There is something magical The original idea was to go back to the good old times when St. Moritz was a special place that inspired outstanding people to make a special effort for a better world. The St. Moritz Award is now the result of months of hard work and months of following a vision to create a platform to honor outstanding people for their work in the area of charity and humanitarian aid. There is something magical that transforms people who spend time in St. Moritz. Everything happens naturally and spontaneously, and what matters is no longer appearance but being. Meeting in special places creates occasions that focus on aspects of excellence, highlighting their prominent features. There is a magical thread which links extraordi-

nary lives, distinguished careers and international success with a desire and a need to engage with social issues. The St. Moritz Award was set up to rediscover, reward and celebrate that certain magical «something» that gives iconic personalities their unique human quality. The first of its kind, the St. Moritz Award recognizes the philanthropic aspects of distinguished careers. The St. Moritz award is a new event of universal significance. Its artistic and humanitarian focus makes it unique among the world’s rich family of awards and celebrations. We are very happy to welcome you to the first celebration of the St. Moritz Award. It will be a magical night to remember…!

Adolf Ogi Every human being has the right to live in dignity. But not everyone is granted this good fortune. Humanitarian catastrophes, wars and natural disasters repeatedly deprive millions of children, men and women from the right to enjoy a secure existence, to complete an education or to find enough to eat. Opportunities for being self-sufficient and controlling one’s own destiny are not spread evenly throughout the world, and nor is wealth fairly distributed. We all have to rely upon the devoted and selfless work of countless people and organizations on this Earth which, both on a small and large scale, create a little happiness, hope and prospect of a better life. The St. Moritz Award highlights this work and draws the public’s attention to it. St. Moritz is known as a

place where influential and prominent personalities meet, and this, coupled with the unique and relaxed atmosphere of the Swiss Engadine, has always been a source of inspiration for charitable activity. As President of the Honor Committee, I am delighted to present the first St. Moritz Award in its inaugural year. I am particularly thrilled that the honor is being bestowed on two internationally important organisations: namely Mary Kerry Kennedy representing the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights, and the A.C. Milan Foundation. Milan, was founded on February 2003 by AC Milan.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. h.c. Adolf Ogi Former President of Switzerland Former Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace President of the Honor Committee

St. Moritz Award International award for outstanding work in the area of charity and humanitarian aid

The St. Moritz Award is the first of its kind to honor international celebrities who use the privileges they enjoy through their personal fame for the good of others, by making a significant contribution in the area of charity and humanitarian aid. The St. Moritz Award is presented every year in St. Moritz, at a gala ceremony. This international accolade has been awarded for the very first time in 2010. The St. Moritz Award 2010 goes to Mrs. Kerry Kennedy, in recognition of the valuable work done by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights and the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation of Europe in the area of international human rights. The award is shared by A.C. Milan Foundation, which uses the privileged position of one of the world’s most famous football clubs to support humanitarian projects. The award is designed by the international artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. The initiative for the St. Moritz Award came from the two entrepreneurs Alexandra della Porta Rodiani (president) and Maura Wasescha-Gentilini (vice-president), who have received support for their cause from the regional tourism organization Desti-

nation Engadin-St. Moritz and the local tourist board Kurverein St. Moritz, as well as important partners with local roots such as the gourmet chef Reto Mathis and the «Hotelier of the World» and managing director of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, Hans Wiedemann. The Official Carrier of the St. Moritz Award, and therefore preferred partner for international flights, is American Airlines. The winners are assessed every year through close collaboration between the organizers of the St. Moritz Award and the Honor Committee. Winners of the St. Moritz Award are then invited to join the Honor Committee and automatically take part in selecting the nominees for next year’s award.

«I was immediately inspired by the idea of supporting a greater commitment in the area of humanitarian initiatives and to r aise public awareness of this issue!»

He is well known most of all for his unique bronze spheres, the material he prefers for his works of art, which «break down» and open in front of the watcher who looks for the internal mechanism, in a contrast between the perfect smoothness of the shape and the complexity hidden inside

it. Since 1954 he lives and works in Milan , near the dock of Porta Ticinese. In 1995 he created the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation dedicated to his work and to contemporary art.

She is now director of Balletto dell’Opera di Roma.

Milva Singer and actress Milva reigned for decades among the most popular and far-ranging performers. In 1961 Milva won third place at the influential San Remo Music Festival. In 1962 Milva headlined

In addition to her singing career, Ornella Vanoni was active in other arts, starring in stage and TV shows, movies. The inclusion of her former hit «L’Appuntamento» (1970) on the Ocean’s Twelve soundtrack sparked a worldwide renewal of interest in Ornella Vanoni. Today, she is still recording and performing with great success.

Paris’ legendary Olympia Theatre, performing a set of Piaf songs to rapturous reception. Soon after, she befriended actor and director Giorgio Strehler, who nurtured her interest in musical theater and encouraged the expansion of her repertoire, recommending works spanning from the Italian resistance movement to Bertolt Brecht. Milva would become the first actress outside of Germany to prove successful in Brecht adaptations. She remained a remarkably eclectic and adventurous performer in the years to follow, collaborating with composers including Luciano Berio, Ennio Morricone, Mikis Theodorakis, and Astor Piazzolla and performing at venues including Milan’s La Scala, Berlin’s Deutsche Oper, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and even the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She started her artistic career in 1960 as a theatrical actress under the direction of Giorgio Strehler in his Piccolo Teatro of Milan. At the same time, she started singing, recording for a high-class public. The folklore and popular songs she reinvented in her recordings of this period, especially the ones connected with organized crime, gave her the nickname cantante della mala («Underworld Singer»). Owing to the songs «Senza fine» and «Che cosa c’è» written for her by Gino Paoli, her popularity rose in 1963. Next year, she won the Festival of Neapolitan song with «Tu si na cosa grande». For the year 2010 Fondazione Milan is supporting, amongst others, the following projects: Fondazione Milan for L’Aquila On April 6th, 2009 the region Abruzzo, and especially the city of L’Aquila, were struck by a terrible earthquake. AC Milan and Fondazione Milan have immediately reacted by supporting some of the numerous first aid initiatives: the First Team’s players have donated 11 prebuilt houses to tackle the emergency situation in the weeks following the earthquake. Then the Club and its Foundation have identified a project especially focused on the needs of children and youngsters to support them in their educational development and training. For this reason they have initiated a project for the construction of a multi-purpose gym and a 5-a-side soccer pitch in Pagliare di Sassa, a small village in the suburbs of L’Aquila. Fondazione Milan and Fondazione Stefano Borgonovo for the fight against ALS Fondazione Milan has been supporting for two seasons the fight against ALS and is raising funds for research and care of ALS patients and their families. Thanks to the matches played by Milan Glories, the team captained by Franco Baresi and made up great of AC Milan champions of the past, it was possible to raise funds to support several projects. As for patient care, two scholarships were granted to the

ALS Center at the Hospital «Maggiore della Carità» in Novara, whereas research was supported through the Neurothon Association that over the last few months has been focusing its efforts on the realisation of a neural stem cell bank as a source of cells for patient treatment and on the definition of a clinical trial protocol for ALS patients. Together for Haiti Following the earthquake on last 12th January in Haiti, the commitment and efforts to provide concrete help to a land already tormented by poverty and social conflict have become even more important. Fondazione Milan has decided to support the Francesca Rava Foundation - N.P.H. Italy, which has been engaged for over twenty years in Haiti in the «Safe Motherhood Project» that pursues the objective of providing potential victims of puerperal fever with free access to equipped healthcare facilities and adequate medical care and ensuring appropriate hygiene and sanitary conditions for safe childbirth. In Haiti there are no public facilities that offer

23

assistance to women during childbirth and there are only very few places, all of them supported by international humanitarian organisations, capable of providing acceptable and free care. Milan per la Scuola - Tutti i colori del gioco (Milan for Schools - All Colors of the Game) is a playful - educative initiative, promoted by AC Milan and AC Milan Foundation which aims to involve primary school pupils and let them discover the values of good citizenship through sport. Football is giving the children a message of friendship, respect of the opponent and fun. During the 2008-09 school year, the project, focussed on physical education and sports culture, developed many playful, didactic and extra-school activities, all coordinated and integrated in the primar y school programs. Through «Milan per la Scuola - Tutti i colori del gioco» (Milan for Schools All Colors of the Game), an impressive number of 5,000 kits were distributed in 2,200 schools, for a total of 110,000 students involved, spread all over Italy.

Inspir ation in the Alps St. Moritz is one of the most famous winter sports resorts in the world. For many decades this prestigious ski resort in the Swiss Engadine has been a favourite meeting place for international celebrities from the fields of politics, commerce, sport and culture. The St. Moritz Award aims to exploit this privileged position to create a platform that draws attention to outstanding achievements in the area of charity and humanitarian aid. There is something magical in the air in St. Moritz, expressed in the unique colours of nature that mark the changing of the seasons and the gentle passage of time. The glorious alpine landscape of the Engadine has always been a great source of inspiration for phi-

losophers, authors and travellers. Famous figures such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann and royalty from all over the globe have not just sought out St. Moritz as a holiday resort or a spiritual retreat, but have always been charmed by the magic allure of this high valley in the Swiss Alps. Friedrich Nietzsche’s poetic masterpiece «Also sprach Zarathustra» is supposed to have been heavily influenced by the time he spent in Sils-Maria, and the history of the development of winter tourism in St. Moritz can be traced back to visiting English aristocrats who initially had their reservations about the harsh mountain climate, but were eventually won over and stayed for months. Several pioneers of aviation completed their first historic flights and landings in this region.

St. Moritz is a location which conjures up magical stories and has had a significant influence on world literature. It has achieved world fame as an ideal spot for activity holidays or simply for relaxing. It inevitably attracts people looking for something special – both in summer and winter. People who themselves have already achieved a lot in life – and continue to do so. Leading lights who have worked hard for their success, but have still managed to keep their feet firmly on the ground. Thus St. Moritz and the Engadine region have always been a source of inspiration for philanthropy and helping the less fortunate in society. In the pristine alpine air, social status and monetary worth tend to lose their importance: no matter how wealthy people are, they are very humbled in the presence of the mighty 4000-metre peaks that encompass the valley. This is what fosters free thinking and a free spirit. In this wonderful location 1800 metres above sea level, the real stars in the spotlight are essentially the mountains, while the water, air and glowing

sun are the principal actors on the alpine stage. Celebrities seeking a quiet, relaxing time to recharge their batteries are inspired by what they see around them and instinctively respond to this special environment. Thanks to such immense sources of inspiration, St. Moritz often encourages great ideas and motivates people to do remarkable things. The St. Moritz Award is hoping to revitalise this centuries-old tradition of charitable activity in the region. Despite the many events, fund-raising initiatives and award ceremonies that take place in St. Moritz, there has never been an official award that honors socially committed celebrities who use their privileged position to do good in this world. The St. Moritz Award fills this gap by creating a framework that honors initiatives by public figures in the field of human rights and humanitarian projects. Thus the spirit of the Engadine continues to inspire great acts and motivate people across the globe to aspire to exceptional achievements.

The magic of the moment, a world of well-being. These are what Maura Wasescha represents, with her name, her experience and a team of selected staff. Maura Wasescha acquired in the cradle her Italian sense of beauty and culture and has perfected it over decades in St. Moritz, Switzerland’s classy health resort. Absolute discretion and exclusivity are her trademarks. But the name Maura Wasescha is more than a brand. It is a commitment to good taste and style. And for Maura Wasescha, who is a mother of four children, this means to be able to enjoy the perfect moment in the company of family or friends in the loveliest surroundings. That’s why Maura Wasescha does not just have exclusive properties for sale or rent. She offers the perfect luxury service, so that the magic of the moment becomes timeless enjoyment. With the St. Moritz Award, Maura Wasescha combines the spirit of St. Moritz with the spirit of worldwide charity and dedicated people.
