WELCO INTRODUCTION
As a student now coming to the end of my time at One, I can say it has been one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences of my educational life. I was a country girl who came from a tiny village school of 300, and these two years have been exactly the smooth transition from GCSE to university level (or whatever stage of your life is next!) that I needed.
I N TRO | P R OS P ECTU S 2 0 1 9 – 2 0 2 0
The staff here treat you as independent adults from the beginning, which is challenging at first but a role you find yourself gradually and easily growing into. Not only have I found a chosen career path that I would like to follow because of the excellent teaching here, but I am a more confident and well-rounded person thanks to the vibrant social aspect of One. After two years, I am still meeting new people every day, all of them beautifully diverse and unique. Most of my friends and family say I’ve changed during my time at One, and that these changes have been for the better. I would love to meet sixteen-year-old me from two years ago, because I honestly don’t think she’d recognise me now.

Why do you like studying at One? Studying at One allows me to do what I love from my choice of subjects to the clubs that run outside of lessons. You get the amazing support you may need as well as the independence of organising your own study out of lesson time. Independent study periods allow you to complete your work having the choice of where to do this - whether this is at college or at home. Why did you choose One? I chose One because it offered and allowed me to do the subjects I wanted to do. It is the perfect step up from high school allowing independence but still in a very welcoming and supportive environment. The large performance space and music department provides all that I could need making my studies even more enjoyable.

After One, I hope to attend a drama school or music conservatoire to study a degree in either Actor Musicianship or Music. What advice would you give to prospective students? I recommend taking the subjects you enjoy most and the ones that you have a passion for. The most important thing is to enjoy your subjects, so you are then able to happily put in all the focus needed to do well in them. Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One? I love all the opportunities for performing such as in the annual production, the winter and spring concerts, music on the bridge and at Snape Maltings. I really enjoy being at One and being surrounded by so many talented people where we can encourage each other to do the best we can.

As a musical student especially, there are frequent groups at lunchtime such as jazz band, choir and musical theatre band that are open for me to be a part of, as well as many opportunities throughout the year both for performance and academically (with the OnePlus scheme). Another reason is the student-teacher relationship, it is very professional and bridges the gap between secondary school and adulthood well by treating us like young adults. Why did you choose One? I chose One because of the great reputation it has in all my chosen subjects, the atmosphere, the up to date facilities and the opportunities given to the students. What are your next steps after One? I plan to audition for drama school courses in Musical Theatre and hopefully get in then go onto have a career in it! What advice would you give to prospective students? Plan your time well, be organised, and take as many opportunities as you can. Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One? I have definitely been well prepared for my exams and the future by studying at One.

I enjoy studying at One because the way we are taught (with the 2.5 hour lesson blocks) enables more discussion in lessons and there is less pressure to rush things. Before starting at One I thought these lessons would feel never-ending but because there is less of a time pressure, they are more comfortable and relaxed. In this way, I believe One prepares its students well for Higher Education Studies which was important to me when choosing the right sixth form centre.

Chemistry Physics Why do you like studying at One? I really like the relationships students have with staff, it’s really easy to talk to them. I also like the setup of independent study and that the Orange Zone is dedicated to the subjects I am studying. Why did you choose One? I really enjoyed the open event I was invited to, I also received lots of communication from One when I was making my decision about where to study and I didn’t receive this level of communication from the other organisations I applied to. What are your next steps after One? I am hoping to study medicine at University of Southampton. Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One? Try to have your career goal set to help motivate you with your studies and make use of the extra-curricular and work experience opportunities available to you. Make sure you make use of the zones and the curriculum administrators based in these areas as they can really help support you with resources for your studies.

Drama and Theatre Studies Sociology Dance Why do you like studying at One? I really like the fact that it is just a sixth form, so it is all people my own age which is a nice stepping stone up from high school. Also, you’re given a lot of independence to get on with your work and school life which is great. Why did you choose One? One was the only place that I could realistically get to that provided all the courses I wanted to do, especially dance as it isn’t taught at many places. What are your next steps after One? I want to go to university or drama school to study acting or performing arts. What advice would you give to prospective students? Don’t be put off by a long journey because it’s completely worth it! Also, I found the taster day in June to be very important in helping me decide on my study programme. I changed two of my subjects after attending the day and I’m a lot happier on the new courses I chose. Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One? a relaxed, open "From my first visit, One promised needs atmosphere which recognised my social alongside my academic career." Why do you like studying at One? One has, for the duration of my studies, offered a familiar, personal learning experience which allows me to realise my potential and achieve to the best of my academic ability. Teaching, thanks to One’s smaller size, is tailored both to the collective and individual, with classes providing detailed and varied opportunities for academic exploration, and staff always offering up conscientious and helpful advice. Why did you choose One? From my first visit, One promised a relaxed, open atmosphere which recognised my social needs alongside my academic career. Coupled with a diverse number of available courses, I was encouraged to further explore subjects I had enjoyed at GCSE, whilst also afforded the opportunity to pursue something altogether different. What are your next steps after One? If my examinations are successful, I aim to meet the requirements to read History at King’s College Cambridge - from where I have received a conditional offer. I later hope to pursue a career in academia and specialise in medieval European History. What advice would you give to prospective students? There is a significant gap between GCSE and A Level, and one of the most daunting tasks is not to be overwhelmed by this change. Though you will be given plentiful guidance by your teachers, you must remain vocal, and tell staff if you’re struggling to cope. Independence and personal responsibility are important principles of College life.

Whether you are a novice or a grandmaster you are welcome to attend the Strategy Games club at One. We play chess, bridge and other strategy games. As much as we may focus on improving your skills or teaching you the basics, it is mostly an opportunity to seek solace from your day to day college life, an opportunity to meet friends and pit your wits against each other.
One magazine Each year our students are invited to take part in the production of our One Magazine. The magazine is designed by our students and contains a range of articles and stories that are of interest to them. The magazine offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase your design skills, your passion for writing and offers a place to share stories and messages that are important to you.
Debating The One debating society is one of the most popular and certainly the liveliest extracurricular club at One. The society is entirely student run, with an elected student executive (chairperson, vice chair and secretary). Topics are selected on a weekly basis and vary enormously. We cover topics from science, politics, religion, economics, sport, current affairs and whatever takes our fancy! We have entered debating and public speaking competitions in the past, reaching local and regional finals. We use both formal and informal debating styles to engage students, build confidence and develop analytical skills. More than anything we learn how to develop meaningful arguments.

Marketing Ambassador Students who have an interest in marketing or journalism will have the opportunity to work with the marketing team at One on a range of different projects and have the chance to write articles for the website and local paper on topics that are of interest to them. Anyone interested in becoming a Marketing Ambassador should email marketing@suffolkone.ac.uk at the start of the academic year.
LRC Ambassador Student voice The Year 12 and Year 13 Student Reps are democratically chosen by their peers and meet half termly to discuss key topics identified through tutorials or through Student Surveys. A Student Rep gives students direct input into college discussions and ensures the student perspective is considered in all decisions made within college. Student Reps pass on feedback and make suggestions on behalf of all students. Student Reps also foster a sense of collectiveness and community among students, which can make other students feel welcome and valued, allowing them to get the most out of their time as a student. Student Reps will have the opportunity to represent One at events such as the Leadership Conference, open events and during enrolment. Being a Student Rep is a really positive experience and one which is great for including in a personal statement or CV.
The LRC ambassadors are a group of students who volunteer to help the Learning Resource team. Everyone has different strengths, so support can range from talking to prospective students, assisting with national celebrations of reading or helping with routine administrative tasks. There is something for everybody with an emphasis on enjoyment. All ambassadors record their volunteering hours with VInspired and achieve nationally recognised volunteering awards which enhance CVs and personal statements.

Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One because of how supportive every member of staff is, I’ve been given loads of opportunities since starting and I’ve really improved in my knowledge of my subject areas but also in people skills and improving my confidence. Why did you choose One? I chose One because of the grown up feel the college gives, it didn’t feel like a high school. I also really liked all the teachers I met looking round. What are your next steps after One? After One I’m looking to go to film school, then once I’ve finished my degree I want to go into the sound department. Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One? My main advice would be to look around, the only way you get a real feel for One is actually being in the building and talking to both staff and students. Curious about one? Music Technology Music Performance What have you been up to since leaving One? Since completing my A Levels I have progressed on to complete an apprenticeship at BAE Systems and I’ve recently started a full-time role as a Flight Test Engineer. What was your favourite thing about studying at One? My favourite thing about studying at One, without a shadow of a doubt, was the people. The support you get from your PPT and subject tutors helps the overall atmosphere at One be positive, and even when you are having a bad day, they’re there to push you on and support. I’m not sure I’d be where I am today without the support I got over the two years from my PPT.

How did your A Levels help you to prepare for your next step? The biggest thing I took away from my time at One was the reliance on personal time and task management. The way that the day at One is set out, and the relative level of freedom, puts you in control of your achievements and it’s a great way to set you up for either full-time education or fulltime work after college. A piece of advice for current and prospective students: If I were to offer one piece of advice it would be to always strive to achieve in whatever you’re passionate about. I found myself in a situation where I was struggling to figure out what I was going to do after leaving One, but I knew that I was passionate about aviation. This passion landed me in the dream job I have today, so never give up on what makes you tick!

Alumni: students to staff Our aim at One is to put our students at the centre of everything we do. Our students tell us how much they enjoy their time at One, some so much so that they can’t wait to return to take on roles as members of staff! In 2018 we had 10 former students working at One in a variety of roles across the college including an Admissions Administrator, a Personal Progress Tutor, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in History and LRC Administrator.
alex woor Alex Woor studied A Levels at One and then went to study Maths at the University of Essex, gaining first class honours. He has been working at One helping others with their Maths in his role as an instructor. "I loved it here and it's great to be back although I never really went away. Long term, I can see myself staying here for my career. I would recommend One to others. I think it's a great bridge between school and further learning – it's a very empowering environment for a young person. You can be who you want to be. I'm sure I won't be the last former student to come back and teach here."

Cameron Dilley studied four A Levels and then took a Physics degree at the Royal Holloway campus of the University of London. Cameron has since joined One as a technician in the Science department. "I set up a club to help others when I was at One. This inspired me to work in education and become a teacher. I also worked as a private tutor whilst I was at university. I had so many highlights as a student and now I'm looking to gain many more as an employee. It's been great coming back – everyone has been very helpful."

Philosophy Government and Politics Sociology Why do you like studying at One? Studying at One has been a fantastic opportunity which has allowed me to expand my knowledge on the subjects I feel passionate about whilst allowing me to meet new people who have now become my closest friends. Why did you choose One? I chose One because it has a wide range of subjects from which I was able pick, this sets One aside from other sixth form/colleges as many don’t offer this. One also has a good reputation and result history which assured me that I would get a good quality education. What are your next steps after One? I’m planning to go into university to study Social Sciences which will enable me to work in the Criminal Justice sector. What advice would you give to prospective students? Consider your options carefully and if One is the college for you then bring lots of folder dividers. Come in with an open mind and you’ll find yourself enjoying the process!
