The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise lending a helping hand at the Muslim Welfare Centre for Needy Women and Children. Lots of fun and laughs working together to apply a fresh coat of paint throughout this 45-bed emergency shelter. This Centre provides a culturally-sensitive, safe haven for women and children in need, with a primary focus on those who are homeless. Since 1996, the Muslim Welfare Home has helped over 11,000 women and their children find hope.

Not speaking the same language was not a barrier in developing this friendship between Rotarian Barry Mount and a lovely family in a remote village in Laos. Kindness, curiosity, and a heartfelt smile was all that was needed. This year a group from the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise took a life-changing trip to Laos in support of Adopt a Village in Laos. The Rotarians helped to distributed family water filters in rural Laos - the most heavily bombed country per capita, in the world. While rich in culture and tradition, this area is severely lacking in education, healthcare, and safe hygiene practices. Are you looking to connect with new and interesting people both locally and from around the world? Join us at one of our breakfast meetings held every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. at the Royal Oak South, Whitby (617 Victoria St W). 3

The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise has been working in the Dominican Republic since a hurricane devastated the island in September 1998. The first trip to the town of Consuelo in October 1998 was by two Rotarians, Blair Buchanan and Bob Jarvest, together with chainsaws and generators. 20 years later, Bob is know as “Sr. Roberto” in the Dominician as he continues his dedicated efforts every year with no signs of stopping. Whitby Sunrise Rotarians venture to the D.R. every spring to assist Bob in helping others with many projects in Consuelo and the bateys (small communities) located in the sugar cane fields which surround Consuelo. From the installation of solar lights, to pouring cement floors in houses with nothing but dirt, to bringing food to those who have virtually nothing—this work has brought a tremendous positive change to the lives of so many. Our international projects are inspired by great Rotarians who see a need and fill it with passion, hard work, and a drive to help those in true need. Find out how YOU can enhance the lives of others in both our local community and around the world. Contact us—we’d love to tell you more about it. RotaryWhitbySunrise.com

Just two drops of vaccine into a child’s mouth, repeated three times, protects that child for life. Whitby Sunrise Rotarian, Peter Gorham went on a mission to India to help end polio. The effort to eradicate this crippling disease is one of the most astonishing public health initiatives in the history of the world with Rotary contributing more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Due to this incredible effort, just 37 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. However, the polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict, and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks. 5

Now is our chance to change the world—to make sure no child is ever disabled by polio again. Join in. Speak out. Donate. Be part of history. Talk to us about ending polio now. With your help, we can make it happen!

Whitby Sunrise Rotarians, Jane, Joyce, and Janet worked with Habitat for Humanity combating unsafe and unaffordable housing in our community. Women Build is part of a global movement that brings women together in a shared mission to help families in need of a decent place to call home. By bringing women together to swing hammers and fundraise, Women Build promotes empowerment, solidarity, learning, and city pride. Since 2009, Habitat for Humanity GTA Women Build events have rallied over 5,000 women to raise more than $4.5 million, and help build 85 homes.

For the last seven years in early July, the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise puts on a huge outdoor family fun event—Whitby Ribfest! Over 50,000 people attend each year and they start their visit with a warm welcome from one of our greeters like Rotarian Tom Fitzsimmons. Tom’s friendly hello ensures our guests’ day gets off to a great start! Here’s Tom with a lovely family who were teaching their little guy about the value of giving by helping him make a donation. These funds, and all proceeds from Whitby Ribfest, go directly to projects of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise. With your help, the club has given large donations to such worthwhile causes such as Grandview Children’s Centre, Hearth Place Cancer Centre, Wounded Warriors, and so many others.

This past winter, Rotarians from the Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club traveled to Laos to distribute family water filters in rural Laos in connection with Adopt a Village in Laos. Each family in this rural village, along with 34 other villages, now has a water filter. Over 20,000 people now receive clean water! With the elimination of water borne bacteria, each village has progressed from 100% of the residents suffering from diarrhea, to zero. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. We are people of action. Each of us CAN make a difference!

Polio can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. It is incurable, but completely vaccine-preventable. Just two drops of vaccine into a child’s mouth, repeated three times, protects that child for life. More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotary Members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to reach people in areas isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support. Pictured here: Whitby Sunrise Rotarian Steve Rutledge working to end polio and helping to give a child a chance at a prosperous future. 11

On the second Thursday of every month, Whitby Sunrise Rotarians volunteer at St. Vincent Pallotti’s Kitchen. The crew consists of Rotarians, spouses, family, friends, and colleagues who come together with one common goal—to create a healthy, tasty meal for members of our community who are in need. Uniting individuals and communities, we are Rotary—we are People of Action.

12

PEOPLE OF ACTION—Whitby Sunrise Rotarian Bob “Roberto” Jarvis is heading south to Consuelo, Dominican Republic. He will be joined by a number of Rotarians, along with his lovely wife Margaret, over the coming weeks. This year’s projects include the distribution of 20 water filters, 45 solar lighting systems, the construction of 5 latrines and 6 concrete floors for the houses of folks that live in the sugar cane fields. Margaret will be distributing over 200 sanitary kits for young women and 200 or more bags of food to those in need.

Benefits of Rotary

14

Rotary is a service club that makes a difference as part of the world’s largest family of givers. Rotarians have many opportunities to assist in a wide variety of local, national, and international humanitarian causes that touch the lives of so many people in need. Your potential to do good is far greater as a Rotarian with the combined expertise, skills, and resources of more than 1.2 million Rotarians around the world working together for positive change. Pictured here: the Rotary Whitby Sunrise Club lending a helping hand at St. Vincent Pallotti’s Kitchen.

Membership in Rotary fulfills the basic human need of friendship. In fact, it was one of the primary reasons Paul Harris started Rotary in 1905. We create lifelong friendships in our local and international communities. The relationships created in Rotary are with a network of local and international leaders who are considered our equals and peers. The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise has a wide range fellowship, or just for fun events. We ride bikes, go for hikes, go to the movies, travel the world, and so much more. We have lots of laughs and wonderful lasting friendships form and are always treasured. Come and see what all the fun’s about! 16

Rotary is a network of business professionals and community leaders who have a culture of high level integrity and purpose. Our members are exposed to people every week, in a vast range of vocations, who can provide assistance to our business and professional development. Although we are not a business networking organization, our members connect to the leaders in their local community. By this association, our members not only enhance their business, they learn from and identify with the leaders in their community.

17

Rotary takes ordinary individuals and puts them into extraordinary circumstances. Every week, you are exposed to new thoughts, new professions, and new opportunities to learn resulting in a great breadth of highly developed social skills of our membership. A key part of Rotary is its internationalism, which enables our members to broaden their international scope, living, and expression. Simply stated, membership in Rotary helps to make our members better—better individuals, community leaders, internationalists, and humanitarians.

18

There’s a lot of fun that comes along with being a Whitby Sunrise Rotarian. We have many varied social events throughout the year for fun and camaraderie—dinner parties, bike rides, movie days, hiking trips, and so much more including our annual pond broom ball games (pictured here). Our club meetings and other events are filled with fellowship, humour, and entertainment. We are a friendly, welcoming and engaging group. Come see what all the fun’s about! We meet at 7:00am every Wednesday morning at the Royal Oak - Whitby Shores

6 Areas of Focus

20

Rotary International is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world. The Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club has many ongoing projects that support these initiatives. Visit rotarywhitbysunrise.com to find out more.

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. One of Rotary’s goals is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

22

We carry out service projects that enhance economic and community development and create opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.

23

We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases like polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. We improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in developing areas.

24

We support local solutions to bring clean water, sanitation and hygiene to more people every day. We don’t just build wells and walk away. We share our expertise with community leaders and educators to make sure our projects succeed long-term. A great example of this is our partnership with Adopt a Village in Laos headed up by Whitby Sunrise Rotarian Steve Rutledge.

25

Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.

26

Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.
