The power of the written word I’ll never forget the first time I met a famous person. I was in my teens and was a big NASCAR fan. I was spending two weeks visiting my maternal grandparents in Greensboro, N.C., the heart of stock-car racing country. Hardly a grocery store opened in those parts back in the ’90s and early 2000s without a race car driver making an appearance and signing autographs. The more well-connected the grocery store was, the bigger-name driver they were able to get. The grocery store that happened to be opening during this particular summer visit must have been pretty well-connected, because they got the biggest name in NASCAR: The King, Richard Petty himself. When we arrived at the grocery store, we joined a long line that wound down the paper towel aisle and seemed not to move for forever. I gripped a piece of scrap paper that was the only thing I could locate on short notice. When we finally got to the front of the line, Petty was perched on a bar stool and was as nice as could be to everybody he met. He signed autographs and posed for photos taken with disposable cameras (who remembers those?). I came away from the experience thrilled and vowing to get more autographs. Over the years I collected signatures from a few more race car drivers. I got autographs and photos from Barbara Eden and Hal Linden at an event at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts a few years ago. I took my husband to Anthony Bourdain’s show a few years ago for his birthday, and we had meet-and-greet passes where we snagged his autograph and photos with him. But that’s about the extent of my autograph collection. My preteen vow to be an autograph collector hasn’t quite worked out as well as Kevin Vavrek’s. Kevin is featured in this issue as one of the most prolific autograph collectors there is. The 49-year-old has more than 18,000 autographs — almost anybody you can name among sports figures, musicians, actors, politicians and other notables. And yes, he’s got The King. Kevin’s collection demonstrates the power of the written word to evoke the careers of notable folks. But for Bea Rogers, also featured in this edition, the written word evokes the career of someone most folks know of but have never heard his name. Rogers’ great-grandfather, Eleazer Kempshall, was an inventor who patented improvements on everything from the golf ball to the automobile tire to the brassiere. Most folks use at least one of these items every day, but nobody knows who Kempshall is. Perhaps this month’s feature on him will shed just a little light on the power of the written word in patents. God bless. Tracy Agnew, Editor Suffolk Living is published six times per year by Suffolk Publications, LLC. P.O. Box 1220, Suffolk, VA 23439 www.suffolklivingmag.com • (757) 539-3437

Suffolk World War II veteran was recently honored by the president of France with one of France’s highest distinctions. Robert “Jack” Ewald, 92, was invited by Virginia Congressmen Bobby Scott and Donald McEachin to attend French President Emmanuel Macron’s address to Congress in Washington, D.C., on April 27. Ewald fought in the Army’s 115th Infantry Division and stormed the beaches of Normandy in the D-Day invasion. On Tuesday, Macron honored Ewald and fellow World War II veterans Stanley Rzucidlo and William Barr with the Legion of Honor, which is awarded on behalf of the

head of state to “the most deserving citizens in all fields of activity,” according to the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honor. “Since 1776, we, the American and French people, have had a rendezvous with freedom. With it comes sacrifices,” Macron said in his Wednesday address. “That is why we are very honored by the presence today of Robert Jackson Ewald, a World War II veteran. “Robert Jackson Ewald took part in the D-Day landing. He fought for our freedom 74 years ago. Sir, on behalf of France, thank you. I bow to your courage and your devotion.” Ewald, who described himself as a “plain ol’ boy from Suffolk,” was humbled by the honor. “It was really impressive,” he said in a phone interview. “I was almost at a loss for words, which is unusual for me.” On June 6, 1944, Ewald was one of 160,000 Allied troops who landed along a 50-mile stretch of Normandy coastline. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded on that beach, but Ewald was one of the 100,000-plus men that made it through.

They advanced to the town of Saint-Laurentsur-Mer, but the men couldn’t crawl over the untamed hedgerows, where narrow openings were covered by German snipers. After Ewald and his unit had fought for nearly two months in the hedgerows, the 9th SS Panzer Division captured Ewald and others in his company. He then endured nine months in four German prisoner-of-war camps. “Mr. Ewald's bravery in service to our country and to defend our freedoms is an example to all,” McEachin stated in a press release. “We are incredibly appreciative and humbled by his service.” Russians liberated the last camp, and the POWs were terrified of being brought into Russia with little hope of return, so Ewald and two of his comrades — one from Kentucky and the other West Virginia — escaped under the fence during a German strafing attack. Ewald and his comrades hiked 60 miles to the American line, passing through several towns before coming across a Shell gas station. The old man and woman in the building let

them sleep in the barn out back. They piled into the hayloft, their stomachs swollen from a combination of dry oats and water. They were then discovered by three Russians. The senior of the three, a lieutenant, wanted them captured. But Ewald managed to convince the sergeant that he knew an uncle of his in Chicago. His bluff worked, and the sergeant lobbied for their freedom. The Russians left them in peace. “Jack’s incredible life story embodies the very best of our country,” Scott stated in a press release. “I am very pleased that more people were able to learn more about his service and sacrifice that helped free Europe from tyranny.” Ewald recalled his time in France after he made it off the beaches. He remembered passing destroyed homes with families in front of them, holding flowers and waving at him and the other men as they marched on. “They didn’t have to do that,” he said. “They just lost their house, but they didn’t care. They were glad to see us.”

Suffolk collector plays name game

Kevin Vavrek shows off the office in his North Suffolk home, where he keeps his autograph collection.

suffolk living 19

Story by Alex Perry Photos by Tracy Agnew

K

evin Vavrek is a collector of autographs, so much so that it’s no easy task for him to find a particular piece in his collection. It’s worse than finding a needle in a hay stack. It’s finding a floppy disk signed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak amidst autographed action figures, soccer balls and various instruments, even a violin with the handwriting of musician and dancer Lindsey Stirling. This 15-by-15-foot room in the North Suffolk home Vavrek shares with his family is a cornucopia of pop culture going back decades, with Tony Hawk, Tom Cruise and all four original members of Kiss stored inside. As of May 2, the 49-year-old has 18,878 autographs on various items hanging on the walls, sitting on shelves or filed in neatly organized binders. “My goal was to turn 50 this December with 20,000, which isn’t going to happen,” Vavrek said as he scanned a shelf filled with books signed by Stephen King, Clive Cussler and other bestselling authors. “But my second goal was 18,262. They say on your 50th birthday, you’ve walked on this earth for 18,262 days, so it’s like having an autograph for every day I’ve been alive. “I’m actually good for a couple years after that.” His lifelong hobby started back when he was in the second grade in Silver Spring, Md. Actor Dick Dyszel showed up at his school as his character “Captain 20,” the alien astronaut who hosted Washington D.C.’s afternoon block of children’s cartoons and live action shorts. Vavrek was already fascinated by printed signatures he’d cut out of magazines from the likes of Joe DiMaggio and other icons, but “Captain 20” was his first big break. “Me and my buddies snuck out of class, and we caught him walking down the hall,” he said. Eventually he got his first car, a 1967 Chevy Nova, and he was able to create more opportunities to get signatures. His odds improved drastically when he got older and started working for Ingram Entertainment, a distributor of DVDs, video games and audiotapes. He now manages the Washington, D.C., Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania regions. He’s dropped off copies to celebrities personally and gotten autographs in the process, which is how he got a signed cowboy hat straight See AUTOGRAPHS page 20

from the head of country music singer Mark Chesnutt, according to Vavrek. “I knocked on his bus thinking it would be some manager guy, but it was Mark Chesnutt,” Vavrek said. “I asked for an autograph, but there weren’t any pictures. He took off his hat and said, ‘Will this do?’” He has a Shellback certificate, which commemorates a U.S. Navy sailor’s crossing of the equator, signed by former President Franklin Roosevelt that set him back $300, the most he’s spent on an autograph, he said. His presidential collection has numerous signatures going back to FDR. He’s had memorabilia signed by the late actor Verne Troyer, along with John Travolta — who goes out of his way to sign things for fans, Vavrek said — and the intimidating character actor Danny Trejo. “He’s rough looking, but he couldn’t have been nicer,” Vavrek said about the “Machete” actor. He’s a diehard Pittsburgh sports fan with Pirates like Dock Ellis and others across countless baseballs and jerseys throughout his trophy room, and Steelers like JuJu SmithSchuster and James Harrison proudly displayed. Vavrek admitted that he’s slowed down a bit as he’s gotten older. He doesn’t have Captain America actor Chris Evans, but he does have a fellow Avenger in Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk. His superhero collection includes a figurine of the Flash, with one leg signed by John Wesley Shipp, the actor who played the speedster in the ’90s television show. Coincidentally, Vavrek explained, both Shipp and Grant Gustin — the actor who plays the modern Flash on the CW network — are Norfolk natives.

“What are the odds that these two actors that played this character, out of all the places,” Vavrek said holding the toy with one leg still unsigned. “One of these days, I’ll get Grant Gustin on the other leg.” He explained that there are plenty of opportunities to get those John Hancocks in Hampton Roads. Actors like Terry O’Quinn — famous for his role of John Locke on the TV series “Lost” — frequently come to Virginia Beach. A big part of the search is simply connecting with other collectors. “We constantly run into each other and share info. If you’re a legitimate autograph collector, then I can’t imagine I haven’t run into you, because there’s only so many opportunities and venues,” Vavrek said. “It’s all about the information. Somebody can come through town, but if you don’t know about it, then it doesn’t do you any good.” Vavrek’s wife, Diana, and their five children ages 9 to 18 don’t share the same relentless enthusiasm that he has with the hobby, and Vavrek also made it clear that he doesn’t do this for the money by any means. “I wouldn’t recommend anyone collecting autographs for an investment, because you’ll never get back what you put into it,” he said. “There’s no such thing as a free autograph, whether it’s gas, tolls or buying something to get signed. You really need to do it because you love it and enjoy it.” See AUTOGRAPHS page 23

The single most expensive autograph in Vavrek's collection is a "shellback" certificate he purchased from a sailor's son in order to gain the signature of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

What he really enjoys are the once-in-a-lifetime experiences of meeting the people holding the Sharpies. Breaking the ice with NASCAR legend Richard Petty with a conversation about his time working on the animated “Cars” with his wife or being awestruck in front of the late John Wooden, NCAA head coach and former basketball player, the “Wizard of Westwood.” Then there are the true heroes that he’s met in his quest. He recalled one family trip to Walt Disney World in Florida where he got to meet one of the survivors of the USS Indianapolis disaster in 1945. He’s met other survivors in Williamsburg and Sunbury, N.C. “It’s just amazing to be able to talk to these guys,” he said. “It’s such an amazing story.” Vavrek had plans to add more names to his room at Lunatic Luau in Virginia Beach on May 5, including Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. He confided that his wide range of tastes makes him unique, even in such a niche hobby. “I love movies, sports, music; I have a lot of interests,” he said. “A lot of the autograph collectors in the area may focus on sports or just do music. There’s only a small handful of us that are actually into everything.”

o one puts much thought into the details of their shoelace, or a car tire, or a golf ball or even the clasps on their bra. These modern-day items were patented back in the early 1900s. Bea Rogers, a former member of Suffolk

City Council, has a home full of history, and she happens to have quite a distinguished lineage. Rogers just happens to be the greatgranddaughter of the man that invented and patented plenty of the items the world uses every day.

Eleazer Kempshall was an inventor who emigrated to the United States from England, and most of his life was spent inventing and improving upon mundane items. Most of these improvements or inventions were birthed from his own experiences. See PATENTS page 26

Bea Rogers shows off a photo of her inventor greatgrandfather, Eleazer Kempshall. Below, she displays some of his innovations on typical everyday items.

Kempshall was invited to attend the coronation of King Edward VII, and prior to the coronation the pair was playing golf when Kempshall was inspired to make and patent improvements to the traditional golf ball. At the time, golf balls were wooden inside and, when hit, they caused a vibration through the body, causing a sore body for the golfer afterward. This was one of Kempshall’s favorite inventions, because he had over 100 patents on golf balls, also known as playing balls. A more notable improvement and patent of Kempshall was the automobile tire. Before Kempshall got involved, tires were completely solid. After his improvements, tires were filled with air and some of them started to feature tire treads. “My favorite invention was the tires, because everyone drives on tires,” Rogers said. Once Kempshall patented his designs, he entered into the tire business as Kempshall Tire Company. Kempshall also used his patents, and the money coming from them, to provide for his family. He had an unmarried daughter, Iva, and he wanted to make sure that she was going to have a comfortable life and be taken care of. To do this, Kempshall put some of his tire patents in her name. Most notably, Kempshall put his patented designs for the anti-skidding tire in Iva’s name. While Kempshall is known for his tires and the numerous patents on golf balls, he also invented many things that women still use. He invented the first stacked heel to be worn by men and women, and the designs even featured an outside layer to keep them from coming apart. Rogers even has some of the original inventions in her home. She has two small boxes filled with mini clasps that now come on the back of women’s brassieres. They are still in their original boxes. Some of her favorite items are the pen tips she still has, one of them made of real gold. The pen tips that Kempshall patented were the first that did not have to be dipped after every letter.

Last edition’s Where Am I? It looks like our Where Am I? challenge in the March-April 2018 edition of Suffolk Living was a bit too difficult, because nobody noticed this sailboat keeping watch over The Riverfront at Harbour View near the where am I? intersection of I Harbour View Boulevard and River Club Drive. YMCA: This building once stood in the 100 block of North Saratoga Street early in the 20th century. It was originally built to house the Young Men's Christian Association, but there was insufficient support for the organization. It was eventually used by the Chamber of Commerce and then the Boy Scouts before being demolished. From "Suffolk in Vintage Postcards" by the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society
