INTRODUCTION: MINISTRY OF DESIGN

CHIA SUE HWA / 0317920 INTERNSHIP REPORT ARC 2615, ARC2613 & ARC2622

INTRODUCTION:t COMPANY PROFILE Ministry of Design was founded by Colin Seah to Question, Disturb & Redefine the spaces, forms & experiences that surround us and give meaning to our world. An integrated spatial-design practice, MOD’s explorations are created amidst a democratic ‘studio-like’ atmosphere and progress seamlessly between form, site, object and space. MOD loves to question where the inherent potential in contemporary design lies, and then to disturb the ways they are created or perceived – redefining the world around us in relevant and innovative ways, project by project. To us, this is real change, not change for the sake of novelty. Fortified with these aspirations, MOD begins each distinct project anew by seeking to do 2 things – to draw deeply from the context surrounding each project, but also to dream freely so that we might transcend mere reality and convention. Each MOD project endeavours to be delightfully surprising but yet relevant, distinctly local but still globally appealing. Headquartered in Singapore and with offices in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur, MOD was declared a “Rising Star of Architecture” by the Monocle Singapore Survey 2010 and “Designer of the Year” by the International Design Awards, USA 2010. MOD’s recent portfolio includes Vanke Qingdao Plaza, Ascendas Guangzhou Knowledge City, award-winning Vanke Triple V Gallery & UOL Edge Gallery (World Architecture Festival 2012), Tangs Flagship Store and Macalister Mansion hotel (Best Luxury Hotel at HDF Luxurious Asia Awards 2013 & Best Small Hotel at Asia Pacific Property Awards 2013). Earlier works include the Barcode Office, BBH Office, Zig Zag House, Sho-U Restaurant Leo Burnett Office, SOHO China Sanlitun condominium, The Mark Business Park, New Majestic Hotel & The Saporiti Italia Luxury Tower.

SERVICES At MOD, we provide our clients a service that transcends mere design skills or technical prowess. We prefer to start far upstream by employing design thinking that is both strategic and conceptual, avoiding the immediate impulse for groundless downstream solutions. With each project, our aim is to establish a relevant design “north star” - a central notion and idea potent enough to guide us definitively through the entire design process. This upstream approach translates into a wide variety of possible downstream design solutions and media — be it architecture or product design, graphics or interior design, even the weaving of diverse disciplines into a single project. As a result, our work is holistic as well as bespoke. We call this entire process North Star Design — North star design 1. Strategy 2. Graphic 3. Product 4. Interior 5. Architecture 6. Landscape 7. DIRECTORS Colin Seah founded MOD and is the Director of Design. As MOD’s original design junkie, Colin is a licensed Architect but really an artist at heart. He spends his time presenting MOD to the world by directing our entire body of design work and also through a regular line up of speaking engagements. Joy Chan Seah is the Director of Business Development. Formerly working for a consulting firm, Joy now uses her corporate business background to anchor MOD, keeping our chaotic design universe in check with her spreadsheets and PR kits. David Tan is the Director of Projects. He may be the newest addition to this trio, but David has sown his “design oats” in a number of internationally renowned architectural practices and seen through a variety of complex projects the world over. He now oversees MOD’s project development and implementation, while managing the office in MODKL.

LOCATION Address: Ministry of Design Kuala Lumpur, A-33A-5, Menara UOA, Bangsar, Jalan Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. As a prominent melting pot of new artists and historical culture in Kuala Lumpur, Bangsar has fostered many home-grown brands that now lead the creative direction of the small city. Several cafes, art, furniture and architecture studios that are tucked all around town create an atmosphere brimming with fresh inspiration and new ideas. The newly-built PAM building is also within walking distance. This strategic location ensures that the next event or public talk is never too far away for the team here at MOD.

OFFICE SPACE MODKL is an architecture firm located in the heart of Bangsar. Looking down over the view of the city from the tall tower of Menara UOA, the office is a communal studio space that encourages discussions and conversations directly over one’s work station. With large windows on one end, plenty of natural daylight ensures the room is brightly lit every day. Featuring stark white furniture with black accents, the studio makes for a clean canvas to inspire innovation and creativity. Besides the individual work tables, other designated areas include the Breakout Space (a foyer / discussion area with clients and contractors), the Pentagon (a theatre-like, sound-insulated room with equipment for con-call meetings), Round Table Space (common tables for group discussions), a small library (for materials and references) and lastly, a pantry.

OVERVIEW OF INTERNSHIP

CHIA SUE HWA / 0317920 INTERNSHIP REPORT ARC 2615, ARC2613 & ARC2622

OVERVIEW OF INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE MODKL is currently home to 8 staff in total, including director David Tan. As part of the small Architectural Design Team, I get the opportunity to participate in many procedures and productions, such as team discussions, 3D modelling, CAD drawing, presentation compilation, client and consultant meetings and site visits. MODKL also communicates on a daily basis with MODSG via chat, Skype and email to apportion our workload and synchronize productions. CONTRACT DETAILS Semester 4.5 is an 8-9 weeks internship course that is compulsory for the Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree studies. However, I am to continue at MOD for an additional 2 weeks after completing the required number of weeks set by the University. Reason being, MOD’s minimum working period for interns is 3 months. I have started working as an intern at MODKL since 3rd January and my contract ends officially on 24th March. Thus, the additional weeks of work will contribute to my personal growth and work experience. Our official working hours is 8.30am-6.30pm on Mondays to Thursdays, but as MOD believes in long weekends, working hours end at 3.30pm on Fridays. However, overtime happens frequently and especially so when a deadline or presentation is around the corner. My colleagues and I have worked past 9pm on a few occasions. WEEKLY OVERVIEW The summary of progress throughout my internship is noted below. Detailed working hours are recorded in the attached Log Sheets. Note: Relase of drawings and information of any kind relating to the design proposal of TA Global Nova Square is strictly confidential. Nova Square has been the main project of MODKL for most of my internship period there. Being the first everhigh-density development that I am involved in, it is exciting to be able to observe how architecture transforms into reality, from paper to possibilities. MODKL and MODSG have been working together to prepare presentation material for each Concept submission since December 2016. MODKL is in charge of all architectural plan drawings, while MODSG is focused on exploring facade options for the development. Even though we work on seperate ends, each team would send updates regularly informing their progress. This way, each team exchanges comments and opinions to further CHIA SUE HWA / 0317920 INTERNSHIP REPORT ARC 2615, ARC2613 & ARC2622

improve each day’s work. In the office, David spends his time coordinating both teams, while Karen and Naadiya focus on ground floor plans, typical floor plans etc. I would then receive these drawings for post-production to compile into presentation slides in Adobe Indesign. This includes colouring the drawings to be more visually understandable. Also, I make sure all drawings are plotted in the same scale and position on each page, accompanied with relevant information to ease presentation flow. Besides this, I create diagrams using Sketchup and Adobe Photoshop to explain concepts. I have also created diagrammatic section drawings that explain the programme of the development. My main priority is to assist Karen and Naadiya in drawing plans whenever they need a hand. For example, I help to adjust the 3D Sketchup model when Naadiya needs to tally the development data figures to meet the requirements set by the client. Working on Nova Square has always been a challenge because of time contraints to meet deadlines and submissions. Working past office hours have become increasingly normal to us. The architectural development of this project also needs to be explored based on regular input from M&E and C&S consultants on the best systems, sizing requirements and authority matters. This inevitably means improving and updating drawings constantly. Regular CCM (client-consultant meetings) are held to make sure progress from each authority is moving according to timeline. Having been to 2 CCMs, I have observed the relationship between each party when working hand in hand to realise a development. This determines how the project is carried forward. Equal input in a timely manner from each consultant is vital to ensure progress. I have also realised the power of the architect as only he holds the key idea and backbone of the development, which is the spatial planning and aesthetic design. Consultants are the ones that turn the idea into complete reality. Also, I have learnt that one’s ability to present ideas and accept criticisms comfortably is a valuable skill to learn. After each meeting, I assist in writing the minutes that will be passed for record purposes to all consultants. Then, our team holds group discussions to digest updates and to apportion workload for the day.

MODKL and MODSG worked on this project for a short 2 weeks. As the development is in Guangzhou, MODBJ liaised with the client to pass the brief and other necessaty documents to us. The Vanke South Station is a large mixed-development consisting of several components such as residential towers, office space, retail spaces, high streets, public parks, interactive and learning hub. Although currently undergoing construction, the client is keen to have the previously proposed facade (done by another firm) for the residential towers re-designed. Also, the client MOD to propose a retail design on the ground floor. Due to this circumstance, I had the opportunity to participate in a MOD Design Charade. Charades are rare because they happen only when a new project demands fresh ideas from around he table. The whole week is CHIA SUE HWA / 0317920 INTERNSHIP REPORT ARC 2615, ARC2613 & ARC2622

dedicated to an individual design proposal, followed immediately by a group proposal. The first 2 days, each architectural team member from MODKL and MODSG had to develop a retail plan and facade explorations to be presented on the 3rd day. Most of us presented our ideas through sketches, 3D models, 2D drawings, renders and precedent images. As for me, I used 3D Sketchup and Photoshop to create photomontage renders, and simple diagrams to present my idea on the retail space (see appendix). It was a hectic 2 days, but I learnt the importance of developing ideas fast, and to make quick decisions when time is short. The presentation from MODKL was carried out through skype and screenhero - all 4 of us, David, Karen, Naadiya and myself presented. Over in MODSG, Colin reviewed everyone’s proposals and gave comments and new ideas on how to bring forward these design intentions for the group charade. He complimented the presentation style of my renders and also the essence of my retail planning that aims to draw crowds in from corners of the development instead of straight sides due to human traffic from busy road junctions, By the end of the week, MODKL and MODSG presented a orthogonal and organic option of the facade respectively. MODSG was in charge of compiling the final presentation slides for the client, and to also develop the retail on the ground floor MODKL focused on preparing 3 options rendered in 3 different materials (see appendix) for different effects. For this part of the project, Karen prepared an additonal 3D Sketchup of the ground floor while Naadiya and I improved our own orthogonal facade options. I took contextusl reference from the Chinese lattice screens, and created a purer form with dynamic arrangement for the facades. At the end of the week, MODSG compiled our options and the presentation material was passed to the client. That marked the end of our role on Vanke South Station.

This project only lasted for 2 weeks. Unlike Vanke, GKC was previously designed by MOD. The client requested to make minor changes to the facade of the development. In 2 weeks, Karen, Naaiya and I worked together to apportion window elements to create a randomised facade in the form of 2D elevations and a 3D Sketchup model. The frames of the windoes are to be flushed and sunken randmly to create a dynamic effect (see appendix).

CONCLUSION

CHIA SUE HWA / 0317920 INTERNSHIP REPORT ARC 2615, ARC2613 & ARC2622

From having zero working experience to completing my internship with a ambitious and design-savvy architecture firm is the experience of a lifetime. I really appreciate my mentors, David, Karen and Naadiya for patiently guiding me through the unfamilar procedures at the beginning of my course. Over the 3 months, many tasks had made me cross my comfort zone to acquire new skills even though they may be uncomfortable at first. I am grateful for the experiences and people I have had the opportunity to work with.
