was not what Mike thought was making walking so painful. “My hip started to hurt but I thought it was my back, as I hurt my back many years ago.” So he kept on walking and it kept on hurting until he just had to stop walking because the pain was so bad. Mike decided it was time to see a surgeon and was surprised when he pointed to the hip area of the x-ray, clearly showing why it had become so painful. After his hip replacement at the Sentara OrthoJoint Center at Sentara Obici Hospital, Mike explains that he, “Never had any pain afterwards. healthy diet, healthy weight and regular exercise are the foundation for minimizing the risk for contemporary disorders.Yes, even cancer. Although nutrition-enriched meals cannot cure or guarantee cancer prevention, increasing research indicates that a plant-based diet is significant ammunition to battle cancer. According to American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and other studies, flavonoids, phenolic acids, antioxidants, curcumin, phytochemicals, folate, sulforaphane, calcium, and reservatol are among substances that may inhibit cancer cell development. The flavonoids and phenolic acid in apples, for example, protect cells and may slow down cancer progression. Supplements are not the answer. AICR indicates the synergy of compounds working together in food is the best. Make room on your plate for superfoods ranging from broccoli and tomatoes, to berries and walnuts. Sulforphene, found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, is connected to the prevention of colon and prostate cancers especially when chewed thoroughly. Entice your family

with a handful of broccoli sprouts on salads or sandwiches for extra carcinogen fighting power. If your sweet tooth is calling, try gingerbread cookies. Ginger root contains curcumin, currently under investigation as a source for minimizing the potential for ovarian cancer and brain tumors. No sweets in your diet? Sprinkle ginger on vegetables or combine with other spices for Asianinspired dishes. Fighting cancer with super foods does not have to be challenging, tasteless or complicated. The American Cancer Society says use a color guide. Research indicates that colorful, freshly picked foods such as red raspberries, bright blueberries, red and orange peppers, purple eggplant and deep green spinach, for example, are excellent choices. Begin your cancer crusade today. Prepare a meal with one or two super foods and remember what your mother told you - an apple a day keeps the doctor away. You can celebrate a healthier you with a glass of red wine or grape juice – the resveratrol-filled choices are also weapons against cancer.

WHAT TO EAT IF YOU HAVE CANCER: HEALING FOODS THAT BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM by Daniella Chace, MSc, CN

“When my husband was diagnosed with cancer this book had a lot to do with his recovery. I learned to cook with herbs that were helpful with working with chemo and other drugs he was on at the time. The key was cooking with antioxidants to rid the body of the poison pumped in every day during the chemo regimen. Ginger is amazing and kept the nausea at bay. I still use several of the recipes today even though my husband is cancer free.” -Suzanne F.,

t’s all about your quality of life. Perhaps walking, shopping, taking part in hobbies or doing housework has become difficult or even unbearable. Conservative measures such as diet, exercise and medications may no longer provide relief or alleviate your pain. Hip and knee joint replacement surgeries are commonly performed elective operations.* If you’ve come to a point where knee or hip pain has reduced your quality of life, it may be time for you to consider joint replacement surgery. Sentara has developed the Sentara OrthoJoint Center , with proven quality methods that motivate and offer a quicker recovery to get people back to the activities they enjoy. Each Sentara OrthoJoint Center has a dedicated area of the hospital that focuses only on joint replacement patients, mainly hip and knee replacements. It brings together a team of experienced surgeons, specially trained nurses, therapists and other team members all focused on implementing proven methods of care that help patients recover in a way that is motivating and as enjoyable as elective surgery can be. Family members are encouraged to participate throughout the joint replacement process. This includes designating a family member or friend to be the patient’s coach, who is included in the group activities and therapy sessions, meals, educational classes and other events as the patient recovers. An added benefit is the support that both family members and patients feel being surrounded by other patients and family members who are going through the same recovery process. A couple of months after surgery, all patients and their coaches are invited back to a Reunion Luncheon to visit with staff memdedicated Orthopedic Patient Navigator bers and other former patients. The room is patients and their families informed always filled with a lot of laughter and proud and keeps on track, including an educational announcements of enjoying life, without workshop before surgery to learn about joint joint pain. replacement.

BE PROACTIVE –lower your risk

I’m continually amazed by the human body and its incredible ability to heal itself. There are a multitude of home remedies that work along with the body to promote healing, most of which have been used for centuries and are very effective. However, our bodies and our environment are far from perfect. The daily toxins we are exposed to, among other things, can work against us. So, it’s necessary to live proactively, doing what we can to reduce the risk of disease. While we cannot always control the air we breathe, we can control what we put into our bodies. Knowing that a healthy diet can greatly reduce the risk of many diseases should be powerful motivation to eat healthier. Living foods like fruits and vegetables are among the most potent foods choices, so it makes sense to eat a high quantity of them each and every day. Eating healthy should not be considered restrictive; rather, it’s a proactive decision–a preventative measure. A diet high in vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants can give your body what it needs to build a strong immune system. Exercise is another component of prevention; it can help contribute to a stronger, healthier mind and body. It can keep the cardiovascular system in shape and keep the muscular and skeletal system strong. It is proven that exercise can do much to lower the risk of many lifestyle related diseases. And, of course, avoiding certain behaviors like smoking, excessive use of drugs, alcohol and caffeine may also reduce the risk of getting sick. Despite genetics, environmental concerns and other challenging factors, a proactive approach is always smart medicine! I hope you enjoy this special holistic health issue. We hope it will inspire you to cherish and care for your mind and body. Peace, Love & Carrots,

n 2012, when recording artist, Kathy Phillips, found out she had cancer, she made a bold decision to take her fight public and use her voice to educate women on the importance of early detection. Since August 2012, Kathy has given a candid behind the scenes account of her most vulnerable moments from patient to survivor and she has done it with a smile. Throughout the process, she’s also heightened awareness on the power of caregivers, having a positive outlook, and supporting patients. “Seeing my mom pass away from cancer changed my life,” says Phillips, as she reflected on her own diagnosis. “I spent a lot of time in the Palliative Care Clinic where my mom spent her last few months, and I got to witness first hand how a negative attitude can impact the patient but also the caregiver, too.” When a loved one has been recently diagnosed or is living with cancer, it is often difficult to know how to step up and support them through the challenging times ahead. Although there is no rulebook when it comes to supporting a friend, here are a few words of wisdom from Kathy on how to be a shoulder to lean on: Be patient “Being patient is one of the most important ways you can help someone with their recovery. Remember that they’re going through a tough time digesting the news, dealing with their treatment and recovering from the surgery. Even the simplest things may seem overwhelming at first.”

Create a support system Providing a solid support system for your loved one will help reassure them that they are not alone. “Don’t ask insensitive questions such as “So, when do you lose your hair?” If you’re not sure how to help, ask. Replenish your energy If you are a Caregiver, find time to meet with friends and have your own support system in place to help you through the journey. It’s a tough job to take on and as much as the patient needs the support, so do you.

Reach out to connect Don’t be afraid to reach out to check-in or make plans for the future. Kathy recommends the book, Cancer is a Word, not a Sentence as an excellent tool to help understand patient treatment and what to expect during the process. “Having cancer can make you feel alienated so always reach out,” says Phillips. inspirehealthmag.com § #inspirehealthmag

“Yes, as the saying goes, ‘they’re fake, . . . But my real ones tried to kill me!’” Anonymous

Thankfully reconstructed breasts can now look and feel normal allowing women after mastectomy to participate in sports and other activities they enjoy. This is our friend Connie and she is grateful because Dr. J. Craig Merrell, a true artist in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive breast care helped restore her form and figure. If you or a loved one is considering breast reconstruction here are some things to remember: • Consult a plastic surgeon when possible BEFORE making your decision about surgery and other treatment (lumpectomy and radiation vs mastectomy, skin sparing vs nipple sparing mastectomy, radiation vs no radiation) and the impact 8

of your decision on options for reconstruction). • Consult a Board Certified plastic surgeon that has years of experience doing all types of reconstruction including the complex microsurgical DIEP flap. • Don’t be afraid to ask pointed questions: How many of these operations do you do each week? What is your success rate? Which option is best for me and why? How many procedures will it take to complete the reconstruction? When will I be able to resume normal activities? • You should be able to see lots of pictures of your Plastic Surgeon’s work and talk personally to patients like Connie if you like.

Rebounder Checklist: Here are some questions to ask before you purchase a rebounder. 1. What kind of warranty comes with the rebounder? 2. Is there a suggested weight limit for the rebounder? 3. What type of bounce does the rebounder have: a “soft bounce”, an “easy bounce”, or a firmer bounce? According to healthytrampolines.com, the right rebounder will give you 3G forces when bouncing with your feet never or barely leaving the mat. This is when you know you have the right rebounder that fits your weight and are getting the best results when doing the Health Bounce (see exercise 1). Some rebounders may require you to jump higher and harder, giving fewer bounces and creating a slower hydraulic lymphatic pump. 4. What type of mat does the rebounder have? Rebounders made with poor quality mat materials have a tendency to over stretch or crack. This can unknowingly cause injury to the feet, ankles, knees or back. 5. What type of frame does the rebounder have? An all-steel construction frame is best, as aluminum-made frames can bend or break. 6. Will you need to stow the rebounder away? If so, does the rebounder fold for easy storage? 7. Does the unit come with an instructional DVD to guide you through an exercise routine? 8. If you think you will need a stabilizing bar for support, does the rebounder come with one, or must you purchase it separately? 9. Always read the product reviews on various websites from individuals that have purchased the unit you are considering purchasing. 10. Check out healthytrampolines.com for more details.

AB CRUNCH

Sit in the center of the trampoline. Bend your knees up and bend back slightly. Extend your legs out to a 45 degree angle and extend your arms to your side. Come back to starting position. Repeat for 30 seconds.

FITNESS IS FOR EVERY WOMAN!

If you are new to the rebounder (minitrampoline) you can stick with the health bounce. You will still get many benefits just by including this move in your health regimen. Try the health bounce for two minutes a few times throughout the day. The light bouncing motion is easy on the joints and provides an internal massage, stimulating the lymphatic system to flush toxins and circulate blood flow.

POWER BOUNCE

Stand on the trampoline with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bounce straight down and then bring your knees high up to your chest. This is a dynamic movement. The further you bounce down, the higher you will jump up. Repeat for 30 seconds.

Bonus Move: DONKEY KICKS

Get into a pike position with your hands on the ground and your toes on the trampoline. Bounce by pressing your feet down and then kick your heels to your butt. Continue this motion for 30 seconds.

HEADACHE

Aim for Arnica.

Arnica Montana is a natural, herbal anti-inflammatory available in chewable pill form and as a cream. You can apply the topical gel cream to the forehead to relieve headache pain. Also rub the cream along your child’s neck and shoulders to relieve tension. In a recent study in Rheumatology International, the anti-inflammatory effect of Arnica gel was found to be as effective as ibuprofen gel. It is available online and in healthfood stores.

SLEEP WOES

Spritz wit h Lavender.

If your child has trouble falling asleep at night, spritz her pillow case with lavender spray. You can also apply a few drops of essential lavender oil to her pillow case, bed sheets, or blankie. At bath time, use lavender bubble bath, or pour lavender oil in to your child’s bathwater just before bedtime. Lavender promotes a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Even diluted concentrations of essential lavender oil can reduce levels of cortisol, a stressrelated hormone.

Make it Bergamot.

If your child has a low-grade fever due to a cold or the flu, rub him with Bergamot oil. Bergamot oil is a natural antiseptic, and can fight the infection, whether it is viral or bacterial. When dealing with fever, also make sure he is well-hydrated with water. Bergamot oil is available online, and in health-food stores. Note: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, here’s when you should call the pediatrician: if your child is two months or younger and has a rectal temperature of 100.4 or higher; if he is between three and six months of age and has a fever of 101 or higher; if she is older than six months and has a fever of 103 or higher, or if she has febrile convulsions (seizure).

SHOW SOME LOVE During the early years of a child’s life, genuine love and appropriate physical contact play a vital role in their overall health and wellbeing. In fact, numerous studies indicate that children that are shown affection (appropriately) through hugs and kisses from their parents/caregivers enjoy better health and growth (both mental and physical). Human touch is powerful. Hug and kiss your children every chance you get.

3-D Technology Enhances Mammography’s Ability to Save Lives

B

reast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected significantly influences a woman’s chance of survival. Many areas of Hampton Roads have higher incidences and mortality rates for breast cancer than the national averages, making the availability of 3-D mammography in our area essential to protecting the health of Hampton Roads women. “In the fight against cancer, early detection is our most powerful weapon,” said Susan McKenzie, MD, fellowship-trained breast imaging specialist and board-certified radiologist. “Mammography is the only proven breast cancer screening tool to reduce mortality. It is the gold standard in diagnos-

ing cancer. Digital breast tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, is the latest innovation in breast cancer detection.” 3-D mammography allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time to inspect for any abnormalities in the tissue. During a 3-D mammogram, multiple images of the breast are obtained at different angles. Using high-powered computing, digital breast images are then converted into a stack of very thin layers or “slices.” These images can be viewed as a detailed 3-D reconstruction of the breast. The technology has proven its worth in helping to prevent breast cancer. 3-D mammography, when combined with conventional 2-D mammography, has a 40 percent higher detection rate for invasive cancer than conventional 2-D mammography alone, helping doctors diagnose cancer at an earlier stage. When caught early,

five-year survival rates for breast cancer are as high as 98 percent. Generous donations from the community to the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation have made possible the addition of 3-D mammography at the Millie Lancaster Women’s Center at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View. Community members and Bon Secours employees, including Dr. Mark Kerner with Virginia Orthopaedic & Spine Specialists, worked with the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation to raise the funds to expand mammography services. The mammography room will be named in loving memory of Dr. Kerner’s wife, Dr. Anuradha Datyner Kerner, who lost her life to an aggressive form of breast cancer in 2009. For more information about 3-D mammography at Millie Lancaster Women’s Center at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View, please call 757-541-1914.

About Dr. Susan McKenzie Dr. Susan McKenzie is a fellowship-trained, board-certified radiologist with Medical Center Radiologists. She is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed her internship at Anderson Family Practice, a division of the Medical University of South Carolina. Her residency in radiology was completed at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she now serves as an assistant professor of clinical radiology. long time vegetarian, cleaned up her diet even more by eliminating dairy, processed sugar, processed foods, and alcohol. She dropped 30 lbs. within a matter of weeks. While working closely with her medical doctor, she also began working with a Naturopath physician having acupuncture, massage therapy, reflexology, colonics, and began gulping down wheat grass like shots of tequila. Although coping with a life threatening illness, Kayle says: “I was thriving. I felt great. I looked great. I was absolutely glowing.” But, why would Kayle say cancer is the best thing that has ever happened to her? For starters, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States--Kayle Martin is one of them. In addition to having a new and greater appreciation for life itself, a cancer diagnosis jolted Kayle into a healthier, happier, purpose-driven life. Kayle’s whole approach to healing allowed her to kick up her cowgirl heels and walk to and from the hospital for each and every chemo treatment. Kayle said she never felt sick and never experienced the nausea and other volatile side effects often associated with chemo and radiation. She continued hiking, planting her organic garden, and maintained an incredibly positive, lively spirit.Throughout the whole experience, something clicked

for Kayle, she says: “It just made sense to me to get back to nature. I had a very strong will to live.” She feels that she is healthier now than before she had cancer. “Everything I do, everything I put in my body and on my skin, the company I keep, everything supports my new way of life. It’s just better now!” What Kayle—two-time cancer survivor, learned and wants other women to know is you can change your life! You can be healthy and happy! Kayle looked to her own personal heroine, Kris Carr, from the award-winning film “Crazy, Sexy, Cancer” for inspiration. Now she is inspiring others by working along with her local hospital as a Peer Support Volunteer Navigator.Through this volunteer work, Kayle helps mentor newly diagnosed cancer patients through every step of their treatment. n top of coping with a life threatening disease, many breast cancer patients have to contend with total hair loss, lumpectomies, mastectomies (surgical removal of the breast), possible sexual identity issues, and intimacy concerns. A breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating—but, it doesn’t have to be. In fact, many are calling cancer their guru. Like a faithful teacher, cancer is showing women how to be strong, embrace healthy living, and live life to the fullest. Cover girl, Kayle Martin, learned to turn her feelings of being overwhelmed into positive, useful energy. Kayle was determined to give cancer the boot by forging ahead with her cowgirl mentality. For Kayle, a big part of being a cowgirl is the attitude. Growing up riding horses on a farm in rural Northern California, she had always been taught that if she fell off her horse she had to get right back on. A cowgirl spirit is branded with courage. They make no excuses and face life head on. So, after wiping the tears from her cheeks, armed with her indomitable cowgirl spirit, Kayle decided to grab cancer by the horns, one faith-filled day at a time. In addition to chemotherapy, radiation, and a unilateral mastectomy (5 surgeries total), Kayle’s very first step was changing her diet. Kayle, a

In most cases, chamomile is available in either German or Roman (also called English) varieties. It’s sold as crushed flowers or as a tea infusion, and one tablespoon is enough for one cup. When used over several months, it can even help chronic sleep and stomach issues. Thyme - While the sharp taste and distinct aroma might challenge some tea drinkers, the herb thyme can help reduce coughing, alleviate painful bronchitis symptoms, and relieve common sinus pressure. It works to cleanse the organs of the body, boosting the immune system and also helping in urination and menstruation. When making tea, thyme takes a little time. Use two teaspoons of the dried herb per cup, and steep for ten minutes. For the best results, drink one cup three times a day.

Have you hit a hard patch? It happens to all of us. Don’t get overly stressed. Cradle your hands around a sweet cup of hot tea and just relax your soul by listening to Serenity Relaxing Spa Music 101 from iTunes. Our favorite melody on this album is “Song of the Sea.”

ow modern wellness experts recognize that besides the emotional balm a tea break can provide, some teas can heal everything from an upset stomach, to sleeplessness, to depression. Here are the best three teas to help you get through the symptoms of day-to-day anxiety: Rosemary – Spicy and fragrant, this pert-tasting herbal tea offers relief from headaches and anxiety. Its high doses of calcium and iron make it a great source of minerals, and studies even show it’s rich in antioxidants. In parts of Europe, rosemary is often used to fight indigestion. Some herbal tea users also say it helps improve blood circulation and enhances memory and concentration. Medical studies indicate it can also do much to prevent macular (optical) decay, prevent brain aging, and relieve indigestion. Rosemary tea is a simple recipe – just use one tablespoon of dried rosemary leaves for one cup of tea. Chamomile – One of the most famous teas, the oils of this gentle-tasting brew provide relief from stomach and digestive problems, including colitis. It’s

f you are having difficulty reading the print in this article, I would like to help you understand options available for better vision. We are going to tackle the subject of Presbyopia, literally “old eyes”, which affects not only the elderly, but is also one of the frustrations of middle age. The eye’s ability to change focus from far to near is called accommodation. This is accomplished by a muscular contraction inside the eye which creates slack in the supportive fibers that suspend the lens. This change in tension allows an increase in the curvature of the lens and therefore an increase in the optical power. The greater the change in optical power, the nearer an object can be brought into focus. The eye loses accommodative ability throughout life. This is due to the gradual increase in the density of the lens as new layers are added. The lens literally stiffens over the course of our lifetime. An infant’s lens is almost liquid, by age 10 it’s Jell-O, by 50 it’s candle wax and by 90 it’s granite. As the lens stiffens, it does not change shape

as much or as readily (and eventually not at all) when the fibers slacken. As a result, we have increasing difficulty focusing on near objects. This process is known as Presbyopia. Infants can focus on objects within an inch of their eye. Each year it gets a little further out. It’s not much of an issue until objects that are at reading distance become more difficult to bring into focus. On average, this occurs between age 40 and 45. Symptoms include needing to move text farther away to read it clearly, eyestrain and headaches when reading or working on the computer. The timing of this is a general rule, but there is some variability due to differences in the rate of density changes from one person to another. If reading glasses are worn prematurely or little near work is done, the eye muscles also can become lazy and lose some of their ability to contract. These variables result in some people requiring

reading help as early as the late 30s while others make it to 50, but Presbyopia affects everyone eventually. Some people falsely believe that they can hold off or prevent Presbyopia by exercising their eye muscles. Unfortunately, presbyopia has little to do with muscle weakness. The muscle contraction only releases the tension on the lens to allow it to change shape naturally. The muscle cannot force the change, it can only permit it. When the lens is too rigid to change shape, it simply won’t change. The solutions to presbyopia are simple, but somewhat annoying. Those lucky enough to have been free of glasses will simply need the help of a low powered pair of non-prescription reading glasses. Those in glasses will need to add a bifocal. Other, more creative options can be found at your eye doctor for certain cases. The bottom line is you don’t need to grow longer arms to read the bottom line.

BUT SHOULD IT BE HOT OR COLD?

OOKING FOR A WAY TO RELAX? INCREASE CIRCULATION? BOOST IMMUNITIES? WOULD YOU BELIEVE ME IF I SAID YOU COULD ACCOMPLISH ALL OF THAT WITH SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS WATER? YOU JUST NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Across the planet, water has been associated with healing and physical/ mental well-being for, as long as human beings have kept records. Hydrotherapy has been credited with curing everything from indigestion to cancer. Sound too good to be true? Maybe it’s time for you to give it a try. Let’s start with the basics. Soaking in a natural hot spring, mineral bath, or even your tub at home is a great way to unwind after a strenuous activity or a long day. The warm water soothes aching muscles allowing a feeling of total relaxation to (literally) wash over you.

Benefits of a HOT soak: Reduces the effects of stress on the body Nourishes the skin and body by flushing toxins out through the pores Dilates blood vessels thus lowering blood pressure Decreases insomnia (when timed within 2 hours of bedtime) Water can also offer mobility to those limited by arthritis and other physical ailments. While the warmth relaxes the muscles, the buoyancy supports the body reducing stress on joints and allowing for freer movement. Further, minerals found in hot springs contain natural curatives like calcium, magnesium and lithium which aid in bone, muscle and brain function … to name only a few of their benefits. Now let’s take it up a notch. While hot water therapies have always been embraced in this country, Americans are just starting to dive in to the idea of cold water plunges. Other cultures around the world have been

using them for centuries to heal, rejuvenate and promote health and vitality. Benefits of a COLD plunge: Awakens the system better than a cup of coffee Flushes the organs by contracting muscles to eliminate toxins Increases circulation Stimulates the release of norepinephrine (a stress hormone) and epinephrine (adrenaline) to energize the body The good news here is that less is more. It’s not an endurance test, so you need only expose yourself to the low temperatures for 30-60 seconds to reap the health benefits. What other physical exercise delivers so quickly? Seriously, where’s the nearest creek? Cannonball!

ennifer Schneider first set her sights on Suffolk Eye Physicians & Surgeons in 1997, as a Nansemond-Suffolk Academy junior who shadowed ophthalmologist Andrew J. O’Dwyer for her school’s “career week” assignment. Today, Schneider – a 34-year-old ophthalmologist with degrees from Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School – works side-by-side with her mentor. In 2013, she bought the practice from O’Dwyer, who practices three days a week. “When I saw my first cataract surgery, I was hooked,” said Schneider, referencing her high school stint with O’Dwyer. “I liked his personal connection with patients. He knew them by name and could tell you stories about their families and lives.” Personal relationships with patients will always be a pillar of the practice, even as it expands, Schneider said. O’Dwyer, who has practiced in Suffolk for 36 years, has been known to make house calls for bedbound patients. The doctors frequently give their cell phone numbers to patients and occasionally, offer opportunities for free vision screenings or glaucoma testing as a community service. “I often run into patients in Food Lion, Wal-Mart or church … and end up giving curbside consults,” said Schneider. “We are a part of this community … and we care about the people here. I think patients look for that (quality) in their doctors.” Suffolk Eye Physicians & Surgeons, located at 2016 Meade Parkway, has seen an uptick in patient traffic over the past six months, Schneider said. Besides Schneider and O’Dwyer, Suffolk Eye’s staff physicians include optometrist Samantha Triplett and part-time ocular plastics surgeon Teresa Shenouda. The practice specializes in cataract and laser surgery, plastic sur-

gery, diabetic eye care, pediatric eye care and macular degeneration. Twice a month, the Virginia Beach-based Wagner Macula & Retina Center holds office hours at Suffolk Eye. Ophthalmologists Alan L. Wagner and Kapil G. Kapoor are specialists in vitreoretinal surgery, which focuses on diseases affecting the retina and the macula. Suffolk Eye Physicians & Surgeons opened its second location, Smithfield Eye, in Smithfield Commons Shopping Center, 1807 S. Church St., in mid-October. Triplett and O’Dwyer will gradually ramp up operations in Isle of Wight County to three days a week over the next few months, Schneider said. Smithfield Eye will share its office space with an optical shop that sells eyeglasses, operated independently by optometrist David Lotz. “We noticed we were getting a lot of patients from Isle of Wight County, that people who lived in Smithfield were either coming to Suffolk or traveling to the Peninsula to see their eye doctors,” Schneider said. “We realized there was an underserved market there.” Although she declined to be specific, Schneider said that Suffolk Eye will likely expand into other local markets within the next five years. Most of Suffolk Eye’s 15 employees have worked for the practice for decades, O’Dwyer said. “They are loyal; at least five have been there for over 25 years,” said O’Dwyer, whose patients have spanned three and four generations of families. He added: “I am so proud of Jennifer for what she has accomplished in her professional life. Now she has what she always wanted in her life and I have a great partner.”
