SPECIAL EVENT
WIENER-DOG For Opening Night 2016, SUFF Welcomes you to the Doghouse! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wince, and you’ll sigh - such is the genius of Wiener-Dog a cutthroat comedy brimming with brilliantly caustic and truthful observations about the human condition. Reviving his beloved character Dawn Wiener, the geeky kid who won our hearts in Welcome to the Dollhouse, auteur and agitator extraordinaire Todd Solondz crafts a nihilistic portmanteau of stories linked solely by changing ownership of an adorable dachshund. Elegantly shot by Todd Haynes’ go-to-cinematographer Edward Lachman (Carol, Far From Heaven) and playing like Au Hazard Balthazar in the burbs or a twisted version of Lassie for misanthropes, Wiener-Dog combines a brilliant mix of surrealism with searing deadpan humor. The film follows Dawn Wiener (Greta Gerwig), now a veterinary technician who adopts the eponymous pup.
THU15
Everything goes awry when Brandon McCarthy (Kieran Culkin), Dawn’s old boyfriend comes back into her life - all hooked on heroin. The hound soon goes on to play the straight mutt to the tragicomic lives of a young cancer-survivor stuck between squabbling parents (Julie Delpy and Tracy Letts), a failed film professor who stands in for Solondz himself (Danny DeVito) and an embittered senior who suffers visions warning of the road less travelled (Ellen Burstyn). Growing increasingly dark as the film progresses, Wiener-Dog is a blisteringly funny, wondrously warped look at the absurdity of life and death from one of contemporary cinema’s most fearless and distinctive voices.

“Restored! Reviled! Revolting!” That’s Multiple Maniacs. Step right up to witness the tale of Lady Divine’s travelling sideshow ‘The Cavalcade of Perversions,’ a free exhibit of extreme perversions that includes the puke eater, the two men tonguing, the armpit slurper, the heroin addict going cold turkey and so much more! Turns out this exposé of the obscene is just a front for a group of psychotic criminals, who start killing their audiences rather than simply shocking them every night. With nowhere to go but down, the film follows Lady Divine on her debauched descent into full-blown mania leading to a climax involving a horny fifteenfoot lobster. From the High
AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Priest of smut, John Waters, comes this immaculate restoration of a rarely seen cinematic masterpiece. The film emerged from Waters already-established desire to make the most offensive movies he could think of, glorifying carnage and mayhem for laughs whilst also reflecting his bafflement at the ‘60s hippy movement. A thematic and tonal precursor to his fiendish Pink Flamingoes but a vastly superior film, Multiple Maniacs is gloriously grotesque and makes its way to SUFF at long last, replete with all manner of depravity.

A CRACKUP AT THE RACE RIOTS Inspired by Harmony Korine’s experimental novel, the groundbreaking A Crackup at the Race Riots is solely comprised of clips from previously made YouTube videos. Relying on an innovative method of collage, the film presents a scathing condemnation of the modern American dream, eschewing plot, linear narrative, character development and scene setting in favour of halfremembered scenarios, jokes and ruminations. Capturing the fragmented moments of American life — observed through the demented lens of social media, TV, and pop culture obsession — A Crackup at the Race Riots not only retains but also develops the novel’s hypnotic sense of anarchy, impending chaos and weird wonder. Weaved together by the
Belgian collective Leo Gabin (the nom de guerre deployed by a triumvirate of youngish Belgian-based multi-media artists: Lieven Deconinck, Gaëtan Begerem and Robin De Vooght) that previously contributed to Korine’s Spring Breakers, it’s tailor-made for the YouTube generation. At once a renegotiation of the function of cinema and role of narrative, the film is a remarkable, essential work, showing only on the big screen at SUFF!

AAAAAAAAH! Imagine a Britain populated by depraved beasts that look like humans on the surface but think, act and communicate like monkeys. These days, that’s probably not so hard, right? This is the world of Aaaaaaaah!, the new comedy-horror directed by Sightseers and The World’s End actor Steve Oram that observes a South London family who come under fire from a pair of menacing strangers. Barbaric, disturbing and riotously funny, the film is a blistering satire about gender and class relations as well as a deft examination of loss, displacement and the human condition in 21st century Britain. Starring Australia’s own Lucy Honigman, plus an all-star cast of British comedians
including Toyah Willcox, Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding (from The Mighty Boosh), it also features a belting score by the seminal guitarist Robert Fripp. Add a quarter cup of Mike Leigh, a shake of Luis Buñuel and a sprinkle Yorgos Lanthimos, then beat the living shit out of it with a hammer and you might end up with something that resembles the masterpiece that is Aaaaaaaah! Steve Oram’s directorial debut Aaaaaaaah! comes on like a collaboration between Dogme ‘95 and Chris Morris. It’s hard to think of another film closely like it in British cinema. It really is that out-there and singular. MARTYN CONTERIO, CINE-VUE.COM

Lou (Natasha Lyonne) and Sadie (Chloë Sevigny) know how to party. Fuck, they put Andrew WK to shame. Stuck in a downward spiral, Lou awakens with no memory of the night before and showing symptoms of a pregnancy that seems to double in size everyday. Unfazed, Lou continues to live awash in booze and pot smoke until she meets Lorna (Meg Tilly), a conspiracy nut who suspects the

pregnancy might be related to an alien arrival and secret military medical experiments. Building up to a climactic sequence that needs to be seen to be believed, director Danny Perez (who previously helmed music videos for the likes of Animal Collective, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Black Dice) cements himself as a as a bona-fide purveyor of demented visuals and unrelenting madness. Garnering favorable comparisons to Cronenberg, Lynch and Polanski, Antibirth is a hallucinatory body horror and a cult classic for the modern age.
What if the Dude from The Big Lebowski somehow ended up in David Cronenberg’s The Brood? That’s what my summary would be if I was ripping epic bong hits on my scuzzy couch and describing this epically fucked-up thing I just saw. JORDAN HOFFMAN, THE GUARDIAN.

BASKIN Attention all gore hounds: pull up your seat and feast upon the blood-drenched dish of red meat that is Can Evrenol’s Baskin. Starting out as a campy police thriller before swiftly taking a sharp turn to balls-to-the-wall horror, Baskin tells the story of a team of police officers whose macho roughhousing is interrupted by a distress call from another, nearby unit. They soon track the call to an abandoned building, which appears to be deserted from the outside. Upon entering, the men become trapped in an inescapable orgy of ritualistic violence,
SUN18 cannibalism and sadistic sexual torture, led by the enigmatically nefarious ‘Father’ (a character with a disturbing resemblance to Pluto from The Hills Have Eyes).’ With this searing feature debut, Evrenol has been labeled Turkey’s answer to Rob Zombie and his film has drawn well-deserved comparisons to Clive Baker’s Hellraiser and the work of Lucio Fulci. Fans of pitch-black midnight movie madness won’t want to miss this phantasmagorical trip headfirst into the bowels of hell.
Baskin is one of the best genre offerings to come along in quite some time. It’s strange, savage and genuinely creepy; this is a hellish fever dream captured on film, and truly unmissable. This is the horror movie fans of the genre wish would happen more often, and Can Evrenol is the future. KIERAN FISHER, FLICKERING MYTH.

There’ll be streamers, balloons and buckets of blood as SUFF celebrates Carrie’s 40th birthday with a screening of Brian De Palma’s digitally re-mastered horror classic. Based on Stephen King’s debut novel, the film follows Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), a young girl raised in isolation by her psychotically domineering mother (Piper Laurie). After a series of embarrassing incidents, the shy and awkward Carrie is ruthlessly teased at the hands of sadistic high school bullies. Little do they know the vengeful Carrie possesses the telekinetic ability to manipulate objects with her mind. Ratcheting up the tension, the film builds to one of the most captivating and fiendishly twisted climaxes in the history of cinema, in which

DIGITALLY REMASTERED Carrie’s stunning powers are unleashed during a delectably deranged school prom. Carrie also features a young John Travolta and impressive art design by Jack Fisk (who worked on David Lynch’s Eraserhead and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life). An early example of De Palma’s distinctive style, Carrie blends romance, dark humor and eerie frights. Be sure to also check out Noah Baumbach’s De Palma, screening at this year’s festival, a remarkable insight into the making of Carrie and the rest of De Palma’s oeuvre. The reason Carrie is still held in such high regard as a horror classic is very simple: it’s all in the sheer directorial bravado. De Palma at the top of his game. ANDREW COLLINS, EMPIRE

ENTERTAINMENT What do you get when you cross Sir Elton John with a saber-toothed tiger? I don’t know, but you better keep it away from your ass. Such is the shtick of Entertainment’s star Neil Hamburger. Bringing his infamous stand-up character to the big screen, Australianborn Gregg Turkington turns in the performance of his career, taking his squirm-worthy cues from Andy Kaufman in his creation of this off-kilter comedian, he of the delirious, watered-down comb-over, dated tuxedo and awkward, nasal delivery. Playing dumps and dive bars across the Mojave Desert, Neil is living a miserable life and delivering performances to match. Between gigs, he tries in vain to contact his daughter, visits local sites of interest and spends time with increasingly
SAT17 insane characters played by the likes of Tye Sheridan, John C. Reilly and a positively deranged Michael Cera. What starts off as a somewhat realistic encapsulation of the depressions and banalities of life on the road rapidly mutates into angry surrealism best described as Blue Velvet by way of Paris, Texas. Directed with aplomb by Rick Alverson (The Comedian) and cowritten by Turkington and Tim Heidecker (The Tim & Eric Awesome Show). The film is without question one of the most artistically and morally radical works to come out of American indie cinema. In a word, it is destined to become a cult classic for the ages. I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER If David Cronenberg dropped acid while directing a Dexter prequel with a supernatural twist, it would probably look a little something like I Am Not a Serial Killer. Starring Max Records (all grown up from his appearance in Where the Wild Things Are) and a brilliant turn by Back to the Future’s Christopher Lloyd, the film is a darkly heartfelt, astonishingly foreboding, and imaginatively sinister tale of a teenager battling to repress his violent, psychopathic urges. Raised in a mortuary, John’s own nascent urge to murder makes him a perfect amateur sleuth when an organ-harvesting serial killer strikes his folksy Mid-Western town. Directed by BAFTAnominated filmmaker Billy O’Brien (Isolation) and shot on grainy 16mm by Robbie Ryan
(hot off lensing Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake and Andrea Arnold’s Jury prize winner American Honey), I Am Not A Serial Killer is resplendent with the DP’s trademark naturalism, turning the snow-covered town into a character all of its own, engulfing the characters and evoking a pathos and horror that lands a one-two knockout combination!

NAKED LUNCH Adapted from the classic, once-considered-unfilmable novel by William S. Burroughs’s, Naked Lunch follows Bill Lee (Peter Weller) an exterminator who develops an addiction to the gnarly substance he uses to kill bugs and plunges into the nightmarish Interzone. More mental state than actual place, it’s a netherworld of sinister cabals and giant talking bugs. Under the hallucinatory influence of the drug, Lee’s grasp of reality disintegrates as he uses a talking insect typewriter to publish obscure reports for his new bug overlords. Directed by body horror master David Cronenberg, Naked Lunch is humorous, grotesque and always surreal. Mingling Burroughs’s novel with his own drug-induced writing processes, the result is an
25TH ANNIVERSARY evocative, paranoid trip and a self-reflexive investigation into the mysteries of creativity. Hazy, substance-addled and gleefully confused, the cult classic is replete with high doses of the cerebral alienation and biomorphic special effects fans of Cronenberg have come to expect. So supremely fucked up, the film’s imagery oozes a surreal syrup that, once ingested, will stick to your eyeballs and intestines like literary goop. One of the most penetrating examinations of a writer’s processes ever made. Certainly it’s one of the strangest and most disturbing… There’s a synergistic overlap here between Cronenberg’s own particular brand of weirdness and Burroughs’s; they’re both twisted in ways that complement each other nicely. THE LOVE WITCH Shot on glorious 35mm and offering a visual dalliance between Hitchcock, Meyer and Sirk, The Love Witch is a stunning homage to ‘60s technicolour camp, melodrama and exploitation flicks. The film follows Elaine, a voluptuous Wiccan, determined to find the love of her life. From her gothic Victorian apartment she concocts potions to aid seduction but when her spells work too well, she ends up with a string of hapless victims instead of the man of her dreams. Addicted to love, Elaine keeps searching and bodies keep piling up, but who could blame her? She simply loves men to death! Lusciously coloured to complement the film’s striking costume and production design, Anne Biller presents a work of total vision and control,
with the filmmaker serving as director, writer, producer, editor and production designer. Deftly tackling both the fear of female sexuality and contemporary feminist ideals, the film does more than emulate. It thoroughly subverts, shifts, ridicules and questions the oftensexist gender dynamics of the cinema it is referencing, concocting out of it a potion as fresh and as necessary as it is potent. This spellbinding ode to exploitation films of the 1960s and 70s is impressive not only for its mockTechnicolor hues and period mise-en-scène but also for what lies beneath: a creepy and cunning examination of female fantasy. THE MIND'S EYE On a snowy back road in New England, Zack is searching for the love of his life, Rachel. When he’s unwittingly assailed by two cops looking to pick a fight, he uses his telekinetic powers to send them hurtling through the air. Clearly, they’ve picked the wrong hombre to fuck with. After being restrained by the police, his special abilities attract the interest of Dr. Slovack, the head of an institute for individuals with telekinetic powers. He convinces Zack to visit his clinic but three months into his “treatment”, Zack comes to realize that Slovak isn’t out to help those with powers but rather to use them to serve himself. Struggling to overcome the effects of the drugs he’s been administered, Zack must summon the strength to stand
FRI16 up to Slovack and his band telekinetic assassins in what makes for one hell bloody final showdown. Moving at a fast pace and ticking off a scorecard of brain-melting kills, The Mind’s Eye is at once a smartly crafted contemporary thriller and a gloriously giddy throwback to films like Scanners and Carrie that never wavers from its true DIY indie spirit. The Mind’s Eye delivers the goods, and the Midnight Madness crowd may appreciate the red meat tossed in its direction. The practical effects, coordinated by John Ruggieri, are resolutely old-school, a feast of headsplitting (and head-rolling) gore and squishy detonations of flesh. The make-up, too, is a Fangoria pictorial of popping veins, infected pustules, and evolving facial decay. SCOTT TOBIAS, VARIETY

THE VIRGIN PSYCHICS
After exploding heads at SUFF 2014 with his Why Don’t You Play in Hell, Japanese cinema’s supreme shockmeister returns with his most bawdy film to date. Sion Sono released five films in the last year and even starred in his own documentary, but he has saved his best for SUFF: The Virgin Psychics. After the occurrence of a strange cosmic event, a group of aroused teen virgins awaken to discover that they have special powers. We follow Yoshiro, who is now able to read people’s minds; Terumitsu, who has the power of telekinesis (which he mostly uses to levitate sex toys); and Yosuke, who can teleport (but only while completely naked). When Tokyo becomes
a hotbed of erotic psychic terrorists, this unwitting group must band together to save the day. Think The Avengers meets John Waters at his filthiest, with The Virgin Psychics proving unrepentantly prurient, replete with flesh, boners, upskirts and all manner of sex toys. Yes, it’s the raucous blend of lowbrow humour and the madcap lunacy that Sono is known for. This cheerfully gutterminded supernatural farce is Sono’s fifth feature to emerge this year, and it more than compensates for whatever the earlier movies may have lacked in Japanese schoolgirl fetishism, perspiring cleavage, levitating sex toys and slap-you-in-the-face erection gags. TRASH FIRE From horror maestro Richard Bates Jr. (a SUFF alumni whose Suburban Gothic, screened in 2014) comes Trash Fire, a comedy-horror so pitchblack it’s paralleled only by the colour of Donald Trump’s wretched heart. Owen is one miserable prick — though his life did get off to a bad start when a fire killed his parents and left his sister Pearl morbidly disfigured. Now plagued by alcoholism and seizures, his maladies take a back seat only to his noxious personality. His girlfriend-ofthree-years, Isabel, has had enough and has learned to dole out the insults as well as she gets them. When Isabel announces she is pregnant, however, it sparks a desire to meet Owen’s family. The pair visit Pearl, who now lives with Owen’s grandmother Violet, a terse authoritarian
SAT17 whose indifference to Owen’s contrition and blatant disdain for Isabel is not masked in the slightest. Their short stay quickly devolves from an uncomfortable visit to a ballistic house of horrors in this well-acted, gorgeously shot exercise in psychological cruelty that will have you squirming in your seat right up until the film’s punishing conclusion. The dialogue is so acerbic, it’s practically corrosive, aided by fantastic performances by Angela Trimbur and Adrian Grenier at his career best (you won’t think of Vincent Chase once). The talent on display here builds the tension right up until the gut-punch of a finale. This is a Trash Fire from which it is impossible to turn away. KEVIN MONAHAN

WE ARE THE FLESH In a festival choc-full of extreme cinema, We Are The Flesh might be the most grisly, beautiful and off-itshead bonkers. Offering a rare mix of unrelenting violence and raw beauty – the film is a visual tone poem, an utterly wild and ravaging feast for the senses. Set in a post-apocalyptic Mexico, brother and sister, Lucio and Fauna wander a city of ruins in search of food and shelter. They soon meet a man (legendary Mexican actor Noe Hernandez, who delivers a larger-than-life performance sizzling with rage), claiming to be an immortal sorcerer and offering salvation. Coopting them to transform his
apartment into a womb-like sanctuary in a quest for transcendence, this sadistic beast pushes them to explore the darkest of taboos: S&M, incest, cannibalism, nothing is off limits. Filmed largely in a single apartment space, with three primary actors Emiliano Rocha Minter’s film is a miracle, crafting one of the year’s most visceral cinematic experiences from nothing. Produced by Carlos Reygadas and praised by Mexican heavyweights Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuaron as a work of pure genius, We Are the Flesh is an utterly distinctive, visually kaleidoscopic, hell of a feature debut.

57 LAWSON Set in a social housing estate in central Sydney, 57 Lawson preserves the disparate voices of the tenants at a time when these communities are becoming increasingly marginalised by the city around them. A patient observation of the daily lives of the area’s inhabitants over the course of one evening, 57 Lawson is a hybrid dramadocumentary film about a specific place at a specific time.
This film is an act of preservation. It is an archive of a city - of structures, traces, faces, bodies, sounds and images of a Sydney that I have almost forgotten. Almost like a dream. ART OF THE PRANK Joey Skaggs is the world’s greatest media prankster. Long before social media, shows like Punk’d and Jackass, and culture-jamming activist groups like The Yes Men, Skaggs had already perfected the media hoax as an art form. Famed for such fictions as The Celebrity Sperm Bank, Cathouse for Dogs, Fat Squad and Portofess, Skaggs is known for turning a critical lens on the media, showing just how easily they can be fooled into thinking the absurd might be real (with his outrageous pranks reported as fact by prestigious outlets such as The Village Voice, The Huffington Post and CNN). In Skaggs’ mind, if the media can so manipulate us then he’s set to manipulate them, one prank at a time. Filmed over the course of two years, Art of the
Prank offers unprecedented access into Joey’s inner circle of co-conspirators, chronicling his most famous pranks, and focusing on his most recent and complex hoax to date, which involves the very medium of film itself. Art of the Prank is an equal parts hilarious and emotive journey, tracking the evolution of its star a fierce proponent of critical thought and unwavering social rebellion hero.

DEAD HANDS DIG DEEP Back in the ‘90s when handwringing mothers the world over were writing op-eds about how Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor were making music that would lead to the end of the world as we knew it, Edwin Borsheim was quietly building a reputation as the most depraved frontman in rock. Borsheim of the Southern Californian metal band Kettle Cadaver was once infamous for his combination of talent, bizarre stage antics and brutal selfmutilation. A cross between Charles Manson and GG Allin, the masochistic Borsheim would repulse fans with his flagrant acts of debauchery: stapling his mouth shut during performances, nailing his balls to a board and performing with it dangling on stage — and once even fornicating with a coyote carcass in front of a
live audience. Now, years after the band’s demise, Borsheim has fallen into complete seclusion on his acre of land, and become a captive of the many of the horrible things he has created. In his beautifully rendered documentary, 19-year-old Sydney-based wunderkind Jai Love not only interrogates those closest to Borsheim to dissect his mental complexes, but also confronts Borsheim directly as he spirals further into a void of drug abuse and self-destruction, forcing him to reflect on his own troubled past.
The truth is [DEAD HANDS DIG DEEP] would be deeply unsettling if it were a horror film. As a documentary, it is terrifying. J.B. SPINS

DESERT AGE: A ROCK & ROLL SCENE HISTORY Desert rock, or stoner rock as it’s more affectionately known, has been quietly lighting up the California desert since the ‘70s. This dust-swept landscape harvested a rich culture of late nights, big crowds and loud music that soon became the stuff of legend. Two years in the making, Jason Pine’s first feature-length documentary attempts to decipher the rich and often complex musical history of California’s desert rock music scene. Avoiding a revisionist perspective, the film takes place moment to moment, focusing on the legendary and mythological stories told by the purveyors themselves. Desert Age features first-hand, neverbefore-seen interviews, archival footage and personal histories from the likes of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, The Foo Fighters),
Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Nick Oliveri (Mondo Generator), Brant Bjork (Kyuss), Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal), the members of Fu Man Chu and many more icons of the scene. Replete with kick-ass live footage and a thumping soundtrack to boot, these legends of rock candidly reveal the significance of California’s desert age, cementing its place as one of the most important sites in rock n’ roll history.

DON'T BLINK - ROBERT FRANK
CINEMA 2
Recently described by the New York Times as the world’s greatest living photographer, Robert Frank is perhaps best known for ‘The Americans’, his collection of black-andwhite images captured during a sojourn across the United States in the mid ‘50s. These snapshots casta candid eye on racism, alienation and class division, and were berated at the time for challenging America’s conceited post-war optimism, but are now considered some of the most important images ever committed to film. Less celebrated is Frank’s iconoclastic work as a filmmaker, having shot several groundbreaking experimental films like Pull My Daisy with Alan Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, One Hour with William Burroughs,

Shot largely in a sumptuous blackand-white palette matching Frank’s own images, the documentary also features a rollicking soundtrack, including Tom Waits, The Velvet Underground and Patti Smith that perfectly reflects Frank’s mood of fervent creativity. Don’t Blink: Robert Frank is at once a survey of Frank’s work and insight into his creative genius as a fame-shy pioneer, a skeptic of authority and a man stridently sympathetic with anyone who struggled against the rules. The end result is an unapologetically enthusiastic, excited, and earthy celebration of artistic creation and the life that makes it inevitable. JACOB OLLER, THE FILM STAGE

EAT THAT QUESTION: FRANK ZAPPA IN HIS OWN WORDS
For a guy who hates interviews, Zappa sure has a lot to say. Researched and constructed over the course of eight years, Eat That Question is a unique documentary comprised solely from footage of archival interviews and musical performances spanning Frank Zappa’s 30-year career. Spanning his first taste of fame playing the bicycle to cacophonic effect on The Steve Allen Show, the production of his cult classic 200 Motels, his battle in the senate against Tipper Gore’s Parents Music Resource Center and late-career switch from guitar virtuoso to Synclavier composer-extraordinaire, it offers a comprehensive insight into Zappa’s transformative journey as an artist. Sharply assembled by German veteran documentarian Thorsten
Schütte, the film also presents a jubilant celebration of Zappa through his public persona, giving us stunning insight into the man behind the music. Audacious and uncompromising in his creativity, Eat That Question honors Zappa as a serious artist, a genre-bending musical sophisticate, a social subversive and brilliant avant-gardist whose life-long mission to free his listener from conformity is as pertinent today as ever before. Be sure to catch Frank at his most candid; spittin’ hard, like only he can at SUFF 2016. Obviously Eat That Question is a slam-dunk for extant Zappa fans, but it’s bound to mint a few fresh converts as well. A fascinating look at an important artist, this is an essential piece of cinema. His family quickly launched a social media campaign to find him, with no luck. Shortly afterward, a very different and much larger online hunt swept the country: the search for the terrorists responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing. The film follows Sparrow as she learns of a case involving six elementary school girls who have been sexually abused by their principal. When the government reacts intensely, marking the girls as enemies of the state, Sparrow teams with first-time filmmaker Nanfu Wang to seek retribution. ROOM FULL OF SPOONS
Wiseau, you’re tearing me apaaaaaart! Often referred to as “The Citizen Kane of bad movies,” The Room is a certified classic of trashy cinema and the best-worst film ever made. Making a measly $1900 in its initial theatrical run, this disastrous trainwreck of a movie would go on to find a new life on the midnight movie circuit. The Room now plays weekly to audiences around the world, making it one of the most adored films of all time. But why is this the case? Why does an effort that almost systematically overlooks every fundamental rule of filmmaking warrant such appreciation? Featuring tell-all interviews from the entire cast and crew as well as the film’s most die-hard fans,
Room Full of Spoons offers the definitive behind-the-scenes look at the schlockiest feature ever made. When Wiseau himself becomes involved in the project, his presence brings another level of oddball drama to the proceedings. What begins as a loving paean to The Room quickly morphs into something weirder and even more beguiling as Harper begins to dig deeper into film’s enigmatic director. If you’re a fan of The Room, this is required viewing. It’s certainly enhanced my appreciation of the film, so much so that, though I’ve felt kinda burnt out on it for the last couple years, I now can’t wait to rewatch it. Hell, I might even throw some plastic spoons at my TV. CODY CLARKE, SMUG FILM

SNOW MONKEY In 2011, George Gittoes (documentarian, war photographer, humanitarian and winner of Sydney’s 2015 Peace Prize) set up his Yellow House Art Collective in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. In this compound, music, creativity and play are on show for the local youths in an attempt to drown out to sound of explosions and bullet-fire that dominate the nearby city centre. Gittoes’ film focuses specifically on three child gangs: the Snow Monkeys, who sell ice-creams from handcarts; the Ghostbusters, who wave smoke into cars to exorcise spirits and extract small tips; and a posse of thugs headed by razor-wielding, larger-than-life 10-year-old Steel. Injecting himself into the documentary, Gittoes gives these kids cameras and empowers to make their own
SAT17 vibrant, colourful, Pashto-style film infused with the violence they experience on a daily basis. Snow Monkey presents an insider’s view of a city often described as one of the most dangerous in the world, where brutality is ubiquitous and has the power to corrupt even its youngest citizens. The end result remains an unsettling depiction of the atrocities that occur daily in Jalalabad, and yet ultimately doubles an optimistic treatise on the regenerative power of art. Raw and moving, this film is not just a piece of art, or activism, but a complex intertwining of the two. Snow Monkey is Gittoes’ antidote to the erasure of Afghanistan from Australian cultural memory: one that sticks you like one of Steel’s razor blades – long and hard. THE BLACKOUT EXPERIMENTS You have been selected. You arrive at a secret location at a precise time. Once inside, you begin to have disturbing visions. Unspeakable acts befall you – you are restrained, stripped naked, physically and verbally abused, choked and even waterboarded – acts tailored to provoke all your deepest and darkest fears. When it’s all over, you are forever changed, abandoned and left alone to confront the darkness sprung forth from inside you. In 2004, Josh Randall and Kristjan Thor launched Blackout, an immersive theatre production held regularly across the US that stages interactive happenings like those described above. The disorienting experience is never repeated verbatim and often has its participants
coming back again and again — but why? While many find the practice reckless unsafe and call for the events to be banned, The Blackout Experiments follows a number of willing participants through their personal journeys. The film offers a fascinating mix of compelling interviews and actual footage of their sessions, while showcasing our traumatising, therapeutic and addictive conflict with the dark side of human nature.

THE OTHER SIDE (LOUISIANA)
CINEMA 2
The Other Side hits hard, as if Gummo was shot by Terrence Malick. Roberto Minervini’s doc-fiction hybrid is a harrowing-yet-poignant portrait of rural Louisiana that drops viewers into the lives of backwoods inhabitants who seem to have stepped right off the set of Deliverance. The film focuses on drug dealer Mark Kelley and his girlfriend Lisa Allen, who. spend their time shooting up, shooting their mouths off and just plain shooting. Minervini mines the unexpected poetry and comedy of their lives as well as documenting the political ramifications of their downtrodden, hedonistic libertarianism. The Other Side gradually shifts its attention to a group of local militia who are convinced that the feds are on the verge of declaring

martial law stripping their freedoms. Enter a heavily pregnant stripper who shoots up crystal meth before taking to the stage and a Granny who pops Xanax while dancing, then lapses into pill-addled incoherence. By turns tender and disturbing, Minervini paints a portrait of people America wishes to forget and refuses to help. In an election year of divisive, inflammatory rhetoric, it’s hard to imagine a more topical or essential film, shedding light into the dark abyss that’s slowly engulfing contemporary US society. A poetic but hermetic journey into a debauched and dangerous Deep South.... Minervini captures [his subject’s] ongoing breakdown with plenty of compassion and a flair for naturalistic beauty. The best documentaries make you feel as though you are experiencing a certain thing and not merely being taught about that thing. With this film, we become intimate with the man behind Sparklehorse—we’re given just enough light to see the cracks and fissures that marked his time on this earth. And through [the film], his music continues to inspire and will hopefully reach the larger audience that it so assuredly deserves. JOSHUA PICKARD, NOOGA.COM

THE SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF SPARKLEHORSE By those in the know, Mark Linkous (aka Sparklehorse) is regarded as a musical genius. His work has championed by David Lynch, Tom Waits, Thom Yorke and PJ Harvey, and yet he is still relatively unknown outside the industry. A troubled, complex character, Linkous was a sonic maverick who revolutionised the alternative music scene throughout the ‘90s and ’00s. At once gentle and softly-spoken but with a self-destructive streak to match, Linkous was a recovering addict who battled with debilitating depression, substance abuse, paralysis and severe mental illness that would eventually result in his suicide. Creating a poetic journey of Linkous’ life from
birth to death, filmmakers Crowton and Dass navigate the highs and lows of his art in an attempt to unravel the reasons why he was as troubled as he was brilliant. Featuring interviews with indie music luminaries Jonathon Donahue and Grasshopper (Mercury Rev), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), David Lowery (Camper Van Beethoven), Emily Haines (Metric), Adrian Utley (Portishead) and members of Stars of the Lid, the film also pays loving tribute to Sparklehorse’s, beautiful, surreal, off-kilter pop contrasted with dark, distorted ballads and discordant punkrock, taking the viewer on a defiantly surrealist melodic odyssey.

THE SPACE IN BETWEEN: MARINA ABRAMOVIC AND BRAZIL
Bear witness to legendary Serbian artist Marina Abramovic’s latest and most challenging performance piece to date, The Space in Between. Part Herzogian narrative; part spiritual thriller, the film follows Abramovic, recently divorced and broken-hearted as she travels across Brazil in a quest for personal healing and artistic inspiration. Fascinated by the connections between ritual and performance and possibility of transcendence that can occur in the space in between, Abramovic visits with the Brazil’s most esoteric healers, sages, shamans, and sects. She is bathed in earth and is washed clean by a plant healer, fitted with quartz shoes to travel mentally, and she even takes ayahuasca twice, first in what essentially becomes a nightmarish trip and the second offering Abramovic a
more revelatory psychedelic experience. In some of the film’s most remarkable sequences she spends time with John of God, a shaman who practices lobotomies and eye surgeries, gaze averted and the phlegmatic 110-year-old mystic Mae Filhinha. A mustsee for lovers of art, spirituality and the documentary form, the film offers a rare insight into the unprecedented creative approach of one of the most important artists of our time. The artist’s presence is a gift, and nonfiction aficionados will be as pleased as her fans with the chance to witness it. Ruminative and filled with stunning widescreen landscapes, the film stands several aesthetic rungs above HBO’s 2012 doc, The Artist Is Present. SHAUN MALLIN, THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE.

TONY CONRAD: COMPLETELY IN THE PRESENT Vale the great Tony Conrad. Back in April, the world lost a truly visionary soul. He was one of America’s great artists yet, to the world at large, he remains criminally under appreciated. A musician, filmmaker and visual artist, Conrad has been an inimitable, central figure in the US avant-garde since the 1960s. Making art that was challenging often inaccessible but always complex and interesting, Conrad was true iconoclast. A virtuoso of the violin, he played with the likes of John Cale, La Monte Young, and Faust, and is often credited as the founder Just Intonation and Minimalism. Conrad is also famed for directing the groundbreaking experimental film Flicker and worked on the soundtrack for the underground movie Flaming Creatures. Tony
Conrad: Completely in the Present mirrors Conrad’s own playfully radical approach to art-making. Off kilter narration, deafening drones, Pythagorean schematics and non-linear structure artfully combine to reflect the core themes of Tony’s life work. Filmmaker Tyler Hubby who has also followed Conrad camera in hand since the 90s, combines archival footage and interviews from the likes of Moby and Jim O’Rourke to offer a fascinating portrait of the inspirational artist, completed just before he sadly passed away. It’s hard to imagine a better tribute to Tony Conrad than Tyler Hubby’s film...Conrad had an infectious sense of mischief and a disdain for any kind of authority. JASON COFFMAN, DAILY GRINDHOUSE

DIR. DIANNA BARRIE AND RICHARD TUOHY | 2016 | 12 MINS | 16MM A film made in seven cities, and none. Footage from a trailer for the Indonesian film ‘Kereta Api Terakhir’ (The Last Train) found in Lab Laba Laba’s now-lost archives melts into a soup of chemigrammed perforations.
DOT MATRIX
DIR. RICHARD TUOHY | 2013 | 16 MINS | 2 X 16MM A dual 16mm film involving two almost completely overlapping, strobing, flickering images produced by photogramming sheets of dotty paper directly onto raw 16mm film stock. The drama of the film emerges in the overlap of the two projected images of dots.
HAND AND MACHINE
Once inescapably mechanical, the traditional apparatus of cinema has become obsolete and primitive. Yet the handing over of industrial machinery to anti-industrial users is a creative opportunity for re-appraising and re-interpreting the transforming nature of humanity in the age of machines. Today, machine craft is the new handcraft. With this in mind, this program presents seven recent film works from Australian DIY cine-experimentalists Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie.
