PEANUT FEST

SUFFOLK NEWS-HERALD

I’m SO going to miss this I blew it. Somehow I actually forgot that Peanut Fest always takes place on the second weekend of October. At 51, I’d like to think I’m still too young to blame this on old age, but failing to blame it on that would leave me with no other option except simple boneheadedness. My wife likely has something to say about that. So while you’re at Peanut Fest — you WILL be at Peanut Fest, won’t you? — I’m going to be out of the country. It’s the only reason I could imagine for missing Suffolk’s biggest event Best of the year — except, perhaps, hospitalization. wishes In fact, th it wasn’t until we were well38 into the planning stages for Annual our annual newsroom foray into the wildsPeanut of Peanut Fest that I realized theFest! dates of this year’s

event coincided with the dates my wife and I will be gone. One minute, we were talking about how to keep warm this year in the Suffolk N e w s - H e r a l d ’s tent, where we’ve produced Peanut Res Spears Fest editions of the paper for the Editor past three years, and the next I was standing before my staff, saying, “Uh oh.” And then all the planning came to a screeching halt. There was just no way I could ask my staff to do all the hard work of setting up our mobile newsroom without being there to help them. So we won’t be at Peanut Fest this year, at least not round-theclock, as we have done the past few years.

That said, staff members from the Suffolk News-Herald will be on site for all the big events. The demolition derby. The mud bog. The Peanut Butter Sculpting Contest. (YAY! It’s back!) The concerts. Maybe even the hotwings challenges, which one of our former staff members seems to be intent on winning some day. Personally, I’m especially going to miss the tasty treats to be found and enjoyed, especially the free peanuts. There’s nothing like walking past the information booth and being handed a cupful of free salted-in-the-shell goodness, only to turn around and come back 10 minutes later for more. Have a great Peanut Fest. As with the peanuts, I’ll be back for more. — Res Spears

It’s a food-for-all BY STERLING GILES STAFF WRITER

This year’s food selections at the Suffolk Peanut Fest are set to have your mouth watering. There will be a variety ranging from barbecue to jambalaya. There will be more than 30 food vendors on-site, according to Angie Twiford, assistant director for Suffolk Festivals Inc. A little mud and a few dents

BY NIQKO MARSHALL STAFF WRITER

It’s about that time of year for motorsports fans to gather at the Suffolk Peanut Fest to watch cars and trucks compete in highenergy events filled with flying mud and clanking metal. The Demolition Derby and the mud jam have been popular events at Peanut Fest, and they’re back this year by popular demand. And organizers have made some changes to increase participation this time around. For the last couple of years, the Demolition Derby has had a slight drop in competitors. Among the reasons is the increase

in the price of scrap vehicles. This year the Demolition Derby staff is determined to bring the event back to where it used to be. The plan seems to be working, as twice the number of cars have registered this far. Part of the attraction has been an increase in the prize money, from $1,500 to $4,150. Also, different classes have been created for those who want to basic-build or weld. The classes include stock compact, stock full size, and modified full size. In previous years there were only two classes. Now drivers have to be aware of what classes they are in and what the rules allow. A nicer

FILE PHOTO

The new Mud Jam was so popular at last year's Peanut Fest that organizers held an encore in the spring. This weekend's event has been expanded to include a variety of new classes.

track also will be established this year that will allow more room for speed and harder hits. A Mad Dog award will be given this year to the driver who puts on the best show — or in other words who receives the most “oooh’s” and “ahhh’s” from the crowd. “This award is for the guy who goes out there and puts on a show,” derby staff member Scotty Buchanan said. “He doesn’t care about winning — he just wants to tear stuff up and give the crowd a good show.” The winner of the Mad Dog award will receive a custom trophy made of car parts. Buchanan and the rest of the staff are confident that the changes will improve the derby, while also catering to the excitement of friends and families. “Fans come to be entertained,” he said. “There’s a reason why there’s traffic on the road — because people love a good wreck. They want to see a bunch of cars out there hitting and tearing stuff up, instead of a handful of cars. The Peanut Fest saw a means to make changes this year and so far it’s been a success.” The Mud Jam, like the derby, is expected to deliver a great event. One thing that is unique about the nonprofit event this year is the increase of “street trucks” participating. Street trucks are normal, everyday trucks that are

The Demolition Derby has long been a popular event for spectators at the Suffolk Peanut Fest, but in recent years, participation had fallen. Organizers have made some changes to arrest that trend.

not normally used for racing. “Usually we have about five or eight of those trucks, but I am floored by how many we have this year,” Big Daddy Motorsports’ Ken Whitley said. “We have about 30 so far. It gives everybody a chance to run their truck if they want to.” The track will be set up to be equal for every type of truck. Along with street trucks, “tuff trucks” and monster trucks will be involved, as well. The popularity of Mud Jam has allowed for events outside of Peanut Fest, including an encore event in April. The event is open to all who want to participate. “What gets the fans so excited about this event is that they can

look at those cars in the mud and relate to it as something they drive,” Whitley said. “The fans can look at the vehicles in this event and say, ‘Hey, I drive something like that.’” The Mega-Truck Tug of War will be exciting, as a steel pipe with chains will be tied to the back of the trucks, and they will try to pull each other backward. Both events are expecting big turnouts, and registration is open until the day of the event. Participants come from everywhere from Northern Virginia to Maryland and North Carolina. The Demolition Derby will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. The Mud Jam will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Big names for the big stage

BY R.E. SPEARS III EDITOR Country music star Joe Nichols gets the top billing for Peanut Fest, but there’s plenty of hot entertainment on the Budweiser Main Stage, both Saturday and Sunday. Josh Phillips will open for Nichols at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and Clark Manson and the Brothers Osborne will entertain from the festival’s prime venue, with sets starting at 2 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, on Sunday.

Josh Phillips

Josh Phillips

Phillips, a native of Sanford, N.C., had been expected to become famous in another venue entirely, the baseball field. He was a high school star, was scouted by Major League Baseball and played in college.

But that’s where the slugging career ended and a new career behind a microphone began. Facing career-ending injuries, Phillips put down his bat and picked up a guitar in 2012, and it soon became apparent that

his talent on the baseball field would be eclipsed by his stage presence, his songwriting ability and his musical skills. In four short years, he has played more than 400 shows in more than a dozen states, appearing at festivals and top venues and opening for national acts including Cole Swindell, Chris Janson, Sam Hunt and Tyler Farr. He has also written with such artists as Love & Theft, Channing Wilson and Alabama’s Kemo Forrest. His song “Can I Get an Outlaw” was recorded by Luke Combs, and Warren Stone, a top-25 contestant on “The Voice,” is releasing another Phillips song, “Up in Smoke.” Phillips released an acoustic version of his first single, “Fixer Upper,” in August, and he is working on his debut album.

Clark Manson

When Clark Manson’s parents realized their toddler had memorized all the lyrics to “Achy Breaky Heart,” they began to make sure their son was exposed to all the music he could handle, including an annual music festival, the Country Concert, in nearby Fort Loramie, Ohio. But it was a seat in the nosebleed section at a George Strait concert when he was 5 that set the singer’s course. “Ever since then, I wanted to be George Strait,” he states in the biography on his website. His parents gave him a guitar when he was 9, and he began teaching himself to play. By 12, he could play “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” A potentially costly run-in

Clark Manson with a resident advisor in college turned into a free show at a nearby bar, and soon Manson was a repeat performer at his college hangout, a gig that convinced him to form a full band See STAGE page 17

Nichols loves fair atmosphere

BY TRACY AGNEW NEWS EDITOR

Joe Nichols comes to Peanut Fest as the headliner on the heels of surprise openings on The Garth Brooks World Tour in front of sold-out crowds in Anaheim, Calif. Nichols treated the shocked crowds to rollicking openings for Brooks, one of the most recognized names in country music. “It’s been kind of a whirlwind few days here,” Nichols said by phone recently. He is on his own tour throughout 2016, which includes a stop at the Peanut Fest on Saturday. Nichols said he remembers going to county fairs as a child and seeing his favorite musicians. “The atmosphere of a county fair, to me, is a fun one,” he said. “The fairs always seem to make me happy, no matter what happens.” Nichols recorded his first album in 2002. A couple of years later, the Rogers, Ark., native went from working nights as a country music disc jockey to touring with Alan Jackson and Toby Keith. Since then, the accolades have poured in. He is a fourtime Grammy nominee and has won multiple awards from the

Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, Billboard and the New York Times. In 2014, he became one of only two artists to spend more than two weeks at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Throughout his career, he’s had six No. 1 hits and eight Top 10 singles, such as “Brokenheartsville” and “Gimmie That Girl.” This year, he’s riding high on his new single, “Undone.” Nichols said he did “Undone” after hearing from his wife that he doesn’t do many “sexy” songs. “There’s party songs or more thought-provoking songs, but there’s not a whole lot of sexy songs in the catalog,” Nichols agreed. He was nervous about his wife hearing the song for the first time, but she loved it. And it seems the fans love it, too. “The crowds have loved it,” he said. “And radio seems to really dig it.” Nichols says he’s grown a lot from those days in 2002 when he was still cutting his first album. “I’m a little more mature — and in some ways, I’m not,” he joked. “Musically, I’ve always been aware of what I’m supposed to be, what I feel my niche is. I’ve never strayed

Unique events expected at festival

BY STERLING GILES

STAFF WRITER

The Suffolk Peanut Festival, one of the city’s premier festivals of the year, will return to Suffolk Executive Airport Thursday through Sunday, and there’s something for everyone. Now in its 39th year, the festival offers a unique batch of events and activities to enjoy. The Chalk Art competition features four divisions composed of elementary, middle school and high school students and adults. Cash prizes are awarded for the top three places in each division. The event is limited to 30 par-

ticipants, with judging conducted by the Suffolk Peanut Fest Queen and her court. The city’s parks and recreation department will sponsor the competition. All art must be family-oriented and coincide with the fest’s theme, “Mud Slingin’ Nut Crackin’ Good Times.” The Virginia Festival of Flight, an annual aviation event, will be held in conjunction this year with the Peanut Fest. On Oct. 8, the event, sponsored by the Virginia Aviation Council, will involve fly-bys, skydiving demonstrations, activities, food and entertainment. Youth will also be able to take airplane rides

free of charge. There will be presentations about airplanes and the components of flight. Also, pilots, trainers and mechanics and other aviation specialists will be onsite to talk with attendees. The Silent Disco is another noteworthy event with a unique spin to your typical dance party. Instead of everyone being intune to the music, participants will have their own individual headsets with their desired genres playing. On the outside looking in, it can look a little odd. But, the event manages to attract a diverse crowd. “It’s pretty neat,” said Angie Twiford, assistant director at Suffolk Festivals Inc. “It attracts the young and old.” The event will run from 6 to 10 p.m. on both Oct. 7 and 8. Lipton Tea and Silent Events will sponsor the event. The Buffalo Wild Wing contest is for lovers of spicy food. On Oct. 8, at 4 and 6 p.m., the challenge welcomes spicy food lovers, as they will indulge in the restaurant’s spiciest wings. There will be prizes awarded to those who beat the challenge. Twiford anticipates this will be one of the most popular events and attract the most participants. The Peanut Butter Sculpture See UNIQUE page 17

with a friend from home. Before long, they were doing 150 shows a year around Ohio. A move to Nashville culminated with Manson recording his debut indie album, “Runnin’ With the Night,” and then he scored a meeting with a booking agent from Variety Attractions. That meeting led to one of those moments of synchronicity that most folks just dream about: the chance to go back home and play the Country Concert, the place where Manson’s love for country music all began. As the 2015 TouchTunes Breakout band winner, Clark’s last single “Track 9” was featured on the Spotify “New Boots” playlist, Music Row radio stations and Sirius XM The Highway. “The stuff we’re putting out now is that summertime, feelgood, arena kind of sound,” he said of his new single “3 Wishes” and upcoming album.

The Brothers Osborne

TJ Osborne and his older brother, John, grew up in the small fishing town of Deale, Md., strumming and singing at all-night jam sessions where workers from nearby would come to listen to the songs of Bob Seger, Hank Williams, Tom Petty and George Jones. From the start, TJ was the one with the voice, and John was

The Brothers Osborne the one with the guitar licks. Together, they nailed everything from traditional country music to rock and roll, and they eventually recorded 11 songs for their debut major-label release, “Pawn Shop.” The album includes bluesy slide guitar, country duets, southern rock solos, harmonies and plenty of grooves, and all the songs were written by the brothers, some of them at home in Nashville and some of them on the road, where the Osbornes have headlined their own club shows, toured with Darius Rucker and played in arenas with Eric Church. “It’s like an old-school rock approach,” said John, citing classic bands like Aerosmith and the Allman Brothers as influences in a biography on their web-

site. “Groups like that always had the lead singer, as well as the sideman guitar player. That’s what we’re going for, too. We’re carving our own path in country music.” That path led the brothers back home, as their debut album’s “Rum” is a tribute to some of Deale’s best things: friends, good weather and an occasional drink. The song’s music video was recorded there and features footage of friends, family and other locals. “Dirt Rich” and “Pawn Shop” stress the importance of appreciating the things you have, and “Loving Me Back,” which features a vocal duet with superstar Lee Ann Womack, is a great love song. Go enjoy the music.

contest is unique to Peanut Fest. This is one of the most anticipated events as it is returning after a one-year hiatus. Last year, the event was replaced with a pumpkin-carving contest. Producers Peanut Co., one of the sponsors and the sole provider of the special peanut butter used for the contest, suffered a fire at its plant last year, which forced the contest

to be switched out, according to Twiford. Keurig Green Mountain will serve as the other sponsor for this event. Overall, the festival will have a taste of everything from food, to local live entertainment, to monster trucks. There will be a variety to choose from for all ages to enjoy. Come out for a mud slingin’ nut crackin’ good time!

Queen is constantly on the run

When Casey Williams first heard that the winner of the Peanut Festival Queen title was from Nansemond River High School, she didn’t think it was possible that it was her. “There’s no way it’s me,” she recalled thinking. She thought it was the other NRHS representative, Savannah Miller. “It has to be Savannah, because I know Savannah’s a great person,” she recalled thinking. “I couldn’t believe it. I was just shaking.” Williams is constantly on the

run, both literally and figuratively. She is a member of the cross country and track teams at Nansemond River. But it didn’t always look like that was meant to be. Several years ago, Williams had back surgery to correct her scoliosis. She still has 19 screws and two rods in her back. However, when a friend encouraged her to try out for sports, that didn’t weigh her down. “I ended up being pretty good at it, and I just liked the people I was with,” Williams said. “I just love it. It’s so fun to be involved in my school through athletics and through my clubs.”

She’s involved in several clubs, as well as sports. National Honor Society, Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes all vie for her time. “The most important would probably have to be Beta,” she said, attributing that to the community service the club does. “It’s cool to see different aspects of the city, and to know you helped someone is a really rewarding experience.” Outside of school, Williams is involved in Girl Scouts and has earned the Bronze Award, for filling and distributing backpacks to homeless children, and the Silver Award, for revamping

the stables at Horses Helping Heroes, an organization that provides equine-assisted activities for military and first responder veterans with disabilities. She also volunteers at her church and in several local ministries. Williams never thought she’d be in a pageant, although the Queen’s Banquet isn’t a pageant in the traditional sense. “I just run and do my schoolwork,” she said. “I’m not that kind of girl, I guess I could say.” But then she decided to have fun with it. “Who doesn’t like to get dressed up for a night?” she said.

Williams expressed her gratitude for everybody who helped with the Queen’s Banquet, which was held Sept. 29 at the Hilton Garden Inn. “It was a night none of us will forget,” she said. “I want to thank everybody that put it together.” She’s looking forward to the new people she’ll meet and new things she’ll do as the Peanut Queen. “I’ve been to Peanut Fest so many times, it’s going to be fun to see it in a different light and different way and different perspective than when you’re just a regular person going,” she said.
