WELCOME As purveyors of dissent, subversion, provocation, and civil disobedience, The Sydney Underground Film Festival always have our task cut out for us each year. But we have outdone ourselves this time and have provided only the finest deviancy for your viewing pleasure! We wanted to start the festival with a healthy dose of fun and warped humour, so we are treating you to the Australian premiere of Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. What follows is a diverse range of goodies – from Tobe Hooper’s rarely seen first film from 1969 Eggshells, to James Franco and Ian Old’s Documentary-horror hybrid Francophrenia, to the divisive documentary Wikileaks: Secrets and Lies to the entertaining and shocking documentary Donkey Love!

On Behalf of the Sydney Underground team we hope you enjoy this years celebration of fearlessness, intellect, humour and creativity!

We also have some special underground guests including first public appearance of Mr Doodleburger with a new installment of Summer Bay Slaughter, an expanded cinema performance in Werner Herzog presents Eddie Sharp and a ton of great films, documentaries and short films. We have even created a shorts program (SIN CITY pg, 41) dedicated to showcasing Sydney Indie film talent. So peruse the program at your leisure, but make sure you come spend some time at the festival in September.

JEFF KEEN RETROSPECTIVE DIR. JEFF KEEN \\ 1967-1993 \\ UK \\ 90 MINS Jeff Keen is a legend of avant-garde cinema and fine art. His unique and imaginative filmmaking has outlived the various scenes in which it thrived: the sixties counter-culture, punk and beyond. Making work of immediate power and raw intensity on a range of film stocks. He started filmmaking in the post-war Britain of the late 1950s and continued to work nearly sixty-years later. Keen’s movies emerge from a unique visionary sensibility, an interest in comic books, pop culture, Hollywood ephemera, westerns, melodramas, science fiction and everyday art. This self-taught artist and pioneer of radical British independent filmmaking continues to defy catagorisation. Mixing rapidfire animation, live action, home movies and occasional performance interventions, Keen’s movies offer a visually rich, rapid paced, often loud and lurid, celebration of all that is cinema!

LIVE ON STAGE - JAY KATZ & MISS DEATH 2012 \\ 90 MINS Years before YouTube Jaimie and Aspasia Leonarder aka Jay Katz and Miss Death had started collecting by snail mail a myriad of obscure media that became the foundation of their Mu-Meson Archive. Since the early 90’s they have been presenting compilations of some of the weirdest material that has crossed their path. For the 2012 Sydney Underground Film Festival they will be presenting a 1.5 hour program of the best of the worst. So what in the hell is this lost media.... bizarre adverts and public service announcements, excerpts from vintage educational films guaranteed to send you into fits of hysteria, music clips that never should have been made, film trailers you can’t believe were made, instructional and promotional videos from the 70’s and 80’s made by people that should never have picked up a camera and of course lets not forget the subject of sex with some of the most inappropriate segments ever committed to the screen. Jay Katz and Miss Death will be on hand to guide you through this screening with live commentary. Think Ponderland on steroids and LSD.

DIR. PETER STRICKLAND \\ 2012 \\ USA \\ 90 MINS Director Peter Strickland lifts the curtain on cinematic sound production in this story of hapless audio engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), who finds himself transplanted from the safety of his garden shed to Italy’s cheapest, sleaziest post-production studios to work on a sordid horror film. As the mayhem manufactured for the big screen begins to reflect the world this side of the camera, the exploitative environment of his new job – a huge departure from the nature documentaries he’s used to – begins to take its toll on Gilderoy, sending him into a world of turmoil, and ensuring his grip on reality grows ever more loose. With a soundtrack by revered UK band Broadcast, Berberian Sound Studio is a nostalgic tribute to the giallo films of the 70s. (- MIFF 2012)

KEYHOLE DIR. GUY MADDIN \\ 2012 \\ CANADA \\ 90 MINS For those of you who loved Brand Upon The Brain and My Winnipeg, is in for a treat with Guy Maddin’s long-anticipated new feature film. After a long absence, gangster and father Ulysses Pick (Jason Patric) arrives home to a house haunted with memories, towing the body of a teenaged girl and a bound and gagged young man. His gang waits inside his house, having shot their way past police. There is friction in the ranks. Ulysses, however, is focused on one thing: journeying through the house, room by room, and reaching his wife Hyacinth (Isabella Rossellini) in her bedroom upstairs. The equilibrium of the house has been disturbed and his odyssey eventually becomes an emotional tour, as the ghostly nooks and crannies of the house reveal more about the mysterious Pick family.

DIR. HARMONY KORINE, ALEKSEI FEDORCHENKO, JAN KWIECINSKI \\ 2012 \\ USA.RUS.POL\\ 90 MINS Three visionary filmmakers: Harmony Korine (Trash Humpers, Gummo), Aleksei Fedorchenko (Silent Souls) and Jan Kwiecinski have created three unique stories that provides a different perspective on what the Fourth Dimension is whilst still being thematic woven together a common theme— changing your perspective on life, you can pave your own path to enlightenment. The film opens with Harmony’s hilarious short, The Lotus Community Workshop. In this story Val Kilmer plays a motivational speaker who doesn’t conform to any norms one might expect. In the next chapter, we travel to Russia where Grigory believes that pure intellectual pursuits and his groundbreaking time machine is the key to finding the fourth dimension and true happiness. Despite his convictions, we can see that Grigory is leading an unfulfilled life, and unappreciative of the beauty around him. A sudden turn of events, changes everything. The last chapter takes place in Poland where Pace and his friends are also in search of the Fourth Dimension. They are a group of outcasts partaking in the simple comforts of village life, till an approaching flood threatens them.

EGGSHELLS DIR. TOBE HOOPER \\ 1968 \\ USA \\ 90 MINS Many people think that 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was Tobe Hooper’s feature debut, emerging out of nowhere to rip the genre to shreds and leave audiences reeling. Not so. Four years earlier, Hooper gathered together a ramshackle crew and an eager young cast, and made Eggshells – aka An American Freak Illumination, a surreal, psychedelic drama about University undergraduates sharing a house at the tail-end of the Sixties. For want of a better description, this is a film that defies easy categorization. Lost for 40 years, the film has been immaculately restored by Watchmaker Films and is available for licensing in Australia and New Zealand. “Eggshells makes explicit what many have long assumed — that Hooper’s sense of cinema is the defining characteristic that makes [The Texas Chainsaw Massacre] great. Eggshells is a true 1968 film, psychedelic and political” – Louis Black, founder of SXSW Overflowing with creativity and positivity, full of Godard-like film trickery and playful pop art inflections, populated not only with nubile nudes but a “cryptoembryonic hyper-electric presence”, and scored with the music of Austin psych folk legends Shiva’s Headband, Eggshells is the headiest “head” film you’ve never heard of.

PRESIDENT WOLFMAN DIR. MIKE DAVIS \\ 2012 \\ USA \\ 90 MINS The President of the United States has been bitten by a werewolf and is loose on the streets of Washington on a killing rampage! This comedy/ horror/political satire is also a ‘green movie,’ created entirely out of recycled stock and public domain film footage culled from over one hundred grainy government instructional shorts, classroom education movies, vintage stag reels and features. This labour intensive film was created by non-other than Mike Davis (Sex Galaxy, SUFF 2008), who has made it his life’s ambition to make new films out of old media. His talent for creating wild scrips from reused footage is definately a highly recommended experience!

“Moviemaking hell in The People’s Republic” – Anthony Tao, Beijing Cream

DIR. TANNER KING BARKLOW & GIL KOFMAN \\ 2012 \\ USA/CHINA \\ 90 MINS If you love American Movie or Living in Oblivion, then your going to love this absurd and hilarious documentary about an overeager American striving to make art in a Communist regime. This documentary follows the experience of a Los Angeles filmmaker (Gil Koffman) who finds himself in Xiamen, China trying to direct a thriller, in Chinese, using a translator. He soon discovers that the old adage of making a film three times – in the writing, shooting, and editing – is in fact the opposite in China, where his film is “unmade” three times - in the writing, shooting, and editing - with each subsequent stage of the process even more excruciating and devastating than the one that came before it. Determined however to make his film happen, even under the most adverse conditions, the eager filmmaker can’t even begin to imagine the complications of making a government sanctioned film in Communist China. Aside from a fun and frivolous tale that documents the trials and tribulations of an Angeleno making a film in China, this is also a cautionary tale, redolent with political resonance, about what compromises an artist suffers in order to make their work, and the measures he or she must take in order to sometimes right a wrong.

THE LIFE AND NEAR DEATH OF PATTY SCHEMEL

DIR. P. DAVID EBERSOLE \\ 2011 \\ USA \\ 103 MINS When Nirvana burst onto the national scene in 1991, the music they played spoke directly to a generation that had emerged from the Reagan-Bush years angry and disenfranchised. As grunge took off, the music industry was completely transformed in a way nobody expected... Just three years later, the drug-related deaths of several prominent musicians, capped by the suicide of Kurt Cobain, closed the books on an all too brief era. As the acclaimed drummer of Courtney Love’s seminal rock band Hole, Patty Schemel was right in the middle of all of it. The openly gay woman who always felt “different” never dreamed she would be part of a multiplatinum selling band, touring with legends, or on the cover of Rolling Stone. Or that, thanks to drug addiction, she could lose it all. HIT SO HARD tells the story of Patty’s rise to fame (and nearly fatal fall from it), with no punches pulled... and it’s one hell of a story. Told with insider interviews and stunningly intimate, never-before-seen footage shot by Patty and her friends (Patty was given a Hi-8 camera just before Hole’s infamous Live Through This world tour), HIT SO HARD is not only an all-access backstage pass to the music that shaped a generation, but a harrowing tale of overnight success, the cost of addiction, and ultimately, recovery and redemption.

DESPITE THE GODS DIR. PENNY VOZNIAK \\ 2012 \\ AUST \\ 90 MINS

SATURDAY

In 2008, Jennifer Lynch (daughter of cult director David Lynch) had just returned to the Hollywood fold after spending nearly 15 years in exile since being vilified by press and feminist groups for her debut film, Boxing Helena. Wounded by the harsh response of her critics, Lynch retreated from the public eye. Her second film, Surveillance, had just premiered at Cannes. Bolstered by this success she felt ready to take on more challenging projects. As fate would have it Jennifer meets maverick Indian producer Govind Menon, who invites her to write and direct Hisss. Things go wrong very quickly. Lynch’s western need for order, systems and schedules is completely at odds with the Indian crew’s decidedly non-linear way of working – and lack of experience with films of this scale. But that’s the least of their worries. Unable to control the chaos surrounding her, Lynch slowly and steadily spirals into a depression as her worst fears are realized: this could be the biggest disaster of her career...another Boxing Helena. With uncensored candour, Lynch shares the heart- breaking and at times hilarious experience of being a director at the helm of a sinking ship. The camera becomes her confessional; a record of the madness within and without.

THE SUBSTANCE: ALBERT HOFMANN’S LSD SATURDAY

MAIN 2pm

DIR.MARTIN WITZ \\ 2011 \\ SWITZERLAND \\ 90 MINS In 1943, the year in which the first A-bomb was built, Albert Hofmann discovered LSD, a substance that was to become an A-bomb of the mind. Fractions of a milligram are enough to turn our framework of time and space upside down. The story of a drug - its discovery in the Basle chemistry lab, the first experiments by Albert Hofmann on himself, the 1950s experiments of the psychiatrists, the consciousness researchers, the artists. Could it actually be possible to find a path to the core of our human existence by means of a chemical? Spirituality at the flick of a switch? Do the enigmatic effects of this drug really help us to better understand the human soul? Could LSD be an instrument of contemporary psychiatry? Of modern brain research?

“Taking in everything from Hofmann’s first experience in 1943, through to Millbrook, the military, medicine, psychology and of course the counter culture, The Substance is a fascinating documentary and serious analysis not just about LSD but implicitly the later half of the twentieth century.” - Revelation Film Fest

FRANCOPHRENIA (or: Don’t Kill Me, I Know Where the Baby Is) SATURDAY

DIR. JAMES FRANCO & IAN OLDS \\ 2012 \\ USA \\ 90 MINS June 24, 2010. James Franco (the actor) prepares to film the climactic episode of his stint on the daytime drama General Hospital. “Franco” (his serial-killer character on the show) readies a murderous art installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The day begins like any other for James – hair and makeup, interviews, hugs and autographs for the fans. But as night falls and the shoot begins, James becomes increasingly unhinged as “Franco’s” nefarious work becomes indistinguishable from his own. An experimental narrative comprised of repurposed documentary footage shot behind the scenes at the museum, Francophrenia tells the often comic, frequently horrifying story of the labor behind the television spectacle and the glorification – not to mention the destruction – of the celebrity at its center. DIR.MICHAL KOSOKOWSKI \\ 2011 \\ GERMANY/AUSTRIA \\ 81 MINS Since 1996 film director Michal Kosakowski has been asking people with different backgrounds about their murder fantasies. He offered them the chance to stage their fantasies as short films. The only condition was that they had to act in these films themselves, either as victims or perpetrators. More than a decade later, Kosakowski met these people again to ask them about their emotions during their acts of murder or victimization, and interviewed them about current social topics such as revenge, torture, war, terrorism, media, domestic violence, the death penalty, suicide etc. If someone murdered a person you love, how would you feel about it? Should torture be legalized? Are soldiers murderers? How to define good and evil? Their replies are juxtaposed with the short films based on these ‘non-criminal’ fantasies made accessible to viewers. Zero Killed’ takes the issue one step further: the film deciphers common clichés and patterns of visual violence with the aid of the protagonists’ immediate and direct comments. The result is an unconventional hybrid of feature film and documentary that makes viewers question their personal and social positions concerning ethical and moral values and taboos.

Murder fantasies are lonely affairs.

BAD BRAINS: A BAND IN DC DIR. MANDY STEIN & BEN LOGAN \\ 2012 \\ USA \\ 90 MINS Bad Brains were already unique when they formed in 1977, gaining an immediate fan base in their native Washington DC for their blistering hardcore punk shows. But Bad Brains had already cut their musical teeth playing jazz fusion under the name Mind Power, and their version of punk was already pushing in different directions. While inspiring the likes of youngsters Henry Rollins (Black Flag) and Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat and Fugazi) and countless others, Bad Brains were already a step ahead of their contemporaries and embraced reggae, further adding to their musical palette. The group would go on to influence the likes of Living Colour, Faith No More and Fishbone. Following the band’s career through ups and numerous, often painful, downs, this absorbing documentary from director Mandy Stein (Burning Down the House: the Story of CBGB and Too Tough To Die: A Tribute to Johnny Ramone) and Ben Logan combines scorching live footage with interviews with all the major players and the band, as well as charting their comeback tour and the group’s often-fraught internal relationships. “The film is kinetic, frenetic… and well paced with lots to love for any Bad Brains, punk or music fans. Their tribute is long overdue and we should be thankful that a film recognizing their musical genius, originality and influence exists at all.” IndieWire

THE SHEIK AND I DIR. CAVEH ZAHEDI \\ 2012 \\ USA & UAE \\ 90 MINS Commissioned by a Middle Eastern Biennial to make a film on the theme of “art as a subversive act,” independent filmmaker Caveh Zahedi (I AM A SEX ADDICT) goes overboard. Told that he can do whatever he wants except make fun of the Sheik, who rules the country and finances the Biennial, Zahedi decides to do just that. He turns his camera on the Biennial itself and gleefully presses every culturally sensitive button he can find. But his court jester antics fails to amuse. Zahedi’s film is banned for blasphemy and he is threatened with arrest if he returns to Sharjah.

It starts off as a rite of passage ritual that fathers initiate with their sons and is carried on into their adulthood where men often end-up cheating on their wives with donkeys. Colombians believe that boys should practice having sex with donkeys to prepare themselves for women, that it makes their penises bigger and also that it prevents them from becoming homosexuals. This cultural practice is so widely accepted in Colombia that musicians have written songs about it, an author has written a book about it and there is even a festival that celebrates it.
