To say that One has been just a college for me would be remiss. Though I was apprehensive to join such a large and modern establishment at first, I quickly realised that One is bursting with social interaction, new opportunities and most importantly, support. Thus, I can confidently say that with the help of all of my teachers, PPT, and peers, my journey at One has been an incomparable one. I used to be caught up in the comfortable mindset that my high school sixth form was the only place that would really get me and push me to the best of my abilities, so I didn’t choose One until the very last minute. However, following an impressive open evening, which showcased some of the college’s most convincing qualities (from its wide range of courses to its unique PPT system), I knew it would be the only place I could really thrive. I would recommend researching some university courses that interest you before choosing your programme of study, as often there are particular subjects that are regarded as ’enabling’ or provide useful skills for your course, hence why I chose to study English Literature, French, Politics and Psychology. I felt that they would give me a solid foundation to later study Law after One. These were also, perhaps more significantly, the areas that I enjoyed and was interested in the most. I hope to achieve the grades to meet my offer at Cambridge University and I feel reassured that the support I have been given throughout the past 2 years will enable me to move forward confidently. Post One, I will undoubtedly miss the atmosphere and friends I have made, but equally the unfaltering encouragement of my teachers, who have never failed to see potential in each and every student, even when we don’t particularly see it in ourselves. Overall, I feel that One has fully equipped me to progress to the next stages of my life, and for that I cannot be thankful enough!

Stowupland High School Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One because I love how dedicated everyone is and how it is such a comfortable learning environment. I also like how the teachers treat you like young adults rather than children. Why did you choose One? I chose One because I wanted to be in a calm and challenging learning environment so that I could learn new skills and to improve other skills. Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? My best advice for future students would be to choose to do the thing you love and to find the best place which is suited to you. Don’t let anyone else make the decision for you. What is your biggest achievement at One? My biggest achievement at One would definitely be my progress in my A Level photography course. This is because before coming to One I had never studied photography before and I believe that One has helped me come a lot further as a photographer. What are your plans for the future? My plan for the future is to get a degree in photography at university. From there I would like to start my own wedding photography business. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? One has prepared me by teaching me that if I want to achieve something then I need to work hard in order to achieve my goals and to get me to the next step of my life. Is there any advice you would offer students currently with us to help them prepare for their next steps? I would say work hard because you won’t get to where you want to be in life if you don’t work hard.

Why did you apply to One? At the beginning of Year 11, when I first visited One, I was blown away by the sheer difference in size, number of people, attitudes, teachers and building. It truly felt like the next big step, just as Year 6 to 7 had. As Year 11 progressed, I became fed up and frankly bored of my current setting, and it reached a point where even after looking at several other sixth forms, One was the only place which didn’t feel like an extension of high school. Plus, it had a fantastic atmosphere and left me wanting to start college the day high school ended. Why do you like studying at One? Studying at One gives you the freedom to learn how you work best, the independence is priceless and something I would never trade my 30 minute bus ride for a 5 minute walk for. The teachers engage with you wholeheartedly, wanting you to succeed in every way possible, supporting those who need additional help and challenging those further who are ahead. There doesn’t exist the teacher-student hierarchy which is heavily prevalent in high schools and even high school sixth forms, and as such you’re able to laugh along and enjoy learning the material your teachers love teaching you. It’s all too obvious that the teachers have a true passion for what they do, and they do it excellently. What are your next steps after One?

After finishing A Levels at One, I am planning on attending university to study Computer Science, hopefully within the Russel Group. I may also get in contact with computer-related companies and discuss potential work experience or maybe even jobs.

Is there any advice you would offer to students currently with us to help them prepare for their next steps? If anything, it’s that if you don’t already know where you want to go in the future, do what you enjoy. Even if you later find you end up in a different area of work or education, at least the time spent was on something you loved rather than something terribly boring. If you do know, then make sure you hone your outside reading and research into this area and try to get as much experience with the field beforehand. This shows education providers and employers your ability to think ahead and your passion for the subject. What are your plans for the future? Currently, after attending university, I do not know where I want to progress to. A few options are to continue at university and conduct research for them, study further on, or enter the workforce in a computer science related area. What will you miss most about studying at One? The people, no doubt about it. With two thousand other students, everyone is bound to find someone or a group who they just ’click’ with. It’s disheartening to know A Levels, the most enjoyable years of my life so far, only extend two years. I know so many of my friends feel the same way, as the relationships made here are ones that will last a lifetime. Aside from friends, the teachers too! They all have such vibrant personalities which really shine through, and make the journey through Year 12 to 13 one that will not be forgotten. Is there anything else you would like to say? One last thing to add, make the most of the first two weeks at sixth form, no matter where you go. During this time it’s a scramble for getting your bearings and the best time to meet new people and make solid friendships. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll meet new people all throughout, but having someone or some people to fall back to during break or lunch is a must have. Good luck!

St Alban’s High School Why do you like studying at One? One allows students to pursue their dreams, offering many opportunities which allow students to express their passions, make a difference and share it with like-minded people. One attracts students who are passionate about their subject but also gives room for those wanting to explore their options and want to study with a mature attitude towards learning. It is an environment which empowers anybody that has creative ideas and leadership initiatives. The modern architecture of the college makes it unique and enhances the experience of studying. There are many opportunities available for students in different disciplines, for example those who are passionate about business are exposed to the opportunity of joining the Institute of Directors of which I had the privilege of being selected for. For those wanting to stretch their leadership capability and be exposed to women in different industries, learning from their experiences, Modern Muse was the ideal platform for girls who want to do so. In addition, the teachers and PPTs at One really want you to excel and are willing to go above and beyond to enrich your sixth form experience and prepare you for your future.

Why did you choose One? I chose One due to the flexibility of courses, broad variety of subjects and freedom to engage in independent learning. It is a healthy working environment which has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, meet new people and ultimately prepare me for university. Having gone to St Alban's I wanted to have a new experience which would prepare me for the university setting even more. Why did you make the decision to study your current subjects? I chose my current subjects based on the career I am wanting to pursue in the future in the financial sector. This guided me in making the subject choices specific to the career I was seeking. Besides that, I enjoyed Mathematics and French at GCSE level and wanted to build on the knowledge that I had learnt from my Business Studies, hence my reason for choosing Economics and Accounting. Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? I would advise students who are coming to One to be open minded and make the most of every opportunity. There is a lot of support available to give students a well-rounded, holistic experience. However, don’t be afraid to ask if you need help, whether this is with studies, mental health or other difficulties you may be facing. One seeks to enrich the student’s experience, so utilise all the opportunities and resources that are at your disposal. Students at One have access to various resources that are not available at other sixth forms and colleges so make the most of it. What is the one thing you will miss the most about college? I will miss the one to one support I have had with teachers and PPTs, as they have supported me in so many ways and have encouraged me to reach my fullest potential. The staff at One really care about the students and want them to excel, and this is evident. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? The working environment has prepared me for university as there are many students and the level of independence at One is much higher than that in other sixth form settings. I have been able to meet so many people from different places and backgrounds and this has increased my confidence in meeting people. Also, having been a Student Member of the IOD, I have gained skills in networking in professional skills, have organised events and broadened my network which has guided me in some choices that I have had to make towards the career I would like to go into. Is there anything else you would like to say? One is a college growing in diversity and is very encouraging of people of ethnic backgrounds to express their opinions and cultural identity. As a person from an ethnic minority background, I have felt equal opportunity is given to succeed. One is intentional about making all students feel valued and appreciated and continues to put in place initiatives to enhance the student experience, for example through the various societies led by students. Why did you choose One?

Problem Solving

Studying at One is so great because all my subject teachers are extremely helpful and provide me with great guidance; about my course and my future. The atmosphere here feels like a university would, and this makes me feel ready to enter the world after Year 13.

I knew I wanted to study Science and Maths, but I wasn’t very fond of exams so was looking for a course with a focus of coursework. One was the only place that I found that combined Science with coursework, and so I knew One was the place I wanted to study.

Is there any advice you would give to students looking to study at One? There is definitely a subject combination here for you. The amount of courses is amazing, so if you want to combine three subjects that you really enjoy, then One is certainly able to do that. What is the one thing you will miss about college? The people. Everyone here is so friendly. The staff make you feel so welcome and the students give it an atmosphere that feels so far from a college. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college?

From the first few weeks, my teachers and PPT wanted to know what plans I had for a career or university. They all took time to get to know what I wanted to do so they could help me in every way they can, and they’ve definitely made me feel more secure in the choices I’ve made for after college. Why did you make the decision to study Applied Science?

The three sciences were subjects that I really enjoyed at high school, and I got some of my best GCSE results in. The fact that the final grade is mostly based off coursework really appealed to me as I don’t like exams very much. Applied Science also covers areas of science that really interest me like Medical Physics so it seemed the perfect course.

SO IF YOU “THE AMOUNT OF COURSES IS AMAZING, YOU REALLY WANT TO COMBINE THREE SUBJECTS THAT THAT.” ENJOY, THEN ONE IS CERTAINLY ABLE TO DO

IRONMENT AND “THE LONG LESSONS MEAN A FOCUSED ENV T MEANING I ALWAYS THE TEACHERS PROPERLY INVEST SUPPOR E.” UNDERSTAND THE CONTENT BEFORE I LEAV Why did you apply to One? I applied to One because of the very good science department, because of its amazing reputation as the only outstanding sixth form in Suffolk, and because of its travel links; the bus routes meant it was one of the fastest places I could get to as I live in quite a remote place. Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One because of the freedom. The long lunches and multiple independent study periods mean that my learning is much more in my control. I like how the teachers trust us to get our work done of our own accord. The long lessons mean a focused environment and the teachers properly invest support meaning I always understand the content before I leave. What are your next steps after One? After One I am looking to study a course to do with the sea and the science behind it at university - potentially Cardiff or Southampton. Is there any advice you would offer students currently with us to help them prepare for their next steps? The advice I would give to other students is use your independent study periods, don’t just go home. Stay at college and get your work done in the purple zone where the facilities you may need you can access. When you have finished, invest your time in your friends, because they will help and inspire you to continue to your next steps, specifically if they do similar subjects.

What are your plans for the future?

At university, I plan to do UOTC (University Officer Training Corps) and then hopefully begin applying to the army. If I decide to take other routes, it would be to study abroad or do conservation work in coral reefs, and other places where scientists are needed. What will you miss most about studying at One?

I will miss the activities from One, the music bands and the musical were really fun to get involved in, even though I don’t take a performance subject. But obviously I will miss my friends the most. Is there anything else you would like to say?

The only other thing I would say is that One is an incredibly supportive and pleasant atmosphere, enjoy your time here, use the facilities to ensure that you like doing your work, rather than finding it stressful.

Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One because the level of support is great, from the resources available to us for our academics, to the Personal Progress Tutors you can go to about anything. I loved having additional support because it took a bit of the pressure away. Why did you choose One? I couldn’t see myself going to any other Sixth Form/College; One is simply the best for achieving the best results possible which is very important for someone like me who wants to go to university. Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? My advice would be to make use of your teachers/PPT as much as possible. They are there to help you with absolutely anything from your academics to your personal life. They are truly so supportive. What is the one thing you will miss the most about college? Being together with all my friends. I made so many new friends, friends for life; they really helped me enjoy my time at One. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? It has definitely helped me develop social skills as well as other academic skills such as essay writing. Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One mainly because of the way I am treated as a young adult, and the incredible rapport I have with all my teachers. Being treated like a young adult and being expected to act like one has equipped me for life after One as it has taught me how I would be treated in jobs or higher education. Why did you choose One? I chose to study at One because I felt a change of scenery was needed. My old high school was quite small, and in order to maximise my A Level experience I wanted to be in a place that was fresh, bigger and would give me more opportunities to stretch myself both academically and socially. Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? The one piece of advice I’d give to future students is to think big. Don’t be confined by potential fears and worries about the new and perhaps bigger environment, and any initial nerves you may feel look beyond the building and into the future. Think about how you could really maximise your time here, and how studying at One can and will give you so many skills needed for your future prospects. What is your biggest achievement at One? My biggest achievement whilst studying at One, apart from my academic studies of which I am very proud, was having the privilege of being a Youth Ambassador for a group called

Modern Muse. The group specialises in empowering women and encouraging them to aim high in their careers, by helping young girls gain confidence that they can take with them to any job or place of education. I was able to attend a conference at Google HQ in London among other Youth Ambassadors in order to connect with other Muses, and learn about how I can really make the most out of my future as a young woman. What are your plans for the future? My plan for the future is to continue with the subject I have excelled in and enjoyed most - English Literature. I have accepted a place at UEA to study English and American Literature, and afterwards I may think about doing a year of teacher training as I would love to become an English Literature teacher in a place like One, one day, sharing my passion for literature with the next generation of students. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? The main thing One has given me that will help me in my future is confidence. I have come out of my shell greatly, and have been able to identify my academic and personal strengths, then learning how to harness them in a way that will benefit my future most. I have also broadened my social skills, coming out with much better communication and people skills than I arrived with - with a college that has so many students, it’s hard not to connect with people! Is there any advice you would offer students currently with us to help them prepare for their next steps? A piece of advice I’d give to current students about their future is to take every opportunity that you can, and never stop thinking about the next steps. Open days, Higher Education days, residential trips to places of work or universities, or even speaking to past students about what they’ve gone on to do is a brilliant way to learn where you could see yourself in the future. Don’t let something pass you by - two years goes by very quickly! Is there anything else you would like to say? My final comment is that studying at One has moulded me into the confident, assured and positive young person that I am today. You will most likely leave with a different outlook on life and who you are as a person than when you arrived - in the best way!

EPQ The Extended Project Qualification gives students an opportunity to attain an extra AS level qualification. Through independent investigation, students can extend their knowledge in a particular field, which is excellent preparation for Higher Education. Studying for the EPQ will provide exceptional material for UCAS applications and many High Tariff Universities will make reduced UCAS points/grade offers for students attaining an A*/A grade for their EPQ.

STRATEGY CLUB Whether you are a novice or a grandmaster you are welcome to attend the Strategy Games club at One. We play chess, bridge and other strategy games. As much as we may focus on improving your skills or teaching you the basics, it is mostly an opportunity to seek solace from your day-to-day college life, an opportunity to meet friends and pit your wits against each other.

DEBATING The One debating society is one of the most popular and certainly the liveliest extra-curricular club at One. The society is entirely student run, with an elected student executive (chairperson, vice chair and secretary). Topics are selected on a weekly basis and vary enormously. We cover topics from science, politics, religion, economics, sport, current affairs and whatever takes our fancy! We have entered debating and public speaking competitions in the past, reaching local and regional finals. We use both formal and informal debating styles to engage students, build confidence and develop analytical skills. More than anything we learn how to develop meaningful arguments.

STUDENT VOICE The Year 12 and Year 13 Student Reps are democratically chosen by their peers and meet half termly, to discuss key topics identified through tutorials or through Student Surveys. A Student Rep gives students direct input into college discussions and ensures that the student perspective is considered in most decisions. Student Reps pass on feedback and make suggestions on behalf of all students. Student Reps also foster a sense of collectiveness and community among students, which can make other students feel welcome and valued - allowing them to get the most out of their time as a student. Student Reps will have the opportunity to represent One at events such as the Leadership Conference, open events and during enrolment. Being a Student Rep is a really positive experience and one which is great for including in a personal statement or CV.

St Alban’s High School

Why did you apply to One? I originally didn’t want to apply to One, as it was so different to my high school. It was scary, all of the change. I spent most of Year 11 changing my mind about where I was going to go, as I was comfortable in the school I was at and both my siblings went there. I didn’t want to step out of the norm, but my high school didn’t have the subjects I wanted to take and once I visited One I immediately wanted to go there. One has a lot of great equipment and has such an amazing learning environment. It’s so light inside and there are so many bright colours which have definitely motivated me. I also wanted to go One as it was a step closer to university, as the building is so big and there are so many students but much fewer than a university as my high school was quite small I felt it was better to have a smaller leap instead of one massive one. Why do you like studying at One? My teachers are so great, they have really helped me progress in my work. For example in art my work has massively improved and it’s all because of my supportive and great teachers. They’ve also inspired me to try different things such as different film genres and art styles that I would have never looked at. When I started at One I thought some of my lessons would eventually get boring because of how long they are but all of them are really fun and I enjoy going to lessons. One has such a chilled environment it feels like a choice and not forced education. What are your next steps after One? I would like to go to university and take a fine art degree. What are your plans for the future? I would like to get a degree in fine art then a masters degree in art, then become an art teacher or go into the film industry and become a prop maker. What will you miss about one? When I leave One I will miss all the friends and memories I have made. One has definitely built my confidence. Is there anything else you would like to say? One is such an amazing place and I would recommend it to anyone.

Why do you like studying at One? The environment at One brought a more independent style of learning. It allowed me to grow as a person, it’s a very positive environment. Why did you choose One? Mainly because it appealed to me as somewhere to give me independence. There is a wide variation of courses, allowing options and opportunities. Why did you make the decision to study these subjects? I choose to study these subjects because they were the subjects I was genuinely more interested in. I had already studied history in High School so I knew I would enjoy the subject. I was interested in Politics and Media and therefore challenged myself. A Levels will always be challenging but anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? Push yourself and get involved in as many events and activities as possible. When starting at One it might feel frightening to be in a new environment, but the more engaged in your studies and subject you are, the faster time will go. What is the one thing you will miss the most about college? Probably the trips and the lovely staff. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? It’s certainly allowed me to learn to work independently and therefore build my confidence. College will allow you to grow as a person and find yourself, find who you really are.

“LEARNING IS LESS RESTRICTED AND GIVES YOU A LOT MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.” Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One as there is a sense of belonging at a college like this, learning is less restricted and gives you a lot more opportunities for growth and development. Also everyone is very friendly and I think if you struggle to make friends then there’s always a friendship group that can make you feel welcome. That also goes for teachers and PPTs as they are always there to support you but they also act as friends as well so there’s always banter and jokiness which you don’t necessarily find in high school. There are a wide range of courses, sports clubs and other activities which you can occupy yourself with that give you a chance to develop and take you down certain avenues. Why did you choose One? I chose One because I am a county badminton player and this is where the majority of my training is conducted so I’m very familiar with the facilities. I had also heard that it was very outstanding and the majority of people who studied here came out the other end with great grades so that was a big deciding factor.

Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? Anyone who is interested in studying here would definitely benefit from choosing to come here; they would receive great teaching from a huge variety of courses but also receive great feedback about work. The extra support from PPTs will help especially with possible difficulties at home, any learning problems within college and they can just be amazing for having general chats with. You can make friends quickly here and learn many skills you would think would be hard to adapt to. It is amazing and I would 100% recommend for others to study at this college. What is the one thing you will miss the most about college? The one thing I will miss about college is the atmosphere but also the amazing people who work and study here as they’re all welcoming and kind and that will be tough to let go. Also the 9:30am Paddy and Scott’s coffee from the café.

INITIATIVE How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? Life at One has taught me to be bold and step out of my comfort zone, especially when trying new things and learning about subjects which interest you. It is also taught me about independence which I have developed when completing assignments, etc. and the sense of freedom that you attain while studying at One. Why did you make the decision to study Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma? I made the decision to choose the Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma course as I have always been very passionate about my sport, especially from a young age when I used to play rugby, football, tennis and athletics and have carried that on with my badminton career. I was also fascinated about the world of jobs in the sporting industry apart from aspiring to be a professional athlete such as physiotherapy, sports massage, coach, etc. and the course does help to influence your decisions positively when thinking about working in the sport industry.

Is there any advice you would like to give students looking to study at One? For any students looking to study at One, do, but make sure you are prepared to do things by yourself without a teacher always there, there’s a lot of independent work which means you won’t always be guided the whole way through, so make sure you’re okay with that. What is your biggest achievement at One? My biggest achievement at One was probably joining the Mock Trial Society and making it 2nd in the local Mock Trial competition at Ipswich Crown Court. What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are attending Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and studying Crime and Investigative Studies, to lead to a career in the Police Force. How has your time at One prepared you for life after college? One has prepared me for the future after college by offering constant support in the form of PPTs and their constant help, walking everyone through all their options and reassuring them to go for whatever they want. The teachers have helped me to not only gain new knowledge and experiences but also reinforced exam techniques and writing practices. Is there any advice you would offer students currently with us to help them prepare for their next steps? To any students struggling with their future plans right now, talk to your PPTs, talk to your friends, see what they say your positives are, or where you’d best be suited, don’t let anyone dictate where you’re going to go, but gain as much advice as you need. Is there anything else you would like to say? I would just like to say a huge thank you to all staff at One for doing an amazing job and for helping all these students through college and into further education!
