the Brecks

Above: The title of this shot is ‘Chick in parsnips’ – no it’s not a recipe, but a demonstration of how hard they are to spot, even for ringers on the ground. As shown here, after about a week when chicks are disturbed they typically lie flat on the ground with head and neck outstretched. Left: Since the start of this project the RSPB has ringed 3352 chicks in the Brecks. Elveden and Euston estates also ring birds and the total is now thought to be around 3700 birds – plus this one!

Cavenham Heath – an exceptional autumn roost

Last year’s roost was an amazing sight. At its height in late September it comprised a modern record 150 to 170 birds.
