Thinking back through the years, I remember as a child, sitting in our small kitchen under the open window with my sister and mom, JoAnne Patsy Ashby. As the curtains gently blew from the morning breeze, we had our daily devotions. This daily ritual went on to engrave our soul, our hearts, our person and our being. This small gathering as a child became the blueprint of all my making. My mother went on to serve God, the community, Liberty Spring Christian Church and our family selflessly her entire life. I have said to so many that know her that she is my greatest gift from God, and they understand why. I love my mom. —Melody Wilson

CELEBRATING MOM

I would like to recognize a woman who stepped into my life 13 years ago. She is not my birth mom, but if I could imagine a person who would be able to love me like my mom did, it would be her. Her name is Nancy Cocco. My birth mother passed away from ovarian cancer about 14 years ago at a very young age. My stepmom came into my life and recently stood by my side when I was pregnant three years ago. She knew I was way too pregnant to go to Norfolk by myself, so she took the day to be with me. It began to snow and she said she would stay by my side through the delivery that night. She always loves me as if I was her own daughter. She was never able to have children of her own, but I feel so close to her that it’s like she would be my birth mom and vice versa. —Mary Berry

My mom, Doris Collins, is a 5-foot-3-inch, 100pound “farmher” who runs circles around me and who has worked as hard as any man. She and my dad started farming full time in their late 40s. I’ve seen her chase cows and goats and grab baby pigs up to castrate and cut their teeth and tails while the mamas huffed and grunted in the farrowing crates trying to get to her. She drove tractors and trucks hauling equipment and “mechanic-ed” on them too. Farming is stressful, yet she worked alongside her husband into their 80s. She taught my kids to sew and cook and to love animals and country life. She taught me perseverance. At 86, mom lives humbly, does her own yard work, volunteers in her church’s kitchen, remembers those around her with cards, and is always trying to help others. I love her and am so blessed she’s mine! —Linda Brickhouse

My mother, Sharon Kindred Holliman, is the best mother in the world. She is a wife and mother of four beautiful daughters. She raised her children while working full-time as an X-ray technician at Chesapeake General Hospital. Not only is she patient and loving, she is a dedicated member of King’s Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She never feared the diseased or gave up. She immediately began treatments and put all faith in the Lord. She fought continuously through doctor’s appointments and surgeries and ultimately became cancer free. My mother never complained throughout her illness. She instilled this in her children and taught us how to fight and never give up. She is a fearfully and wonderfully made mother. My mother enjoys playing the piano and spending time with her grandchildren. She is the best any child could ever ask for. —Jodi Cuffee My mom, Vivian Dillard, is the best mom ever. I have learned a lot from my mother. My mother had my brother at the age of 12 and me at the age of 17. She has always taught us to never make the mistakes she made and to always follow our dreams. My mother has taught me a lot. She may be hard on me at times, but I know it’s because she wants me to be successful. My mother is my best friend, and she is also my role model. Everything I do is for my mother. I want her to see me become successful, and I just want to make her proud. My mother was a single mother to three children. I have watched her raise us by herself. There have been nights when my mother will feed us and she would not eat because she wanted to make sure we were fed. I love my mother so much, and I just want to make her proud, because she has always been there for me as a friend and mother. I just want her to know I really appreciate her and love her so much.

My mom, Debra Mitchum, is beautiful inside and out. My boys — her grandchildren — say she is the best cook ever, and she is! Mom is a loving wife of more than 50 years to my dad, a dedicated, unconditional loving mother and very giving. My mother is in the choir at Holland Baptist Church and also a Sunday school teacher there. Mom has great knowledge to share and is always willing to help or support if needed. —Jennifer Orberson

CELEBRATING MOM

Our mom, Deborah Parker, is and always has been a wonderful, strong, dedicated, loving woman of God. She is a mother of seven, a grandmother of nine and a great-grandmother of two that she truly loves. Even after losing a son 13 years ago to a senseless murder, she still remained humble and strong. When it comes to being a blessing to others, she will give her last without expecting anything in return. She is a true woman of God that loves hard with a big heart. We love you, Ma! —Tina Ralph

My mother, Braiden Scoggins, is very special. Although every child would say the same for their mother, mine stands out from them all. When I was a little girl, my mom was going through a tough time being a single mom with absolutely no support system or college degree. Though times were certainly hard, she always made sure there was food on the table and clothes on our backs. I don’t ever remember my childhood being one of hardships, because I remember it as being a happy one. My mom didn’t have the best job, but she always worked 10 times harder than others and somehow kept a smile on her face. Never once did I ever see her break down due to her strong heart and bravery. Now, she is a mother of two with an amazing husband and so dedicated. Through big school projects, heartbreaks and tough times, she is always there late at night to help me. To me this is not only an amazing mother, but an even more extraordinary woman. — Breanna Lala

I am writing to let you know about my sister, Robin Starling. We lost our mother nine years ago in July, which took a toll on all of us. I have two children, Karley and Carson, and my sister took over and became a grandmother figure to them. Although she has a daughter herself, she never forgets her niece and nephew. My sister even acts as a mother figure to me and keeps me straight. Robin calls me just about every morning on her way to work to get the latest and greatest on my kids and offers advice on what we should do about certain situations, because she has had a teenager and not a lot has changed. She always tries to be at their sporting events, fundraisers, etc. to support them. I really don’t know what we would do without her. We hope we are making our mother proud by keeping our family so close. I just want to honor my sister to let her know how greatly appreciated she is. Although my mother is gone, I am so lucky to have my sister here to give my children and me that grandmother/motherly advice that we all need. My mom, Diane Smith, is also known to her grandchildren as Me-Ma. To describe my mom is less than 150 words is a challenge. My mom is a caring, loving, straight-to-the-point woman who exhibits Christ-like characteristics. Her zeal for life and spending time with her family epitomizes the woman I continue to desire to be. She is the World’s Best Mom in my book. Her husband and grandchildren constantly praise her because she is an awesome and wonderful caregiver to her parents! My brother and I are blessed to have the physical presence of our mom, and as each day goes by, we are eternally grateful to have a supportive mom who continues to be even more present in our lives. —Tasha Smith

My mom, Cindy Tumilty, is the best mom. She has always been there for me whenever I needed her. Oftentimes, she puts my wants and need before her own to make sure that I’m happy and taken care of. She is the sweetest and most generous person I know. Now that I am in college, I realize just how much she has impacted my life in a positive way. My mom is definitely my role model. I hope that someday I can be the woman that she is. She may think I take her for granted at times, but I want her to know that I love her so much and would be lost without her. I know that without her love, guidance and support, I would not be the young woman I am today. For that mom, I would like to say thank you and Happy Mother’s Day. —Victoria Tumilty

CELEBRATING MOM

My name is Corey Euken. I am 30 years old, and cannot walk or talk, so I’m having my stepdad write this for me, so all of you can know just how special my mom, Debi Wagner, is to me and our family. She takes great care of me each and every day and always knows how to meet all of my needs. She is loving, caring, compassionate and nurturing. When my brother and I were younger, and my mom was single, she would work two and sometimes three jobs to make sure we always had everything we needed. Just wanted to say thank you, Mom, for all the sacrifices and love you have shown to me and my brother throughout the years! You are an angel on earth, and I would have never made it without you! We all love you very much! —Corey, Kendall and Buddy

There are a lot of adjectives that describe our mom, Sarah Jean Walden, but the one that stands out the most is “remarkable.” In a selfish world, she loves unconditionally and gives unselfishly to her family and friends and never expects anything in return. She is loved by her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She touches so many lives and has accomplished so much during her lifetime. She’s soft but strong, caring and compassionate. She’s the best support system imaginable, of wise counsel and a great source of advice. There could never be anything that we could say or do to equal all the love and gratitude that we feel for her. If we could give her the world, we would. We treasure her every day, and it fills us with pride and joy to have her as our mother. —Marita Walden Cotton, Pamela Walden and Karen Walden Stephens
