Family tow company still pulls through BY ALEX PERRY STAFF WRITER

Todd Greene learned to operate his first tow truck when he was 15. He recalled the 1948 GMC truck his late father, Robert, turned into a wrecker back in 1958 for the Union 76 gas station on West Norfolk Road in Portsmouth. He learned the skills he uses to this day from those rides with his father behind the wheel, he said. His father taught him to be careful not to damage a vehicle further when you’re towing, no matter how damaged it may already be, he said. “My father’s motto was to be nice to everybody and treat someone how you would want to be treated,” the 55-year-old

said. “That’s what I try to do.” Todd Greene and his 78-year-old mother, Jeanine Greene, co-own Greene’s Wrecker Service and Motor Sales at 3834 Whaleyville Blvd. in Suffolk, where a small, tight-knit family handles a 150mile towing radius in Tidewater. Cars are also purchased from auction and repaired and refurbished for resale. Everyone working there is related in one way or another, Todd Greene said. His mother stays busy on the property and running errands despite her radiation treatments for breast cancer. Her younger sister, Sharon Toland, 58, works in the office, while a mischievous tortoiseshell cat named Repo roams and scratches for See TOW, 4

Bunny’s Family Restaurant manager Nell Evans and her daughter, Jenell Miller, beside a picture of when it opened at 1901 Wilroy Road in the early 1970s.

A second generation of Bunny’s BY ALEX PERRY STAFF WRITER

The restaurant life for Nell Evans started when her mother, Elizabeth Hingerty, opened one of her own in Suffolk. Bunny’s Family Restaurant was eventually relocated to its 1901 Wilroy Road address in the early 1970s, when the old building was demolished to make way for highway construction. Hingerty’s restaurant took its name from a nickname she picked up while working as a waitress in the city for

years, Evans said. Hingerty had pet bunnies and would blame any tardiness she had on the animals. “She always gave the excuse that one of the rabbits got out, so they nicknamed her ‘Bunny,’” Evans said. “Everybody in Suffolk knew her as Bunny.” Evans worked in the kitchen while her mother worked in the front of the house. She recalled how busy the place could get in those days, especially for the Friday and Saturday buffets. See BUNNY'S, 4

“Everybody liked the food, and we catered to all types of people,” she said. After Hingerty died in 2001, the business continued under Evans with the help of her husband, her son, Eddie Lee, 51, and her daughter, Jenell Miller. Lee oversees the Evans Farms Fresh Produce fields next to the restaurant, and Miller is the chef. “The whole family is in it together, in the long run,” Evans said. The old-fashioned menu offers breakfast favorites in the morning like hot cakes, bacon, sausage and eggs any way you like, she said. Waitresses serve lunch and dinner favorites including fried chicken and burgers paired with produce from the fields next door. Tomatoes, squash, green beans and other seasonal vegetables are served in the summer, and greens like collards and broccoli can be had in the winter. “Any vegetable you can name, we have on our menu,” Evans said. Miller cooks everything to order with their own meats and spices. She seasons ham hocks, grills fresh patties of ground beef and

prepares specials like ham and cabbage for Tuesdays and meatloaf for Wednesdays. Their Brunswick stew is also a hot commodity, Miller said. “I can’t keep it,” she said. “They’re buying it by the quarts.” Miller has been cooking for the restaurant for 28 years, not including time she spent there while she was a student at John Yeates High School, she said. She works six days a week with skills she learned from her mother. “She’s a better cook than me, I think,” Evans said. Miller says she loves to cook, and despite some natural friction with family from time to time, they keep on cooking. “We get on each other’s nerves every now and then, but what moms and daughters don’t?” she said. The restaurant started decades ago when there were only a handful of others in the area, she said, and they’re still serving regular customers good, country cooking. “We’re still here and we’re still trying it,” she said.

Robert Beale started Windsor Fire Extinguisher Services LLC after getting laid off from International Paper.

Beale is one-man firefighting team BY TRACY AGNEW NEWS EDITOR

Robert Beale never thought about owning his own business until he got laid off from International Paper when the plant closed about seven years ago. “When they closed, I had to do something,” said Beale, who had worked for the paper mill for 40 years. Age 59 at the time, Beale soon found that work was hard to come by for a man of his age, so he decided to make his own

work. “I took what I had learned working for the mill and the licenses I had working for the mill and took that and put it to work.” Beale, an industrial pipefitter by trade, started Windsor Fire Extinguisher Service LLC. One of his first contracts landed him right back at the paper mill, where he took a year-long independent contract providing fire protection. He sought out other work by literally See FIREFIGHTING, 7

Family experience informed business FROM STAFF REPORTS SUFFOLK NEWS-HERALD

Many people don’t understand how a home care company can benefit their lives. Since she founded Home Sweet Home Care Inc. in 2004, Shirley McGee has worked diligently to educate the public (and even doctors) about non-medical care and its benefits. McGee said the vast majority of older adults want to age in place and that nonmedical care often makes that possible. Non-medical care providers help with meal preparation and clean up, laundry, grooming and bathing and even transportation to doctor appointments. Home care assistants can also run errands to the pharmacy, take care of grocery shopping and do all kinds of tasks to help with daily life. Taking advantage of a service like that

offered by Home Sweet Home does not mean signing a contract for a set number of hours or making a commitment, like a lease, McGee said. New clients simply establish a relationship with the company, so they have it as a resource when they need it. Then clients set the schedule. Non-medical care providers, for instance, can be a resource when family caregivers are stretched too thin by the demands of taking care of their aging relatives. Sometimes that can mean simply taking over a few hours of the caregivers’ responsibilities once or twice a week — helping with laundry, preparing meals, cleaning the house, taking the clients to appointments or shopping, for instance. One of the major mistakes family caregivers make is not giving themselves a See FAMILY, 7

going door-to-door — “farm to farm and business to business,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to land some fair-sized contracts,” he said. He does fire protection services for all of Isle of Wight County’s buildings as well as Green Mountain Coffee’s large coffee-processing facility. “That’s been good that they’ve decided to use local people,” he said. He works many special events, including the Isle of Wight County Fair, where he inspects vendors who are cooking on site and makes sure all fire extinguishers on site are ready for the job, should they be needed. Beale said he has improved his business by providing good, prompt service to earn referrals from his customers.

‘If I need a day off, I can take a day off, and I schedule my work accordingly.’ Robert Beale OWNER

“You have your ups and downs,” he said. “You may lose a job today, but then you may pick up two small jobs tomorrow that make up for what you lost today.” Beale, 67, said he enjoys what he’s doing, and he doesn’t intend to retire. “If I need a day off, I can take a day off, and I schedule my work accordingly,” he said. In addition to fire extinguishers, the business also works on exhaust and fan systems

in restaurants, fire and security alarms, sprinkler systems and backflow prevention. Beale covers from Murfreesboro, N.C., north to Waverly and east to the James River Bridge and even into Chesapeake. “It’s just a small business, but I cover a fair amount of area,” he said. Although Beale has no official employees, his family is very involved in the business. His wife, Theresa Beale, does office work. His daughter and son-in-law, Courtney and Mike Roggmann, help whenever Beale needs something done involving computers. “My daughter and son-in-law have been a real asset, because they know what to do with computers,” he said. “My family is a good portion of my business. They’ve been very supportive in what I’ve done.”

chance for breaks. Older adults who want to help their family caregivers can help ensure their loved ones take care of themselves, too, by establishing a relationship with a home care company they can trust. Hiring an in-home non-medical care provider can free the clients and their families so they can spend more quality together, instead of having that time consumed by daily tasks. McGee said it’s important to look for a company with a good reputation when pursuing such a relationship. “It’s important to have the right people caring for you, because it’s not easy getting older,” she said. “Things change, and those caring for you must have a well-rounded knowledge of the physical and mental changes that can happen. We make sure

our employees have experience with the elderly, and we offer them ongoing training and education. We also do criminal background checks on every employee, handle all taxes and liability and have other caregivers who can help you if there is a call-out. “Being a family caregiver is demanding and often difficult,” she added. “We’re here to help in any way we can. It is also why we provide a free educational resource to the public through our website. Anyone can sign up for the Family Caregiver Training and take advantage of the tutorials, videos, and tips to help them understand and better care for an older adult.” “I have walked in the shoes of a caregiver years ago, when my mom was still here, and I truly do want to help others facing that situation,” she said.

Raising money via crowdfunding Fundraising is one of the primary ways charitable organizations meet their operating costs and fund their missions. Fundraising has come a long way since the days of direct mailers, cold calls and door-to-door solicitations. It has also become a viable way to get others to help fund your business dream. According to the charitable giving resource Fundable, crowdfunding is a method of raising capital through the collective efforts of different individuals — family, customers, friends or private investors. This method of fundraising taps into a large pool of people, and funds often come by way of many small donations, rather than a few large contributions. Crowdfunding and social media go

hand-in-hand. Individuals tasked with crowdfunding can use social media platforms to quickly and easily increase their exposure. The ability to streamline fundraising efforts is something many people find appealing about crowdfunding. Each of the steps involved in advertising and collecting funds takes place on one online platform. Many people turn to crowdfunding to raise money for medical bills, nonprofits and disaster relief charities. But the opportunities are endless. While crowdfunding sites are a key way to raise capital, users should recognize that some of these services cost money. Many involve plans under See CROWDFUNDING, 10

Nell and Larry Neal are the owners of the local Home Instead Senior Care franchise. They have a careful hiring process they believe has allowed them to give good service.

Neals use their own service at Home Instead BY TRACY AGNEW NEWS EDITOR

Larry and Nell Neal started Home Instead Senior Care in March 2009 and have been in love with it ever since. “We’re just blessed to be on this journey together,” said Nell Neal. The two have been married for 36 years. Nell and Larry Neal are natives of the area and had careers in the construction field for 25 and 30 years, respectively. But when those careers ended, they were left searching for their next calling. He started a small commercial cleaning company, which he still owns. But they also wanted something more. “We wanted something we could do together and give back to the community,” she said. Home Instead Inc. was founded by Paul and Lori Hogan in Omaha, Neb., in 1994. Paul Hogan’s experience with his family caring for his grandmother led

him to realize many families could use the services of an in-home caregiver, according to the Home Instead website. The company now has about 1,100 franchises in 14 countries, the Neals said. Theirs is one of them. The two were searching for opportunities when they came across Home Instead. “What drew us to the company was the core values,” Nell Neal said. The company’s first core value is that it puts God first. “That lined up with our personal core values,” she said. “After much prayer and research and prayer and prayer and prayer, we felt this was a good opportunity.” The franchise currently has eight fulltime staff, two part-time nurses and 120 caregivers. It has about 75 to 80 clients. The Neals are personally involved in the operation of their franchise. They See NEALS, 10

Address that stress for health

The American Institute of Stress notes that various emotional and physical disorders have been linked to stress. Such disorders include depression, stroke, hypertension and anxiety, among others. In its 2015 Stress in America survey, the American Psychological Association found that money, work and family responsibilities are the three most common stressors. While the symptoms of stress are uncomfortable and potentially very dangerous, the APA notes that such indicators also serve as a warning from the body that it needs maintenance and extra care. Following are some of the ways the body might be telling adults to step back and make an effort to relieve stress. 4Headaches, muscle tension, neck or back pain: Some headaches or aches and pains might be mere nuisances or indicative of issues unrelated to stress. But when such symptoms are accompanied by stress, this could be the body’s way of alerting men and women that the stress is approaching unhealthy levels. The AIS notes that when a person is under stress, his or her muscles tense up. The contraction of these muscles for extended periods of time can trigger tension headaches and migraines, among other things. 4Chest pains and/or rapid heartbeat: Chest pains and rapid heartbeat may indicate various problems, including stress. This happens when the body is stressed, because stress causes the nervous system to signal the adrenal glands to release hormones that make the heart beat faster and increase blood pressure.

4Difficulty falling or staying asleep: Men and women who are feeling stressed out and also experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep should consult their physicians about ways to alleviate that stress. When strategies to alleviate stress are successful, adults should be able to return to normal, healthy sleeping patterns. 4Increased frequency of colds: Stress can attack the body’s immune system, making it increasingly vulnerable to colds. The AIS also notes that a weakened immune system also makes the body more susceptible to additional viral disorders, including herpes, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. 4Loss of appetite or overeating: Stress can affect the gastrointestinal system in various ways, including influencing appetite. While not all problems with appetite are indicative of a body that is overstressed, stress can prompt some people to eat much more than they normally do, while others may eat considerably less than they normally would. 4Diarrhea or constipation: Another indicator that stress is compromising the gastrointestinal system is diarrhea or constipation. Again, while these problems are not exclusive to sufferers of stress, when a person is under stress, this can affect which nutrients the body can successfully absorb and how quickly food is metabolized. This can cause some people to experience diarrhea, while others may be constipated. — Metro Creative Services
