OUR PARTNERS & Patrons The SUFF HQ kindly sponsored by Sydney College of the Arts.

Cultural & educational partners

welcome

screening / media partners

On our 5th birthday we have decided to gift you with 34 sessions (double last years program) that celebrate values that forge the creative undercurrent of this city – debauchery, civil disobedience, provocation, difference, indulgence, deviancy, community, controversy and genius. With upgraded projection at the venue, we are showcasing some mind-blowing feature films this year. Starting with the hilariously perverse film, SUPER by original Troma writer, James Gunn – he’s got the Hollywood cast, but once a subversive always a subversive! We wanted a fun and f**ked up opening night film - and this is it! Plus many more treats with films so diverse – wild and completely challenging. Plus the award-winning documentary “Better This World” on Sunday - painting the crazy times we are living in post 9/11. Plus we have a focus on bizarre and wacky Japenese cinema, some great music-based documentaries (where fascinating stories go beyond just the music) and we will be closing with a bang, screening the longawaited, sexy thriller X by Sydney filmmaker, Jon Hewitt! Plus don’t forget to note the date of the SUFF+PLUS Party, screening and awards at Sydney College of the Arts on Saturday 17th September. So many films to mention, we hope you come and join us at the Factory Theatre in September, watch, drink, chat and no doubt laugh - as films are so much better when shared together!

“The most subversive and perverse superhero movie ever made” – Anthony Kaufman, Indiewire The Crimson Bolt is here to fight crime, the only way he knows how - with a pipe wrench. When sad-sack loser Frank (Rainn Wilson) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), he finds himself bereft and wholly unable to cope. But, inspired shortly after by fictional man-made superheroes of lore, he decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY crimefighter, The Crimson Bolt. With a hand-made suit, a wrench, and a crazed sidekick named Boltie (Ellen Page), the Crimson Bolt beats his way through the mean streets of crime in hopes of saving his wife.

Styled as superhero film meets grindhouse cinema, and directed by former Troma writer James Gunn (Tromeo and Juliet), this outlandishly dark comedy with doses of extreme gore still manages to take you on a heartfelt journey with two misfits who are trying to find their costumed place in the world.

The intimate documentary breaks the surface of the troubled and brilliant world of one of the greatest authors of all time.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage of Burroughs, as well as exclusive interviews with colleagues and confidants including John Waters, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Sonic Youth, Laurie Anderson, Amiri Baraka, Jello Biafra, and David Cronenberg, WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: A MAN WITHIN is a probing, yet loving look at the man whose works once savaged conservative ideals, spawned countercultural movements, and reconfigured 20th century culture. Fans of cult exploitation cinema of the late 1960s and early ‘70s will relish this engaging tribute to the greatest erotic filmmaker in the US: Stephen C. Apostolof (aka A.C. Stephen). After escaping a Communist dictatorship in Eastern Europe to make his American dream come true, together with his close friend Ed Wood, Stephen became the father of sexploitation cinema before the liberalisation of pornography. Chronicling his life and work including a hilarious look at his directorial debut / breakthrough, “Orgy of the Dead” (adapted by Wood from his own novel), which had about 20 pages of script, a cemetery set they could use and “no ideas,” this documentary proves Stephen is deserved of the title - worst director of all time!

“ Long eclipsed by the inimitable ineptitude of frequent collaborator Ed Wood, Bulgarian-born director Stephen Apostolof posthumously gets some of the attention he craved” – Boyd Van Hoeij, Variety

For Nina - Schnitt love is not necessarily a matter of emotion – she is rather looking for an authentic depiction of sex. The intimate collaboration turns into experiments with film, love and bodies and finally has an impact on the private relationships between the three of them. It seems that the boundaries between acting and reality begin to disappear.

An intimate, affecting portrait of the life and work of ground-breaking cult performance artist and key figure in the underground music scene for over 30 years, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV), and his other half and collaborator, Lady Jaye. The film is centered around the daring sexual transformations the pair underwent for their “Pandrogyne” project, so Genesis could become a she and resemble his beloved Lady Jaye. With peroxide hair, full lips and gold teeth, Genesis does not go unnoticed. Living life as the ultimate experiment, they transform their bodies through cosmetic surgery to become a work of art. Director Marie Losier gained unprecedented access to the couple’s public and private lives, plus interviews (Orlan, Peaches, Peter Christopherson), which results in a must-see, deeply moving, multi-faceted profile, of two of the twenty-first century’s most radical avant-garde artists.

profane Muna is a young Muslim sex worker in the midst of a spiritual crisis. Searching for her “jinn,” a demon, both good and evil, that resides in us all according to the Quran. Through this she hopes to reconcile her traditional Islamic upbringing represented by her uneasy friendship with Ali, a cab driver with her current, decadent Western lifestyle embodied by her fellow domme Mary. In this psychosexual horror story, Alshaibi combines his background in political documentary and transgressive cinema to tell an intensely personal story about the clash between Western and Middle Eastern cultures.

“A twisted fusion of sex and death… will surely shock” – Twitchfilm Japan’s prince of transgressive cinema, Sion Sono (Suicide Club, Cold Fish) brings us an erotic, psychosexual tale of sex, money and murder. Unsatisfied housewife Izumi, Professor of Literature Mitsuko, and police detective Kazuko offset the banality of their everyday lives with secret and notso-secret sexual misadventures. Empowerment and misanthropy go hand-in-hand as the explicit details of their affairs are brought to the surface, and a gruesome murder links their fates.

“Kaf kaesqu e storytellin g… a Guilty ple asure” – Variety

With this risqué, noir-esque film, director Sion Sono (Love Exposure, Cold Fish) presents a story based on a true-life crime, offering his trademark view on the darker side of society.Told through the looking glass of sex, words, madness, death and family, the film bombards the audience with graphic images and assaults the emotions with classical music - this is a movie that provokes all your senses!

Of Dolls And Murder (Susan Marks, USA, 2010, 70 mins) John Waters narrates this documentary on the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. Created by Frances Glessner Lee in the 1930s to teach homicide detectives, these violent and sometimes bloody dollhouse dioramas merge the educational, gothic and kitsch. This absorbing film extends into cultural fascination with forensic science manifested through CSI and its ilk, offering a fascinating view of the world of crime, death and detection.

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers (Tim Rutili, 2010, 84 mins) This unique and visionary gothic tale focuses on psychic Zel, a fortune teller who lives in a large house filled with ghosts including a blind band (gloriously performed by Califone). Zel offers her clients and the ghosts a conduit between worlds. However, events take an unexpected turn when a mysterious light appears in the woods. A perfectly realised, dreamlike movie that combines weird Americana and folk mythology with surrealism and a genuinely offbeat sensibility.

The artists and poets of cinema since before WWI have always been free radicals, crazy about filmmaking and pushing the artform in radical new directions. Trapped in a no man’s land, excluded both from the art world and the film industry, they boldly created a grassroots network for making and showing their films and created a profound body of work that continues to influence our culture. So come on a fascinating and delightful voyage through a history of experimental cinema, accompanied by Jonas Mekas and Peter Kubelka, two great and celebrated artists, who will bring to this odyssey: humour (tales of dumpster diving for food and watching a Hollywood film with Brakhage while lying on their backs at the base of the screen), gravity and above all, memory. Featuring old and new footage of notorious experimental filmmakers such as Hans Richter, Robert Breer, Michael Snow, Andy Warhol, MM Serra, and Maya “ Warm and inspiring, Chodorov’s film Deren among others – this film is a must see for part essay and part loving tribute”. both the film fan and filmmaker.

Empty abandoned swimming pools, suburban streets and parking lots form the backdrop to the story of skateboarder Josh Sandoval. Drifting from suburb to suburb, Sandoval appears like the classic anti-hero,part-punk and part-bohemian, avoiding the bleak certainties of everyday life in favour of the magical pleasures to be had in skateboarding, hanging out with his friends and falling in love. This world echoes that described so well by the likes of Larry Clarke and Harmony Korine.

Lensed with a true appreciation for the beauty of the everyday and with a warm intimacy that helps paint an evocative, always powerful, and occasionally seductive image of the outsider skate culture. Dragonslayer won Grand Jury awards at SxSW and it’s easy to see why. With its strangely compelling portrait of Josh, his ersatz family and friends and their itinerant lifestyle, there’s a real sense of the fleeting freedoms offered by the skateboard culture.

Tsukiko is a shy girl with a passion for photography and always feeling as if she exists in her sister Tomie’s shadow. One day, as Tsukiko is impulsively photographing Tomie, she bears witness to a metal rod impaling her sister. On the 1st anniversary of Tomie’s death, Tsukiko is offered the job of photographer for her school newspaper by no other than Toshio, her deceased sister’s boyfriend, whom Tsukiko has always had a crush on. That same day, the doorbell rings and there is Tomie, back from the dead, even briefly evoking her own death! The film then masterfully descends into an uncanny and perverse nightmare wrought with Cronenberg-esque horror. Talking severed heads, body mutations and destructive tentacles take over reality and create an endlessly oppressive atmosphere. This film is the latest adaption of the Tomie Manga series, which centres around a mysterious girl who appears again and again in various people’s lives and haunts them until their eventual end.

main cinema 2 friends. 8 bombs. 1 fbi informant. Two boyhood friends from Midland, Texas – David McKay and Bradley Crowder – fall under the sway of a charismatic revolutionary ten years their senior. At the volatile 2008 Republican Convention the “Texas Two” cross a line that radically changes their lives. The result: eight homemade bombs, multiple domestic terrorism charges and a high stakes entrapment defense hinging on the actions of a controversial FBI informant. A dramatic story of idealism, loyalty, crime and betrayal. This documentary, Better This World, goes to the heart of the War on Terror and its impact on civil liberties and political dissent in post-9/11 America.
