Home health care with a personal touch BY ALEX PERRY STAFF WRITER
Suffolk native Andrea Jackson-Bailey, owner of Amazing Grace Home Health Care in Chesapeake, found her calling when she was training for an entirely different career. She was in her first year at the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School when her mother, Tracy Jackson, got sick. Her mother needed fulltime care, so she slowed her schooling and took care of her with the help of family and an aide. “You only have one mother, so I made sure she was taken care of,” Jackson-Bailey said. Her mother died on May 18, 2006, at the age of 41. JacksonBailey went on to graduate from the Apprentice School in 2011, but by that point she was already taking care of her great-
aunt Helen Bryant, who had Alzheimer’s. Bryant will turn 91 this July. “We took care of her, made sure she kept her appointments and had everything she needed,” Jackson-Bailey said. When Jackson-Bailey got hurt at the shipyard and couldn’t continue working there, she realized that she had the experience to start her own home care business. Between years of caregiving and raising her three children Christien, 11, Cayden, 8, and Chloe Bailey, 7, with her husband, Travious Bailey, this wife and mother knows how to treat family. “When you go into a person’s home, you get used to them and start becoming like family to them,” she said. Her employees provide resources such as personal care, companion services, respite care, light household chores,
meal preparation, transportation to errands and more. Each one is thoroughly vetted before they become part of her team. “They’re an example of me,” she said. “If you’re working for me, then you’re an example of who I hire, so you’re a part of me,” she said. Clients are matched with employees who have the expertise to care for their specific needs. If a client has dementia, for example, then he or she will only be paired with someone who has firsthand experience caring for dementia patients. “We’re not just going to send somebody out that just got a certificate,” she said. The business also offers group outings for clients in the same geographic area to go to the mall or see a movie, as it’s sometimes the only chance they have to go somewhere, she said. space in the shopping center that will be dedicated to helping clients with mental behavior issues improve their skills and habits. Jackson-Bailey said she wants her business to keep
growing, both as a community resource and an investment for her family. “This is not just for money,” she said. “I want this to grow for my kids so I can leave it to them.”

Bayview offers variety of providers BY TRACY AGNEW EDITOR
The Bayview Physicians Group believes in the power of diversity, and they demonstrate it in their hiring practices. Among its physicians practicing in multiple specialties and locations in Suffolk, more than half are female. There are an additional 11 advanced practice clinicians, such as nurse practitioners and midwives, who are all female as well. While there are many excellent male providers in the practice as well, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sandy Oliver said it is important to have female providers. “At Bayview Physicians Group, over 50 percent of our physicians and advanced practice providers in Suffolk are female,” Oliver said. “In fact, we have two new female cardiologists and three new primary care physicians and advanced practice providers joining us this
summer in the Suffolk market. Bayview recognizes the important role women play in health care, both in the family and in the profession. We are very proud to have so many women choose Bayview for their health care home.” Oliver said certain specialties, especially primary care, urgent care and obstetrics and gynecology, tend to attract more female providers. “We have just found the trends that there are a lot of female physicians that are choosing those specialties,” she said. But it also makes sense to have women in those specialties, because all OB/GYN patients are women, and women are primarily the ones making decisions for their children and sometimes even their husband when it comes to primary care and urgent care. “Women often make the health care decisions for their family,” Oliver said. “Oftentimes, patients like to go to physicians
or practitioners they are comfortable with.” While many patients are fine with either, many other patients will seek out a female provider. “I think what we seek to do is provide access to physicians and clinicians that provide nice options for patients,” Oliver said. “It is important that there is a variety of demographics for all of us to choose from.” More exciting news is on the horizon for Bayview Physicians Group — it is expanding in two Suffolk locations in the next year. “As the Suffolk community continues to grow, so does Bayview,” Oliver said. “We are excited to be expanding our Lakeview Pediatrics and Family Medicine/NowCare Urgent Care site this year and to open a brand new facility in North Suffolk in 2019. Both projects will improve access to value based care by offering high quality care at much lower costs than hospital affiliated centers.”

Tucker passionate about helping women BY TRACY AGNEW EDITOR
Amy Tucker has been an Edward Jones financial advisor for about two years, and she has found the career to be a rewarding way to help people. She came to Edward Jones, she said, because she saw her grandmother retire well after using an Edward Jones advisor, even though her grandparents had modest means. “I wanted to make sure the advice I could give people
was the very best,” she said. “I’ve seen people retire well with Edward Jones, and that’s what I want for the people I meet and serve. There’s no do-overs in retirement, you only get one chance to get it right.” Tucker is passionate about helping women, especially, take control of their finances. “I’m very passionate about helping women be engaged in their finances,” she said. “A lot of the clients that come to me have been divorced or recently widowed, and
they’re confused and scared. I like to help them find some comfort in those times. It’s important to me to help be the calm in their storm.” Tucker’s grandmother was a widow herself when her grandfather died after 67 years of marriage. Her grandmother was a secretary, and her grandfather drove a Coca-Cola truck. But even though they had humble means, her grandmother was able to remain comfortably retired with no fear of running out of money or being a
burden to her family. Tucker now feels the same sense of responsibility to her family. She is a Gulf War veteran, pastor’s wife, mother of four and grandmother of four. “I’m going to be here for a long time with my grandchildren and children here in the area,” she said. “This is what I love to do.” Tucker also is excited about moving offices soon to a new building in the same complex. Melanie Mitchell worked as an attorney for about a decade before making the switch to becoming an Edward Jones advisor. She said she enjoys having a longer-lasting relationship with clients.
Melanie Mitchell came to Edward Jones about a year ago after about a decade as an attorney. She was doing domestic law work — divorces, child custody and the like — and decided she wanted to have deeper relationships with clients that led them through not only hard times but also the good times. “I wanted to have longer-lasting relationships with clients, through good and bad,” she said. Mitchell is Navy wife and mother of three children, ages 9, 7 and 2. She said children are
a common motivating factor for many people who want not only to retire well but also to leave a lasting impression after they’re gone. “People want to leave a legacy for the things they think are important, whether it’s kids or community organizations or grandkids or church,” Mitchell said. That’s one of the most common misconceptions about financial advisors, Mitchell said. Some people believe they only help people plan for retirement. But they can also help folks save for their kids’ college educations, buy a house or leave behind money when they’re gone.
Mitchell said another misconception is that one has to be rich to have a financial advisor. “You don’t have to be what people would consider wealthy to be in need of help with your finances,” Mitchell said. Financial advisors also aren’t simply stock-pickers, she said. Gwaltney Dental celebrates 35 years FROM STAFF REPORTS SUFFOLK NEWS-HERALD
Gwaltney Dental is a family affair that knows the importance of women in business. The majority of the dental office’s dozen or so staff are women, including one of the doctors. Dr. Steve Gwaltney has been practicing since 1983 after receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. His son, Dr. J. Ryland Gwaltney, earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and also is a member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
The practice has one female dentist, Dr. Whitney Gwaltney, who joined the Gwaltney family practice in 2015 after marrying Dr. Ryland Gwaltney. She graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University and obtained her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a member of the American Dental Association and the Virginia Dental Association. The Gwaltney family has continued to expand with the addition of Ryland and Whitney’s son, Hudson James. The practice started on North Main Street in 1983 and eventually moved to Pruden Boulevard. It boasts many pieces of new technology that allow the doctors to detect problems earlier than they would have otherwise. Guarda: Improving patient outlooks BY ALEX PERRY STAFF WRITER
Dr. Helena Guarda helps people regain normalcy in their lives after harrowing medical experiences. She is a plastic surgeon in Suffolk and affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and Sentara Obici Hospital. She has been practicing for more than 20 years, and her Plastic Surgery Specialists office in Harbour View Boulevard has received patients for 10 years. She received her medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She trained for general and plastic surgeries at Louisiana State University in
New Orleans, where she also had a microvascular fellowship. She said she was inspired as a student by a particularly memorable case, in which a plastic surgeon performed reconstructive surgery on a patient after a cancer operation. “It was truly amazing to see large defects reconstructed and the quality of life and normalcy she brought to patients,” Guarda said in an email. She followed that experience by training with a pioneer of breast reconstructive surgeries, which “allowed women to move beyond the cancer diagnosis and return to their lives,” she said. She chose her location in Harbour View because of its proximity to the growing
population in North Suffolk and health care providers in the area. When it comes to her patients, Guarda said what she enjoys the most is allowing them to be themselves and return to their lives. This applies to cancer patients seeking reconstruction, along with other cosmetic cases after pregnancy or weight loss. “It is always exciting to see them happy with their transformation and their positive outlook on life,” she said. She is supported in her efforts by her husband, three children, six staff members and the Suffolk community. “They are all very supportive of me and my career,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling to have a caring family, staff and community of patients.”

Home care flourishes BY KELLIE ADAMSON STAFF WRITER
Felicia Wilson has always wanted to help people and be an entrepreneur. She finally got the chance after waiting a decade to start her business. Wilson started HLA Home Care almost two years ago after being a patient care aide for a family member. Prior to opening her business, she worked in child care and customer service. “I started thinking about what I’m supposed to be doing in this life,” Wilson said. Currently, Wilson employs 23 personal care aides for her clients. She has been licensed for nine months, and she is happy with how her business is flourishing.
“I got licensed about nine months ago as a personal care aide, and since then it has done well,” Wilson said. “I am still trying to grow we are on a good path.” While the business hasn’t been around for a long time, the journey to get there has been important to Wilson. While preparing to open and get her business running, Wilson was able to learn every piece of the puzzle. “I appreciated learning the business. It took me a year to get through the policy manual,” Wilson said. “I was working during the day, and I would read everything. I was up all night because I couldn’t turn my brain off.” The challenge was for her to realize she knew more than she thought. Beginning the business gave her a lot of doubts, but she was happy
to have learned everything during the process. Now that the business has surpassed the first year, she is happy with her staff and the way things are growing. “I feel like it takes a while, but I have a great staff. Everyone loves their clients, and the clients love their aides,” Wilson said. The decade that she waited to start her business was because she was waiting for her kids to grow up, and now all of them are over 18. Some of her family members, including one child, are involved in her business, and Wilson is happy to involve them in her “family business.” The downfall of owning your own business is that you don’t get much free time, and there have been plenty of occasions where work has interrupted
Wilson’s plans. “I don’t like for any of my people to go without care,” Wilson said. “A lot of people have told me they have never had an agency like this. At least once a week I work as an aide.” As her business grows and expands, Wilson wants to incorporate her prior work in childcare. In five years, Wilson hopes that she will have multiple offices and be able to offer multiple services. Wilson wants to offer childcare and nanny services, because she remembers what it is like to be a young working mother who needed someone to pick her child up from the bus stop or get them on the bus in the morning. “I love helping someone and feeling like I’m making a difference,” Wilson said.

Golden oversees medical practice

After more than two years, Kim Golden has Neurology and Sleep Associates of Suffolk running like a well-oiled machine. Golden is the medical practice’s administrator, and her job is to oversee the management of the business. “I make sure the bills are getting paid, marketing gets done and all of the staff is credentialed,” Golden said. This job is much more than a typical office administrator, because a medical practice has plenty of hoops to jump through on a regular basis. It is Golden’s job to make sure the practice can run smoothly. While management has been Golden’s strong suit, she hasn’t always been a part of the medical field. For 20 years, she was managing law firms as a paralegal.

Her legal background made managing a medical practice a smooth transition, because she had worked personal injury and malpractice cases at previous law offices. “Managing is really the same no matter where you are,” Golden said. “I’ve dealt with physicians before and worked in the medical arena. When I transitioned, having the law background was something I could benefit from.” While the law background was helpful, it was still a bigger challenge to tackle, because health care has more moving pieces. Golden makes sure that her staff works well together and handles normal daily business tasks — paying the bills and signing paychecks — but she also has to juggle health care requirements with HIPPA, Medicare and privacy laws. While she enjoyed working
with law firms, she also enjoys the juggling act required in a health care office. “I like both for different reasons. Law was easier, but I don’t mind all the moving parts with health care,” Golden said. “With both of them, it allows me to help. Someone is always going to be sick or need legal help.” Helping people was always part of Golden’s career plans, and she found that being in a law or medical office gave her the chance to help someone without having to cross over to the clinical side. “I just like helping people, whether it’s the provider, staff or clients. I just always want to be helpful,” Golden said. The legal background has also helped her find a hobby that she is passionate about. Golden also works part-time as a real estate agent with John Wood Realty. “I have a legal background in

closing,” Golden said. “I love finding that first-time homebuyer.” Part of the allure of real estate is that she has the option to be as busy as she wants to be, but for Golden, she would rather be busy doing something than doing nothing. Golden is just eight years away from retirement, but once that day comes she plans to
focus more on real estate. There is never a time when Golden thinks she won’t be working or doing something. Even when she isn’t working, she is busy doing something. She and her husband of 15 years like to work in the yard. Occasionally, they find time to slow down and make the drive down to Hatteras for a beach trip.
