IN THIS GUIDE This information is designed to help guide you on: how to apply, choosing the career path that’s right for you, entry qualifications required, key dates, open events and advice on all the resources and student support we have to offer at One.

HOW TO APPLY Choosing your path Choosing the course which best suits you can be a daunting prospect, not least because there are so many to choose from. Whatever your final decision, you need to have considered the following: • The subjects you enjoy • The subjects you are good at • The career implications of your choice • Your predicted grades: do they qualify you to study that subject? The first two points are self explanatory - most of us enjoy things we are good at and are good at things we enjoy - try and keep this in mind when researching which subjects to study. For a subject which is new to you, do extra research, talk to people who are already doing it or have done it; find out about what kind of topics you will cover (the specifications will be on the exam boards’ websites) and find out what career options they open up. It is also very important to talk to your teachers, careers staff, parents and friends who know you well; their advice is important. Open Events are another important source of information and dates for these can be found on page 14. You will also get an opportunity to discuss further your choice of subjects at your interview. Most importantly, you will need to work hard in Year 11 to achieve the grades you need to gain entry onto courses at Suffolk One. Make sure that you fulfil the entry requirements for each subject - these are shown in the course information sheets on the Suffolk One website as well as in this prospectus. Your predicted GCSE grades need to be at least the grades indicated as entry requirements after each course description. Many schools base your predicted grades on your performance in the mock GCSE exams in Year 11 - these are therefore very important!

GUIDE TO QUALIFICATIONS Courses at Suffolk One We offer an extensive range of courses that will ensure you get the most out of your college experience. Each course offers the highest quality of teaching and the support you need to ensure you meet your full potential. Advanced Level Courses Advanced Level Courses are generally aimed at preparing you for higher education. BTEC Nationals Structure: BTEC National Diplomas are 2-year courses made up of 18 units or subjects (6 core units and 12 specialist units) related to your chosen industry. It is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and at the end you should achieve a triple grade e.g. PPP, MMP or DDD, which attract points for university, just like A-levels. A BTEC National Diploma is the equivalent to achieving 3 A-levels. The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to achieving 1 A-level. Progression: A lot of students will go on to university after studying a BTEC National. It’s a popular and successful route into higher education where you might choose to study a BTEC Higher National qualification or a full degree course. Others go straight into work. A BTEC National will give you the relevant knowledge and skills to enter your chosen industry. BTEC First Diplomas Structure: BTEC First Diplomas are 1-year courses made up of 6 units or subjects, related to your chosen industry. At the end you should achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction. A BTEC First Diploma is the equivalent to achieving 4 GCSEs at grade C. Progression: The BTEC First Diploma is a great stepping stone onto the National Diploma and most students will go on to study at this higher level to develop their knowledge, skills and experience for working in their chosen industry or studying at a higher level. Others might continue learning in the workplace, gaining employment-based training. What is an Entry Course? The Entry Course is a brilliant course if you need extra support to gain the skills you need to move on to a Level 1 course at college or prepare you for work. To come on the Entry Course you do not need any formal qualifications but we do expect you to want to work hard at College and achieve your targets. The course can last 1 or 2 years depending on your ability.

STUDY AREAS A-LEVELS Biology The course emphasises the way in which biologists work and the varied contributions they make to modern society in a scientifically and intellectually rigorous way, stimulating concern and respect for life, developing investigative skills and increasing understanding of scientific principles. This course will build upon concepts and skills that will have been developed at GCSE and presents Biology as exciting, relevant and challenging. Coursework elements are integral to this specification at both AS and A-level. To reinforce what is learnt in class it is expected that students put in a considerable amount of independent study time to develop their appreciation and enjoyment of this subject and regular assignments will be set. ENTRY CRITERIA: GSCE grade B or above in Science (Core and Additional) or Biology, plus GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English Language.

Chemistry If you have ever found yourself asking the questions ‘why?’ or ‘how?’ in GCSE science then Chemistry is likely to appeal to you. The vast majority of materials we accept as a familiar part of our surroundings owe their existence to chemists, whether we are talking about a computer chip, a new fabric or a new antibiotic. At AS and A2 level you will take your understanding of the behaviour of materials to a higher level, and in the process you will discover that all was not as it seemed at GCSE - chemicals can behave in ways you aren’t aware of! In the process you will experiment with a much wider range of substances than you have encountered so far, and learn how to handle them safely. Coursework elements are integral to this qualification at both AS and A-level. To reinforce what is learnt in class it is expected that students put in a considerable amount of independent study time to develop their appreciation and enjoyment of this subject and regular assignments will be set. ENTRY CRITERIA: GCSE grade B or above in Double Science (or Chemistry) and GCSE grade B in Maths.
