f you are liquidating a business, selling off an estate or raising money for a good cause, then consider using an auctioneer. Auctions are fun for the participants and host. It is a fantastic way to make a profit. When searching for an auctioneer, there are a few things to consider. Auctioneers specialize in auction types, so look for the right one to fit your needs. Many auctions are personalitydriven events, so be sure you select an auctioneer who is gregarious and personable. This person must have the gift of speech, a touch of humor and the ability to develop a rapport with the audience. The success of your auction will depend on how much the auctioneer can establish a relationship with the audience. After all, he will entice bidders to par-

ticipate. A great auctioneer can make a sale or entice people to bid on unattractive items. Look for an auctioneer at an auction house. The best auctioneers are independent contractors with skills and a long track record of experience. You can also utilize the internet or your local newspaper to find a qualified auctioneer. Most newspapers have an auction section in their advertising section. If you use the internet, be sure to visit the website of a certified institution. Not every site lists credentialed auctioneers. If you’ve exhausted these sources, contact the National Auctioneers Association or visit their website, www.auctioneers. org. Many auctioneers belong to professional organizations such as the Certified Auctioneers Institute, or CAI. By hiring an auctioneer with this certification, you can know

When speaking to candidates, be sure to ask for references and work history. Verify licensing and check that they are actively working auction events. Once you have a list of finalists, attend an auction and watch them perform. Pay attention to how they handle attendees and the pacing of the event. Take notes on each auctioneer. Once you have narrowed your list to one or two candidates, perform a background check and obtain reliable references. After you have completed this process, you can relax and have fun alongside the participants of your event. The right auctioneer will not only be entertaining, he or she will get the job done with ease.

amilies who send their children to independent schools say they are looking for individual attention, small classes, teacher excellence, and high academic standards. Simply put, they want the best for their sons and daughters and are willing and able to pay for it. The U.S. Department of Education’s National Educational Longitudinal Study confirms that larger percentages of students in independent schools are enrolled in advanced courses than in public schools. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, NAIS students: 4Do twice as much homework as their counterparts; 4Watch only two-thirds as much television; 4Are significantly more likely to participate in varsity or intramural sports; and

4Are more likely to agree that students and teachers get along well, discipline is fair, and teaching is good. But choosing the right school from the many available can be a daunting task. NAIS recommends that before you visit your first school, you should sit down with your family and determine your “ideal” educational community: 4Is it small or large? 4Traditional or progressive? 4What special programs (arts, sports, computers) does it offer? 4Is a diverse school community important to you and your family? 4Does your child have special needs or interests? After determining your needs and reviewing the options available, you are ready to start narrowing your choices. If you haven’t done so already, contact each potential school for ma-

NAIS recommends asking the following questions as you look at each school’s materials: 4Is the school accredited and by whom? 4What is the school’s mission and does its philosophy appeal to you? 4Does the school have a special or particular educational focus? 4Are academics rigorous? 4Is the environment competitive? Nurturing? Are there high expectations? 4Does the school meet your child’s needs? 4How large is the school and its student body? 4Where is the school located and what are your transportation options? 4What variety of learning

experiences are available at the school — in class, on the playing field, in extracurricular activities, and in community service? Are extracurricular activities obligatory? 4Does the school seem to have a diverse student body and faculty? 4Do the school materials discuss parental involvement? 4For high schools, what are the graduation requirements? What percentage of students enter colleges, and what kind of colleges do they attend? 4Is college counseling effective? (Look at rates at which school grads achieve their first and second college choices.) 4What is the tuition and how flexible are the school’s financing options? 4What is the school’s application process? Are deadlines drawing near? On your own, write down ad-

ditional questions and notes. Consider starting one sheet of paper per school. That way, you will be able to easily look up questions that are pertinent to the school you are visiting. Choosing the right school for your child is likely the most important single decision you might make in terms of setting the proper path and direction for life: A little preparation and research on the part of parents will go a long way toward making the choice simpler.

ny homeowner will tell you that plumbing issues are a nightmare. They can become a major problem in old or modern houses. Sometimes, you can use a plunger or liquid product to unclog a drain. But if you are experiencing chronic problems, you will need to call a professional. The issues may be far bigger than you can handle on your own. A professional plumber can determine if your septic system or other equipment needs to be serviced or replaced. A competent, experienced professional will ensure your house stays comfortable and sanitary. Here are some tips to help you find the best plumber. CHOOSE AHEAD OF TIME CMYK

HOW TO GUIDE

SUFFOLK NEWS-HERALD

Choose a plumber

Start your search now, before something bad happens. Waiting until you have an urgent need is a common mistake. Emergencies leave you open to dealing with unscrupulous people. There is also a good chance that you will pay too much for their services. As soon as you can, begin your search for a plumber to service your home. ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS Friends and family members may be able to refer you to an excellent professional. Good word-of-mouth recommendations are the best way to find excellent service. Look for people in your local area. Sometimes, plumbers may charge extra if you are not in their designated service region.

SEARCH ONLINE Consider looking online for a good plumber. Just remember that information on the internet is not always correct. Be mindful of who is giving a stellar customer review. Look closely for complaints about shoddy work or high prices. Dissatisfied customers are more likely to talk about their experiences. Of course, one person’s bad experience may not accurately reflect what you can expect. Look for multiple reports from different sources before drawing a conclusion. COMPARE PRICES Cost should always play a role in picking a plumber. Contact at least three different plumbers to get an idea of the differences in labor and material costs. They should be able to

provide you with estimates for different services. It is vital that you find a professional who knows what he is doing. Whatever you save up front could turn into extra expenses down the road if the work isn’t done correctly. ASK QUESTIONS Asking questions is the best way to form expectations. Not only should you understand labor rates, but you should also know if there are any guarantees on work. Find out how long the plumber has been in business and where he received his training. The bottom line is that you need to hire someone who cares about their customers and their homes. Conducting a thorough search before an emergency will prevent you from being disappointed.

ith the ravages and power outages of Superstorm Sandy still fresh in their minds, many homeowners will be considering adding automatic standby generators to protect their homes in the event of extended power outages. Experts encourage homeowners to have an emergency power plan in place so they can stay put during prolonged power outages if not instructed to evacuate. When severe weather strikes, it may take a utility company days or even weeks to restore power. Many folks in Suffolk and the rest of Hampton Roads remember well from Hurricane Isabel what it’s like to be without power for weeks during the summer. A permanent standby generator can provide automatic, whole-home power during extended outages.

When the power shuts off from the utility, a standby generator automatically turns on and can power all the major systems and appliances in your home. A standby generator is fully automatic and permanently installed outside with a direct connection to the home’s electrical system, similar to a central air-conditioning unit. It runs on propane or natural gas and is connected to the home’s fuel lines, meaning the homeowner does not have to be physically present to start up the generator and fuel it. A standby generator works in tandem with an automatic transfer switch that continuously monitors utility power. When power is lost from the utility, the switch automatically transfers the electrical load to the standby generator. The transfer of power to the standby generator usually takes 10 seconds or less,

HOW TO GUIDE

FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2016 | 5

Choose a standby generator and the homeowner does not need to be present during the process. Standby generators can provide up to 20,000 watts of electricity. These are wired into the electrical system of your home and can keep several electrical appliances operating at once, depending on generator size. Permanent generators typically run on propane. Prior to purchasing an automatic standby generator, consumers should fully investigate their options and consult with a local power professional. Key features to consider include: a commercial-grade engine that provides clean, consistent power and can handle heavy loads; a noncorrosive enclosure (especially in areas with salt water); and a minimum five-year warranty. Do not connect the generator to an electrical system without a transfer switch that disconnects

the home from the power line and connects to the generator. The wiring system must be isolated from the power lines to prevent the generator from feeding electricity back into the power line. This protects linemen who may be working to

restore your service. A generator installation is not a do-it-yourself project. You’ll need to hire a professional electrician to make sure the job is done right, to make sure it’s safe and to make sure the necessary permits have been secured. CMYK

nyone who has experienced a car accident knows it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life

for most people. Once you have a list of names, research each shop on the internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But

keep in mind that no business has a 100-percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment.

If your social network doesn’t have good recommendations, consult the newspaper, advertising supplements or the internet. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone. Describe the problem and listen for the response. If the person seems knowledgeable and friendly, keep that shop on the list. However, if the person seems rushed and uninterested, it can mean the shop is very busy. It might also have poor customer service. Eliminate them from your list. When you have chosen an auto body shop, visit their store. Check for prices, certifications and guarantees. You usually get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean subpar work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager

or owner for references before they work on your car. They should have previous satisfied customers you can contact. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Quality auto body shops should be able to complete an entire job onsite. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

t’s tough to imagine life without electricity. Adjusting the thermostat, flipping the light switch and turning on the heat would be futile without an uninterrupted supply of power. Problems with the electrical system and wiring in a home are not problems for average people to solve. Trained professionals can skillfully and safely rewire a home or connect a lighting system. Electricity can cause grave injury or even death if handled improperly. There is also the real possibility of electrical fire if the repair is done improperly. It is wise to hire a licensed electrician to make any electrical repairs. Consider these tips when you are searching for a qualified, licensed electrician for your project: 4Don’t postpone a repair. Flickering lights or an outlet that

doesn’t work are signs. As soon as you suspect a problem, ask your family and friends to recommend an experienced electrician. You can also look online for qualified professionals. 4Contact three or four electricians and request information about their licenses, availability, experience and rates. 4Any electrician who cannot provide references and a current license should not be considered. A reliable and experienced electrician will maintain a current license. 4Ask for references from recently completed projects. A reputable electrician will understand and gladly comply. If they cannot provide references, they may do substandard work or not have recent experience. 4Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints. Even the best electrician will have a disgruntled customer or

two, but if there are complaints, find out how those complaints were resolved. 4Get estimates from two or three electricians. They should come to your home and speak to you about the job. These estimates will allow you to compare rates and make an assessment of their appearance and work habits. 4Get all estimates in writing. Read over the estimates to ensure that everything is covered, including a description of the job to be performed, total cost, time for completion, insurance coverage and cleanup. Ask questions and get answers in writing before you sign a contract or agreement. Ask about guarantees and warranties. 4Don’t make a decision based solely on price. The electrical system in your home is far too important for you to choose simply by price.

4If you are undecided, you can try a potential electrician by hiring him for a small project first.

If you follow these suggestions, you will likely find the best electrician for your repair or remodeling project. CMYK

et groomers are essential for anyone who owns a dog or cat. Groomers can provide a bath or clip nails at critical times. Pet groomers can also help you maintain the health of your dog or cat. They are usually the first people to spot a skin disease. Groomers also clip hair around eyes and check your pet’s ears for mites. Follow these tips to find the best pet groomer for your fur baby. REFERRALS Referrals are a large part of any business. Most groomers make an extra effort to make sure their customers are satisfied. If you are coming to a groomer via a recommendation, tell the person. The groomer will be happy to know their business has a great reputation. their services. Groomers are most often found in large pet stores, veterinary offices and stand-alone storefronts. Make a list of groomers located near your home or business. You will be dropping your pet off and picking it up later in the day. VISIT AND ASK QUESTIONS Visit groomers on your list and inspect their shops. Check for cleanliness and professionalism. The service area should smell fresh and clean. The pet waiting room should also be free from debris and chemicals. Observe how the groomer and staff interact with animals and customers. Nothing can be more difficult than a slick, wiggly pet. But a groomer should be gentle. He should never yell or jerk a pet around. Inquire about their services. Do they groom both cats and dogs? Is there a separate waiting area

HOW TO GUIDE

SUFFOLK NEWS-HERALD

Choose a pet groomer for the two types of pets? Can you choose the shampoo? Are nail clippings and anal gland expressions part of the package, or do these services cost extra? Some groomers do not perform these services. It’s important to know what you can expect. Also, be sure to ask about medical services. What happens if your pet has an emergency while they are at the groomer? Does the groomer have a relationship with a local veterinarian? Another option is a mobile pet groomer. These people have vans with everything they need to groom your pet in front of your house. If traveling is inconvenient, mobile pet groomers might be an option for you. BRINGING YOUR PET Prior to scheduling an appointment, bring your pet to the office. Observe the relation-

ship between your pet and the groomer. Are they comfortable with each other? Of course, you know your pet the best. Tell your groomer if your dog is sensitive to hav-

ing its nails trimmed or ears cleaned. Some dogs are terrified of the hair dryer. Mentioning it to your groomer will put everyone at ease.

ost people think of their pets as members of their family. In fact, some people even refer to them as fur children. That’s why finding a veterinarian or veterinary clinic is so important. You need to find qualified care to ensure the long-term health of your pet. But in a difficult economy, pet care might get overlooked. Routine care might even seem unnecessary. After all, don’t humans skip medical and dental check-ups if they seem like they’re in good shape? Unfortunately, pets age faster than human beings. Their bodies and internal systems can change rapidly, sometimes in a matter of a few months. When you take your pet to his doctor regularly, you can catch an illness in its beginning stages. As you know, catching a disease early can save you hundreds or

thousands of dollars. Routine veterinary care will help ensure your pet lives a long and happy life. Choosing a good veterinarian that suits you and your pet can seem like a difficult task. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find a professional that will give your pet the best care possible.

ASK FOR REFERRALS Your family and friends may know a good veterinarian. Listen to their experiences with a critical ear. You need to find someone who is professional, compassionate and timely. Ask specific questions, such as whether the clinic staff likes animals. Do they respond to concerns in a timely manner? Research veterinary and veterinarian clinics on the internet. Make a list of prospective candidates, and then check with

the Better Business Bureau in your state to see if there have been any complaints against these professionals. How were the complaints resolved? Some people need extra services, such as daycare, boarding facilities and pet training. You may also need to have your pet groomed. Find out if the prospective veterinary clinic provides these services.

MAKE A VISIT After making a list of choices, visit the veterinary office or clinic. Call ahead and request a tour of facilities. The staff should have the time to answer your questions. You should see a clean and well-maintained office. Observe how the staff interacts with clients and pets. Are they warm toward the animals and owners? The employees should have an affinity for

animals. Sit in the waiting area and introduce yourself to other clients. Find out if they are happy with the services and staff. Also, inquire about prices to verify it is within your budget. If you feel uncomfortable during your visit, consider taking your services elsewhere. Finding the best vet for you and your pet will take time and research. You should put the same effort into finding a doctor for your animal as you would in finding one for yourself. The bottom line is that your pet’s health is a cooperative undertaking between you and your veterinarian. Finding the perfect vet for you and your furry, scaly or feathered friend will ensure your pet is with you for years to come.

Whether you need a routine cleaning or a complex dental procedure, finding the right dentist will save you time and money. No one wants to have a root canal redone because of shoddy work. It is vital that you find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable, someone who will help you improve your dental health in a hygienic environment. Finding a dentist near your home or workplace will help you make your appointments on time. As well, their office hours should accommodate your schedule. So how should you start your search? First, ask your social network for recommendations. Friends, family and colleagues

can be a great resource. Searching on the internet for dental offices in your area will also help. Professionals often have their own websites, which include the backgrounds of those working there. The website may also tell you about how they handle procedures and appointments, as well as specialized services they offer. Once you have gathered a list, begin calling each prospective dentist. You can talk to a receptionist or other staff person if the dentist is unavailable. Check that he or she has earned the necessary degree from a reputable school and is current on all licensing and continuing educational requirements. When someone meets all of your requirements, visit the office. The staff should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer all

Many professionals are willing to go above and beyond to help you work through these issues. A basic oral health history should be taken by the dentist or staff. They should tell you about future treatment and prevention options. A quality dentist will help you feel comfortable during your visit.
