfield sofa in rich brown would also add a touch of Victorian luxury.

I live on a busy street in town and need something to give me privacy at my sitting room window. I don’t like net curtains and still want the light to come into the room. What would you recommend that would give me privacy and light but still look stylish?

Ask the expert...

It depends on how high and deep your windows are, but you could consider using shutters which give privacy and can be adjusted according to the light requirement. Shutters can be installed on the whole window, or only the lower half of the window enabling the upper window to let in the light un-obscured. Another option is a two-tier efect where the top shutters can be opened independently of the bottom ones. Alternatively, you could opt for white wooden Venetian blinds at the window for a shutter “effect”. The white wood will help to reflect the light into the room. We have a wonderful range of reasonably priced shutters and wooden Venetian blinds to suit most windows, even bi-folding doors and shaped windows. Send us a photo or pop in to see us and we will happily help you out with which would be the best option for your window.

our favourite ...New fabric and wallpaper collections SPORTING LIFE BY LINWOOD Linwood are passionate about maintaining a classic English style, while introducing contemporary designs and innovative modern techniques. Their latest collection depicts quintessential English pastimes and pursuits from a time before cricket helmets and ‘Hawkeye’. “Sporting Life” mixes luxurious printed velvets, vintage linen Kilim prints with jacquards weaves, wools, stripes and co-ordinating wallpapers. Tally Ho!

EMMA BRIDGEWATER PRINTS BY SANDERSON Drawn primarily from existing Emma Bridgewater patterns, this new range of fabrics and wallpapers are a perfect reflection of the warm-hearted, cheerfully informal style that’s made Emma Bridgewater pottery a favourite in British kitchens for nearly 30 years. The collection captures the hand crafted essence of the pottery and print mark of the sponge ware. The colour palette takes its inspiration from the original colours of the ceramic range. In addition to this, further colourways have been developed for all rooms in the home. All fabrics are suitable for curtains and upholstery and are printed on natural unbleached cotton; chosen to reflect the natural colour of the earthenware clay used in the pottery and are complemented by Emma Bridgewater wallpapers.

JARDIN BOHEME BY HARLEQUIN The Harlequin Studio has embraced a number of diverse influences to produce an effortlessly engaging and eclectic signature collection, Jardin Bohème. The collection bears the distinctive Harlequin handwriting: displaying an ‘ad hoc’ chic, it harnesses a riot of pattern, colour and printing techniques to create a gloriously vibrant, yet subtly harmonious, whole.

I felt welcomed and listened to in the showroom. The variety of fabrics/trimmings/finishes was amazing and the service was excellent. The quality of the finished curtains and blinds are fantastic. I am so pleased and would like to say a big thank you to all the staff from the showroom to the sewing room to admin to the fitting. Thank you all very much! Mrs S.
