Chairman’s Chat Hello all Our editor Felix has requested my Chairman’s chat early this month and I haven’t yet thought of anything much to say. You could chime in at this point with that line from the Ronan Keating song “You say it best, when you say nothing at all”. However, while I can see that me saying nothing at all might be preferable, apparently it’s not an option for Chairman’s chat. So, having not done anything silly to report motorbike-wise of late (at least to the best of my knowledge – others may disagree), and not wanting to go near the Covid issues and the chances of a European motorcycling tour next year (third attempt after cancellations in 2020 and 2021), I thought I would return to one of most motorcyclists pet hates regarding the proliferation of 50mph speed limits everywhere. I mentioned this a while ago after experiencing a number of these seemingly random speed limits when doing the SAM Calendar Challenge, but it has all come flooding back after a recent cross country trip to near Stratford upon Avon when it was noticeable to me that these speed limits are spreading like a rash across the country, yet I haven’t noticed any motoring/motorcycle organisations saying anything or doing anything about it. These limits just seem to appear out of the blue and we all have to accept it – but on what grounds I don’t know. I’ve seen and heard much more debate about the 20 mph limits in town/village centres, but to be honest I don’t really have a problem with those. Probably the people who make these 50mph decisions will play the old faithful ‘safety’ card. Anyone arguing against a safety measure is then branded as some sort of psychopath who can be discounted as a social pariah. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against all speed limits when they are clearly necessary for public safety – in fact I’m part of a group trying to get a 30mph speed limit enforced in my own residential area, but I don’t feel the need to be legally required to comply with an arbitrary speed limit for tenuous safety reasons when riding on an open road that has for many years been subject to only The SAM Observer December 2021

the national speed limit. I think we are all (well most of us!) better placed and capable of making those decisions for ourselves based on the circumstances we find in real time. Of course our motorcycling mindset is somewhat different to that of the law makers. For example, they may see a series of bends as hazards causing great danger to all (assumed incompetent) road users, and therefore mitigation measures (predominantly statutory speed limits) are required, whereas we see the same series of bends as an exciting challenge providing a thrilling ride and great satisfaction when negotiated at a speed determined by ourselves. Is it a lost cause? I don’t know, but on the current trajectory we will soon need to employ a person with a red flag to walk ahead of us. By Jove I feel better now! Have a great Christmas everyone. Cheers for now

SAM Membership Renewal As this is the last chance I have to reach out to members, can I please take this opportunity to remind you all that membership fees will be due this coming January 1st. SAM’s preferred method of payment is by Standing Order (known as STO) which are quick, easy and completely secure as YOU are in TOTAL control. If you have already set up Standing Order, please ignore this message. To set up a Standing Order, simply click on the following link to download and print a copy of the Standing Order Form https://www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com/StandingOrder2020.pdf
Complete the Standing Order form and send it to your bank, or if you have internet banking facilities, use the details on the form to set up a regular payment via your bank’s online services. If payment by Standing Order is not possible, payment by bank transfer (known as BACS) is still acceptable. Our details are;
Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists, Sort Code: 20-92-08, Account No: 10363650.
The cost of renewal remains, yet again, unchanged at £22 for a member and £25 for joint rider/pillion members. Unfortunately, in the current situation, SAM cannot accept payment by cheque or cash. If, for whatever reason, you cannot pay by either the STO or BACS options, please contact me directly and we will find another way. Stay safe,

VOTE OF THANKS Having been involved with SAM promotions for several years now along with wife Jean, I feel compelled to offer up a vote of thanks to Glyn Hill and Dean Harris in recognition of their hard work and sterling efforts in allowing us to "put up our tent" and promote SAM at various and numerous locations. Having had a very small input myself I can appreciate the effort and hard work that goes into this being done alongside other responsibilities within the club such as observing and refresher rides like "hints and tips" etc. Now they have sadly decided to stand down after some 8 years or so of dedication. They inherited an already quite successful promotions program and helped it grow to the levels it is now, they will be rather large boots to fill, both Jean and myself have thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with them in the gazebo talking to potential new members and promoting SAM and the IAM and the usual banter and leg pulling that goes with it. They will be a difficult act to follow. On behalf of Jean & I, and I am sure the other members of the "crew", Thank You Glyn and Dean we have enjoyed your company you will be missed. Hope to see you on club nights. We look forward to helping on promotions along with whoever takes over the mantel if required.

SAM Theory Evenings As most of you know, on the 4th Wednesday evening every month, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering
Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration
Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course. Next theory night meeting will be January 26th 2022

The Treasuer’s Christmas Quiz For those of you who cannot join us on Group Night on the 8th for our Bumper Christmas Quiz, I thought that I would set a little quiz of my own. As many/most of you will be aware, Valentino Rossi – arguably the greatest motorcycle racer of the modern era, has retired. When reviewing his career, even as an avid fan, I did not appreciate the number of records that he has broken, many of which he still holds. There are those who would disagree and say that there are others who may not have achieved as much as Rossi, but took far less time to do it. A prime example of this is Mike Hailwood who only won 76 races, but only took 8 years to achieve it, unlike Rossi, who won 115 races but took 21 years. Or Angel Nieto (90 wins in 16 years) but who, because of his diminutive stature, could only compete in the smaller classes. Equally, there are those who say that Giacomo Agostini is tops with 122 wins in 11 years of competition – true, but don’t forget, back in the early days you could compete in more than one class at the same event and Agostini was on modern MV Agusta’s whilst most of the competition were still on pre-war designed Manx Norton’s, BSA’s or AJS’s (or am I biased?). Whatever your opinion, what is undeniable is that the sport owes Rossi more than Rossi owes the sport! So here goes. Here is my mini-quiz and a tribute to the man himself. Answers to the questions are further on in the magazine; 1)
Only two people have won world championships in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc class. Rossi was one, who was the other?
2)
Only two riders have won world titles in the premier class on both two and four stroke machines. Rossi was one, who was the other?
3)
Only two riders have won back-to-back championships on different makes of bike. Rossi was one, who was the other?
The SAM Observer December 2021

Page 11
4)
Rossi holds the record for the highest number of successive premier class podiums. How many did he achieve?
5)
Rossi has won more races in the premier class than any other rider. How many has he won (hint - Giacomo Agostini is second with 68 wins)?
6)
Rossi holds the record for premier class podiums. How many podiums has he achieved (hint - Jorge Lorenzo is second with 114)?
7)
Rossi has been on the podium more times across all classes of racing than any other rider in the history of Grand Prix racing. How many podiums has he achieved (hint - Giacomo Agostini is second with 159)?
8)
Rossi has the longest winning GP career across all classes. How long is his winning career (hint- Loris Capirossi is second with a GP winning career of 17 years)?
9)
Rossi has competed at more different circuits than any other rider. How many different circuits has he completed at?
10) During his Grand Prix career Rossi has shared the podium with many different riders. How many others have stood with Rossi? (Incidentally, the rider he has stood on the podium with most often is Jorge Lorenzo). I could go on forever, but enough is enough! There are no prizes for this quiz, just the pleasure of appreciating a superb rider, the likes of which, it is doubtful that we will ever see again. Don’t forget to check out the answers further on in the magazine. Have a happy and safe Christmas.

SAM Members Social Ride Charter On 15th November Group Night there was an EGM to consider the proposal for the members to adopt a Social Ride Charter and no longer use the Social Ride Policy. There were 28 members in attendance. We needed 5% of the membership (13) therefore there were sufficient numbers to continue the EGM. Richard Ockelton chaired the EGM. Introduction All SAM members had received an invite to the EGM and details of the proposed Members Social Ride Charter by email prior to the meeting (23/10/21) and this was confirmed by those present. Richard clarified that the Charter would remove the potential for a ‘damages claim’ by a member (or his family) against the Committee members should the rider be involved in an incident on a social ride. Despite their best efforts the Committee could not obtain a clear and precise confirmation of this type of protection from the SAM/IAM insurer or their agent for Social type rides. The aim of the Charter was to take the ownership of the Social Ride Policy from the SAM Committee and for the SAM members to adopt the MSRC as their own Charter and was totally within their control and management. Amendments There had been 4 emailed letters of concern from the membership before 10th November to the Secretary. Richard presented each one. All related to overtaking within the group. Each was discussed. It was agreed that there were exceptions for Overtaking within the group but these were rare. Allowing Overtaking within the group was fraught with potential safety issues and on most social rides not required. Example: The following is an example of permitted overtaking. If someone broke down or felt unwell. Once the rider was checked to be okay the group would continue in a revised order. Other matters were discussed briefly but these did not relate to the MSRC Vote: Resolution 1 Amendment A vote to amend the Charter was taken as to whether to allow overtaking within the group or not allow it. The SAM Observer December 2021
www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com
Page 21
Result: The Amendment was accepted (26 For/2 Against) Vote: Resolution 2 MSRC A vote was taken on whether the membership would adopt the MSCR For / against with the amendment to Overtaking (Resolution 1) Result: The Members Social Ride Charter (MSRC) was accepted Vote: Resolution 3 Election of Members Social Ride Coordinator Richard asked for nominations for this role. Trevor Read was the only nomination. Result: Trevor was unanimously elected by the members Following the voting Martin Drury returned to the chair. Martin highlighted that this was the SAM members Charter and if they felt there was an issue with The Social Ride Charter’s method/operation they should in the first instance discuss their concern with Trevor (MSRC). If a change was necessary a further EGM could be arranged within the scope of the SAM/IAM constitution and the membership decides any necessary change.

Editorial Finally after a lot of language that even the dog blushed at I managed to get all the airbox rubbers on the carburettors, fired her up and….. OH dear, no better and still rough, what is more it wouldn’t come off choke, Perhaps I’m one of the few people to still have a bike with a choke, all the modern bike are not direct injection. Anyway I gave up on the thing, And it is not often that I do, but it was getting beyond my capability and my poor hand could not cope with being stuck in the airbox getting the rubbers off and on again. So I called More Motto who is based in our village. Booked it in with him. So Saturday morning I fired it up and under full choke run it up to him, I could not touch the throttle as it would die, got ½ way there and it died completely… so I arrive in stealth mode, fortunately I had reached the zenith of the hill, Yup we have a hill, 1:200 but when pushing a 360Kg bike it makes a big difference. A week later and she ready, Carbs had been ultrasonic cleaned, balanced, oil and filter change and she’s back, to be fair to her, she is now 21years old and probably the first proper carb clean she’s had. Even managed to temp Mrs Editor to think about riding pillion. Safe Riding

I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will have another great magazine to read Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has all the formatting re-set on it. Please remember that we use Times New Roman as the main font for the magazine at a size 16 so that when the printer converts the A4 pages down to A5 the font looks like a 12.
